4:00 am
lou: good evening, everybody. the trump economy is soaring and the radical dimms are reeling. president trump in minnesota reminding voters there and everywhere who he's accomplished in two years. more than half a million manufacturing jobs created since he was elected, economic growth 3%, minority unemployment at the lowest levels in history. the number of people working at an all time high. the stock market up $7 trillion since he was elected. and working men and women haven't done better in decades. the middle class, once again, growing, not contracting and wages are rising, not falling,
4:01 am
not stagnating. >> the numbers of blue collar jobs have recently grown the fastest rate many more than 31 years. so that's, you know, what we're talking about. they can talk all they want about socialism. all socialism is a method into the poor house. lou: and tonight we take a look at our booming economy under the president's leadership and ask the question, just who is it who's not better off than just over two years ago. who would risk our rising prosperity by voting for anyone other than president trump. the chair of the president's council of economic advisers, kevin hassett joins us here tonight. job creation, the growth of the economy, the president's achievements among the reasons why president trump is raising more money than any republican candidate in history. >> we're already starting to think about our next election. and it is moving along.
4:02 am
we're moving along very nicely. we've raised far more money than anybody. now we're in a much better position than we were because we've done so much. lou: and the president's agenda, his growing 2020 war chest, republican strategist ed rollins, pulitzer prize winning columnist michael goodwin and i will discuss the appeal of socialism in this booming economy. what is the appeal. and laguna beach, california, darwinism at work. some folks there say they can't bear the pain of seeing the american flag on those laguna beach cruisers. or they worry the american flag seems too aggressive, that perhaps illegal immigrants might be frightened by old glory on a cop car. we're joined tonight by a laguna resident. she'll tell us what all of this is really, really all about.
4:03 am
stay with us, laguna beach. we'll try to answer what in the world is happening in your fair city. and yes, in a few other places in this country as well. our top story tonight, what has president trump done for us lately. to hear alexandria ocasio-cortez and bernie sanders tell it, not enough. not nearly enough. and they're quite a pair. old socialist, young socialist and neither wants to talk about what's happening in venezuela and cuba while our economy roars. the president taking his message of economic growth and pos prosperity to minnesota. >> unemployment dropped to the lowest rate many for than 50 years. and you've heard me say it many many times. we've had the lowest rate in history for african-americans, lowest rate in history for hispanic americans, lowest rate in history for asian americans. and women are the lowest now in 65 years and soon i think that
4:04 am
will be in history too. it's really been amazing. lou: not satisfied with 65 years. the president wants that to be an all-time number. since the president was elected 4 mill yonl jobs have been created want record number of regulations have been eliminated. median household income has hit record levels and 4 million americans lifted off of food stamps. an unparalleled record. and joining us tonight, the president's point man on the economy, kevin hassett, chairman of the president's council of economic advisers which just released its annual economic report. and it is quite a compendium of great news for the nation. kevin were first of all, great to have you with us. >> great to be back. thanks, lou. lou: this president has a story for 2020 and for right now that's just, it's unparalleled, isn't it?
4:05 am
expwhr right. yo>> right.you know one of the t president trump looks forward to when he's taking the trips is getting briefed on the state of the economy in the state that he's going to. we prepare a briefing on the state that he's visiting. we were digging through the minnesota numbers. i don't want to spend the whole time on minnesota but think about this. remember the entrepreneurship was dead in 2016, people talking about the millennials being the least entrepreneurialship. applications for new businesses in minnesota are up since the president was elected by 18 mrs. when is the last time you saw applications for new businesses increase that much. we're in a boom that's unprecedented. i looked at the 2016 congressional budget office forecast for 2018. do you know what their monthly job number forecast was? 58,000 a month. open we got 206,000. so they said 58,000, we gave them 206,000. the differences, i think, is a
4:06 am
reasonable first-pass guesstimate of president trump's policies ldz it i. lou: it is also interesting to watch the way the business community -- i recall in the early days of the trump administration, within months people had joined jobs councils, various councils that the president assembled for ceos and business leaders and then within a few months we were watching people walk away from them. the president has done this without the cooperation of quote unquote big business. he's done it without a working partnership with the k street lobbyist, the chamber of commerce, the business round table, wall street can't bark orders at him. that turns out to be a boon i believe for this economy and for this president. >> or to think about it another way, as milton freeman taught us, the best way to have it is to get policy right and stand back and let it go.
