matt welch is here, along with jimmy faye la. we've got real clear politics, cofounder and executive editor, tom bevin. welcome. so let's talk a little bit about the political landscape where bernie is working to continuously differentiate himself from a field that has gone pretty pa far left. but right now his biggest threat seems to be joe biden and you say bernie has an advantage. why? >> i think bernie's support is deeper and wider than widen's right now. you look at the fund-raising numbers. bernie blew away the field, many more donors and raising more money. he's got the base behind him. kennedy: can he sustain that? >> i think he's clearly the front runner. i think the field is wide open. but somebody is going to have to step up and beat him. and the question is, who is that going to be? there's no obvious choice right now. if biden isn't the guy, you

know, everybody else is pretty far back at this point. kennedy: i want to ask you, matt, because you've done a lot in terms of modern political history. was bill clinton as much of a stair in his party in 1991 as bernie sanders is now in. >> oh hell no. he was seen as the up and coming new democratic wing, not going to be labor style democratic party 37 but there was a lot of people in that party back then. al gore was like that. joe biden was considered like that. he was a long shot in 199 1991 r sure. mayor pete was polling in,ability was ne, i believe ne, bernie was polling 21% and mayor pete was at 16%. the mayor of the 301 fr 301st lt town in the country. kennedy: we're going to talk about pete tu buttigieg.

it's a fascinating case. we don't know where the threats are rm co coming from. i think it was smart for him to go on fox news. he was getting a lot of heat from the ultraleft. >> you have to go on fox news. he's trying to reach other voters. everybody on msnbc agrees with him. the only people watching cnn is don lemon's parents. they're only watching because they got stuck at the airport. they're thinking cnn is on, i guess we've give it another shot. his candidacy plays into trump's one super power, the economy. it's hard to demonize this economy when in reality unemployment is at an historic low, wage growth at an historic high. this plays to trump's strength. if he was to run against biden and promise to give more massages. they're already out there. we don't need more.

>> that's true for any democrat. they're going to have to confront the economy. in 2016 when you went on the ground in iowa and new hampshire who were choosing between sanders and trump. there was a lot of overlap between the two candidates. kennedy: yeah but never underestimate the value of populous demagoguery and that's what trump and sanders were doing and what they continue to do. when they go to the populist u message they're able to expand beyond the party lines. >> he admitted he will raise your taxes. >> yes. >> and that is -- again, i admire his honesty if you're picking up someone's daughter saying i'm going to get a 12-pack and hit the sheets in the motel, probably not leaving the house. >> doesn't campaign own raising taxes here. kennedy: there's in way that they can do what bernie is promising without tanking the economy, raising tax osar both.

rhodes scholar, afghan war veteran. but there is simply no question that the relentlessly positive coverage and gushing commentary is what's fueling the rise in the polling and the fund-raising that you mentioned from a guy that none of us have heard of sings or eight weeks ago. he's still a real long shot to win the nomination. kennedy: he is. but he has so many things going in his favor, including a lot of the field that has seemed to peter out. they're not talking about clob shar or gillibrand. people are googling pete buttigieg more than joe biden. what does that tell you. >> that he's the media of the month. but you can't divorce this from the fact that he's the first gay major presidential candidate. i saw a poll saying 70% of people are comfortable voting for a gay person for president. that's great.

but then i thought the other 30% might be an obstacle for him. he talks openly about his faith. he has potential here but people are going to say what did you accomplish in south bend. of course he comes back and says, at least i've run something in politics unlike donald trump. kennedy: that's true. he has executive experience and he was overwhelmingly reelected in a very important city that is way up north. north vernon is way down south. and french lick isn't all it's cracked up to be as well. that is a joke. you can use that one. he reminds me of senator barack obama who was a person people didn't know a lot about but they were able to project their dreams on to his blank screen which is something that president obama had written about. >> buttigieg is emulating obama that he's running on his biography, his personality.

