rises, stocks fall. take a look at hong kong, down over 2 and-a-half percent, japan down nearly 2% as this death toll does continue to rise drastically. >> if you take a look at the european session, you'll see a similar pattern on your screen, as far as the dax apand cac, the ftse, all heading lower. lauren: let's get you more information on that top story this morning, the latest on the coronavirus. at least 170 people are confirmed dead in china from the virus. only deaths in china at this moment. the world health organization is scheduled to meet today, they will decide if it's a global emergency. the white house is assembling a task force to monitor the virus currently, only five cases have been confirmed in the u.s. >> nearly 200 americans returning from wuhan, china are under a voluntary three day quarantine. if no symptoms show, they can

travel home and be monitored from their homes for the next two weeks. 800 americans are still believed to be trapped in china. a growing number of airlines overseas and in the u.s. are suspending flights to the region. in the meantime, several major companies, google, amazon, restricting their employees' travel to china. amazon does not have offices in wuhan but does have operations in other parts of the country. lauren: that is certainly something that investors are monitoring. they're also monitoring the latest earnings reports. amazon does report today. revenue, when the company reports, one big question. will amazon deliver after announcing a record-breaking holiday and after an earnings miss in the previous quarter, that's what investors want to know. shares of facebook are lower in the premarket. the company brought in more revenue and users but its expenses jumped more than 30%. tesla shares, they are in overdrive this morning. the company's earnings better than expected on record fourth quarter sales.

tesla promising to l sell more than half a million vehicles this year. microsoft shares are rallying in the premarket. the company's earnings topped expectations on nearly 40% jump in its cloud computing business. >> president trump heads to michigan today for a visit with auto workers, a day after celebrating another major win on trade. of course, signing the usmca into law. lauren: let's get the details from blake berman, he's in washington. >> reporter: president trump could have used the oval office to sign the usmca trade deal like he does with most legislation. however, many within the white house felt that this was a kind of piece of legislation that needed to be elevated. so wednesday morning the president used the backdrop of the south portico of the white house to sign the legislation. a second trade deal victory lap for the president in as many weeks. >> this is a cutting edge, state of the art agreement that protects, defends and serves the great people of our country. thanks to our pro worker, pro

change or provide enough protection for workers. lauren: a new study warning that the wealth tax proposals made by democratic presidential candidates bernie sanders, but also elizabeth warren, could double the u.s. trade deficit over the next decade. conservative think tank the tax foundation released the report, also said that the tax plans would also fall short of their campaign's estimates and that taxing the wealthy would reduce the nation's gdp. >> game over, that is president trump's message to democrats on the impeachment trial. newly resurfacing videos of john bolton and adam schiff bringing their credibility into question. lauren: and republicans are pouncing on that. we have doug mcelway live in the nation's capitol. when do we get an answer. doug, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. certainly get a better idea of how long this thing will plow on today.

the president's spirits were bouyed by the release of old videotapes of john bolton which the president team maintains casts some serious doubt on his credibility. in a tweet the president said game over in all caps and linkerred to the video bolton did in august of 2019 in which he made no mention of a quid pro quo and he said fighting corruption in ukraine was a high priority. take a listen. >> the president called to congratulate president zelensky on his election and on his success in the parliamentary election. they were warm and cordial calls, we're hoping that they'll be able to meet in warsaw and have a few minutes together. >> reporter: the back and forth of witness questions continued for some time. democrats want to hear from john bolton himself. republicans maintain the president's defense maintains that if bolton is called, they'll have to call other witnesses. here is schiff on bolton.

rational. we're seeing companies that are doing very well, tesla, for example. others, facebook where there's issue with spending, it's dropping. amazon has beaten earnings estimates 75% of the time over the last two years. in the last couple weeks, a lot of the earnings estimates for amazon had been rising. this is going to be a real tell for the market after the bell today. we're going to be watching everything from its prime adoption, about 5 million new prime members signed up in the fourth quarter during the holiday season, new products like echo and kin del an -- kine and some of the shipping initiatives. those services have quadrupled. that could worry investors. they're spending a heck of a lot of money building out services. margins are starting to compress, this could affect amazon. all eyes will be on the stock. deirdre: i like that you alerted the shipping business. as people who own amazon stock and maybe people who don't know,

this is how aws, the amazon cloud service essentially started where they developed it internally and ended up offering it to clients and many people say it is exactly the way that shipping is going to go so there are a lot of eyes on that. i want to ask you a larger question before we move on to other earnings, we've been talking about the coronavirus, the effect that it could possibly have on the global economy. to what extent do you worry about that for the global economy and then also for the stock market? >> look at the futures this morning, deirdre. i think you have to worry. the markets were calmed slightly by the president's comments of speaking with president xi. we cannot believe a lot of what china is telling us, if they're reporting 5,000 cases and in reality it's more like probably 15 or 20,000 cases. this is not just a terrible human tragedy, it's also a major potential economic tragedy. not just in terms of just the supply chain issue, but all the

companies, whether it be google, whether it be starbucks that are shutting down operations in china, not to mention the loss of the chinese consumer. there's a lot of mcdonald's hamburgers that won't be sold in china over the coming weeks. so if history is any guide, we go back to the sars outbreak over a decade ago, our market fell about 12% recovering. so i don't want to -- deirdre: it did recover. it did recover. to your point about this virus, it has done more damage in these first few weeks than sars did in nine months. so we do have to pay attention to that. very quickly, jonathan, based on what you saw yesterday, facebook, tesla, microsoft, were there any standouts to you in that batch? >> it's cost in my mind, first and foremost. a disappointing move in facebook, down 6% before the bell. this those do with spending. facebook's margins have compressed from 45% in 2017 to

