government shutdown friday but will head for legal challenges. liz: angry backlash from governor cuomo and other backers after amazon canceled its plans to build another headquarters there. the queens chronicle, a local new york city newspaper out with this newspaper. stop the nonsense and take amazon's $27 billion in economic growth. after killing new york city's headquarters, not sure progressive democrats deserve either title. this was anti-progressive and anti-democratic. polls show 70% of new yorkers were in favor. victory lap for them, not for

new york city. >> in the end it was the pressure ocasio-cortez that led amazon to pull the plug on the project bringing their headquarters at long island city queens, and high-paying jobs with an average salary of $150,000. the catch for that of course was that amazon was promised billions of dollars in tax incentives to come here to new york and that's what got under the skin of some of those local politicians. amazon pointed to that in its statement. so they pulled the plug. some of the local leaders were not oppose. earlier today in our live broadcast i spoke to congressman gregory you meeks. here is what he told me. >> i think that, you know, it's

short-sighted for my colleagues who can't want it and short-sighted for amazon for quitting so quickly. we should have had both stay at the table and work this thing out. reporter: short-sighted is how the congressman describes the whole thing. one of the surprising developments was not only did amazon cancel its move to new york, it said it's not looking elsewhere. it says instead of pick something other city, it will move forward with a similar project in northern virginia. it moved forward there and with a smaller operation in nashville, tennessee. liz: ocasio-cortez and the other democrats against this project are talking as if nearly $3 billion cash pile ready to go for housing or for education. there was never a cash pile of

$3 billion. it was tax credits over 10 years if amazon hit their job targets. right, connell? reporter: exactly right. i was speaking to a member of the state assembly who represents a neighboring district. he's in that ocasio-cortez cam and was i was making that point to him and challenging him on point he's making. it's not necessarily and i either/or. just because amazon would be coming here doesn't mean local businesses would necessarily be forced out, or if amazon is leaving here, that somehow that pot of money that was tax incentive could have gone to those local businesses. that won't necessarily happen. liz: it's striking that cortez and the democrats against this

deal were saying i.c.e., the border patrol guys have a contract with amazon cloud business. it's a platform for a million small businesses. it helps create and foster small businesses. the final point i make is this, the criticism coming from the democrats against cortez and those against it. they were arguing, cortez and other hard-left liberals were saying taxpayers would be subsidizing job growth. they are happy to suction dies the green new deal. reporter: one local resident earlier in the day said everybody looks at this -- it turns out in many ways to be a zero sum game. they were arguing about say the fact we don't like what we see as corporate welfare. maybe you don't like what you

see as corporate welfare. but now you have nothing. it wasn't as if you said we don't want to give them these tax incentives. now they are leaving so you are not getting the jobs promised. you have to be careful what you wished for. so what many people were wishing for aren't coming. liz: other news on amazon, amazon is getting attacked for reportedly pay nothing federal income taxes for the second year straight. reporter: amazon as you well know has been a colossal success transforming the retail landscape and speeding the demise of brick and mortar stores and raking in huge profits. it made double wait made the year before. but it got a tax rebate of $129 million. and that has infuriated many on the left. here is bernie sanders in a

billion, they just wanted to shake us down for it. reporter: elizabeth warren says amazon just wawctd away from billions in taxpayer bribes because some elected officials in new york weren't sucking up to them. liz: amazon follows the tax code. it pays out a lot in stock-based the compensation then helps amazon workers share in amazon success. amazon has also spent more than any on ther u.s. company on research and development. that's lowers reportable income. local new yorkers were excited to see their home prices going up, including in the poorest neighborhoods. the housing market nationwide has been struggling, including

estate guy? >> no. it's unfortunate for the neighborhood of longed island city for all the local businesses here. one thing about long island city, it's a bedroom community and people pretty much just come here to sleep. and there are businesses suffering for years because they don't have the foot traffic other areas have. liz: are you hearing not just from your fellow realtors but also from businesses that they are upset the amazon headquarters is now gone? are they upset? >> they are jury was at all the local elected officials. and everybody, the children of new york were a sacrificial lamb. this is really devastating. liz: why the children of new york? >> it was an opportunity for 25,000 people to get jobs. 1,600 of those from queens

how in the world will congress read 1,200 pages of the budget deal in less than 24 snow showers. >> they won't. leadership will give them an executive summary. if they had the time to read it, it's corporation by reference and other materials. you would have to read 30,000 pages to understand a 1,200-page document. it's all created by special interests and they don't know. that's a big problem america when our legislators are voting on things they have no clue about. liz: charlie rangel admitted that. he said we don't read the bills. we went through parts of the bill. here what else we found. the border deal has $14.9 billion for border patrol. $7.6 billion for i.c.e. and $192

million to help migrants at the border for medical care and busing them until they get their status. reporter: we have reports of a dust-up at the shelter in piedras negras. it's an altercation but is under control because of largely the big police presence outside the shelter. fell ralle police have been donning riot gear and posted outside. but tensions peaked between a handful. migrant after authorities would reportedly not let them leave to shop at some local businesses. refugee advocacy groups say emotions are running high and

emotions are building inside the shelter where 1,600 people wait until their turn is called. once that happens, it can take anywhere from 2 to 3 hours for the credible fear interview to be conducted. that's the first step in trying to seek asylum. if customs and border patrol agents or officials believe there is in fact a credible fear or threat, then they are passed on to the next part, and that means they are taken to a detention facility to begin the asylum process with the courts. this particular area can only process under 20 migrants a day because they just don't have enough resources or space for that matter to processor one *. so it could take a while to get

taxes by president trump. the members of congress who participated in the shutdown should look in the mirror. the shutdown isn't going to cause a recession. liz: federal workers did feel the hit to their paycheck. congress has yet to pass a bill that says we'll forego our pay if we do a shutdown. so there is no recession. the economy is still growing. goldman sachs says noise recession in sight. >> i will tell you my small business is doing well. but we have to keep the pedal to the metal. i would like to see us get rid of red tape and regulation. in california small businesses being smothered by regulation and litigation. liz: to your point.

income inequality, the critics are saying is not fixed by the government. the government creates often wasteful programs. we double the federal debt, there is still income inequality. half much a lower bracket moves higher and half in the top went down. fox news is showing people more optimistic and according to fox news more people want capitalism. they do not want socialism. they totally reject it. >> and they can look at the history of the world. look at what the united states has been able to do. we get investment and productivity. that comes from capitalism. that comes from new business. it comes from making workers more productive. you know what hurts or stand card of living? government regulations and red tape.