4:07 am
when the government is working to make plans about this or that, invest in this form of artificial intelligence technology than that form, the government loses. i would rather have low taxes, be an attractive climate for competition and let the competition go. lou: how do you react to those who are saying that the president's tax cuts aren't as rewarding as they had expected them to be. people aren't getting -- as many people not getting refunds, not getting refunds as big as they expected? >> first of all, let's look at the numbers. just over 2018, reallies poseable income, the money that people get in their pockets after taxes went up by $2,300 per house hold, $2,300 per house holhousehold in person and a lof that is because of the tax cuts. i'm sure they can argue about whether the tax cuts are 80% of the story or 40% of the story. but the fact is that the policies have taken 58,000 jobs
4:08 am
per month economy and turned it into more than 200,000 dollars a month economy and they've done it in a way that's undisputable. and frankly if i were going to take a critic of the policies and ask them a question that i would really like to see the answer to, ask somebody who says it's not the tax cuts and not the deregulation. what was it? why we did we go from 58,000 a month to 206,000? was it just good luck? i've not seen a plausible story other than the one that we have. lou: frankly this president has put straightforwardly a pro-business attitude that the country hasn't seen frankly in decades. since reagan. >> right. and think about that, though, the thing is that you saw him mention blue collar jobs in the clip you were playing. the fact is he's not pro-business because he's in if
4:09 am
pocket of pro-business. he understands that prosperity for most americans who don't have fancy ivy league degrees is to have a good business in their town that invests in making them productive. the last thing is president trump focused -- we've got an event on wednesday about this. he focused on the distressed communities and that thing has taken off too. not only are businesses investing like crazy in the u.s., but they're investing more and more in the distressed communities that were crying out for help in 2016 when they voted for him. lou: within this, the sub text here is, in new york, home of wall street, even though wall street extends all the way around the globe in this day and age, and that is trades talks. we have a wag who always wants to say, you know, as soon as the trade tacks conclude, irrespective of what they say, things will get better. that's the nonsense mantra that is peddled by some in the
4:10 am
business press and others say so long as it's uncertain that will be deleterious to the economy. they can't explain two years of prosperity. they can't explain why suddenly the prospect of a balanced international trading system is the brightest of all prospects for the global economy. >> right. and as you know, over the years, there are times when you and i disagree. i got to say, you're a really tough question ner. er. i would invite anyone on the other side, i would love to watch you grill them. i really can't think of another story other than just random good luck. lou: yeah. and we know there's nothing random about leadership and setting the tone and the direction for this country to fulfill its destiny. and that is -- the president has made it clear from the beginning. he's about the forgotten man and woman and they are no longer forgotten. they are primary in our
4:11 am
government's policy. and that's a sweet wonderful thing. >> can i say one last thing, which is just that digging through the state level data as we do for the president. the lowest unemployment rates for the states are iowa and new hampshire. the two most booming states right now are iowa and new hampshire. i'm not sure i would want to sell socialism in those places right now. lou: you know you're going to be accused of a conspiracy. kevin hassett, great to talk with you. the historic notre dame cathedral in paris is little more than a shell tonight after a fire tore through the 13th century building. firefighter stopped the flames from burning down the cathedral's two tours. thetowers they wereunprepared af saving the building spire and roof. and it collapsed pan official cause yet to be determined. questions remain as to why no better plans were in place to
4:12 am
deal with the outbreak of a fire and to avoid such a tragic result. luckily, luckily providence be thanked, no one was killed in the fire. at st. patrick's cathedral in new york, you can't help but ask these questions, how prepared are we? a recent multimillion dollar restoration project included the inclusion of a high pressure water mist system in the attic of the building. the largest such system installed in any such building at the national cathedral in washington, d.c. 80% of that structure has sprinklers in place, a $3 million project will soon recover the remainder of the building. just to give you a sense of what's going on in this country and what i'm sure everyone wishes that notre dame had possessed. still ahead here tonight,

the radical left creates a senseless controversy in california. deeming a police department's use of the american flag, well, too aggressive. but up next, house speaker nancy pelosi speaking of aggressive, she says socialism isn't the view of her party. has she seen those, what is it, two dozen candidates? is it 30? i can't remember the number now running for president. how many of them are radical dimms. ed rollins, michael goodwin with us next. lou: socialist senator bernie

4:18 am
jobs rising at the fastest rate in more than three decades. despite senator sanders, well, self, i think, sel self-interesd ignoring of the facts, a new emerson poll shows him leading a crowded field of 2020 dimms. there it is. and it's not by much. and look at who's at number two. biden. what's going on. he was in the lead. what's happening? and there are more signs of dimms in disarray on cbs's "60 minutes last night, house speaker pelosi dismissed the outspoken radical socialists in her party. >> you have these wings, aoc and her group on one side. >.>> that's five people. >> progressive group. it's more than five. >> i'm a progressive. lou: joining us tonight, former
4:19 am
reagan white house political director ed rollins, new york post columnist and fox business contributor michael goodwin. and neither is a progressive. great to have you all here. rchtionchts>> thank you. lou: your reaction to nancy pelosi. she's the progressive. what are they, communist? >> her tactic at this point is to try to marginalize aoc and the others. i don't know that that's going to work. i don't think there's just five of them and they make a louder noise than they may have troops but noise is a lot of the game in politics. lou: especially these days. >> look. i think if you had a real functioning media in this country, we would be reading about the civil war in the democratic party. now of course that phrase is only reserved only for the republicans fighting each other. but there is a civil war in the democrat party. lou: is there a fight among the republicans?
