7:00 pm
the prediction it could end soon. lou dobbs is next here on the fox business network. have a great evening. lou: good evening, everybody. president trump standing strong securing the u.s.-mexican border remains his top priority, ending the national security crisis. the president saying once again he may declare a national emergency if necessary to secure our border with mexico. >> i have the absolute right to do national emergency if i want. my threshold will be if i can't make a deal with people that are unreasonable. we can all play games, but a wall is a necessity. all of the other things, the sensors and the drones, it's all wonderful to have and it works well but only if you have the wall. if you don't have the wall, it
7:01 pm
doesn't matter. a drone isn't stopping 1,000 people from running through. lou: and the president is demappedding that that wall be funded and built. and today he walked out of a white house meeting after nancy pelosi refused to fund the border wall. rather than securing the border and keeping america safe, the radical dimms are insisting on resisting anything that the president proposes to score what they see as political points. pelosi and schumer's pathetic performance after last night's presidential address, being reduced to nothing but internet peoples. memes. and you're looking at one of my favorite memes. president trump visiting capitol hill meeting with senate republicans. the upbeat president saying his party supports him all of the way. something that cannot be said about the dimms. >> the republican party i can say, and i just left an hour meeting, we had a great time actually. there was no discussion about
7:02 pm
anything other than solidarity. we want national security and border security for our country. i just want to tell you that the republicans are totally unified. now if you were to ask the same question to the. connell: the democrats, you let me know in some of those districts where i won or are a little more towards sanity. you want them to run saying we don't have border security? you got plenty of democrats that do not want to be in this battle. lou: tonight we take up the president's ongoing battle to build his border wall and to end the national crisis along the southern border. legendary republican strategist ed rollins, congressman matt gaetz among our guests tonight. new reports, deputy attorney general ron rosenstein my leigh the justice department within weeks after the mueller report is finalized, according to some of the reporting.
7:03 pm
rosenstein ma has suggested secretly recording the presidenting with sayinpresideng sarcastic, and he signed the extension of the fisa warrant. and chuck schumer made a desperate plea asking the president to withdraw william barr's nomination as attorney general. >> mr. rosenstein's potential departure only heightens the stakes for mr. barr's nomination. from all accounts, mr. rosenstein has an an impartial actor at the head of the special counsel's investigation. now president trump is trying to replace folks like mr. rosenstein with conflicted loyalists like matthew whitaker and william barr. i still believe after the revelations about mr. barr's unsolicited memo, president trump ought to withdraw this nomination. lou: i'm sure he's going to do
7:04 pm
that straightaway. are you? attorney mitchell joins us tonight. taking up that question. the latest on the deep state's russia witch hunt. we begin tonight with president trump ripping into house speaker nancy pelosi and chuck schumer for their refusal to come up with the moneyed to fund the wall to fix the crisis. president trump leaving a white house meeting shortly aft it began calling it a total waste of time after they refused to fund the wall. we fur turn to john roberts >> the takeaway from today's events another the white house is it's not likely that the shutdown is going to end anytime soon. >> it's cold out here and the temperature wasn't much warm ner the situation room. >> after a second meeting in the situation room today, both sides emerged no closer to a deal to end the shutdown than they were going in.
7:05 pm
>> unfortunately the president just got up and walked out. he asked speaker pelosi, are yol you agree to my wall and she said no. he got up. said we have nothing to discuss and walked out. >> democratsdescribed the president as demanding and on that nate. as on thaobstinate. >> he left the room because speaker p pelosi said she would never agree to the border security proposal we have on the table. >> in a tweet president trump called the meeting a toast l wastetotal wasteof time. earlier in the day president trump upped the ante on his calls for a border barrier. >> human trafficking cannot be stopped if we don't have a steel barrier or a concrete wall,
7:06 pm
something very powerful. >> signing a bill to combat the scourge of human trafficking today, president trump said without a wall criminals can simply drive their victims across the border. he acknowledged the idea is primitive but insists that it works. >> they said it's a medieval solution, a wall. that's true. it's medieval because it worked then and it works better now. >> as the federal workers face their first missed paycheck on friday, some republican senators are growing concerned about the political impact. so president trump went up to capitol hill today telling senate republicans he' dug in and needs them to stand with him. >> i would say that we have a very very unified party, they want national security, they want to have a steel barrier or a wall of con creek, they don't care. i'll use any term they want. >> in the event the impasse continues, the white house is taking steps to mitigate the potential effects. the department of agriculture ensuring re1eu recipients they't

