what are we to make of this direct threat from china to europe, your thoughts? >> i think that is right, huawei is one of the national champions, it is a company in china that goes far beyond anything that we have. it would have to be american company in which we have our entire national pride invested and that's how they think of huawei. and they're determined to have a showdown, london, paris, berlin and brussels with the eu. so far they are ahead. i was quite surprised to hear a lot of british who otherwise you think was national security hawks saying we have to make a deal with huawei. we had to make a deal china over wall. and i said why do you think that, they said you americans are split. we hear your president, we hear mike pompeo, but the other security leaders in washington don't really speak out on the china threat. and they are still speaking mainly of cooperation and competition with china here in
7:56 pm
washington as opposed to the idea that this is a very serious possibility that truck under president trump has talked about that china could surpass her country. i heard president trump ensures you have, if hitler had won the election, china would be surpassing us now. this is a very serious challenge to american world leadership a lot of our administration at the working level and higher up don't see it that way, they are not quite as drink as mike pompeo, attorney general barr for example is very tough on china. >> mike pence has been the perfect on china. >> with this going on, the trade deal, the historic trade deal created i was so impressed with the secretary of state pompeo. he needs to be very clear about how this relationship is in the liens have to be followed and he
7:57 pm
is quite a balancing act. your thoughts? >> secretary pompeo has been very clear about china being the main strategic threat to america. they had a hard time saying that. that's where we separate the different voices that are being heard by the europeans. >> should we name names? [laughter] >> i think the problem is the holdovers, and attitude, there is a very short point made two weeks ago by the secretary of defense on the pentagon, he said we need to change the department of defense's culture in china. i ask what secretary meant by that, he said the pentagon is basically pro-china. they gleaned deeply, our aircraft carrier should visit hong kong, we need to have air to air exchanges.
7:58 pm
this is quite shocking if you're in europe trying to decide about huawei, you are the pentagon is to increase our change programs or china. we have the american military units. don't go into china and conduct exercises, they are called humanitarian or relief, but we are not training china from the pentagon's point of view, secretary of state mike pompeo -- >> we need to change another thing about the culture of the pentagon. that is that the chain of command is still in effect. in the boys and girls of the pentagon who have one word about 20 years, i need to get a little bottom modesty and get their head straight. i think that should be a course and yes even the air force academy. what do you think? >> amen.
7:59 pm
>> i don't think it's going to happen, i think mark esper was being especially frank to talk about the culture of the defense department as a problem in dealing with china. he said it in a roomful of never trumper's at a think tank called csis, i do not hear a lot of applause. >> they need to be applauding because they have a commander-in-chief and we have a president as you well know who deserves both the respect and highest and best efforts to move this country forward. and you are one of those setting the wonderful example. michael pittsburgh, thank you for being with us tonight. >> i command mark esper for being so frank. >> excellent. i applaud everywhere. i thanks so much. >> in our poll last night we asked if you believe in political polls, we are pleased to report 96% said no, that is it for us tonight, we thank you for being with us. tomorrow night warding chain, house minority steve scalise
