♪ lou: good evening, everybody. president trump today working with lame duck british prime minister theresa may -- [inaudible] he is committed to preserving and strengthening the special relationship between the two countries. and in the midst of what was a second day of considerable pomp and pageantry, mr. trump made it clear to all that he intends to construct huge, lucrative trade deals between the united states and the u.k. >> our nations have more than $1 trillion invested in each other's economics. the united kingdom is america's largest foreign investor and our largest european export market.

that's a lot of importance. as the u.k. makes preparations to exit the european union, the united states is committed to a phenomenal trade deal between the u.s. and the u.k. there is tremendous potential in that trade deal. i'd say probably two or even three times what we're doing right now. lou: meanwhile, in washington, d.c. betrayal. the president is being assailed from all sides tonight. and make no mistake, president trump is fighting for the nation and our future. and tonight he is fighting alone. today president trump was under attack from not only the radical dems, the national left-wing media, but also the chamber of commerce and the powerful corporate lobby if -- in washington. they mean to block the president's tariffs against mexico unless mexico fights the

cartels and their criminal enterprises that depend on maintaining an open border and rampant illegal immigration and drug trade. the cartels and the lopez obrador government of mexico are as brazen as they are corrupt. mexico's foreign minister meeting today not with the state department or the secretary of state, but instead meeting with democratic house speaker nancy pelosi in washington, a breach of protocol but truly an insult the mexican government is likely to regret. president trump now faces a revolt in his own party led by the politically powerful chamber of horrors who fear greatly that the president's tariffs will succeed in stopping illegal immigration and result in secure, not open borders. president trump didn't mention mexico's slap to face of our secretary of state. >> i want to see security at our

border. i'm going to see great trade. i'm going to see a lot of things happening, and that is happening. and as you know, mexico called, they want to meet. they're going to meet on wednesday. secretary pompeo is going to be at the meeting along with a few others that are very good at this, and we are going to see if we can do something. but i think it's more likely that the tariffs go on, and we'll probably be talking during the time that the tariffs are on, and they're going to be paid. and if they don't step up and give us security for our nation -- look, millions of people are flowing through mexico. that's unacceptable. lou: it's unacceptable to most americans but not to majority leader in the senate, mitch mcconnell, and the republican conference of the u.s. senate. they, in fact, mean to block the president. we take up the latest on the fight to secure our southern border. former state department adviser christian whiton joins us and hope hicks today defied a white house request to not comply with

a subpoena from the radical left. this as house dems are singling out attorney general william barr and former white house counsel don mcgahn for civil contempt. tonight we're joined by ed rollins, harmeet dhillon and emily campagno. we'll be taking up the trail of the president by his own -- the betrayal of the president by his own party in the u.s. senate and what he faces in the way of challenges from the southern border and the government of mexico itself. while the entire leadership of the senate republican conference has obviously chosen to do the bidding of the chamber of commerce and the u.s. multi-nationals that the chamber represents, president trump is conducting the nation's business overseas. the president today ramping up his second day in london where he focused on policy, talking with outgoing prime minister theresa may, taking on a number of issues from trade to mexico to china. our edward lawrence is in london and has the story.

>> reporter: well, lou, president donald trump ended the night hosting a dinner with prime minister theresa may as well as prince charles and camilla. the president's children were also there. today the president made a lot of news from politics to mexican tariffs. the president covered a lot of ground in the news conference. the 10 downing street press secretary said the highest levels of government is being as ambitious as possible to get a deal with the u.s. the president wants to announce one in the dates following brexit. >> look, i think everything with the trade deal is on the table. when you're dealing in trade, everything's on the table. the united states is committed to a phenomenal trade deal between the u.s. and the u.k. there is tremendous potential in that trade deal. >> reporter: president trump also said that he has a good relationship with mexico, but he said the mexicans need to do their a part to stop the flow of illegal immigrants coming across our southern border. at one point the president said tariffs will go in in e on june