their food stamps. tax refunds will go out even if the shutdown extends into tax season. lou: john roberts a the the white house. joining us tonight, congressman matt gaetz. congressman, great to have you with us. and the president saying after nancy pelosi refused to put forward a proposition or to concede to his insis tans that a wall be funded and built that it's a waste of time and bye-bye as he put it. what's your thought? >> if the democrats' heads were spinning faster in washington, we'd have to call the exorcist. these are the same democrats today calling the wall racist, immoral and unacceptable who previously have voted for billions of dollars in fencing and border security. this makes s makes no sense to . there are a lot of wealthy democrats in washington who live behind the barriers. they don't have the barriers
7:08 pm
because they hate the people on the outside. they have them because they love the people on the inside. donald trump loves this country and he's fighting for the forgotten men and women who want higher wages, safe streets, rule of law and a preservation of this country's borders with language and culture. i don't think that's too much to ask and it's pretty ridiculous that the democrats continue come to the table with some of the same proposal that they've supported in the past. lou: it's becoming, it seems to me, becoming clear as it could be to all involved, democrats, republicans, the american people. and that is why negotiate over national security. this is the president of the united states. he says a wall should be built. that it's a national emergency. at that point the nation should rally behind him. democratsas well as republicans. but without question there shouldn't be further negotiation with these people who have been repeatedly arrogant and ignorant in their responses and refusing,
7:09 pm
absolutely abdicating their responsibilities whose people deserve to be safe as the president said, to have their borders secure. and the nation sovereign and without question secure. >> yeah. i wornd if nanci wonder if nancd chuck schumer are willing to make the phone calls to the family members who are grieving after people come across our border illegally and commit violence against the people who are here legally. you are right, lou, that the presidency carries with it a unique set of obligations and a unique perspective. donald trump has made those calls. he's met with those families. he understands what a porous border does to the american life and i think that's why he's fighting so hard. here's where we've got to be careful, lou. if at any time any president says i deem something to be an emergency so i'm going to do it.
7:10 pm
can you imagine what barack obama might have done to this country? lou: i know what he did with a pen and a phone. go right through the list. $150 billion to iran, a packaging up of billions of dollars in currencies and delivering it. the list is immense, it is shameful. it is remarkable. >> president trump undid a lot of that stuff. the good news is we elected a president with the guts to go in and call out that inappropriate behavior for what it was. barack obama exceeding his authority. so president trump actually is a deal maker. he wants to make a deal. the difference between government and real estate is that in real estate typically both sides want the deal because they both have something to gain from it. nancy pelosi and chuck schumer don't want to gain from a safer country. they want to continue to exploit the immigration issue to inflame the most radical left.
7:11 pm
lou: we've known it for years. we've known it when george bush was blathering about jobs that americans won't do and trying to set conditions and racialize illegal immigration and the juanton exploration of illegal immigrants in this country by the business lobby, the business rown table, the chamber of commerce, the koch brothers. and we're at the same position where this president is not talking about illegal immigration. he's talking about a threat to this country in the form of opioids, drugs that are the deadlyist in the history of the world, 70,000 ods in this country in the last year. the list goes on. it is a national emergency. it is a crisis and there could be no national dispute of that, could there? >> lou, you usually ask the question. but let me ask you one. will donald trump be reelected in 2020 if hi is not standing in front of a border security wall?
7:12 pm
lou: i think the answer to the question, and if i may, i would put it this way. there are some fights that are worth having. this is a fight that is worth having because the future of the country depends on it. i would say this. if this president is not reelect as a result of his insistence on a secure nation, a sovereign nation and providing for the safety of the american people, then we've lost a nation and it will be a shameful, shameful outcome were he not, reelected. is that a fair ans? >answer?>> it is. witwhat you just said reminded e of one of my last discussions where he said matt i'm going to fight with everything i somewhere for the americans who want a border and if i don't debt it i'm going to die with my boots on. that's the resolve that i want from the executive at 1600 pennsylvania avenue. someone who is willing to do everything he can to make sure
7:13 pm
that the american people see promises fulfilled. a lot want to maim promises in lks electionelections and then . this president plans on keeping his promises. lou: one of the strange things about this presidency are the number of those in the opposition, the resistance as they style themselves, who question his talent, integrity and stead fastness. when really the only question is whether the republican conference will stand with this president because it is their guts, their principles that has been obviously lacking throughout. >> that's clearly why the president was on the hill today, lou. as you have pointed out, there is a well-funded open borders wing of the republican party and president trump doesn't want to see them do violence to the efforts that all of us are undertaking to try to deliver for the american people. and i think he was very effective today when he got with a lot of those republican

senators, they understood how high the stakes are, not just for elections or legacies but for the type of country we're going to have for the next generation. lou: the national security of the united states. >> that's right. you've nailed it. i think they get that now. lou: all right. congressman matt gaetz you've gotten it for a very long time and have been one of those principle leaders. we appreciate it. the left wing national media wasting no time criticizing the president and his address to the nation. >> that should have come with a surgeon general's warning. it was hazard douse do thous to. >> the president repeating the dubious crimes he's made in the past. >> no one's mind are changed from last night. >> in a nicer voice. >> the president made his pitch directly to the american people in an address that was riddled with things that were not
7:15 pm
factual. >> intriguing to me is how much it lacked any new information. >> you consider that speech, what a powerful argument it makes against a theory of eve evolution. lou: no argument is quite as strong as the radical dimms who were making those specious remarks. we'll take that up and much more after the break. ed rollins joins us. stay with us. we'll be right back. each day justin chooses to walk. at work... and after work. he does it all with dr. scholl's. only dr. scholl's has massaging gel insoles that provide all-day comfort. to keep him feeling more energized. dr. scholl's. born to move. because they let me to customize my insurance, and as a fitness junkie, i customize everything. like my bike and my calves.

