congressman michael burgess. first of all, this one is out of left field. nancy pelosi wants to cancel the state of the union? tell me, sir, why? apparently we need to lay it out for her and other democrats why it would be such a bad idea. >> i remember long before i thought about running for congress, i'm just a regular guy working for a living. but people talking about not letting bill clinton give a state of the union. republicans were criticized for denying the president the ability to come and talk to the american people directly from a joint session of the senate and house and congress it's a big deal and a big backdrop. that's on speaker pelosi's mind. she doesn't want to give the president this format to take his case directly to the

american people because we know he's very good at that. trish: he's the president of the united states elected by the american people. we the american people have the right to a state of the union address. for her to try to push that aside -- we talk about venezuela on this show and it's important to do so because some on the left want to take that route with socialism. to me you are no better if you are not going to address the american people as promised like every president has before you. yet she wants to send us down that path. >> and required by the constitution. >> we'll have more on the constitution tonight. hold that thought. trish: i want to ask you about the money being spent. guess what, congressman, it's cost us the wall. and before it's all said and done, it may be the wall and then some.

we have spent nearly $6 billion as a result of this shutdown, as a result of the shutdown. i wonder, is this worth it for them? what is the goal here? >> i find it hard to see what the secondary gain of the house speaker and the house democrats are. we have our rules committee that continues to meet and they bring bills forward that they send to the floor that have no hope of passing. it's an exercise in futility. what is frustrating to me is when you hear their rhetoric, when you hear them talk. they say all we are asking is to open the government for 30 days and we'll negotiate curing that time. but speaker pelosi foreclosed that opportunity last week when they went down to the white house. and the president asked them, he said i allowed things to open up for 30 days. can we talk about tboarder security? they said no, not a penny, not a

dime, and that's when he said bye-bye. trish: i keep saying i will play this sound just to remind the world of where they once stood. i'm playing it every single night we have a shutdown going. here is the whole democratic club saying they believed in stronger borders at one time. >>it is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years and we must do more to stop it. >> we simply cannot allow people to pour into the united states undetected, undocumented, unchecked. >> we do not want to do anything to encourage more illegal immigration into this country. >> the american people are fundamentally pro legal immigration and anti-illegal immigration. we'll only pass comprehensive

reform when we recognize this fundamental concept. trish: what happened? >> where are those guys? i could work with them? but when the speaker gave her answer to the president's oval office address she said yes i'm for border security and i want technology to detect when a border crossing occurs. actually i want to prevent it. once somebody crosses, that's the problem. 10,000 children being cared for in facility in our country because their governments wouldn't provide care for them and sent them to us in those caravans. it's not right, it's not fair to the american taxpayer. they are spending money on foreign aid for those countries and we are being asked to pay for their children. trish: i will take word out of dianne feinstein's mouth.

something she said in the 90s. we cannot be the welfare system for mexico. a democrat. i will leave it there. a new migrant caravan is growing tonight through guatemala and ultimately straight for our border. president trump is insisting only a wall can stop the waves of migrants from illegally entering our country. but democrats are refusing to so much as negotiate border security. fox news strategic analyst, retired four star general jack keane. do walls work? >> it's indisputable they do. all the data supports that. when they put the one up in san diego, the crossings came down by 90%. clearly they work. particularly in high intense areas like that where you have

populations on both sides of it. there are places where you don't need a wall. we have 1,954 miles of border. the president on the advice of the border patrol wants a thousand miles of fencing as opposed to 2,000. but the reality is there is 654 miles of fencing that's already out there, that the democrats and republicans have approved. since the president has been in office they approved 100 miles of fencing. most of of that is replacement. but democrats and republicans are saying fencing is needed. we need surveillance. we need more border patrol people to apprehend people. but what the border patrol folks are telling us is you need something to slow them down so that we can apprehend them. if you don't have that and they come over in numbers, then we lose control.

and that's what this is all about. trish: you are not coming at this from a political angle. usual coming at this from reality. you are saying fences, walls, they have worked before. historically we have seen that and we see that to this day in specific locations. you also point out, democrats have been in favor of a lot of this. i read in the sound earlier they have been big time in favor of it. what is it about now. as a member of the military with such having had a tremendous career, does it frustrate you to see it's just down to well this is something donald trump wants so we are not going to give it to him? >> i try to stay out of the politics of it. but there is political stubbornness here. it's unfortunate because we obviously have people paying a price for this literally.