10th and then backtracked somewhat saying they will likely go into effect. he confirmed a meeting wednesday with secretary of state mike pompeo. finally, he addressed attacks on his character. >> he's a negative force, not a positive force. >> reporter: and london's mayor mocked president donald trump, the president -- [inaudible] there were larger protests here in london today, but the police had them confined to certain squares. back to you, lou. lou: edward lawrence in london. i've talked with a number of people today, all of them off the record, but i can tell you tonight i fear for the e public. the republican party is being led on, well, in the u.s. senate, on capitol hill by cowards. they don't represent the americans who sent them there. they represent the national interests. instead, they are clearly led by multi-nationalists, big business and wall street and the lobbies

that represent those multi-nationals and business interests. in fact, the senators are afraid the president will do exactly what he was voted in to do and what he set out to do; that is, to shut down illegal immigration and secure our southern border. to force mexico to stop the illegal immigration that the chamber of horrors desires for its members. the chamber's demands of the senate prove just how afraid big business really is of president trump as tonight he is on the verge of winning both the trade war and resolving the national emergency that he declared only four months ago. the republican party in the senate appears, to me, to be on the verge of committing absolute suicide. the tragedy is it may well take this great republic down with them. tonight president trump stands between them and the making of what will surely be a national disaster if these gop senators

in the senate have their way. joining us tonight, former reagan white house political director, leading republican strategist, fox business political analyst ed rollins. and, ed, it is good to have you here. >> thank you, lou. lou: we have been following this story through the day. what do you make of it? >> well, critical hours -- [inaudible] an extraordinary trip overseas, and the senate republicans are basically talking about joining democrats to block -- override a veto. the bottom line, this president has to be able to stand tough with mexico as he's been -- and all of a sudden you have a message coming out that's saying we may not support the president's tariff programs. that, to me, is the beginning of the end if they don't do that. lou: beginning of the end. tell us what you mean by that because, you know, when i say that i fear for the republic itself, this is a president who

is doing what is necessary to secure the nation's sovereignty, doing what is absolutely urgent and critically so to secure americans' safety. and for the republicans in the senate to turn their backs on this president and embrace, embrace tom donohue and the chamber of commerce as a their leaders just because the chamber bought them and paid for them, it's just, it is appalling. it is utterly dispiriting moment in our history. >> first of all, it would not be a senate majority if donald trump had not won and laid out the path -- [inaudible] he is the republican party today. he has an extraordinary -- across this country. at the end of the day, it's time for them to stand tough with him because he promised the country. the bottom line is the attention

of the mexicans and of the world that a strong leader -- [inaudible] lou: i want you and the audience to watch this, listen to so-called republicans in the u.s. senate revealing their true selves to nation and working against the interest of the nation, interest of the president and all of you who voted for him. >> and we are very concerned about the additional tariffs that have been proposed. >> well, there is not much support in my conference for tariffs, rest assured. >> we already voted once to disapprove the president on the issue of the national emergency at the border. he then vetoed that, and it was not overridden. why go through that again? if. lou: well, mr. president, it

would be to save the national interests and your sorry hide, frankly, senator. because that's what's at stake here. can you believe jodi ernst, a freshman if senator -- i mean, this is just an appalling display. >> and mcconnell, he basically needs to sit down with these guys and say, listen, we need this, this president is doing what he promised to do. we all promised we would do if we got elected. and it's time to ask the base to stand up and back him up. lou: do you believe i'm overstating it to say that the republic itself is at stake here? >> it's very vulnerable. the bottom line is it's very precarious. once you start -- [inaudible] that becomes a habit. the democrats -- lou: well, the republicans on capitol hill should be well practiced. let's just see how chuck schumer, the minority leader of the senate, is reacting to the

day's events in the perfidy of the gop. let's see a full screen. it is clear that lots of people in the administration didn't agree, and i believe that he will back off when faced with the opposition among business, among his own republicans. business. business, ed, business. the chamber of commerce threatening the president of the united states with lawsuits. the chamber of commerce financing a revolt in his own party. and, by the way, the sorry republicans in the senate remembered where they got their checks from, and they're doing tom donohue's bidding. i wonder, do you suppose the mexican foreign minister -- before meeting with the speaker of the house -- went over to talk to tom donohue about the border? >> could very well have. at the end of the day, this is the time for everybody to, basically, step up and support this president. this is a rate call, critical

