♪ ♪ elizabeth: welcome back. a career state department official overseeing ukraine policy told congressional investigators this week he had raised the alarms early in 2015 during the obama administration about hunter biden serving on

the board of a ukrainian natural gas company. catherine herridge with the story. >> reporter: liz, career diplomat george tent gave a closed door deposition on tuesday. two sources familiar with the session say he testified that he was so concerned about hunter biden's board position that he flagged those concerns in early 2015 to bidening's office, but the issue went nowhere. kent, a senior state department official, told congressional investigators that he believes hunter biden's board position with the energy firm sent the wrong message. when the obama administration at the same time urged ukraine to avoid conflicts of interest. and kent went further saying ukrainian officials would probably conclude that working through hunter biden would gain favor with then-vice president joe biden, his influential father. today president trump called the testimony harsh. >> he excoriated, from what they reported on the news -- and, of

course, maybe in this case it won't be fake news -- but he excoriated the obama administration and joe biden and joe biden's son saying that his tremendous problems, tremendous problems with joe biden's son and the ukraine. so he's got tremendous problems with biden's son and ukraine, and it's inappropriate and all of the horrible things. >> reporter: fox news also confirmed that former special envoy to the ukraine chris volcker told investigators that, but -- burisma was notorious for corruption. he said the firm was, quote, looking to spruce up its image by having prominent-named people on its board. today the biden campaign responded to the kent testimony. quote: donald trump's unprecedentedly corrupt administration is melting down because of the scandal he touched off by trying to get ukraine to lie about joe biden. on joe biden's watch, the u.s.

made rad candidating corruption a centerpiece of our policies towards ukraine. earlier this week hunter biden told abc news he had done nothing illegal when he sat on those boards. liz? elizabeth: reuters now reporting hunter biden never worked on company business in ukraine during the fife years -- five years he served on that natural gas company board in the ukraine. remember, i he got paid $3 million. it didn't protect the company from a series of criminal investigations launched by ukrainian authorities against the company's owner. let's bring in former fbi deputy assistant director danny coulson. there's a lot of rhetoric flying around the story, let's break it down. it looked like, according to the evidence, that this nat gas company in ukraine brought hunter biden onboard, paid him $3 million. he never showed up to do business in the ukraine, according to reuters. it was down to look like it was going to inoculate the company

to have hunter biden on the board. your reaction? >> i don't see. that for the first place, i don't know that he brings a lot of credibility to anything with his track record. so putting him on the board to help your image -- elizabeth: but the connection to joe biden. forgive me, go ahead. >> yes, ma'am, understand that. he was put on there because he was the son of the vice president of the united states, and he was the lead man for obama in the ukraine. this -- it goes more than violating the look-bad rule. and i have one significant question. if the inspector general was so concerned about his position on that board, why didn't he conduct an investigation? that's his job to do that. and if it gets to the point where you have a scintilla of evidence about some kind of criminality, then you refer it to a proper jurisdiction which would be doj to start investigating it. but one of the things that really bothers me, there's some reporting today about he did some good work over there and he did some legal work. well, where's the work product?

he wasn't there, so there's got to be e-mails going back and forth which shows he did legal research or gave them advice or something. and i'd be willing to bet you dinner, he was a strawman, and he was held on to placate the vice president of the united states, and they gave his son a sweetheart deal. elizabeth: the critics are saying the democrats circle the wagons around joe biden and hunter, but when full-on investigating president trump with the russia collusion probe that wasn't there, that -- it didn't happen according to the mueller probe, there were certain, you know, interactions there, but it was never collusion. so why is it okay to go full-on with president trump but not look into joe and hunter biden? [laughter] >> well, that's called politics. it's which party's in power. if you're looking at what is going on right now with president trump, it has nothing to do with justice or fairness, it's just who has the votes. and it's the same thing with hunter biden ping. they're not going to investigate

him. he's in their party, they're in power. if you're looking for truth and justice in the congress, we need to look elsewhere. it just doesn't happen. i come from the criminal justice system where we have an independent arbiter, it's called a court system. and they keep us on the straight and narrow. that doesn't exist with congress. so they're not going to investigate they're own, they're not going to go after them. they're going to go after the president and try to dirty him up and get ready for the election. that's what this is all about. elizabeth: yeah. you know, here's the thing, we have the president really going after nancy pelosi hard last night at the rally in dallas. he attracted tens of thousands of people. he personally attacked her as crazy. watch this. >> that crazy nancy, she is crazy. the radical democrats want to destroy america as we know it, they want to indoctrinate our children and teach them that america -- elizabeth: the president said that after months of nancy pelosi hammering away with personal attacks against trump.

