is unreal to me. >> i think that's fair. >> i have always known what state i'm in at all times. i had no idea that was a reason to break but here we are. >> good night from new york, new york. we will see you tomorrow. >> we have breaking news tonight, hurricane dorian now blasting north carolina at is a category two storm continues to creep up the coast. the 110 miles per hour winds are not the only danger. there is also heavy flooding. a major storm surge and now, tornadoes as well. this is a live look at north beach in north carolina which is directly in the path of the storm. as you can see dorian is just east of myrtle beach. that is expected to continue to travel northeast on a collision course with the outer banks. right now doug is in wilmington. doug. >> good evening, kennedy. as of 8:00 p.m. this evening in
9:01 pm
wilmington, north carolina the conditions began to deteriorate. we have seen relatively mild conditions virtually all day long, not to say there is no danger here. the storm did spawn of some tornadoes as early as 6:00 a.m. today. some of those smaller tornadoes are snapping off trees, tree limbs and uprooting trees but no major damage beyond that. again as of 8:00 p.m. tonight with the storm still about 70 miles directly to the south the wind speeds have begun to pick up. although it is sporadic, it lulls into a period of relative calmness and then picks up to what i would say is 40, maybe 5. it's expected to get much worse than that. upwards of a million people have been evacuated from barrier islands in north and south carolina. city officials here are still warning residents that speeds could get up to 105 miles per hour. we are on the night shift, we'll be here all night long waiting until the high tide here at 4:5. we'll be watching. hope you will be too.
9:02 pm
back to you. >> we will be watching all night long. thank you so much. in many areas the damage is already done. this is video of emerald isle north carolina. houses have been absolutely shredded similar to what we have seen out of the bahamas. we are told 200,000 homes without power in this state. take a look at this funnel cloud. we are told more tornadoes could continue to pop up all night and in some case many miles inland. a historic charleston trees are down, streets are flooded and the power is out in some places. but the video of the day of course is for myrtle beach. somebody drove a jeep onto the sand and hit the waves took care of the rest. in all seriousness, the danger is far from over. this is still a monster storm and there will be many risks after dorian blows away.
9:03 pm
coming up doctor has more on the threat of disease both in the u.s. and bahamas. first of joining me by phone for myrtle beach, south carolina is the mayor. mayor, welcome. >> hi, kennedy, how are you? >> you have a lot to deal with, not only the storm itself, the wind, the rain, the storm surge, but now it tornadoes. how on earth are you preparing? two we feel like we have been prepared days in advance and that is a good thing. storms like this we are lucky enough to have advance notice. but, we were not prepared for the tornadoes. that actually was a surprise and not a very welcome one. kennedy: what is that a result of? >> hurricanes. mother nature. and these storms are so unpredictable and every time we get one we hear the predictions of what it is going to bring. it is always different, but we have to expect that.
9:04 pm
we have to be prepared for whatever comes with them. i think that our city, our crews did a great job preparing the city for this one. kennedy: do you think residents are weatherworn considering some of the storms you have had in the last year? or are they heating warnings more so than before? >> i think it is a little of both. last year with hurricane florence we had so much flooding surrounding myrtle beach and that was something very different that we have never really dealt with before to that magnitude. this storm, i think people because governor mcmaster called for only those evacuations that perhaps some people did not take it as seriously. but, a category two hurricane is not a force to be reckoned with and can cause major, major damage. we feel that we were very, very lucky with dorian and not as
9:05 pm
lucky as some others have been. and, when i look at the bahamas and the total devastation there, we are just so grateful that we don't have those conditions here and just pray for them and we are ready to get myrtle beach back up and running, welcome our visitors back, but to also do what we can to help those who have been more greatly affected than we are. kennedy: i saw a man in florida who bought 100 generators to send to the bahamas. this is a crazy storm. it is so unpredictable. it is doing things that when you have a category five storm that stalls over islands like it did in the bahamas, it is really devastating. we are thinking of you and of course all of the people in your region. these are certainly the most challenging times for public officials like yourself. hopefully if you don't get sleep you have good coffee. >> thank you. and thank you for all you are doing as well. kennedy: thank you, so much.
9:06 pm
earlier today, historic charleston, south carolina got hit hard. right now, their biggest issue is flooding. jeff locke is in charleston with the latest. jeff. >> kennedy, much of charleston, south carolina pretty much like i am, pretty wet. after a days worth of rain and pounding. i tell you, the cleanup already beginning to see the vehicle stranded in the middle of the street here. but they have already brought in the pumps. perhaps you can hear them. already pumping the water out. this is what they call the low country. partly because it is very low here and they are prone to flooding. so when you get a category three storm sitting offshore pounding it with rain, they are even more prone to flooding. but already trying to clean that up. most of the problem associated with this in charleston has been water. not so much the wind, although i show you a picture of saint james islands. this is that the church there called the holy city church.
9:07 pm
unfortunately they lost a roof. one of the most serious pieces of windy damage i have seen. other than trees down and power lines down. that is the other key. at one point more than 200,000 people without power, that restoration kicking into high gear i think tomorrow. once the wind we are getting now not real strong winds but guys don't want to go up in the bucket trucks understandably when there is any kind of wind and rain coming down. certainly could have been worse. you can still see perhaps it is still blowing. i think they dodged one here. kennedy: thank goodness. thoughts with everyone there. stay safe. it is so bright there. while dorian continues to batter the carolina coast the bahamas already dealing with the aftermath. at least 23 people now reported dead. the prime minister said the affected islands are facing a
9:08 pm
generational devastation. the damage estimated to be between seven and $10 billion. the humanitarian -- says about 70000 people are in immediate need of lifesaving assistance. rescue efforts are underway but dorian victims in the bahamas and u.s. will still be faced with post- storm dangers like a lack of food and water, contamination and disease. here with me now the studio to explain how they can day safe is host of the dr. drew podcast. internist and -- doctor drew. this is crazy. we are so transfixed because whether so unpredictable. but, sadly you can predict what happens in the aftermath. >> yes. either you are asking about the tornadoes, my understanding is the most serious damage are those that's pollen from the hurricanes. in the images we have just seen, the aftermath is what people have to be prepared for. my experience has been that