4:20 am
i missed it. >> not anymore. but i'm saying historically that phrase is one the media reserves for the republicans. the democrats have a tussle. lou: and quite a tussle it is. i love watching her say what, that's like five people, these radical socialists. she's leaving out quite a few folks, i believe. >> there are 92 members to have progressive caucus and nancy has always been a san francisco liberal, which was a very bad word. lou: sounds like a rads call socialist to me. >> i've known her for a long time and she is a radical socialist. but the reality is that they can't use the term socialist on their own. we have to make people realize how ridiculous they are. and if you do medicare for all, we can't afford it and we can't take care of those set out to be for. i think she can make some good points. lou: it comes down to me, the fundamental question, i can't
4:21 am
imagine why this would not be as relevant in 2020 as it's been in every election. it is the economy stupid. and there's been nothing stupid at all about this administration and what it's doing with the economy. how do voters, no matter what resist the reality that this president has delivered on the economy. forgivforget foreign policy. on the economy this is unbelievable. >> the clip you showed of bernie sanders in pittsburgh of all places talking about the lie to the working people. in fact there are roughly 500,000 new manufacturing jobs under the trump administration. pennsylvania, of course, being a prime recipient of a lot of those jobs. and so for sanders to go out there and say that, i think it just falls on deaf ears for most people. they see their neighbors doing better, they're doing better, their children, a lot of people
4:22 am
are doing better. i think if you're going to go out there and say vote for me, not donald trump, you're going to have to come up with a better argument than that one. lou: part of the genius of the trump agenda, ed, that he campaigned on is he su subsumede democratic platform. he was the guy representing the interest of the forgotten man and woman in this country. he was the one talking -- he was the populist candidate open still would be against any one of these, what is it, 18 democrats that want to be. >> 19 as of today. the reality is he not only talked about it and took the issue away from them, he went on and implemented it. repealed all of the bad obama stuff, the executive orders that basically weighed down business. the economy is his great strength and he needs to talk about the economy every day, talk about the economy and the wall. two things that are very important and two things people
4:23 am
can't compete with him on. lou: bernie sanders, he's trying to catch up. he's surpassed joe biden at lease in that poll. biden doesn't seem to be holding what traction of course one poll it is. do you think biden is going to have significant trouble from here now with bernie sanders being so active? >> look, i have always doubted that joe biden would actually run. lou: right. >> i believe that this poll is another indication -- it's, as you say, a small one. he should be gaining ground, not losing ground so early. i just don't see how he ever prevails. i think his deficits are so well known on the campaign trail, i just didn't think he's electable. lou: who do you think is most lectable aelectable as the fieln the democratic candidates? >> nobody. it oohs no going to be boanders
4:24 am
anbernd and bernd and it'berniesanders and it's not ge biden. lou: are you saying that hillary is still alive in the bull pen? >> no. he's already tested with his message, the biden message. the old democrats get the establishment, get the labor unions, get all of those people on your side. that's not going to work in this new environment. lou: who is going to work? >> i think one of the younger candidates. no one is there yet. lou: so we're looking at 20. right there. you heard it from ed rollins. 20, 20 and 20. her maiherman kaine is going toe upset. up next, darwinism on display as the radical left and a few other people seem to be

that's our history but laguna has chaingsz. changed. but i really think there's something more behind this. there was a small contingency of vocal activists in our town that are far, far left left over from the days of the '60s. what's behind this is a visceral hatred, in my opinion, of president trump and anything that is indicative of president trump, including his obvious devotion to the flag and america. it's somehow seen as something that they must resist. and they actually have e-mails from people saying we must resist the mern flag in laguna beach, do away with it, put it down, doesn't represent us, doesn't represent our international community. yet we're all americans and all citizens in this city. lou: well, you would think. and the idea that there would be this concern that migrants are visitors, as one person said, would be 0 feppedde offended byt

the group that preaches to be tolerant has become intolerant of any voice that's conservative or god forbid you're a republican. but what we see, this is really heartening, we see a resurgence of conservative values in oish r town. and people are finally fed up and they're talking back. if you're attacking the american flag today, what's next? pledge of allegiance in schools? where does it stop? it's got to stop here. that's why people like me are taking a stand saying enough is enough. the american flag represents all. lou: good for you. because when i said this is nor winnian, it is -- we're going to decide this country's destiny i think over the next couple of years. >> i agree. lou: and people who take this kind of thing so seriously and somehow want to sub la mate deep seeded emotions that are really
