u.s. rod rosenstein is scheduled to be interviewed thursday by four lawmakers behind closed doors. thanks for being with us. good night from new york. trish report caravan of -- trish: the caravan of migrants now 7,000 people heading straight towards our border. mexico is doing nothing. will we be forced to send u.s. troops to the border? president trump could make appreciate comments at his rally in houston. in just moments i'll ask white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders, what are our plans of dealing with the caravan.
8:01 pm
president obama criticizing the trump administration comparing it to a two-bit dictatorship. >> that's not how america works. that's' how some dictatorships work. that's not american. trish: was that america when president obama's irs went after tea party members. or when the attorney general loretta lynch pressures the fbi to call the hillary clinton investigation a matter. and why president obama will not succeed with this revisionist history. a new poll reveals president trump's approval rating is higher than president obama's was ahead of the mid-terms. does this prove incivility from the left like this doesn't work?
8:02 pm
>> why don't you get out of here. they were going after mitch mcconnell in that one. "trish regan primetime" starts right now. our top story. president trump calling the migrant caravan a national emergency. the caravan is gaining strength as it moves north. when i first reported on this friday there were estimates of 5,000 people. now the caravan is believed to be more than 7,000 strong and it's still growing. we do not know exactly who is in this caravan. but judging from a lot of the pictures. you look at these pictures and i think we can pretty much safely assume the caravan that is supposed to be filled with families, mothers and children.
8:03 pm
when you look at these pictures it's predominantly young men. it's clear at this moment mexico is doing nothing to stop them. mexico allowed them to stampede into their country and mexico has allowed their group to grow and grow by the thousands. we know where president trump stands on this. but what about the democrats? >> trish, congratulations on starting week two. i was tucker carlson's first guest when he took his 8:00 hour and it worked well for him. trish: you are a good omen. as someone on the left as a democratic strategist. you see those pictures and you say what? >> i say that if donald trump thought running on the tax cuts which are quite unpopular would
8:04 pm
have worked, he would be talking about that. if donald trump would talk about repealing obamacare again, now that's quite popular, he doesn't want to talk about that. he's under investigation. these are scare tactics we have seen before. trish: it's 7,000 people. we'll save that for another time. but i disfew what you said about tax cuts. americans love it. they are back to work for the first time in years, the lowest unemployment level since 1969. but back to the caravan. you think this is a concocted political moment that is being orchestrated by donald trump? >> two months ago it was noy tibbetts who got murdered by an immigrant in iowa. and i remember newt gingrich coming on the air on fox and said we should keep talking about that. now it's the caravan.
8:05 pm
trish report caravan is very real. mollie tibbetts. her life was very real and her family wants to us keep talking about that. 7,000-plus people. look at that picture, richard. how is that not real to you. >> the problem is if donald trump was such an effective president, the single thing he campaigned the most of on was building a wall with mexico and have the mexicans pay for it. he just cut a deal with mexico about nafta and they didn't agree to pay for anything. trish: mexico should be doing a lot more to stop this. the president did say he was willing to cut the 2.billion in funding. we give quite a bit of money to mexico as well. we can cut it all. if they can't get their act together, we are willing to do that. i want to get back to this idea you don't think this is real. what will happen when these
8:06 pm
7,000-plus people show up at our doorstep. what should we do? >> the history of the caravans. there is safety in numbers for them as opposed to going in ones and twos. and this notion donald trump says if you look there is ms-13 and middle eastern thugs. i'm waiting for him to say there is jimmy hoffa and amelia earhart. these people are walking thousands of miles. ask our viewers what it would take for them to walk to california. trish: i want a sensible explanation what you want to do when 7,000 pluts people show up on your bored and you don't know what kind of criminal record they might have. what do you think? we should invite them all in? >> no. when the democrats were in charge of the u.s. senate in 2013 thanks in large part to
8:07 pm
john mccain and modeled after george w. bush, a comprehensive immigration reform bill was passed. but it underscores donald trump's weakness as president. trish: the president of the united states is talking about this issue. president trump: talking to a lot of your people, and they are going to form a wall, a different kind of a wall until we get other one built. we need a wall built fast. we have to protect our borders. we don't have borders. we don't have a country. we have to protect our borderers. and ted, you probably saw, did a beautiful job in staring down an angry left-wing mob in our recent supreme court battle victory, whatever you want to call it.

8:09 pm
and should do from a military perspective. good to have you. at 8:00. what realistically can the u.s. military do? >> what guide the military here, he's not talking about using the national guard to supplement the border patrol. he's talking about using federal forces. to employ federal forces in the united states, there is two reasons to do it. one is what we are talking about here, an invasion, and does this qualify as an invasion? that will probably be legally challenged. but he has the authority to do it. the second thing is insurrection. that's when we use federal forces in riots in major cities. this would take -- we have thousands of miles of border. this would take tens of thousands of troops to do what he's suggesting.
8:10 pm
trish: the people are coming toward us. can't we tell exactly where they are heading via drones and other technology? >> they will make a decision at some point. a lot of them want to go to california. that's a longer trek for them. certainly they will focus those troops. but it will take a lot to do it. the second thing is -- trish: we should stop them. 7,000 people coming our way, we can top them. >> there is no doubt about that. it's not a mission the u.s. military would be looking to do, to be frank about it. trish: if you say it's an invasion. >> the military does not like controlling people like this. they like to control -- what they are there for is to deal with people who have weapons. threatening other people or people are going to threaten them. they are not in the people control business. i spent my whole life doing this.
8:11 pm
this is one of the missions they don't like to do. but they will do it because they have done it with their own citizens in the past when they are rioting in the streets, et cetera. but it shouldn't come to this. we need to get mexico to stand up here. you saw how feckless their efforts were. trish: totally. >> they had a bridge to deal with, a control point right there. some people started to go around the bridge. that could have been easily stopped as they were using the water to navigate across. these people were going to get violent. you could see that coming. they didn't want to get unto an image situation where they were putting down violence. trish: they should have been better prepared for that. we are looking at those pictures of the people stampeding the border fence. the authorities not able to do a
8:12 pm
darn thing. they knew they were coming. they saw the video of them heading that way. the mexican president promising our president, we are going to try. that's reality? >> that's the most of cooperation we ever received was that statement. but when it came down to execution -- there are ways to control population without bringing harm to the population. they are called population control techniques. there are ways to do that. they didn't have the stomach to do it. i think the president is absolutely right about shutting down the aid to these countries. let another caravan like this come in. how many more will be stacked up behind it. trish: you are here legally or illegally. and we are not going to allow people to come in like that. it's good to see you. thank you very much. general keane. white house press secretary