let's step back from here. where does this go, danny, what do you think? >> i really don't know. i know that they want to prolong this. they say they want to wrap it up. they don't. they like leaking information and dirtying up the president and coming out with people with misquotes and having secret meetings and secret hearings and throwing congressmen out of meetings and things. they like this. this is theater. and right now i think they're struggling with the possibility of one of these individuals running against president trump, and it's -- some of the polls say it's not going to happen. he's not going to get defeated. so they have to do everything they can to dirty him up, to paint him with a bad brush, and that's what this is the all about. it's theater. it's just drama. elizabeth: the crime and misdemeanor, where is it in the president saying to the ukraine leader, you know, mentioning joe biden on the call? meaning that's his political rival? how to you see that? >> i see it as de minimis. i've done a lot of public

they're talking now from going a after thanksgiving to christmas with hearings, you know, every day. the republicans have to show they're serious about it, and that's partly because there are, you know, things that the president's doing that are sort of self-inflicted wounds that are raising doubts among people who would otherwise defend the president because, you know, if you and i know the story quite clearly, but in all the media sort of the fog of war, people aren't really clear about what's going on. so i think mitch mcconnell is going to have to make sure that we have this hearing and, that you know, the president's side of the story gets -- elizabeth: well, if they're talking about next month, that means that the house is going to draw up articles of impeachment. but here's what else is going on, that means it's happening pretty quickly. axios is reporting that it got leaked to it a new democratic internal poll of voters in 57 of the most competitive battleground districts that either trump won or republicans flipped, watch this. the impeachment inquiry is only

supported by 49% of the voters in those districts versus 48% who are against it. so how are they going to do -- and, basically, what is going to be the crime and misdemeanor here? >> well, one of the things that the democrats are doing is they're keeping this, you know, in closed hearings. and adam schiff says the reason he's doing that is because you can't let one witness hear what another witness says because then they could corroborate their testimony -- elizabeth: but he sure is leaking, so if you leak, then you can corroborate, right? >> well, the thing is, that's a kind of frail defense. it's okay if he uses that now, but eventually they're going to have to have public hearings. and when they do have those public hearings, that's when you're going to start seeing people breaking out in different camps because people are going to see more clearly -- some of the things like you were discussing with your former guest earlier about how there, you know, if anybody was using

influence in an inappropriate way, it was joe biden and his son. it wasn't the president. elizabeth: what do you mean by that? >> well, because, you know, we all know that the son was not qualified, he couldn't speak the language, he didn't know anything about the natural gas industry. who is anybody kidding here? come on! the guy had that job because his father was the vice president. and that's influence-peddling. elizabeth: i hear what you're saying. let me turn to this quickly. a quinnipiac survey shows that 61% of women who don't -- who disapprove of the president right now. but i want to stay on what you're talking about, because nancy pelosi wants to protect those the house members in those vulnerable 57 districts that won her back the gavel and won the house for the democrats. >> honestly, i don't think she's going to get away with it -- elizabeth: why? >> because right now she's using this closed door hearing strategy and then leaking things and sort of putting out the

narrative as they want it told. eventually that is going to have to go public. they're going to have to have public hearings, and if they don't happen in the house, it will happen in the senate, and people will learn more clearly what exactly the questions are about what hunter biden was doing raking in all this money in the ukraine when he's completely unqualified for the job. that's going to become very public. right now it's, as i said, the fog of war, it's kind of mixed up in all the -- and they're able to put out the narrative. and i think the american electorate is basically divided as it is on most things, people who like the president and people who don't. and in the middle where it matters, those people will be deciding based on what they're able to learn from the hearings x. those hearings are going to have to be public. elizabeth: good to see you. great analysis there. the. coming up, new information about bernie sanders, elizabeth warren's government takeover of health care. this as the democratic party's

pastor robert jeffress, that's all at the top of the hour waiting for you. see you then. elizabeth: you you then, lou. senator warn and bernie sanders' big government plans would double the size of government if elected. let's bring in adriana cohen. your reaction to that? >> yeah. it's interesting, liz, you know, it's come out now that the medicare for all plan that elizabeth warren is supporting is going to be much more costly than originally estimated. so right now her wealth tax is estimated to bring in $2.75 trillion in revenue, but that's not going to cover the now $34 trillion cost of medicare for all over a decade. and so clearly, the middle class is going to foot the tab here, liz. elizabeth: to your point, it's a good one, why switch horses midstream? why would you go for the democrats' gigantic, costly takeover of health care, of

