it is the president, right? and juan guaido says he might is ask the white house for military intervention to help oust brutal dictator nicolas maduro in socialist venezuela. this as russia says maduro has summoned putin for a meeting next month. trish regan prime time begins right now. ♪ ♪ trish: the president of the united states playing hardball with the chinese tonight, making good on his threat to raise tariffs to 25% on chinese goods coming to the united states of america. this comes on the heels of some 25% tariffs already being charged and could soon be followed by even more tariffs. got it, china? this fresh round of tariffs is being enacted on friday, this week, because according to u.s. negotiators the chinese reneged on promises that they had made to us. here we are negotiating in good

faith. they are not. so here's the deal, if china continues to play around like this, refusing to keep up its end of the bargain, then we engage in retaliation. we can make china's much harder economically. i promise you that, than they can make ours. we're their number one customer. number one customer having bought more than half a trillion of goods from them just in the last year alone. that's more than twice the amount they buy from us, so they need us. we support their economy. and the bottom line here is china needs us more than we need them. so if they intend to engage in economic warfare -- and that's exactly what they're doing -- then they should just remember right now, we win that fight. and tariffs are a weapon that the president tells me he's not afraid to use. okay, they're negotiating, and where does this go? do you think you're able to get them to stop stealing our

intellectual property? look, that's ours. >> sure. i mean, look, it's been -- it's a very major part of our deal -- trish: did you trade that, i mean, with tariffs? and i know i've got to let you go, because you've got a country to run -- >> i'm a person that believes in tariffs when somebody's trying to take advantage. i found these really great, very old laws that aren't been used in a long time. had i not had the power of tariffs -- and i could have signed it myself -- we wouldn't be having great deals. trish: tariffs are a weapon. i'll tell you, this is an example of a president doing exactly what a president should to do. he is looking to protect our economy. remember american businesses, they're not so incentivized to cut trade with china. why should they? they're too desperate trying to prove to shareholders that they're very active in that very important market. heck, they even surrender willingly their intellectual property to the chinese all

because they want the opportunity to access one billion people in that market. so this, this, folks, is where government must step in. i mean, i'm a small government live free or die kind of girl, but you need government, and you need them to protect us and protect our future and our children's future. we have all the leverage right now, all the economic leverage. we are still the biggest economy. but when you look at china's growth trajectory, we may not hold that space for long. so raising tariffs on china this friday, i say good, do it, and keep on raising them. joining me right now, former trump 2016 campaign manager, corey lewandowski. corey, good to see you. he's going through it. he told me last week this is, indeed, a weapon of his, and he understands, i would say, the economy much better than most presidents that we have had that come from more of a political

background or community organizing background. this is a president who understands that we're getting taken on china. but walk us through, if you would, his thoughts and why it's coming to this. >> well, trish, as you know, for a long time presidents have listened to wall street. and what those wall street executives were telling them was we have to continue to have trade with china, and it's okay if they take advantage of us. and, candidly, we've had stupid politicians negotiating on our behalf for way too long. this president is implementing policies that are very simple, they're called america first. and we can have a reciprocal trade deal which means if they have a 25% tariff on us, we'll have a 25% today writer on them. but what we will no longer be under this president is taken advantage of. we're the largest economy in the world. we have the opportunity to make sure that we have a level playing field. and what he said was if you don't come to the table fairly and negotiate open and honestly, then we're going to continue to

implement tariffs on your products. and from what i understand, secretary mnuchin and ambassador lighthizer were over there and had 90% of this deal done until the chinese, you wouldn't believe it, backed out on the deal. they steal our intellectual property, they don't give us access to their markets, and then they say, hey, we want more opportunity with the united states. that game is over. this president's putting america first. and if the chinese won't be fair to us, he's going to put those tariffs on them, and it's going to hurt them a lot more than us. trish: he's taken some pretty bold moves here that other presidents have been fearful to take in part because of the business community and the ceos that you referenced wanting to have this relationship with china because it means a lot to their bottom line. but sometimes, you know, a president has to do what a president has to do. steve bannon, whom you know well, sir, he just came out moments ago on lou dobbs' show praising this move. let's watch. >> trump understands that tariffs are more than taxes. they're about self-empowerment of the working class. today he said that president xi

and the chinese apparatus which continually, whether it's clinton, bush or obama, the permanent political class, they've tapped along, reneged on every deal they've had. trump said, i'm not going to do this. you not going to come back and retrade us. i'm going to hit you with the tariffs, and i think this is a very big week in economic history. trish: indeed, for the united states of america. you know, i look at the charts, corey, and i see all the growth that china has had over the last 20 years. it really started, i would say, significantly during the clinton years and then continued magnificently, shall we say, during the obama years to the point now where if we don't actually do something, they really will take over our spot economically. and you know what goes with economic success, it is military is seasoning success. so -- success. unless we all want to wake up speaking mandarin tomorrow, it's just the reality of the world. we need to preserve what we have, not allow it, corey, to be