lou: turns out joe biden's new $1.7 trillion climate plan has a bit of a carbon copy feel to it. an activist tweeting screen shots of biden's web site about making carbon capture, quote: a widely available, cost effective and rapidly scalable solution to meet mid century climate goals. that's word for word the same as the text on the carbon capture coalition's web site. back in 1987 vice presidential campaign ended after he was exposed for lifting quotes as a lawsuit and politician from figures such as robert f. kennedy. but, again, more similarities. we'll see what happens. rino senators selling out the security of the american people, threatening to block the president's tariffs on mexico. the president today served notice to would-be resis e dance

within -- resistance within his own party. >> and what do you think of republicans who say they may take action to block you -- >> i don't think they will do that. i think if they do, it's foolish. there's nothing more important than borders. i've had tremendous republican support. i have a 90% -- 94% approval rating as of this morning in the republican party. that's an all time record. lou: joining us tonight, christian christian whiton, former state department senior adviser in the trump and bush administrations. great to have you with us. christian, let's start with, first, the mexican foreign minister shows up at nancy pelosi's office instead of the secretary of state? what's, what could be more aggravating than that to trump white house? >> you know, yeah, this is not a great move. and this is something that china and canada did in their trade talks with us, especially before they gave in to president trump on nafta renegotiation.

the canadian foreign minister spent more time on capitol hill than talking to u.s. trade representative, bob lighthizer. now, the secretary of state, i believe, is traveling in europe, but the idea of approaching the president's opponents on capitol hill before candidly talking -- the president has extended an olive branch. he has said we could get to an agreement with mexico and listed three fairly simple things mexico could do. lou: as much of an insult as they've delivered here, his own party and mitch mcconnell are doing them far better in the way of an insult, actually threatening the president, the chamber of commerce, the principal business lobby in this country threatening him with lawsuits as he is dealing with a national emergency, and they have the arrogance and ignorance to actually threaten a sitting president with a lawsuit to stop his policies that he deems necessary to secure the national interest. and that group of senators,

republican senators, the republican conference in the senate betraying the president, and they mean, you can tell, they mean what they're saying. they're going to try everything they've got to block him. >> yeah. and i'm not sure that the vote count really is what they say it is. you have senator kramer from north dakota, you have senator tillis from north carolina, senator rubio from florida all either expressing support for the president or saying he clearly has the authority, which is what they're challenging. they're not saying necessarily this is bad policy. some are. some are saying he doesn't have the authority -- lou: christian, i have to say to you i have heard from those within that meeting, and what is being represented is, in point of fact, what was occurring. voices that would have been, you would think, speaking out, silent. and mitch mcconnell's conference obviously carrying the day.

they mean what they're saying. >> well, that's very disappointing -- lou: hell, yes, it's disappointing. >> and the reason this crisis exists is because when republicans controlled both houses of congress and could have, by using a budget resolution, essentially gotten anything through refused to fund the law. what president in the last half century hasn't gotten his number one priority through -- lou: you know the one who hasn't? paul ryan as his resident traitor in the speaker's office. that's who. and now he has mitch mcconnell following. i mean, it's as if they're -- the ghosts of mitt romney and paul ryan are walking the halls of the u.s. senate. >> you know, it's, again, the house is in play for 2020 or at least it could be if house republicans support the president and his broad agenda. if they latch on to the -- lou: what about the senate republicans? >> right. and also that's -- 53, that's a

a narrow margin. i think people are assuming you stay in about the same shape, but if you alienate the base which supports the president in excess of 90%, if you go against that, that is not a great -- people are more than willing to split their vote, to split their ticket. lou: well, i was asking you less the grassroots political question and more the question of governance. this is, to me -- and i want to get your reaction to it -- this is the senate conference committing suicide, the gop committing suicide. would you agree with that? >> if they follow through with this, yes. i think that they -- [laughter] they will not be in a good position going into 2020. i hope they come to their senses. you know, i think that the texas delegation is getting a lot of complaints from some businesses in the chamber of -- lou: who is? sorry. >> the texas delegation. lou: the texas delegation? every delegation. i have talked with people who have changed their positions,

