meet with the vice premiere tomorrow. it's unclear how much progress was made today. but leaving the talks today treasury secretary steven mnuchin seemed pleased. president trump had high praise portray gowd -- praise portray y gowdy. lou: turkish forces surrounded two cities inside the syrian border. forcing more than 60,000 people to flee the area. erdogan is threatening to send 3.6 million syrian refugees into europe if the european union continues to call turkey's

incursion into syria an invasion. they have had a deal to prevent refugees from entering european nations in exchange for financial assistance to help care for this to refugees. joining us, robert o'brien. as the saying goes, you are hitting the ground running and everything is moving quickly around you. let's start with syria. the turkish government obviously has insisted on a major military operation and are carrying it out. what do you see and what is the view from the white house. >> it's great to be here with you and talk with you again. look, we made this clear to president erdogan early on that the invasion of syria was a bad idea.

we did not endorse the military operation. we are not involved in the military operation. and i don't think this is going to go well in the long run for the turks. the president made that clear. we don't have troops in the area so there is no safety issue for american soldiers. but it's something we are watching and man twoarg great concern. lou: nato, some surprise i would assume amongst our ally in nato as well. >> i don't think this military operation turkey launched has been greeted with any sort of support anywhere in europe among turkey's nato allies. other members of nato. the president made clear where we stand, and if there are a up in of things we are watching closely. that is civilians and how they are impacted by this military

operation. we don't want to see a humanitarian disaster. we had a victory against the caliphate and we don't want to see that rolled back. we are concerned about the situation and watching it closely. lou: the ability, the president talking about economic sanctions and speaking very forthrightly as is his custom. he means obviously business when he told erdogan, keep our agreement, particularly vis-a-vis the kurds or there will be disastrous cobbss for the turkish economy. >> i think we saw that the last time there was a run-in with turkey relating to pastor andrew brunson. when the president put in place the tariffs the turkish lire took a real hit. i think erdogan knows president trump means business.

if the turks don't meet their commitments and this operation continues, there is a good chance there will be economic sanctions. we'll have to wait and see as the president said. one of the things the president said this afternoon, the turks are aware of this. the kurdish leaders are aware of this. the president made the united states available and the good offices of the united states available to mediate to bring this to you a swift conclusion and restore peace to the area. as the president says, we'll have to see how the turks respond. the kurd would like us to be involved in mediating a resolution. we'll see what happens with turkey. lou: that would be in the great american tradition in line with our history as a nation more so than adventurous militarily

policies that have been followed. you are also changing the office of national security advisor considerably, a huge staff in the white house to provide national security council to the president. give us your view about how you want to reorient it and wait will look like in the weeks and months ahead. >> we just had a great town hall meeting with all the staffers at the nfc. they are a dnsc. they are a fine group of people from the military to the state department. they work tirelessly on behalf of the president and the american people. over the years, the job of the nsc is to coordinate policy to get the best opposites for the president of the united states and present those options to

him. during the last administration the number of staffers, policy staffers at the nsc ballooned to over 200. i saw the results of that. i told our folks we want to get back to the level of staff we had during the first bush administration when condoleezza rice was the national security advisor. that was about 100 staffers. and that was with two wars going on with iraq and afghanistan. it ballooned into a massive bureaucracy or at the white house under the last administration. we want to bring it back to historic levels. we think we can be more efficient and better serve the president with a streamlined organization. lou: all that the function of great leadership. we thank you for doing so. robertio brian, thank you very much. >> thank you, i love being here

nothing but ideological propaganda? >> i'm afraid a lot of it has. certainly the big gray lady. the "new york times" and the "washington post" have become tools of different factions in the democratic party. we have few independent journalists left like cheryl atkinson and yourself and sara carter who are willing to dig for the stories and find the truth. and gregg jarrett. but most of of the mainstream media is part of the problem. lou: it's stunning that we are once again with this president having to contend with a full-on assault from one of the two great political parties. there is just no explanation for it other than banal political

corruption. >> they planned this from before he became president. it's part of the insurance policy, part of the mueller investigation to hand off to the shah raised an impeachment inquiry. they are not following the law. they changed the rules to facilitate it. and they did that before this session of congress. it's all more of the same and it's all a big lie. >> whenever there is a republican interest associate or contact, it seems like justice moves quickly as compared to when it's a democrat. to think that these two folks who are are contacts of rudy giuliani calling them associates as the national left-wing media did that may be quite a stretch,

but we'll see. but to see subpoenas and violations of election laws in the million dollar bonds established by the judge, this is rather quick justice. i thought the days of swift justice were over in this country. >> only for republican targets which it looks like these people were. we have abject documented pay-to-play of foreign money into the clinton foundation. but no indictment in sight fortney of that. not to mention the incredible irs violations there and other problems with the whole scenario. but let it be two people associated in any way with rudy giuliani and ukraine and all of a sudden there is an indictment out of the southern district of new york which james comey's daughter is a prosecutor there. lou: imagine that connection.

two terms i am sure he would have had a more color phil answer. >> his response was china is a nation we want to do a trade deal with. it's been a battle the last month. they had a draft agreement in may, the chinese rejected it because it would have codified all of their illicit activities. >> the fact is, we have a country stealing from us every day, ripping the wealth of this country from the trade relationship, from the technology that we create and plan. this can't go on. and to talk about trade whether it's soybeans, advanced technology, or whether it is, you know, intellectual property and forced transfers, this is the stuff which is the foundation of our national security, which this president

articulated time and time again as no other president before him saw fit to do. >> the chinese are steeped in deception. you are not negotiating with a normal nation like germany or france. it is a dictatorship with ulterior motives which is to diminish the united states to seek global supremacy. i think president trump understands that. when i interviewed secretary pompeo for the book, i said how can you trust the chinese to abide by the agreement? they haven't come blood any agreement they have made. lou: in may they just threw it aside. >> the south china sea where they promised not to militarize islands, they militarized islands. he said what the administration

is going to do is seek ways to find verification elements in their deal. that will be a difficult thing to do. how do you verify? trust and verify. also what happens if and when they violate. lou: there is within his country something of an unregistered foreign agents of china. none other than the chamber of commerce. and the head of international affairs there saying this about whether there would be an agreement that would stop the tariff increase scheduled for the 15th, next week. saying this. i'm not here to suggest we are going to have a grand slam in the u.s.-china relationship this week, but we are going to make progress. i found that offensive, as if the chamber decided what's going
