it's so important to get the chinese to agree to the world health organization. we have been requesting this since january 6. we are hoping the exphien ease will act quickly on that. we are seeing a flair rapid spread of this disease in china. it's hard to get a handle on the severity. we don't know how many people might be affected in china. we are hearing 23,000. but it could be many more who have smaller level symptoms and aren't presenting at the hospital. lou: is there intelligence on what the chinese are doing? is there intelligence on other countries, whether it be in southeast asia, europe, a con fir dense level you can ascribe to it about how many cases

actually are out there? >> at this point we have to take the chinese at their word on the reporting of 23,000 cases and 400 fatalities until we can get on the ground. but my message for the american people would be the risk to any american is really quite low. what president trump is doing is take appropriate steps to keep that risk low. those are the measures you talked about. lou: i'm trying to get to kind of bring it down from the 30,000-foot level and get to the point people are worried about. they are worried about whether we understand the incubation period. how it compares to flu and sars and swine flu and others. can you give us a sense of how confident the public health officials are that they understand the incubation period and the severity of it, whether

expressed by mortality rates? >> i understand your concern and questions there. the mortality rate, we are seeing about 2% mortality from the chinese reported data. but let's say there are 100,000 individuals. i don't know. 100,000 who are infected, but it's not a serious case and they have not presented at the hospital. it could be significantly lower. in terms of the incubation period. with the coronavirus we see a 2-4 day i cu -- incubation peri. but this is a new strain. we have to get to the bottom of what is the incubation period. historically with a respiratory
