will arrive in tijuana on new year's eve. william lajeunesse traveling with that caravan. they are in arriaga, mexico. give us the latest. reporter: the caravan arrived here. there are still 6,000. this is where a lot of them will sleep tonight. the town scare under canopies and cardboard. the state of chiapas bringing in food and water. you said they made 62 miles today. sunday was 0 miles. they are hitchhiking. the mexicans are giving them ride. mexican federal police at a checkpoint on the immigrant highway stopping local buses and trucks, allowing and seeing if there is any room for the immigrants to board from the

caravan. mexico told the u.s. it was stopping vehicles carrying the immigrants. not only are they not stopping them, they are helping put immigrants on the trucks. as i said, there are 6,000. according to unicef there are 2,600 children on the caravan. some of the men have left for work in mexico. staying here. some families are returning to honduras. but many continue going to the u.s. on their own regardless of warnings from president trump. >> we heard what he has been saying. but we'll ask him for an opportunity to work. >> so the timetable is change. clearly, they are going a lot faster than anyone thought before. this is a rail car.

the people are sleeping literally right next to the rail yard. this is known as the beast. they have taken this train for generations coming up from central america. i poke to several people who -- i spoke to several people who said they will get on the train. the cartels are there, the gangs are there. kidnapping, robbery, theft, falling off the train. but the bottom line is they will be in the united states faster than anyone previously thought. lou: faster but certainly not fast. by my calculation it would still take about 0 more days to get near the border. it looks like it will be disrupting some of the plans the left-wing organizers of these caravans who wanted their arrival before election day. >> that's possible. but i wanted to bring up one

quick thing. the pressure campaign on mexico may be working a little bit. president nieto said he'll offer these caravan members a job, school for their kid and medical care if they would stay and file here. up until now they haven't been willing to trust the mexican government. as for the organizers. they say it am marathon, not a sprint. they want to get there en masse in tijuana and have their attorneys help these people. as you and i both know, i talked to most of of these people. they don't bring up asylum. they haven't talked about credible fear and persecution. they talked about poverty and jobs. lou: the good news is the president of mexico is offering them jobs and support. that is a first. and perhaps augurs well for the direction of what is now a

migrants who apparently haven't been told the truth about what a wait there is at the southern border for they get that far and how dangerous this trek is. >> you are right. it's incredibly dangerous. the majority of migrants. the families way at the front of the pack. i was in guatemala and the honduran border this week when the second wave of migrants came across the border. the majority were actually men. i would say there was about 1,200 men, and a few hundred women and children they put in the front of the line. this was highly organized. they had the women and children at the front of the line for the photographers and whatever local news agencies were there. i didn't see a lot of international agencies though i did see cnn spanish there. but they were there to tell the

story of the women and children. when i walked to the back, it was about 1,300 men. it looked like columns of men. they had a honduran flag and they were coming through and saying we are heading straight for america. president trump is going to see us, they are going to let us in. we are heading there to get jobs and we won't stop until we get there. the guatemalan government tried to turn people back and they turned back 3,500 to 4,000 people warning them it was going to be so dangerous. but now it's grown to 14,000 people because people in mexico are joining in the caravan and the drug cartels are taking advantage of it as well. lou: drug cartels, traffickers, smugglers. who are these people and why aren't the governments whether
