was intentional. it could have been someone who is loose and stupid. we'll be able to report back and you will understand exactly what happened. but it was a very foolish move. trish: it's very clear the president wants definitive answers as to why this happened, where it happened as the world remains on edge in anticipation of military action. joining me right now, house armed services commander michael walsh. what's your sense of what happened? >> the drone was in under national waters. i spoke to a number of members at the briefing today, and the administration sent folks over to congress for smaller briefings. the drone was in international waters. if you understand how the iranian hierarchy occurs, you don't have rogue elements and you don't have them using the

type of sophisticated air defense that was needed to take this down. trish: the president was offering them an opportunities. they doubled down and said we absolutely shot it down. >> he offered them an off-ram. they took responsibility and now we have to deal with them. they are emboldened by perceived weakness. we have seen that in the past in the obama administration and they are deterred by strength. trish: what would that strength be? >> it needs to be proportional. it does not look like hundreds of thousands of u.s. troops on the ground. we are not talking invasion. and i don't think we are talking strikes on the iranian mainland. you can look at taking down sought boats they use to attack tankers. you can look at what we did in the 1980s which is take out

some of their oil platforms offshore but will accompany and reinforce what we are doing in terms much smoking off its oil export. there are things we can do that will show a tougher response but that escalate. trish: we say the drone was in international waters. it was 21 miles off the iranian coast in international waters. however, let me show you the map that was sent to me by the iranian mission to the u.n. this is their map and they are saying it was 8 miles off the coast which puts it in their range. as a result of that they had to shoot it down. can you ever get to the bottom of this? >> i will trust our intelligence community any day.

the iranians have a history of deception from hezbollah to hamas and terrorist organizations all over the gulf. trish: it seems like it's not a smart move. >> it's very clear why they would do it. the maximum pressure campaign is work and the history of iranian responses drug the 1980s and 2000 is to create an external crisis. their people are literally rioting on the streets because of economic hardship, and it drives a wedge with the international community. what they are trying do is cry eight a mayor -- create a narrative that everything was fine until we withdrew from the iran deal and president trump was the one who started this crisis. many democrats are buying into that narrative and it's a bunch of garbage.

trish: i get it that the president doesn't take going to war lightly. go ahead, congressman. someone of the things i'm encouraging the administration to do is to shift the narrative that this was a white house response to a request for forces, i'm talking about the carrier and troops. a request for forces from the military and commander in the field to defend our assets. that's what happened. this isn't war mongering on the part of the white house. the president has been very clear he wants to maintain pressure to get iran back to the negotiating table to get the pieces iran missed. it's support for terrorism and holding american hostages as we speak. there are american citizens chained to an iranian prison. so the neetion that they were a

responsible actor during the iran deal is false. trish: they said we had a deal. you signed a contract. it's hard to tear up that contract and move forward so easily. i think if they were smart they would say let's sit down at the table with the president of the united states and work together to get a decent deal for everyone that everyone can feel more positive about. but they are not taking that opportunity. >> that would in the best interest of the iranian people, but not necessarily in the interest of the regime. my concern is we go to talks too soon, that economic pressure campaign is working. oil exports from iran are plunging. the inflation is out of control. there is up rest in the rights. and we need to not sit down at the table until we have maximum leverage. but there is a diplomatic

solution, i agree. trish: absent that diplomatic solution which i hope is in the card, i think this is a good opportunity for everybody to sit down and have a rational conversation. >> i don't think it's impossible. i just think the timing of it. the iranians are lark out because the economic pressure campaign is work. they are desperate. the reason they sat down in 2012 with the obama administration is because the sanctions campaign was finally working then. but president obama let them off the hook with a bad deal. trish: they shoot down our drone, what else our response? >> i think it's proportionate. it takes down some of their naval assets and air defense assets. but we don't go deep into the heart of the iranian heartland and we don't put boots on the

message that everything they are doing is okay. but this is why you don't want to take anything off the table. this pressure campaign with sanctions, all that is hurting the iranian regime and that's good. you want to continue to do this. if the iranians escalate this, all it will do is push our allies and partners. so just continue to stay the course, let the iranians know any attack against americans overseas, against an american ship could respond and cause the united states to respond by taking out the iranian navy ship. trish: what is this about? why do you shoot down a drone unless you want to engage in this negative back and forth. >> they are trying to antagonize the united states that would

cause the united states to flip from oural highs and make it look like the united states is moving toward an aggressive posture against the iranian regime. i think the president has the right approach. we don't want the iranians to threaten to close the strait of hormuz. and of course you know if it hits one of our allies oral highed takers we can't abide by that. we need to communicate we are not going to accept this. the iranians are still in a box and have no good options before them. trish: the ambassador called it economic terrorism. which is a strange term to use. but you can see that they really don't like it. i guess what i hate about this is it escalates into strikes

administration might be thinking about this right now. >> i watched a lot of the response today between lindsey graham, kevin mccarthy and some of the comments the president made while meeting with prime minister trudeau. you can't let something like this go unanswered. you cannot shoot down and u.s. asset in international waters and think the u.s. is going to allow it to happen especially after iran did this to the japanese tankers. but at the same time i think we recognize where we are headed with this. i think lindsey graham' said. i would never test his president's -- this president's resolve when it comes to his resolve and ability to act in america's best interest. iran has had notice. if i were them, i would try to walk this back.
