liz: jaw dropping destruction. it's head to georgia and the carolinas. steve harrigan is in the bahamas with more. >> here in nasa we have been watching rescue helicopters coming one after the other. they rescued at least 60 people. that was just by the early morning hours, and they plan to go at it around the clock. people have been waiting four hours. hoping someone who gets off those helicopters will be a missing relative. we have seen a couple joyful

reunions, finding relatives they weren't sure were dead or alive. here is one woman's story. the rescues have been complicated by a number of factors. 35 inches of rain fell in the northern parts of the bahamas. so the main runway in freeport is devastated. the prime minister announced the preliminary death toll is 7. but as the rescue crews get out there, that number is expected to change dramatically the next couple days. hurricane dorian's outer band lashing the southeast. it's barreling up the florida coast. it's still a category 2 storm. 110-mile-per-hour sustained wind. it's expected to reach savannah,

georgia. with me is the mayor of savannah, georgia. first we'll go to mike tobin in savannah. then we'll bring in the mayor. reporter: what we are seeing as the outer band pass through, you will get the wind and the rain to increase. we have reports of gusts reaching up to 70 miles an hour closer to the beach. then it subside as the band passes. the eye of the hurricane is about 100 miles south-southeast of where we are now. the big issue should come in the middle of the night. at 1:30 in the morning, it should be high tide. so it will bring water up quite a bit. by all likelihood the roads that connect the mainland with the barrier island, those should be under water. the people who elected to ride