various sources in all kinds of -- in several walks of life who have changed their positions in 24 hours, for crying out loud. we are watching this business lobby in this country bring our government to its knees at least as it's represent by the republican conference in the u.s. senate. s it is the disgusting. it's appalling. and it is an existential threat, i would think. would you agree? >> to, certainly to republican majority. yeah, i don't know what they're doing. it's not even good negotiating. i mean, just even if you're upset with this, stick with the president. but we're talking 5% here. are we really that dependent on mexico? we need to have another conversation about that if that's the case. lou: they obviously lack integrity, but they also are equally deficient in intellect. christian, good to have you with us. christian whiton, as always,

lou: president trump in london today delivering this stern warning to mexico: >> mexico shouldn't allow millions of people to try and enter our country, and they could stop it very quickly. and i think they will. and if they won't, we're going to put tariffs on. i don't want to hear that mexico is run by the cartels and the drug lords and the coyotes. i don't want to hear about that. a lot of people are saying that. mexico has something to prove. but i don't want to hear that they're run by the cartels. mexico should step up and stop this onslaught, this invasion into our country. lou: and the acting i.c.e.

here? in well, the fact is i said this when i was in the white house. i've said it since i've left. donald trump became president despite the gop, not thanks to gop. what is to be done? the president is the arch communicator. in one tweet, in one press conference he does more to accomplish the messaging that the gop should have been doing for 20 years. so he'd have to send a very simple message. you, through your actions, are going to demonstrate whether you are for the american people and for the safety of all americans in this country. if not, then you're sending a clear message, and you will pay the price, mitch mcconnell, or your colleagues in 2020. he has to send a shot across the bow of the gop. lou: we can't wait until 2020 for an accounting. this is, i truly believe, an

trump advisory council. ed rollins back with us, and it's great to have you both here. harmeet, let me begin with you. can you -- your reaction to what is an obvious effort to undercut the president, to subvert his policies just as it's clear that the chamber is scared to death that he is going to succeed in securing that border and stopping illegal immigration with the assistance, the forced assistance but the assistance, of the mexican government. your thoughts. >> well, it is disappointing, not surprising, lou. i mean, from the point of view of tariffs, it seems to me like mexico has been taxing the united states with tariffs for many years now, because all of those remittances who come from the workers who are taking american jobs -- lou: $30-$40 billion a year. >> absolutely. and so it is fair for the president to flex his muscles and protect the american worker, protect the american economy and do this. it is sad to see so many republicans bought and paid for by big business talking that

talk that this is bad for the economy. look, it's not something we want to go on, from but it is a tool that's very important, and i'm glad to see it. lou: and, ed, as harmeet suggests, this is the president who's responsible for the prosperity that kicked in for all americans. and we've got these lame brain u.s. senators who have never done anything in their lives -- and, by the way, haven't done much, if anything, as senators -- suddenly wanting to tell him how an economy works, how foreign policy works? this man has accomplished in two and a half years than they have in over 30 years, many of them, in the u.s. senate and congress. >> the issue here though is about the president's strength. the president has to be strong on this, and he will be. and the republicans have to back him. if they don't back him, the rnc types have got to put pressure

on them. the next 48 hours are critical, but the democrats are going to be enhanced, they're going to continue to do everything they can to take this president down. lou: you're seeing jodi ernst, mitch mcconnell and john barrasso, that's the leadership team. and behind them, i mean, you're looking at -- look at the grin on their little faces. i have never seen such minuscule political figures on capitol hill in my career as are represented in the those images you're looking at right now. harmeet, your thoughts? >> well, i agree, lou. it's very disace pointing. and i think the senators seem to be acting more in their own self-interests in terms of getting reelected and their donors than what the constituents who put them into office care about. american workers care about this issue, american taxpayers care about this issue, and i'm glad to see that the president is standing firm. i hope he does that. the other bad thing about this

