i'm susan li in for trish regan. president trump staking by his demand for $5 billion in border wall funding. the partial government shutdown in its 12th day will continue for as long as it takes to get money from congress. but democrats aren't budging either. edward lawrence is standing by in washington and has the latest from us. reporter: from what we are hearing out of the meeting that happened at the white house. both sides are talking at each other, not with each other. democrats decide they could not start negotiations until nancy pelosi won the gavel tomorrow. once the meeting began the department of homeland security secretary kirstjen nielsen started the conversation. chuck schumer leaned over to nancy pelosi and suggested she interrupt. kevin mccarthy says he's disappointed with democrats.

bill that secures our borders. >> $1.3 billion is not enough to keep the country safe. if chuck schumer and nancy pelosi aren't going to come off that number, they have to explain to the american people why they aren't supporting what it takes to keep the country safe. reporter: the democrats expect to pass their funding bill minus extra border wall funding. susan: we have a congressman who supports the president's efforts to fund a wall. great to have you with us, congressman. i would argue americans believe safety and security are vital to the country. why are we still so far apart upon wall funding. >> the democrats do not want border security. as kevin mccarthy said earlier, it's up to them to put
8:05 pm
something on the table they will agree too. tomorrow i expect a batch of bills with no funding to the wall. all that says to the american people is they don't want any type of security for the wall. it's not a matter of semantics, whether it's a black wall, fencing, metal posts, whatever. they just want security. they could end this thing tomorrow. if they could put sock on the table that would allow secure borders. anything he wants they fight. and so you know, we'll sit here as long as it takes. we showed when nancy pelosi said we didn't have the votes, put something to the senate, we did. 215-185. zero democrats voted for it. unless they change their tact we'll sit here forking long it takes. i hate it for the people who

8:09 pm
susan: border crossing have increased the last few months. take a look at the violent pictures from the southern border. tear gassing mobs and migrants lobbing rocks. >> it's an invasion. you can't have that as a sovereign nation. now is a time, if we don't do it now, then when will we do it? i don't think we will if it's not done now. we have shown the fortitude to put something forward. it's such a small amount of money. if security is not an issue, tell democrats to take the locks off the aisles. do away with security as you go through the airports. it's so important. susan: president trump says if you don't have borders you don't have a country.
8:10 pm
president trump pinning the blame on the democrats, the partial government shutdown. here is what he had to say from the white house today. president trump: we are in the shutdown because of the fact that the democrats are looking to 2020. they view this as an election point for them. i actually think it's bad politics. but i'm not thinking about the politics. i'm thinking about what's right and what's wrong. and we need a physical barrier. susan: remember when democrats were once for border security. take a listen. >>it is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years and we must do more to stop it. >> we simply cannot allow people to pour into the united states undetected, undocumented, unchecked. >> we do not want to do anything to encourage more illegal

8:13 pm
street gang member. that could have been prevented. democrats don't care about security, they only care about politics and they only care about votes. >> it couldn't be farther from the truth. first of all we are not afraid to give president trump a win. he just had a win on criminal justice reform. what we want is real border security that uses technology and uses drones, and something that's 21st century that will actually work. i even think this is about the wall anymore. fit was about the wall, president trump would have agreed to the $25 million for the wall he turned down in the daca deal. i think this is about president trump not wanting to let people into this country who don't look like him. >> democrats support sanctuary cities. sanctuary cities are against law abiding american citizens.
8:14 pm
democrats care more about people here illegally and criminal illegals than they do about the safety and security of their constituents of americans. i find it outrageous that democrats will not do what they need to do to secure our borders by whatever means necessary. the democrats need to get on board. this is about hard-working americans' safety and security. and i think it's a travesty that we are witnessing this today. it's unacceptable. >> when you say that president trump doesn't want to let people who look like him into this country. look at deneen and look at me, we are here. >> that's a ridiculous statement. we -- can you tell me why president trump will not accept the $25 million he wants for the wall instead of a daca deal. he said no to that.
8:15 pm
now we are not even talking about real border security. we know the wall will not actually secure the problems at the border. there is fencing along our border right now. susan: president trump said he wants a daca deal. >> he turned $25 billion for his wall down. this is about president trump kicking the can down the road. >> if democrats wanted to do something in regards to daca, former president obama, they had a super majority when he was in office. why was nothing done at that time. this is all about politics. and because president trump is in office and democrat politicians despise the man. >> i don't think this business politics. i think this is about president trump he stood in the oval office and said he would be proud to shut down the government. he's holding the government hostage and he's doing it to try
