trish: tonight the gop is splintering as a growing number of lawmakers urge the president to back away from his national emergency declaration for the border wall. this is a mistake politically. but it's a mistake for our economy and it is a humanitarian disaster. we do have a national crisis. tonight the administration asked the pentagon to provide shelter for 5,000 children who crossed the border. the highest number of family units migrating to the u.s., the highest numbers on record. the democrats and some republicans downplay those problems there is a serious cost to our economy. an illegal population depresses the wages of legal workers because more workers are willing to work for less.
11:32 pm
numerous studies quantified the cost to american taxpayers. estimating $100 billion a year tied to illegal immigration. here's what i do not get. on the one hand the extreme left. i'm thinking ilhan omar and her friends. they want open borders while urging the united states to do nothing to help the people of venezuela. now, if we are going to be logical and thoughtful and strategic about all of this, shouldn't we want to encourage people to stay in their own home countries and wouldn't we want to encourage freedom and prosperity in those places so close to us so the migrants aren't tempted to come here to the united states?
11:33 pm
of course the left's logic may be strategic and be logical, not for the health of our country, but for their own machiavellian political instincts. the alt-left wants to open our borders, drain our economy, allow illegals to vote, encouraging a totally dependent population. it's a recipe for disaster. the republicans would be wise to stick by the president. meaningful immigration reform is what we need. former advisor to u.k. prime minister david cameron, steve hilton. i know you dealt with a lot of this in the u.k. yourselves in terms of the immigration crisis. but, if you really want to help
