lou: this economy, the trump economy, booming. jobless claims today, you've got to -- this is incredible -- falling to a 50-year low under this president. and the president touting the great news on the economy. >> a lot of good things are happening. a lot of good things are happening in the world. our economy is the best it's ever been. our employment numbers, unemployment and employment are

the best they've ever been. we have more people working right now in the united states than we've ever had before, almost 160 million people. lou: wow. and on wall street, what was the reaction? stocks closing mixed. just another day in the trump economy. the dow down 14 points, the s&p flat, the nasdaq down 17. volume on the big board, 2.9 billion shares. crude oil flat as well. gold and silver, you got it, flat. and a reminder, listen to my reports three times a day coast to coast on the salem radio network. i am never flat on salem. or fox, for that matter. joining me now, john lonski, managing director at moody's. john, let's talk about the happiest of times economically. this, i don't -- i know no one foresaw. this level of ebullience about the economy when president trump was elected -- >> that labor market story is

incredible. i never thought i would live to see the day when we had fewer than 200,000 weekly jobless claims. this is the lowest ratio to the size of payroll employment in history. lou: right. and it's the lowest since october, you know, 49 years ago. it's remarkable, to me, to see this kind of growth, to see this kind of market expansion and appreciation. they're just -- we are hitting on every cylinder that an economy could ask -- >> you know, wages are growing more rapidly, yet there seems to be no threat of faster price inflation, no need for interest rates -- lou: jerome powell is walking around scratching his head. he's so distraught that there's no inflation present in the economy, he's going to go party with the democrats this weekend. >> you know, i went back and i tried to find the last time core inflation, core pc price index

inflation was above 2.5% year to year in a quarterly basis. lou: right. >> i had to go all the way back -- lou: '70s? >> 1923. 1970s was the last time the phillips curve was in effect when you had a higher unemployment rate, faster price inflation. so you're talking about powell, this gives me the impression that people at the fed are still dancing to a disco beat. they're trapped in the 1970s -- [laughter] and they can't accept how the new reality of -- lou: yeah, it is, to me, surprising to watch, to have watched wall street, joining with the bubbleheads at the fed wanting to raise interest rates last october. they said, well, you've got to have that, we've got to have what they call tools in the tool kit to deal with whatever happenses to the economy, so we've got to raise rates, irrespective of the markets. they went along with that. the president comes out and says you're out of your with mind,

jerome powell. cut rates, stop it now, and then there's this clash and clutter and clacking, and the next thing you know wall street now agrees with the president that we have to keep interest rates low. and jamie die loan, the other day -- jamie dimon the other day admitting without saying that the president was right. >> and trump was spot on, latter part of 2018. interest rates are too high, no need for that rate hike. and sure enough, the bond yield comes down to 2.5%. what happens to mortgage applications for the purchase of a home, we now have the strongest four-week arm for that metric of -- average for that metric of the current economic recovery. and, by the way, not the entire equity market was flat today. we did have some nice advances posted by housing-related share prices. lou: right. i'm still going to call it flat though because the indexes were flat. i want some action in that market, you know? and we're getting very nice

appreciation, and i love it. how long does it last, john lonski? >> this could go on and on and on as long as we can9 continue to move that unemployment rate lower no matter how slowly. lou: don't you find it interesting we're not hearing a word from the fed, that's a positive, we're not hearing any of this silly, reflexive nonsense from the business press about, oh, my god, the u.s./china trade talks aren't going well, they're going well. there's none of that. there's no suddenly any interest on the part of investors in that. so exactly what are investors focused on right now that is creating such stability? >> what they're focusing on is the expected continued growth of profits moving forward. nobody's written off profits yet, though we are probably going to have a first quarter here in 2019, we'll start getting reports -- lou: a tough quarter to quarter -- >> but as long as the job market

is healthy, consumer spending's going to hang in there. and, ultimately, it is consumer spending, what consumers spend on housing and what not that drives the u.s. economy. lou: right. and i, i'm still a big fan of business investment. i like to see more of that. >> you will see, you know, capital spending if consumer spending grows. lou: well -- >> all the more so with these more favorable tax treatment of capital spending. lou: okay. i've got to call my broker. wait a minute, never mind, i have to wait until the show's over. >> i keep on saying hold, and the equity market keeps going higher. lou: then i'm going to keep listening to you. hold, it is.