is seeing the party members attack the president when he's abroad conveying the -- lou: they're cowards. they're cowards. >> it's very unfortunate. lou: if those people -- can we put that picture up again? i just -- could we, please? of the leadership of the conference in the senate? i mean, if, you know, if brains and principle were gun powder, there wouldn't be a firecracker amongst the whole bunch. i mean, it is appalling, what they have done. >> every one of them are very marginal to begin with. everyone will have a tough re-election under the best circumstances, and this party and this country, the strength of this country is up to this president. lou: right. >> they've basically got to support -- there are certain times you've got to bite the bullet and support the president no matter what your personal views may be, and he happens to be right on the issue, and they should be right behind him. lou: harmeet, go ahead, please. >> there continues to be a war

on the conservative side between the establishment folks, some of whom are in the white house, and the american patriots. and many of us in the rnc are very loyal to president, most of us are very patriotic and concerned about america's future. i don't want to tar all republicans with the brush of not being -- lou: i'm talking about republicans who are attacking him, subverting him and prepared -- [inaudible conversations] and the republicans who owe their seats to him who have stood silently through this day. it is horrible. i just want to put up the numbers that we're looking at in 2020, if we may, in the senate. we're looking at republican seats, 22 up, 12 up for the democrats. that doesn't look good for the republicans just in mathematical terms. >> well, the reality here is if they don't -- you know, they all talk about the things they do. the bottom line is they haven't done anything on the immigration front, and the senate can start some things, do some things, and

lou: this is, i think, one of the darkest moments that i have seen in our capitol for a long time. this is an abject betrayal on the part of mitch mcconnell, the leadership that we have shared with our audience -- and i apologize for the images that you see as a result. it is an absolute shame, it is appalling that the president of the united states has to put up with such lille puces as the republican leadership of the gop conference in the senate. >> the problem i see, too, is this makes our party no better than the left, the democratic party right now is divisive on a multitude of levels. lou: right. >> what we had up until now was a semblance of unity at some point which, obviously, now is being subverted. and i think it's not only undermining the president's authority, but also the electorate. it's undermining the voters.

you put anymore office -- lou: absolutely. they're telling every american who voted for this president, go to hell. we do not care. we have a cure in the senate, and we will exhaust it before we grow a spine, acquire a principle or certainly a dollop of courage. >> prior administrations, they have been continuing to fail at diplomacy with mexico and southern countries in terms of stymying the cartels' growing influence down there and the resulting push factor is that push, hundreds of thousands, millions of immigrants over our borders that have permeated our entire state. if those congressmen and senators cared about the factors, you would think that they would be onboard with this kind of creative and novel way to deal with it. but instead -- lou: an effective way. i believe we're watching the chamber of commerce, and i think, again, can we show the leadership of the u.s. senate

gop conference? because this is -- a picture says i don't know how many words, 10,000? 20,000? if this is an endless book we're looking at, because it is -- they are reprehensible in what they're doing. their families have to understand what traitors they are to their conference, to their party and to country. this president, i think it couldn't be clearer, but the chamber of commerce and the most powerful business lobby in all the world comes together to stop tariffs on mexico. and for the purpose of securing the border, stopping illegal immigration. it's got to be clear why it's important for those senators to stand up for this president, the only one who's done anything to even slow illegal immigration. >> and i think that resistance, it also oversimplifies the problem and also the economics

of it, which is that there's -- and it also models inappropriately a kind of refusal to even negotiate with the president or to have some type of discussion and support him and say -- lou: and to do it while he's in london, overseas. >> quite transparent. lou: it's -- and you make a terrific point. this is the rino republican establishment in the senate aligning and allying itself with the radical dems of the house. now, that is a hell of a combination, isn't it? the american people -- we're witnessing something that has never, ever occurred in this country before, and it is -- jerrold nadler talks about constitutional crises? this is a crisis of conscience, of soul for the country. and if these, these haggard, tired leaders of the republican party on capitol hill sell out this president, it's going to
