putting our country in deep danger and we'll stop it. we have news of arrests of migrants in the caravan. money, politics. we have the debate behind tomorrow's headlines. i'm elizabeth macdonald. "the evening edit" starts right now. let's get to facebook. investors have been abandoning facebook shares in droves. a rare interview on cnn with mark zuckerberg it's being criticized. facebook is gearing up for battle with president trump. they just highered a lawyer who

led the justice department office in silicon valley. facebook stalks you on the internet even after you unplug it. >> it has been a tough year for mark zuckerberg for numerous reasons. but wins investor concern he should have the ceo and chairman roles questioning that. one chairman asked him point blank if he should step down. >> i always talk about how we need to barn other companies and non-profits. i don't think fundamentally we'll be able to address all these those issues by themselves. i do run the company, i am responsible for everything that happens here. reporter: he pushed back against some of the critical coverage of
6:05 pm
the company. but some investors are saying havingle ceo and chairman titles are not good. he's mete touch to kick out. but it means that is why people talk about him stepping down versus being replaced. there have been high-profile executives that left the company. instagram and whatsapp. some say for political issues and the other the virtual reality head seth. head -- headset. coo sheryl sandberg was afraid
6:06 pm
she would be pushed out. but zuckerberg said she is important to the company. if you look between amazon, netflix and google and apple, they have who lost since their record highs earlier this summer. liz: a harvard research group says this ways happened in 2016. the harvard group said it cannot be laid at the feet of facebook, or technology. president trump continued to get more coverage-however negative, the stories still covered his core substantive policy issues, immigration, jobs and trade. isn't it something that voters saw beyond what was going on on facebook and icing out conservatives and looked at trump's policies and voted for
6:07 pm
them. >> thank good froas fo -- thank goodness for that. when they are suppressing conservative speech, they are doing a disservice to our country. there are so many people who lost their facebook pages, they lost their followers because of their conservative views and their independent thought, and because facebook doesn't agree with them. so it is a big problem, a big concern. but it's great that americans who supported president trump have seen past the liberal platforms and were able to decide on what was rule and true in terms of the candidate at the time, president trump. liz: tomorrow people will see this what is going on and how facebook is manipulating the
6:08 pm
country it's jaw dropping. i'm looking to your point right now. the anti-media project. look at the tesla crisis and the casualties in afghanistan. the fry fall project. innocuous topics on their sites. millions of followers now unplugged on facebook. >> that's why they lost a lot of people as well. people want to knee what the truth is and what the real information is. they want to express their views for the people to see. when you have a platform like facebook which they say they are a platform, but they operate like a media company, they stand the risk of being regulated by government. if they don't change their ways and open those doors for conservative voices, i see it as something that's coming down the
6:09 pm
pike for sure. liz: tomorrow at the thanksgiving dinner table. i know people don't want to talk about politics. if you say donald trump is doing what al gore did in trying to reduce government regulation. if you say he's doing what schumer and ted kennedy wanted in cutting taxes, their liberal jaws drop. if you say donald trump is about border security like hillary clinton, gee -- joe biden and obama were. their jaws drop. >> it's a double standard when it comes to the policies you just mentioned. how they were on the same page at one point. now it's a divided country. it's sad to see. somewhat's causing that
6:10 pm
division? >> the division is coming from the left pushing for the removal of president trump from the office. they are in resist mode in anything he says or doing. you have people on the left who are saying for their followers to get in the faces of trump cabinet members and trump supporters. this divisiveness we are seeing in our country is escalating, which is a dangerous path for us to be on. people are going to start taking matters into their own hands. we have seen a number of trump supporters over the years who have been harassed, who have been threatened, who have been attacked. you can see a lot of these issues on breitbart.com. they have a running list of these people who have been under attack. when you have democrat leaders like nancy pelosi who say it's okay to get in the faces of
6:11 pm
trump supporters where they are, restaurants, gas stations, department stores, they are doing a disservice to our country. liz: let's bring in democrat strategist al mod mottur. zuckerberg is saying facebook is a force for good. it takes your information, sells it, and even if you try to unplug facebook, facebook stalks you. >> the they are essentially a massive media company. no one is looking at what they are doing or checking them or regulating them. somebody need to take a look at what they are doing and hold nemecheck. they have free rein to monetize
6:12 pm
your information and stifle free speech. it's not appropriate for a company to be taking a bias as if they are a media company and stifle speech. liz: does the argument hold up that the free market will fix this? >> i see that happening now. i know people who walked away from facebook because they are so tired of getting attacked because of their views. so the market can decide. in fact whether the facebook platform can move on in terms of keeping or losing viewers and users. if they don't change their ways and provide more transparency and open those doors to the conservative voices, i think government will be knocking on their door. personally i'm for limited government as much as position. but again. facebook, they say they are a platform, but they operate more
6:13 pm
like a media outlet. liz: go ahead, al. >> they are too important a company for the market alone to work. too many people will stay on and say oh well. they hope to be on it. they will say they abuse my privacy, but that's too bad for me. there are other companies in the cable space doing the same things but have rules with what they have to do with your privacy. facebook is unregulated. the other guys are unregulated. liz: you will be with us later in the show. new details about how much it will cost to deploy american troops at the border. jennifer griffin is at the pentagon. reporter: the cost of the operation could rise according to defense secretary jim mattis.
6:14 pm
i'm told while some troops may be home for christmas. those deployment orders could be extended. based on the current phased force laydown of 5,900 active component personnel threw december 2018, the estimated cost is approximately $72 million. this effort mass does not include the 2,000-plus national guardsmen sent earlier this year. in an unusual move from the white house, john kelly signed orders giving troops more authority to given help to the customs agents. defense secretary mattis explained to reporters that troop still would not for the

