center for psychedelic research at john hopkins. >> glad to be here. >> this is such a fascinating field. it's tragic that for decades, this research has been stifled by drug hysteria. obviously you are not encouraging people to go out and take these substances on their own but what is it about psychedelics that works so profoundly on the brain? how are they different than traditional forms of treatment like antidepressant drugs? >> wildly different. they are a unique class of drugs ended up themselves when given under conditions in which volunteers are carefully screened, prepared and supported, paintable and up having deeply meaningful expenses that they later rate

among the most personally meaningful of their lives. so much so that they, with a shifted sense of self and worldview and self-efficacy that they have not had before. it appears that this is incredibly therapeutic across a range of diseased states or psychiatric conditions. >> are these long-term? i can imagine someone watching this right now, who has struggled with depression thinking, i've tried everything and nothing has worked but i read tom's book and some of the people he profiled and followed in the book and from what i have read, these are long-term effects. is that true? >> it is. the effects of these drugs are relatively short acting.

attitudes and moods and behavior that appear positive and some of our trials indicate these effects endure six months -- a year or more. in some cases, we have participants that go years later, and there's not been a recurrence. >> we haven't seen that type of efficiency and other forms of treatment for things like ptsd, it's gotta be fascinating to try to figure out how this works because from what i understand, there's a context given. a person sees their life and psyche from a different pointmac of view and when you have a clinician who is administering a certain controlled dose in a setting where the person is able to open up and feel safe, how does that work?