student loans, you know, all of -- they can't even fix the border or, you know -- >> right. elizabeth: -- other issues. what we're looking at right now is their plans would actually increase total health care spending by a stag therring $7 trillion versus how much income taxes the government pulls in. your reaction? >> yeah, absolutely. i think elizabeth warren made a grave mistake, because she could have distinguished herself from bernie sanders by supporting, you know, a public option or taking a more moderate approach on health care like joe biden. but instead, she's adopted bernie sanders' medicare for all plan versus creating her own, and bernie sanders has admitted that it's going to raise taxes on the muddle class, yet -- on the middle class, yet elizabeth warren refuses to admit that. how is that possible if she has the same plan? she's losing credibility by the moment here. american voters, whether you're democrat or republican, you want the truth, and she's not giving it to her constituency. elizabeth: you know, even one of warren's top economic advisers,

uc-berkeley professor, he admits her tax plan won't fully pay for her government takeover of health insurance. we also have her advocating free college tuition. sallie mae just flew 100 workers, sales reps, sales workers on a junket to hawaii to celebrate the record $1.6 trillion in student loan debt. really? >> it's just incredible. i mean, look, we know government spends way too much money, there's so much fraud, waste and abuse. why would any voter want to make the government bigger and more powerful? so it just doesn't make any sense. and look, here we are, elizabeth warren's own economic advisers that helped her create her plan for health care, they're even saying the wealth tax isn't going to cover it. so that translates very loudly to the american people, the middle class, your taxes are going to go up. so buyer, beware. elizabeth: the economy is now working for the lower income classes, the middle class, for

women, for workers, for minorities. mark three seven, columnist, points pout a poll that shows the majority says it's not working for them. you know who say they're not? the liberal hard left. they're the unones complaining. your take on that. >> it goes in the face of reality. we know that median income is up $5,000 under the trump administration in just three years. that's huge. compare that with median income that only rose by $1,505 for the past 16 years under president bush and president obama. so the gains that president trump has implemented for the middle class cannot be underestimated, they're fantastic. and we know that the economy's grown substantially, the stock market value has grown substantially, we have record low ununemployment. why any american would want to change course, you know, radically change course and erase all these gains is just baffling. elizabeth: adriana cohen, great

president trump: the same people pushing us to fight endless wars overseas want us to open our borders. their policies would up port terrorism right on to our shores with american-issued visas. liz: that was president trump at his dallas rally. tens of thousands showed up. let's ask california gubernatorial candidate john cox. >> the politicians are playing with the security of this country. i'm sitting in san diego 30 miles from the border. i see politicians playing games with the security of my family and i don't like it. bad enough that it's a sanctuary state for criminals.

but they are playing games with the important security work we need done at the border. we need a guest worker program. we need to make sure we have knowledge of whose coming across this border, and we need a wall. but the politicians don't want to do that. look at the democratic presidential candidates. they are falling all over each other which is the exact opposite of what we are doing. liz: the senate republicans, and they are talking about the possibility of a government shutdown before thanksgiving either over the border wall, potentially impeachment, too, because the house is fighting against the funding for the border wall. the resolution runs out november 21, john. >> they don't want to solve this problem, liz. the more fighting involved, the more money they can raise for their campaigns. i'm a businessman.

i want to solve the problem. we have to get a solution. we have got to fix the guest worker program and make sure we have security. look at what's going on in mexico with the drug kingpins being let go. this ought to send shivers up the spine of anybody who lives in a border state where you have gun traffickers and human traffickers looking to make money by bringing all that into the country. liz: the president of mexico getting criticized for how the capture of the son of the notorious drug lord he will chad el chapo was hand. >> the governments are corrupt. they don't though how to manage their affairs. they have secret deals with criminals. the drug lords you have to know

are probably deep inside the government of mexico as well as a lot of the latin american countries. that's a real problem for us. that's why again the security has to be paramount. that's number one job of government and i applaud the president and condemn any politicians holding up furchlding for the needed border security. we need to back our border patrol. they do a dangerous job. they lay their life on the line every single day. liz: the president said this is a national emergency. we have republicans fighting against that. barack obama said i think it's 13 national emergencies. why is swine flu a national emergency but the border is not? >> i have a friend of mine who is deeply involved in trying to stop the human trafficking. we have heard stories from people we know in san diego of