34% in 2018 to 34% in 2019. so investors are looking for growth and my fear is if companies don't knock it out of the park, you'll probably see them fall just as facebook did. all eyes will be on amazon. deirdre: thank you very much. cheryl casone live in miami, you saw her there. she's there for the big game and you have fun facts about how the markets will play after the big game? cheryl: i've got fun predictions for you, deirdre. the super bowl big deal for wall street. s&p global market intelligence out with some fun stats on the big game. when the teams of the super bowl combine to score at least 46 points, the average stock market return, 15.8%, that's in the past. also of note, the market returns an average of 13.8% after an nfc win versus 9.7% after an afc win. the 49ers won the nfc division championship, th the chiefs aree

you. preparing for the big game is a big deal for the players, from what they eat, to what they do or don't do before they get on the field. i want to bring in jack brewer, somebody that calls miami home. good morning, jack. >> great to be here. i'm home. cheryl: let's talk about what the players do to get ready for the game. we know they've been sequestered. the media appearances are over. what are they doing right now to prepare for sunday. >> they try to make it as normal as possible right now. the big deal is like you said, what do you eat. normally you get to go home after practice. now you're in miami, in a different location. nfl teams normally travel on saturdays. now it's a little bit different. so these guys right now are just trying to get back to a normal schedule. and when you talk about game planning, which is really what matters right now, andy reed has really tried to simplify the offense for the chiefs going into this game. cheryl: simplify, that's an interesting word.

>> simplify. you don't want to go in with all the stuff going on, you know, the players are dealing with family members, they each get like 15 tickets to the game so you have people coming in town. so you really want to he keep it as normal as possible. cheryl: what about food? i'm somebody that eats maybe 1,000 calories a day. they're probably eating 3, 5,000 calcalories a day. what are they eating? they have to be pretty strict. >> they are. when i played, we loaded up on meat. now guys are a lot more cleaner diets because they take in different types of protein. so it just depends, you know, different positions. some of the guys are watching their weight. a lot of the offensive linemen don't want to put on too much weight, eating out more than they normally would. so you really have to watch yourself going into a big game like this. cheryl: you have that experience when you could play for the vikings, for the giants, i believe the cardinals for you.

roominger gooroger goodell annol do a tribute to kobe bryant. i think it's amazing but, wow, the fact that the biggest day for football is going to honor a basketball star, what did you make of this news? >> kobe bryant transcends all sports. for me, my generation, i'm the same age as kobe and most of these players grew up idolizing kobe bryant. the way that he worked, it's known across all sports that kobe bryant worked harder than anybody out there and so this really hit a lot of players hard going into this big game. cheryl: football players, that's what i find so incredible. >> it is. he meant that much to sports in general and just -- i mean, i can't tell you how much work ethic really sticks out for a professional athlete. when you have someone like kobe that you knew outworked everyone around him, he really was looked up to and admired by so many. cheryl: such a tragedy as we go

maris. if witnesses are called, we should know on friday if that happens, how long does this go on for? doug mc. mcelway said there could bees many as 18 witnesses called. >> if witnesses are called, it could be on indefinitely of. there will be questions about executive privilege with several of the witnesses, talking about high ranking people in the trump adadministration potentially called, like bolton. these witnesses could open up the door to more witnesses as questions are asked so that could really prolong the process. it seems like witnesses are likely to not be called based on the votes republicans seem to be on the path of he voting down party lines which means they'll likely vote for no witnesses. but anything can happen. if this process has taught us anything, it's that. we don't know what's coming next. lauren: some mod t rest -- mode democrats might vote for no witnesses as well. either way, the lawmakers are

tied up with the impeachment trial which means they can't work on anything else for the country and on monday, americans go to the polls. so this isn't only about removing president trump from office, it's about removing him from the ballot. >> absolutely. that's what this is doing. this is taking up all the time. have we heard about any other issues. no, it's all focused on impeachment. and of course, there's a political aspect to this. it's about what's going to happen in the he election. so certainly prolonging it, ending it, this is all for political gain one way or the other. lauren: what happens to the republican senators should they vote for witnesses. bloomberg news writes, at quitting president trump is a bold affirmative act and it will mark senators as political made men because they would be tied to president trump. but if they don't vote to acquit the president, then the president will attack those senators in ads and that could hurt their re-election, no? >> there's a political analysis to everything. some of the senators that have

been swing senators for republicans are facing potentially tough re-election campaigns in their states. so certainly that's going to be a factor. but at the end of the day, the senators are supposed to take themselves out of that self-interest point of view about re-election and focus on what they've seen come out of the impeachment hearings, what they've heard, and make a determination based on that. of course, there's going to be an element of political angle to any of this. but certainly can cut both ways. lauren: let me ask you this, adam schiff talks about bribery and extortion, why didn't the house charge that in the first place? >> i think they needed something to hitch their wagon to. you know a lot of the arresting ament has been, does impeachment have to include a charge that would be in the criminal code. not something vague like a abuse of power. so bribery, that could be a crime and i think that's why there's so much focus on that. although if this was in a court of law, these charges would have been thrown out a long time ago.

lauren: misty, thank you for the perspective and the expertise this morning. deirdre, over to you. deirdre: thank you. facebook agreeing to pay $550 million to settle a class action lawsuit due to use of facial recognition technology. the case states that facebook's photo tag suggestion tool when it tells you to tag your friend uses stored biometric data without user consent. the allegation is that facebook violates the illinois biometric information privacy act. facebook by the way told investors about that as part of the fourth quarter earnings yesterday. the case has been going on since 2015. lauren: mark zuckerberg is okay with not being liked, imagine that. he made a comment during the earnings call, but zuckerberg says he intends to change his tone in order to address the company's increasingly vocal critics. deirdre: it's been an interesting year, at least last year was for facebook. because by far, if you don't count apa pell, it was the best
