now. [♪] the president speaking on the border a short time ago. deirdre bolton is in washington, d.c. with the details. dierdre: keeping the spotlight on his hard line immigration policies. he called the caravan from central america an invasion that poses a major security threat. president trump: anybody throwing stones, rocks, like they did to mexico where they badly hurt police and soldiers of mexico, we'll consider that a firearm. because this not much difference. dierdre: specifically the president called into question the motivation of the migrants. president trump: the government of mexico generously offered asylum, jobs, mid cas -- medican

and medical care but they have refused these offers which demonstrate they are not legitimate asylum seekers. dierdre: the president says there is a legal wrinkle. the immigration and nationality act of 1955 says any immigrant in the u.s. may apply for asylum regard letters of whether or not they entered through a legal port of entry, which is why the president made that reference to an executive order. he said asylum seekers caught crossing the border illegally will be held in tents instead of the previous administration releasing pending an asylum hearing. the president says it's a mag that for illegal immigration and

6:06 pm
the regulations say a rifle would be excessive use of force. >> this one of the funniest after he kiewf sayings you hear that donald trump is talking about the border right before the election. it's and i important political issue to a lot of voters and of course he's going to talk about it in the run-up to the election. we have had some terrible things that happened the last few weeks. but changing the topic of conversation from those things is something politicians don't like to do. but it's an election. that's why we have an election. liz: is it race baiting or fear mongering when we secure the northern border? hillary clinton was not accused much fear mongering when she had these tough words four years ago about children of illegal immigrants. >> we've have to send you a
6:07 pm
clear message, just because your child gets across the bored. it doesn't mean the child gets to stay. we don't want to send a message that con driery to our laws or will encourage more children to make that dangerous journey. >> this should not shall a politicized issue. politicians have ignored this issue for so long. for 15-20 years, they refused to do anything about it. finally this guy, this impolitic guy who is not part of the establishment walks in because he listens carefully to voters, he won the white house on it. liz: we checked the facts. the hispanic caucus said quote merit-based immigration is a poison pill.
6:08 pm
so it looks like democrats support tougher bored terse until they run for president. >> democrats like to point out, this is not an issue only white, conservative voters care about. and it's not just white, conservative voters. they probably been first the most of from a lot of illegal immigration. because they have get cheap labor it's legal hispanics and legal immigrants in this country who probably bear the brunt of the cost. liz: paul krugman said that in 2005. ted kennedy was tough on the bored. so was chuck schumer, elizabeth warren, bill clinton, harry reid. trish regan spoke to the president about the caravan. >> this caravan was organized by

leftist groups in honduras, financed in part by venezuela. this all according to the president of the honduras. but they were sent north for the sole and exclusive reason of challenging the laws of the united states of america by coming into our country illegally. the president made it clear we are not going to let them get away with it. >> he said venezuela rather than some of the big money donors. but the bottom line is we spent two years talking about russia meddling in our elections. why aren't we concerned about a caravan meddling in our election? lord knows, the people that are upset about this, they are not look for no immigration, they

6:13 pm
needed. liz: we don't do talking points here. stay on the point of welfare. we secure our northern border. is that racist and race baiting? >> we secure our northern border less than we secure our southern border. roads in vermont you can walk across the border without any crossing. the people coming in this caravan will present themselves for asylum. we don't need 12,000 troops at the border to do that. i agree we have to work and making sure people who come here come here legally and we have a process to deal with it. we are wasting money and a lot of things. this is not the worst of it. i don't know where she got the $70 billion number from. >> it's a fact. liz: we are dealing with a poor border policy. and we are spending a lot of
6:14 pm
money on the back end when we could have the policies to fix it on the front end, right? >> absolutely. in the long term if we secure our borders we won't have to spend as much money. >> it's an alternative fact. >> it's what the article we are discussing tonight discussed. and to liz's point, two rights don't make a wrong here. just because we are spending money on one thing doesn't mean we should spend more on another. we need to spend less money. republicans and democrats have wasted a lot of our money. liz: i understand you want to question the facts. i don't think it's fair to demean and call it alternative facts. studies by non-partisans groups saying illegal immigrant tons

so that's as of right now. democrats need to win 15 of the 34 house tossup seats to take back control. let's bring in ned ryun it's a nail biter. your take. >> all this chatter of a blue tsunami. if we take the house back it might only be by a couple seats. we were talking about dems taking back senate. i think what's going to happen is we'll hold all the close seats in nevada and tennessee. so it's been aphrasing to see a dramatic shift. this is starting to feel like 2016. we were assured there was no way

he hit 3.2% that second year. the numbers are way off. and the democrats are trying to spin that narrative. and they are getting help from the media. liz: it's making the democrat media backers crazy. what you are saying is that you can see that the media of course as we have seen in certain corners of the media, they are in the bag with democrats. in the beginning of the trump recovery they were dismission it. once they started to see it take hold, you are saying now they are saying barack obama deserved the credit. is that what you are seeing? >> they are embracing it. the democrats and the corporate media are joined at the hip. there noise question by the. but the historical friend is as you very well know, the party out of power is the party that wins the mid-term elections.
