>> the real winner in the debate was night was donald trump. because i worry that we may very well be on the way to nominating somebody who cannot win in november. and if we choose a candidate who appeals to a small base like senator sanders it will be a fatal error. liz: let's take you back to the rally in colorado with trump 2020 campaign communications director tim murtagh. you watched it i presume last night. what was your reaction when you watched it? >> well, i mean that assessment is exactly right. it is a hot mess. is a train wreck. it is a complete meltdown, whatever you want to call it. whatever is going on the democrat side. whoever gets thrown free of that wreckage they have pot going on there is going to be lined up against a president that has been running free and building up steam for the last three years. we have another rally going on here again. we're raising money for the president in record amounts. his approval rating is reaching all team highs. this is a juggernaut that president trump has built for his re-election efforts.

who we're running against, a billionaire who calls women fat broads and horse-faced lesbians. and no, i'm not talking about donald trump. i'm talking about mayor bloomberg. liz: say this about the michael bloomberg's tweet of his debate performance. of course campaigns are going to show themselves in the best light. that was just one line in tweeted out video. your reaction, tim? >> i think mike bloomberg is finding out it is a lot easier to spend half a billion dollars on tv ads than it is to stand on stage to actually defend your bad record and i think what else is clear from that debate is that bernie sanders is still the front-runner on the democrat party. he has been that way for a while and for an entire year or more he has been the intellectual leader of the democrat party. everybody on the stage, everybody running on that side has been running on bernie's issues. whoever comes out as the standard-bearer after their convention will be running on bernie's big government socialist platform.

it doesn't matter who it is. liz: to your point, i have to also make a note here, let me turn quickly to michael bloomberg. bloomberg falsely claimed he had a change of heart of "stop-and-frisk" at the debate. while mayor, bloomberg vigorously defended it in court and public speeches up until a month before he launched the 2020 campaign of the president has his support of stop-and-frisk in places like chicago with out of control gun violence. your reaction to that? >> mike bloomberg has to remain consistent. this is character issue of the does he support it or does he not. until recently he was a steadfast supporter of it. the question the language that michael bloomberg used to defend the "stop-and-frisk" policy, as the president sported it but the way you described trohing young black men up against the wall and take young black men and xerox them he labeled an tire

he gets it passed through congress is his problem. he is running on this as a centerpiece of his campaign. we have to take him on his word. that is all we have to go with. what he is proposing, what is sort of dogma for most mainstream democrats is "medicare for all." that is complete government take over of the health care system. that means the elimination of employer provided health insurance. that means the insurance you get through your job is gone. it means that tens of millions of union workers across this country will lose the benefits they negotiated for. as you mentioned, schip is gone. tricare is bonn. it means the government takes over every decision. it means the government is between you and your doctor. that is not what this country was built on. it is not what our health care system was built on. it is not what our capitalist society knows. it is what bernie is running on. we have to take him at his word. that is the centerpiece of his campaign. for now he is the front-runner in the democrat process. he again remains the intellectual leader of the

obstruction, lying to congress and witness tampering. edward lawrence at the courthouse with more. edward? reporter: roger stone will serve three years and four months as the maximum under the sentence. there was more under each count. here is how it breaks down, liz. count one, obstruction of justice was three years. counts two through six. lying to congress. witness tampering stone serves 1months. all concurrent. they're running at same time. that is the reason he serves the 40 months that is the most unthis. he will have a fine of $20,000. all of this is on hold for a retrial hearing. the defense on stone's team argues that the jury forman was biased against stone from the beginning of this process. during the hearing judge amy berman jackson said it was stone who inserted himself in the incendiary issue adding that he lied. president trump considering a pardon or commuting stone's sentence but holding off.

listen. >> i'm not going to do anything in terms of the great powers bestowed upon a president of the united states. i want the process to play out. i think that's the best thing to do. because i would love to see roger exonerated and i would love to see it happen because i personally think he was treated very unfairly. reporter: and again he does have the chance for a retrial. now the department of justice has to file a motion, a rebuttal to that retrial motion by tuesday of next week. then a hearing will be scheduled for that. now if the judge decides no, on a retrial, then stone will service a sentence starting two weeks after that decision. after that we wait to see what the judge says. liz: edward lawrence, thank you very much. it didn't go well for rod blagojevich at a second trial. he was convicted of corruption at a second trial. always good to see edward law

making senator. we're seeing media such as "the washington post," it is not just "the wall street journal," we're seeing "the hill" magazine reporting yes, william barr is doing his job trying to hold d.c. accountable. we're seeing "washington post" op-ed saying since when, should it be left up to prosecutors, what a dangerous notion that is, why is there no oversight of prosecutors and why do they have discretion to suggest punishments for defendants who they have prosecuted? that wouldn't be acceptable anywhere else. your reaction to that? >> one of the things we know is that bill barr is doing a great job and i hope he says and continues to do a great job. and you're pointing out different disparities an inequities and i agree with all of that. what people say is look, let's clean up the doj. let's clean up the u.s. attorneys offices. let's get people who are

bringing political bias and personal opinion out of the way, and make certain that we return to being a nation of laws, that abides by the rule of law, with equal treatment in equal justice. and i know bill barr has to feel like he goes in there every day and plays "whack-a-mole" with problems that are cropping up and tries to find a way to deal with this. and it is going to take a little bit of time. it is not something that is going to be done but here's the good thing, is that people are saying we know that this exists. whether it is lisa page or whether it is jim comey or andrew mccabe, or whether it is bruce and nellie ohr, what they see is people that get special treatment and then people that are harshly treated. liz: how do you think this ends up? because we know that attorney general barr testified last april that, yeah, he was going

are serious when it comes to the homeless crisis. he devoted his entire state of the state address to it last night. >> a disgrace, that the richest state and the richest nation succeeding across so many sectors is falling so far behind to properly house, heal and humanely treat so many of its own people? liz: let's bring in former bush 43 deputy assistant. he's brad blakeman. great to see you, brad. your reaction to the president's take on california, san francisco, if you don't clean it up, we'll come in? they have more than half of the nation's homeless population. it is a dire crisis. >> it is. we have a democratic administration in the state. we have democratic administrations in the cities most affected by this it didn't happen overnight. this has been festering over a long period of time and it starts with the breakdown of the rule of law, starting with sanctuary cities and allowing tent cities to pop up and hurt the economy of their state and

of their cities. so donald trump is right. he took an oath to preserve, protect and defend the united states including every state in the union and if california can't protect its own citizens and create a safe environment, then it is up to the president to step in to do it for them. liz: we keep hearing lack of affordable housing. state and local policies, building codes, rent control. the governor will make 300 state-owned properties available for helping the homeless crisis there. it is a broader issue than that, right. >> it is. >> the chronic policy problem is deep in california. go ahead, brad. >> there is no doubt about it and what they have been doing they have been neglecting the problem. they have been kicking the can down the road? they have also encouraged a flight of their citizens, their tax paying citizens to other places because they can't govern themselves and now it's become a public health crisis. shame on them, california. they are the largest economy in
