trish: president trump's administration rolling out tough measures that would deny asylum to any migrant that tries to enter our country illegally. they are en route to our borders. joining us, attorney misty merrick. walk us through the implications. but we have learned tonight from mexico that thousands of migrants are refusing mexico's offer of asylum. and not only that, they are demanding buses, buses to get them to the u.s. i would just say if you are really a victim in need asylum, wouldn't you take the first offer you get? >> absolutely, trish. that's something that has been addressed by president trump back in may. they were talking to the mexican

government about a policy of the first safe country. when you get into mexico. if you left the country where you are avoiding prosecution, that's where you should seek asylum. however, there is no legal mechanism to force that. that's part of the issue. there is no agreement between the country that can legally force somebody seek asylum to seek tonight mexico. the bus issue. we saw a few days ago the same issue demands to the mexican government. trish: how do they demands anything? you are coming in from guatemala or el salvador and you are demanding? saying you are entitled to transportation to the u.s.? i don't get it. >> it's a sticky situation because these people are putting themselves into a dangerous situation, demanding transportation. being denies transportation because there is no legal mechanism or requirement to give

that transportation. and being given the' option of seek asylum in mexico. trish: and turning that down. shouldn't that be a disqualifier? when i spoke to vice president pence he said you are supposed to take the asylum in the first country you reach. >> the issue is there is no legal mechanism, no law that says you have to do that. what the president is change. he's saying anybody that doesn't come in through a legal port of entry and seek asylum through they will channels will not be eligible for asylum. so this is shattering. for years and years congress has not been able to wrap their minds around immigration reform.

open things up? have open borders? it nation no sense. first off what are we going to do, take in all of latin and south america and say we'll be responsible for every one? there is only so much we can handle. i think any sensible person would look at this and say it doesn't make any sense. who is that beast? chelsea handler? steve: yes. i was about to say, it's people who live comfortable lives on the coast in brooklyn and l.a. and so on who aren't affected by any of this stuff. they see for them interesting restaurants and people in their neighborhood and diversity. but they don't feel the consequences because as it's been documented over and over again, the real impact of mass low-skill immigration is on parts of the country where

people like chelsea handler and people who live in brooklyn and live in the knowledge economy we hear so much about. they don't see the consequences, they don't feel tonight their economy and the schools and their areas and the services they use. that's how they can afford to make these statements about how generous they have to be. it doesn't cost them or hurt them in their lives. trish: the term limousine liberal. you don't have to deal with these people in your community, schools or crime issues associated with a big influx of people. it's too bad. but again it's politically speaking. i don't see how it pays off. i think it backfires. you want to tall join hands and say kumbaya, i would argue we haven't been as welcoming as some on the left would like you to think we have been.

but nonetheless, i don't know where it gets you. if they are trying to campaign for the voters that are here illegally, well, they still last i checked can't vote. steve: that's right. as you saw in the election, stacey abrams in georgia, it may have been a slip of the tongue. she specifically included non-citizens in her list of those who would participate in the blue wave. trish: can i go off on a tangent and ask what you think about the term undocumented? to be undocumented means you don't have the documents. undocumented is different than illegal. i would argue i misplaced my passport and license recently and i was totally undocumented. but being here illegally is something entirely different.

but now it's -- steve: i think it's a good point. i completely agree it's an important distinction. i am here following the process, right? in a sense i'm undocumented because i'm here on a green card. trish: you are documented because you have the documentation. steve: right. but in terms of citizenship, i'm not yet a citizen. i'm waiting in line for that. i hope to start pratt says next year if all goes well. but this goes to the heart after country and rule of law. all those things we hear about from the left. we hear about how donald trump is undermining the rule of law. what about those people who are here illegally and think that's fine. it completely under mines the rule of law. the use of that word is trying to normalize. that's another word we hear all