who are not being paid. and others working without pay because they are essential. certainly that i have great empathy for. we just have got to be able to come to to some kind of agreement here. it would seem to me that put some kind of offer on the table that possibly the democrats to use end old slogan from a movie cannot refuse, maybe we can get some kind of agreement here. trish: maybe. though i'll not hold my breath. we have been looking at these pictures and i noted we have seen so many people carrying the honduran flag or guatemalan flag. i ask you as someone who had such a tremendous career in our military. when you see thousands of people, primarily young men heading towards the united states of america saying they are cominged in holding their

flags, certainly it's not very good p.r. for them. but what do you think? some people are saying this feels like an invasion. is it? >> it's a violation of our sovereignty having thousands of people trying to penetrate our border. 2,000 people per day is what the border patrol is telling us per day, attempts to penetrate. i'm hoping that given the new mexican administration, at least the promises they made to secretary pompeo, when they approached mexico's southern border, that they can choose to make those crossing, the mexicans are telling us they will reinforce that and attempt to deny entry. they didn't do that the last time, because when violence was imminent they opened up the floodgates and let them come

through. they are also offering asylum in mexico if they seek it and the opportunity to work. maybe this will be different than the last caravan because we have a new administration in place. the other thing, trish. it's not just the border wall. we need new legislation. the loophole in the law they are using is the one designed for human traffickers who were taking young girls across the border. what we wanted them to be able to do is seek asylum so we could take them, separate them from the human traffickers and bring them into the united states. even though their entry was technically illegal, it was a forced entry by the traffickers. trish: we do need to change it, and we need some of these countries down there to get their acts together so these people don't keep trying to come

remarkable, and i believe that our founding fathers were able to anticipate as much as they did. we have been talking a lot about venezuela on this show and some of the challenges the banana republics actually have, and you want to know one of the reasons they have them? i will tell you. they didn't have an alexander hamilton or john adams or george washington or thomas jefferson or james madison. we got lucky. we did. part of staying lucky is respecting the document that has provided us with all the success we have had for the last 230 years. remember that. beto. here with me to react, i have presidential historian doug wead who is a great admirer of those great men and their brilliance.

maduro regime is not only a threat to venezuelans, it's a threat to the region it's a regime involved in human rights violations and drug trafficking and illegal mining. it's affecting the region. it's affecting the security of the region. the sooner we get democracy in venezuela the better for the region. trish: we talked so much about caravans of migrants making their way through the u.s. venezuelans now may soon become part of that. you have seen firsthand that crisis as so many venezuelans flee into columbia and elsewhere because they are look for a new opportunity. let me ask you about something else. this regime, it's not good. there have beenlings, possibly to hezbollah.

the former vice president is said to have ties and may have actually secured passports for people that would-be terrorists. so that's an issue. and you have the fact, basically anybody who is an enemy gets locked up and put in jail. they took five american citizens. five citgo employees. they brought them down will for a quote-unquote business meeting and they locked them up. those five americans are still there today. what happens to them. what happens to all the people in prison. what happens to you yourself? you were lucky enough to get out in time. >> as we speak there are 400 political prisoners in venezuela including soldiers who disagree with the regime. i am one of the 13 mayors who were illegally removed.

i went 35 days in hiding before i fled the country through brazil. this regime is linked to terrorist groups. but with no doubt about it, in colombia they have found in venezuela a save haven. that's a threat for venezuelans and for the region. maduro is involved with the criminal economy. also iranians are playing venezuela. russia is deeply involved in venezuela. we are facing something unique in the region. and as i said, i think we are close to restore democracy and close to retore freedom. impart of that generation that wants to rebuke the country, that wants to make venezuela a save place, a free place, and

especially a country our children, our next generation can enjoy. >> it would be so wonderful to see that. a country with so many tremendous natural resources. and a country we want to be friend with. we don't want you hanging out with the chinese and the iranians and the russians. we should have that relationship and there is an opportunity if you put the right people. if the people put the right people there and you have that shot at democracy. i want to remind the viewers that our vice president of the united states mike pence did call the 35-year-old engineer who is the interim president as far as your country goes, is recognized by everyone, as well as brazil. the president has not come out and full-on said he's going to recognize him. but it would be a different image, right, for venezuela.