stolen. >> trish, there's no question that is china's desire, to take over america, first, as the economic superpower of the world and then the military superpower of the world. that is their long-term goal. and too many presidents that came before this man allowed it to happen. and what he has said was not on my watch. and, look, you can not like the way that the conversation transpires sometimes, but look at our economy, the job growth, the numbers on the board. the new normal under barack obama was 1.3 and 1.4% job growth. this president is 3 + every time. six million new jobs since inauguration day. you don't see that over in china. you see it here because there's a level playing field, and that's what they need. yes, they are -- [inaudible conversations] trish: let me ask you this, because i think americans, actually, when you really push this question with them the, they would much rather buy american-made products, and they'd be willing to pay a little bit more for

american-made products. but nonetheless, one of the talking points of the democrats right now is trump can't do this because, you know what? all that stuff, that cheap stuff in walmart is going to start costing a lot more, and his base is going to be mad at him because they've got to pay more for their everyday goods. what do you say to that, corey? >> absolutely not true. americans can compete with anybody in the world if we have a level playing field, the clothing industry, steel, aluminum or anywhere else that we've been taken advantage of for too long. the president said give us the level playing field, and we'll compete. and our people here want to see americans working. there is nobody that's going to run on the policies of reversing the economic boom of the trump administration. nobody's going to run -- trish: joe biden might. you heard -- [laughter] do we have the sound? i've just got to play it really, really quick, because we have it. then we'll keep going. corey, listen to this. joe biden. >> i met virtually every major world leader in my role as vice

confirming what we suspected, that migrants heading for our southern border are exploiting legal loopholes in order to get in our country. border patrol agents in el paso, texas, say some migrants are recycling unrelated children all in an effort to appear as though they're a family when they're apprehended by u.s. authorities, and they pay these kids' families $200 for doing so. the incoming head of immigration, mark morgan, telling me right here on this very program that these kids are being used by coyotes and migrants. watch. >> right now, trish, it's so bad right now the system is so overwhelmed that the individuals coming across with a family, you grab a kid -- whether they're really your kid or you're renting them, which is happening -- and you come across illegally, you being allowed in now, and they're not even claiming asylum. they're not even claiming fear. they're just coming across. if you've got a kid, in a few

hours, you're allowed in our country never to be heard from again. trish: he knows what he's talking about, now he's got the big job. joining me now, pete hegseth. welcome back. >> thanks for having me, appreciate it. trish: i think it's too ez easy sometimes to lose sight to the tragedy that's happening to some of these children here, but mark morgan gets it. we have reports now that the doj is saying hundreds of dollars are being paid for each child. they're being recycled in some cases, so trotted across the border because our legal loopholes are that perverse. they actually incentivize people to exploit children in such a way as these poor kids? >> absolutely. it's education ployation, that's what it is. and this administration has asked for billions of extra funding to deal with this humanitarian crisis. the humanitarian crisis that finally even "the new york times" acknowledges is real. now, they would never support real solutions like a border wall and new policies that would actually disincentivize these

families from taking this dangerous trek. but ultimately, to hear from -- mark morgan's a great pick. he's going to take this seriously. he's going to understand the net we face. it's not just kids, it's diversionary tactics. they're using the cartels, the mexican military. and, you know, a report out today, we may talk about it even more, 40% of guatemalans, 40% of the country of guatemala is seeking to come to the united states of america. i have nothing against bat mall lands, i'm sure they're wonderful people. but if they don't want to come here legally, then we have an invasion on our hands we're not prepared to deal with if we don't no who they are or what they're bringing to this country. the president has taken this seriously. he's nominating serious people. congress has not been. but the recycling of children? if we're not cracking down on this with everything we have, including democrats, then we're being totally disingenuous on this topic. trish: you brought up that study that came out, and i thought that was quite telling. and i get it, right, like, who

wouldn't want to come to the united states of america? i thank god every single day that i was born in this great country with all the opportunity that i've had as an american. and it's hard, you're born in some other place, guatemala, mexico, honduras, ecuador, and, you know, your lot in life is obviously very different than the lot in life of an american. but unless we're going to say, okay, let's just embrace all of latin america and take on that responsibility and govern them, which would mean taking the over their countries, we can't say we're going to just open things up so everybody can come here because we have to have some kind of rule and order and some kind of tax system. otherwise you can't afford it, can you, pete? >> no, you can't. and you have democrat presidential candidates running effectively on the line of open borders. of no citizen is illegal. and that means a total breakdown of law and order is and of the nation-state. nations are defined by borders and their abilities to enforce them. we are welcoming people, folks from europe and across the

see the movie version to see if it's better. and that somehow that when you use the justice system for political theater, you get less justice. and somehow the democrats think that this is perfectly acceptable. now, keep in mind what nancy pelosi also has to deal with. if she's not keeping this investigation front and center and if she's not talking impeachment, then guess what? then you have the progressive caucus that wants to vote on medicare for all, that wants to vote for the green deal. and she has far bigger issues to deal with as she moves into 2020. because if the democrats are talking about things that are completely unpopular within the suburbs, they have no chance of keeping the house. trish: i hear ya. green deal's not so popular in the suburbs, medicare for all is not so popular, anything that would cause people economic challenges, but guess what else?
