he alluded to a photograph taken was senator bob menendez at the beach at the winter retreat in puerto rico. thirty democrats chartered a private plane to meet with lobbyists. democrats and the shutdown is the president's fault, not addressing these optics. senator menendez tweeted about hud contracts and how they have expired or are set to expire leaving 3000 people at the risk of losing their homes. the democrats say the president needs to open the democrats first and then we'll talk about border security. the president saying your priorities are messed up and you should deal with all of it at the same time. >> lou: one wonders why you pay any attention to senator menendez on any question with those kind of optics. what career could he possibly have left? that's a rhetorical question. let me ask you to respond to one thing, it looks like the government shutdown is affecting the lens on the camera inside the white house. the shutdown is getting serious when it's affecting those lenses. >> i think that was a factor

that we are outside in the way when inside. i will tell you it did affect the shutdown. it's interesting that senator menendez did not mention, at all the optics of being on the beach. he tweeted several times after that photo came a. still nothing from the democrats on it. it's interesting. >> lou: it is interesting. if they enjoy the optics of menendez with the bikini-clad young lady at poolside, and puerto rico during the shutdown, if they enjoy the optics of partying with lobbyists importer puerto rico, i think that tells you where they are headed, it is not a good place. lawrence, you are in a good place. the white house. we appreciate it so much. thank you.

federal court. it's great to have you with us. let's start with the bar confirmation hearing. it turns out that bar is going to tell everybody it is really important that robert mueller finishes very serious work. just one problem. nothing i read about his comments suggested why he thinks it is so important. your reaction? >> my concern, lou, is that he has been a friend of robert mueller's for a long time. a very close personal friend. i read recently that their wives go to bible study together and they have a long and close personal history. i've also heard from good lawyers that he is a good lawyer and an outstanding candidate to do the job the way it needs to be done. i have mixed reviews on both sides.

>> lou: i don't want to try to adjudicate his confirmation, whether he should or should not be. if the president wants them, that's good enough for me. the issue i have god's, why is it so important for mueller to finish the work that hasn't produced a thing. if you include the fbi investigation that was the foundation for the special counsel, it is over two years of nonsense. not a single thing has come forward. why, why is it so important that mueller said there and continuing to be an aggravating influence on our entire -- the president, the justice department, the fbi, and the nation? >> all indications are that it is close to being finished. since there is nothing to show for, hopefully mr. mueller's report will show them, and that will be the end of it. obviously, we can tell from everything coming out that the entire scenario was a lie, carefully crafted and concocted by the fbi and mr. brennan and associates from the beginning.

>> lou: if this special counsel were worth a damn, if he had any integrity he would've turn this into a investigation of the fbi, the justice department, the cropped fools who ran the place for years, and who persist today. am i wrong? >> i agree with you completely. you are right. it should have been an investigation that went into the hillary clinton e-mail cover up. the iranian one scandal, all of it. of course, mr. mueller couldn't investigate that because he was part of it. he was the one who is head of the fbi. he was probably e-mailing hillary clinton on her her on secure server. he was conflicted from the beginning and should have never been appointed special counsel. the entire thing greeks from its inception. it probably began in 2015 from the minute the president wrote down the escalator. >> lou: i think it certainly did take on a life when it became