most of part come into contact with migrants. but if they did in addition to self-defense they could conceivably use force to protect a border patrol agent. if someone is beating on a border patrolman we could stop them beating on them and take them over and deliver them to a border patrolman. most of of these troops are engineers, most of will there will be for the holidays. liz: coming up later in the show, we'll talk to the vice president of the national border patrol council. the new york police department warns blustery winds may ground the balloons in the thanksgiving day parade. the last time the balloons were ground was in 1971. now the thanksgiving holiday

6:22 pm
took power and immigrated to the united states in 2012. and most of incredibly he continued taking bribes after that point while he was living here in the united states. it looks like about a billion in total. the venezuelans are suffering from food and medical shortages. the inflation rate is 1.3 million percent which is almost i am perceivable. 6:24 pm
terrorism. liz: we understand the reaction about what the president said about the journalists, saudi arabia with the murder of the colorado columnist, khashoggi. the government set aside cuba's abuses of its own people. it's gotten so bad in venezuela that they have china coming in with a smart car to monitor and track the locations of all venezuelans. the liberal media, forgive me for characterizing it that way. they said those stories aside. they set aside obama basically giving a pass to syria, not saying anything about the red line he drew in the sand. the green revolution was
6:25 pm
abandoned by the obama white house. >> i interviewed three iranian dissidents in prison under these regime. they were? jail at the time of the green movement. they couldn't believe obama just abandoned them. he said people were on the streets saying obama, where are you? whose side are you on? i think it depend on what kind of government you are whether the media pays attention to the human rights abuses. maybe it's the socialism that makes the media not want to talk about it. bill deblasio gave an interview saying most of americans have and socialist impulse. we look at places like venezuela and cuba and we flow what socialism looks like. bill deblasio said he thinks people want the government involved in their day-to-day
6:26 pm

lot of professionals. we have a lot of good people at the va. but there is a culture there that as gone on for so long. these are our veterans that we should give a debt to. the fact that als is double in veterans than civilians. liz: the way the president can reform the va is to get rid of government union career veterans. the union workers who run the regional offices. the hhs, i think agriculture and other agencies they have in the regions, political appointees running the regions. they are career union government workers running the region. maybe if you overturn the culture by putting political appointees there, you could change what's going on at the
6:34 pm
va. >> the va needs a complete culture overhaul. i'm a veteran and having experienced the va firsthand, and they have gotten better. they have had a culture for so long that's gone on for decades. our vets don't deserve this. to realize there are families not getting any money for this disease and others getting under paid while a small portion is being overpaid. it needs to be completely overhauls. liz: the va at one point dolled out $140 million in bonuses to its workers. congressmen who have done oversight of the va say we are hearing workers care more about getting their bonuses or doing full-time union duty on the job or caring more about their paid
