impeachment, what the founding fathers envisioned was the last resort tool to be deployed to take out a duly-elected president of the united states. this all conviction by innuendo, conviction by speculation is something that is so dangerous today in america. i just hope the american people are seeing through this. they don't need law professors to tell them if it is right or wrong. the american people can see this. liz: "slate" magazine, impeachment drive climbs into the clown car. pointless hearing before the house's most competent committee. today's hearing relied on professors none had first-hand accounts of anything the president did with ukraine. i want to get to this. here is republican witness jonathan turley talking about the democrats case. watch this. >> i'm concerned about lowering impeachment standards to fit a paucity of evidence and abundance of anger. i believe this impeachment not only fails to satisfy the

freedom, he is nile guarder in. you're reaction to that? >> first, thanks very much for having me on the show from london here and with regard to that video that has been watched all over the world, it should be pointed out that really it's trudeau of canada who is the one who is mocking president trump. emmanuel macron may be joining in, boris johnson hosting it all not saying anything at all. the dutch prime minister is there. not saying anything. canadian lead ear and possibly the french leader as well. this is blown out of proportion of many critics president trump. overall the nato leaders meeting in london the past few days has been successful for president trump and for the united states. you have all of the 29 members of the nato alliance agreeing to further increase defense spending to meet the minimum 2% of gdp spend that is expected of

all alliance members. you have seen very significant increases already over the last three years since president trump took office in terms of overall defense spending levels. more than $100 billion of additional defense spend having been put in place by nato members. that figure is going to rise to increase of $350 billion by 2024. so for the first time in decades you're seeing significant levels of increased defense spending, across the alliance. that is really in large part due to u.s. leadership in particular, president trump's very forceful messaging and leadership on this issue. so, i think overall actually this was a very good summit for, for the president. it is unfortunate that i think the liberal media tends to focus on some very minor element of the summit, canadian leader is just behaving actually very badly. liz: to your point be the criticism of european leaders

has been this, that they can be postmodern in their own criticism of the united states and president trump but the fact is europe spends far less on the military than the u.s. does, on their own military. covers 2.2%. the u.s. spends nearly 3 1/2%. europe spends on building out the gigantic welfare states while the u.s. has to step in to defend them. you pointed out under president trump more troops on the ground in europe than president obama. president trump did what president george w. bush couldn't, get nato countries to increase their spending on nato. >> look at the u.s. spending level, 3.5% of gdp, compare that with the average across european members of nato and that average actually is, i would say, closer to, it around 1.6% of -- liz: pretty low. >> but there is a huge difference here. liz: a huge difference. we have "atlantic" magazine

and certainly, as you noted, iraq has challenges. they're sure, therefore shouldn't be sort of farmed out detention center for the europeans. liz: your reaction? >> yeah. i think that's, you know that is a very important point there. and, you know, france is actually a big producer of islamist radicals. many have gone off to fight in iraq and syria for isis. france doesn't want the radicals back, not only because the french courts probably would have difficulty convicting a lot of these, a lot of these terrorists actually. it is same across europe where you have liberal judges who, who find it very hard to actually put terrorists in jail and also i think with emmanuel macron there is a great deal of hypocrisy here. macron talk as big game, how many french troops are fighting in syria? small number of french special forces but macron is not

your take on this. >> well, first of all i have to discount anything that comes out of "the new york times" to begin with, liz. but with that said, when you open up a public corruption case of the preliminary inquiry, there are rules and regulations. it is more than just, you know, somebody makes an offhand comment, about somebody being corrupt. you need facts demonstrable, and facts that have to be shown to open a preliminary investigation. now to open a full field investigation, it takes much more than that. so there are more facts and there is a little bit more after robust reason to do things like this. liz: but here's the problem. the, anti-trump dossier was basically backed by fusion gps, the cofounders, in their new book, say quote, that basically the anti-trump dossier was not a finished product. that the details were

unconfirmed, claims were quote, doubtful, not for public hearing t was based on secondhand sources. so the fbi takes that dossier, uses that as a road map, they get fisa wiretaps on the trump campaign. then they start leaking about it, to the if the ball rolling to get rid of trump. all the while we have anti-trump text messages from peter strzok and lisa page, calling, you know trump loathsome, horrible. their supporters, awful. it is -- that is the context of it. >> what i mean when i said that the probably a little bit more robust open full investigation, what i also want to point out is, probably these individuals didn't pay much attention to what the rules really were to open this investigation. when you get the strzok, page mccabe, the lack of leadership in comey that is what happens in things like that. i have no doubt probably they

did lower the bar for themselves to do something like this and support it. it's tragic and it's disgraceful. liz: what to watch for. republican intelligence in house intelligence last year, stated that the fisa applications didn't disclose that the dnc and the clinton campaign paid for the steele dossier even though fbi officials knew about that. this is going on. want to get into what the text messages said, trump is awful, loathsome, disaster. republican supporters are branded at crazies and innor rant hillbillies? >> what can be said for that, insane people saying stupid things they shouldn't put on paper. i don't know what the matter is with people. you're right, information necessary to obtain the fisa warrant was full of circular reporting and it wasn't the right information. they did not bring to the judge the information that the dnc and the clinton campaign was behind