lou: don't you think your pal resolved the fed stance here saying they're going to be adaptive, they're going to be flexible, whether it is interest rate hikes or whether it is running up assets on the balance sheet? diswhsphwhr 100%. he spoked wall street but he's done a great job of walking back their stance. they're going to be data dependent. we don't have a lot of inflation out there. i think the market could deal with it. lou: one would be an annoyance. it would be outside of any basis given the lack of inflation. it's been my experience, and i've done this for a couple of years, that when fed chairmen decide to raise rates in the absence of inflation, that the results are always, well, disappointing, if not extremely painful. that's what happened here. >> i think a lot of times what the fed is prone to do is
7:51 pm
overshoot. they see, potentially see inflation coming and they start to raise the rates to stop it and they do it too much. the fact that we're talking about it before it's happened is a positive thing for the market. lou: and the markets have got plenty to worry about. what are you looking at? a 20% depreciation in equities? >> we had a 20% pullback. since christmas eve we've had a 10% rally in the markets. but i think the setup here for the market is to the upside. the reason i say that is a lot of the negative news is out there. a lot of the negative news is baked in. if we get decent corporate earnings, the market will have a good year. lou: what are the odds on decent quarterly earnings. the market is blaifg as if it's expecting a significant decline in earnings growth. >> you can look at apple as maybe a proxy for the market in that they had to lower their
7:52 pm
earnings and the stock has gotten punished from the 230 range all the way down to 150. lou: i love how you professionals say that the stock has been punished, not the investor. >> correct. the shareholders have been punished. but now the setup for a company like apple at 150 oa 150 or nowh the market in general trading after this 20% pullback, a 10% rally off of that, i think the setup is to be long, to buy the market at this price. lou: and volatility, do you think it's exacerbated? >> well, i think we got spoiled because volatility kind of left the market a year, year and a half ago. so we really got lulled into a false sense of security. let the markets be volatile. let the program trading come in. lou: i like the way you said that, as if we have a choice. >> you don't have a choice. but the choice for the viewers watching at home is not to try to trade every headline.
7:53 pm
not to buy because the market is up today and sell because the market is down tomorrow. kind of take a little bit of a longer term approach. lou: with this volatility warsenning over timworsening ovf it to the upside, it has been difficult and i have to believe it's driven aat of investors for some time. what do you think? >> driven investors out of the market? >> lou: yes. >> we've seen a lot of money coming out of big mutual funds. but unfortunately, if you look historically when retail sellers are bailing, it's a good time to be buying. i would just advise that the last thing you want to do is make decisions on your 401(k) or your retirement plan based on yesterday's headsline or tomorrow's headline. it usually don't work. lou: appreciate it. good to have you with us. >> thanks, lou. lou: we'll continue in just one moment. stay with us. president trump and the radical left at an impasse over the

lou: a reminder to vote in our poll tonight. the question is, do you believe president trump should insist that the border be secured before there can be any discussion of amnesty in any form whatsoever? cast your vote on twitter. i would like to hear from you. follow me on twitter,@loudobbs. here's where we are today. what we're looking at tomorrow. president trump called his meeting with chuck schumer and nancy pelosi at the white house today a quote, total waste of time. congressman matt gaetz discussing the radical dems' resistance on border security. >> these are the same democrats who are today calling a wall racist and immoral and unacceptable who previously have voted for billions of dollars in fencing and border security. this makes absolutely no sense to me. there are a lot of wealthy

democrats in congress who live behind physical barriers. lou: the president will be traveling tomorrow to mcallen, texas. there, he will tour the border with mexico as he considers an emergency -- national emergency declaration, something he says he has the authority to do. his attorneys back him up. >> i have the absolute right to do national emergency if i want. my threshold will be if i can't make a deal with people that are unreasonable. we can all play games, but a wall is a necessity. all of the other things, sensors and the drones, it's all wonderful to have and it works well but only if you have the wall. if you don't have the wall, it doesn't matter. a drone isn't stopping a thousand people from running through. lou: deputy attorney general rod rosenstein planning to step down after the president's nominee for attorney general, william barr, is confirmed and the special counsel releases its,

well, russia witch hunt report. that's it for us tonight. we thank you for being with us. congressman frank rooney, gordon cheng and jason chaffetz join us tomorrow. hope you will as well. thanks for being with us. good night from new york. trish: breaking tonight, the number of migrant families crossing our border hitting a record. this as president trump walks out of a border wall meeting after democrats refuse to negotiate. we have the details on the surging cost to american taxpayers and it is clear this is not just a humanitarian crisis but indeed, a financial one. as dianne feinstein once said, we cannot be the welfare system for all of mexico. um-hum. that was dianne feinstein, the liberal senator from california. she said that. she and her democrat colleagues actually wanted a wall, they wanted border security and they wanted law and order in our