landmarks tonight still burning. the fire in notre dame in paris started in the attic. an hour later the entire roof and spire collapsed. thousands of people weep in the streets. our fox correspondent is live in paris with more. reporter: it's just after 3:00 in the morning here in paris. things are quiet but the damage has been done to one of the great landmarks of paris, of france of the whole world. our camera man will zoom in and show you what we're seeing. we're seeing water being sprayed on the cathedral and we're seeing movement around the top, inspections being done to the cathedral. earlier today it was engulfed in flames and smoke. it's believed that fire broke out around renovation work of the spire on the back knave of the cathedral. the spire went down, the roof was caught up in flames and timber went into and flames

engulfing the interior of the church. luckily, however, a lot of firemen, something like 600 worked to keep the flames in check and the structure is safe. the two towers are good but in fact inside very, very damaged. some -- many of the artifacts that were there luckily were saved but there is a lot of destruction. french president macron came out to tour the site a few hours ago. he is calling on the people of france, the people of the world actually to help contribute to what will be a mammoth job to bring this 850-year-old structure back close to what it was. again, this coming during easter week here in paris, around the world, and the symbol of the catholic church, symbol of the french nation. couldn't have gone down at such a terrible time. again, i've lived here for nine years. i'm talking to people who have

lived here. it is an emotional time for the french. a time when they're having their own political problems and had this happen. but again, the feeling is that it was not arson. certainly wasn't terrorism. the feeling is it was start bid the renovation work as they were trying to fix this cathedral up and now it's badly damaged, kennedy. kennedy: thank you so much. and of course we all hope for the resurrection of that beautiful cathedral this important week. well the wait is finally almost over. the justice department announcing today attorney general william barr will release a redacted version of the mueller report on thursday morning. the battle of course far from over. democrats demanding to see the entire thing, no redactions. the president today said we already know what's inside. he tweeted mueller and the ag based on mueller findings and great intelligence have already ruled no collusion, no obstruction. these were crimes committed by

kennedy: that is going to be problematic for them. if there is something so serious that the president has recently done or is in the process of doing and he needs to be removed, democrats really need to surgically figure out what that is and go after it and let people no in an objective and honest way. i think, unfortunately, you're right. they're looking for so much and in the process of that. >> subpoena canon. let's shoot it out, see what comes back. kennedy: you think bill barr should have his own subpoena canon in the form of the grand jury. tell us about that. >> up with of the things that the president mentioned is investigating the investigators. and bill barr started a frenzy when he said he was going to look at that. kennedy: i don't have a team together. >> i'm not saying they did anything wrong but when you use these powers someone should take a look at it and make sure they're right. my argument is we've had two investigations, the trump investigation and the hillary clinton e-mail one np in the

hillary clinton e-mail one they didn't use the grand jury. grand jury the subpoena and up diet. in the mueller one they did use it. they ended up not coming up with collusion material but they did get people to cooperate to a degree. kennedy: they also didn't let everyonanyone off of the hook ie mueller probe. >> this is a bigger deal. they may think that pieces of the mueller rosht might give them what nay ear looking for. but if mr. barr is serious, and i think he is, this investigation is going to be a lot tougher. and if he announced a grand jury were looking into it, i think that would send shock waves to the former fbi, doj officials. kennedy: what would they have to do if they were compelled to testify? >> that's one thing. you want someone to testify before a grand jury to get their statements on the record. their version of the story. and if you lie to a grand jury, you're in a lot of trouble. kennedy: people like peter strzok aren't worried about

lying to congress, are they? >> not as much. lying to the grand jury is a different category. grand jury can indict. you want to get to the truth, indict someone. and this may happen. kennedy: i don't want to get to the truth to protect the president. i want to know how much power these people have and how they're welding their influence. and if there is corruption there there. and if so, what can you do structurally the stop it. >> that's a great question. because, look. we've always had corrupt politicians. nothing new about that. politicians come and go and some of them go to jail. but if the people that we rely on to enforce the rule of law are themselves krumented by cory politics, that's not a problem of the system. that's an attack on the system from within. kennedy: yes. >> i think the punishment has to be more severe for people who are given an oath and they're given, as you mentioned, great powers over the rest of us,

all of the other great stuff in the tax bill either. it wasn't just a reduction in rates. you ask the average american wh their effective tax rate is they probably have no idea. but they know they get the child tax credit and that was doubled under the plan and expanded for the people to take it. businesses can invest in underserved communities, that was included. and the first federal plan to allow for family leave, that was included in the federal ta tax plan. kennedy: but people have to take responsibility for their own finances and you encourage people to go into their hr departments and do what with their w4s. >> to make sure they're correct. any life event can really affect your tax withholding. a marriage, divorce, have a child. that's going to change how much money is coming out of your paycheck but only if you change your withholding with the hr department and with that w4. that's something that didn't happen in the be.
