defeat the virus. president trump: there is tremendous hope. i think we'll come out bigger, strong and better. we learned a lot. we learned who to rely on, month not to rely on. our country has been incredible. including the fact i just spoke to senator schumer. we both want to get to a good solution. watching and seeing people that weren't speaking getting along well because we all have one common aim. that's to get rid of this invisible enemy, get rid of it fast, and go back to the kind of economy we had, and maybe even better. david: the president's message of optimism being smeared by the media. saying it may be giving americans a false sense of hope. president trump was having none

of it. >> is it possible your impulse to put a positive spin on things may be giving americans a false sense of hope for preparedness right now? president trump: i don't think so. >> to not get approved drugs. president trump: it may work and may not work. >> nearly 200 dead. millions who are scared right now. what do you say to americans right now who are scared? president trump: i say you are a terrible reporter. i think it's a nasty question and i think it's a bad signal you are putting out to the american people. the american people are looking for answers and they are look for hope. let's see if it works. it might and it might not. i happen to feel good about it. but monos, i have been right a lot. david: the american people

aren't buying it. an abc news poll find 55% of americans approve of president trump's management of the covid-19 virus. his approval ratings rising 12 points from last week. in the united states 200 people have died and 18,000 have been infected. globally 60,000 people have contracted the virus. four u.s. senators caught dumping millions of dollars in stocks just before the market went over the cliff with the virus. senator burr is calling on the senate ethics committee to review the trades. also exposed. california democrat dianne

feinstein and her husband who sold between them $1.5 and $6 million in stock. james inhofe sold $400,000 in stock at the end of january. georgia senator kelly loeffler and her husband who is chairman of the new york stock exchange began to sell shares the same day her health committee hosted an all snores meeting with health officials. sales had gone through for her worth up to $3.1 million. she also bought shares in two tech companies. citrix and o -- and oracle. >> if you look at personal transaction reports filed, it notes at the bottom that i am only informed of my transactions

several weeks after they are made. there are decisions made every day regarding my portfolios that i'm not involved in. like any other trade, you can't see into the future. david: my next guest is running against loeffler. she was appointed to her position, not elected. >> that's correct, the governor appointed her. david: you are fighting her from the republican standpoint. what do you make of her excuses? >> it's sad. the fact that she has to give this excuse at a time when people are losing their businesses, losing their lives, losing their health. she profited off a meeting that was held on january 24.

she bought and sold stock after that. and her excuse sound like this is the way we do it. if you have money, we have other people than our tough. what she didn't answer is did she have anything going on beforehand. she only says she was notified. it's just sad that we have to deal with it. you look at a time in which senators are making a profit when i like most georgia voters are losing money. david: i have been looking at my 401k. it's not a pleasant sight. there is a stock act, the excellent reporting from peter schweizer. it's trading by congress on the basis of of information they get that no one else does. technically it may not be

insider trading, but the stock act is supposed to prerent it from happening and clearly it isn't. >> you are not suppose to trade on information you have and others don't. the american people need to know when the president and all of us are trying to work toward a solution for them in this time of crisis, this is the very reason people hate congress. this is the reason it's such a difficult area to work in because of this very thing right here. at the end of the day what does it look like to the american people when they are not able to do the same thing as senator loeffler and others. this is not what we are supposed to be about. the american people are suffering and they are having to answer questions. the use of the information they gained in a meeting. david: always a pleasure to talk

to you. thank you very much. new studies offering statistics that more men are dying due to the coronavirus than women. 2/3 of patients requiring hospitalization were male, and in italy, 70% of the fatalities were male. the virus task force coordinator deborah birx discussing this trend. >> from italy we are seeing a concerning trend. the mortality in males seems to be twice in he age group of females. this should alert all of us to continue our vigilance to protect our americans that are in nursing homes. david: joining me, dr. oz, host of the dr. oz show. are these stats significant?

is it too long to make this on the sex of the people getting the disease. >> men do die more frequently than women. and the question is why? in china a vast number of men who smoke and very few women. it isn't socially acceptable. there is also a strong trend in italy. and men have more cardiovascular disease. generadisease. men generally have more blocked arteries. men don't seem to be able to handle it as well. david: one statistic is glaring. the mortality rate for this disease is 1.3 percent. the mortality rate in italy is

.01 he *. >> when you go to the hospital in italy they will industry all you based on what they have available. the stories we have been hearing from front line personnel, they have to decide, you get to live, you get to die. the mayors and the mcsystem are trying to prevent a tsunami of people flooding into our healthcare system. we haven't quite overwhelmed the system. as long as we have enough equipment, we can keep going. david: if you listen the to the media you could hear the shouting of questions.

you would get the idea we are where italy is. that we have the same lack of resources and the same lack of beds that italy does. that's not true, is it? >> it's not true today. the whole goal of social distancing and effective move by the american people to change the way we deal with each other is to prevent that reality. what caught me more about the press conference. there was big news today being discussed that didn't get the discussion i thought it would. this paper from france showing the use an old drug, malaria drug used with z-pack seems to have an effect on this. david: hydroxychloroquine.

i don't mean to harp on the media, but the media was trying to develop a fight between the president and this. dr. fauci said we don't have to have a fight. we have a disagreement. the president is optimistic. i am a little more laid back but we agree on the essentials. are you with the president in feeling optimistic about the results of this. >> dr. fauci is a disciplined leader, he's doing what a good scientist would do. he knows there was other evidence from china and other countries where this was used but not studied. you get patients and ran doize them. the way to do it right. but that would take a long time. i am pretty sure they will say

let's let physicians use it for the high-risk population. they shorten the amount of time the patients excreted the virus to 6 days. the norm is 20 days. it may be more like a flu virus with its impact on us, so it's still dangerous, but not as contagious. that alloys us a lot -- that allows us a lot more freedom to see how it behaves in our country. david: we have to be careful with the fda and other organizations that protect our health with regard to new medicines. are we cutting any corners that would make things morri more --y or are we doing the right

thing^. >> if you are allowing these to be prescribed for covid-19 you are cutting a corner. if a drug that's been on the market for 65 years could be effective, there are some potential side effects. i think it's worth the change. we should be doing the study starting today, and we'll know in six days. in the meantime the task force is going to liberalize use of these medications. david: dr. fauci agreed with you that this drug has been tested so long or time that the side effects are de minimus. thank you very much. we appreciate that. the chinese refusing to take responsibility for their role in

steaked -- affected the g-7 summit. instead the president will be talking to world leaders by videoconference. china's failure to admit they covered up the news of the virus. >> i wanted to ask you whether the party apologize for that initial cover-up. >> i think that statement is a distortion of facts. david: mostly it's come from china itself. we detailed the steps the communist party took to cover up the spread of the virus including a gag order placed on hospitals and labs on january 3. just this morning the director general heaped praise on beijing

for announcing no new cases of the coronavirus. he applaud the transparency of the chinese, one day after a chinese doctor who sounds the alarm on the virus was killed by the virus. he was reprimanded for daring to share information about the virus with other doctors. this is the man they persecuted. joining me now, dr. michael pillsbury. author of "the hundred-year marathon." and director at the hudson institute. we were so excited about the news coming out of china that there were no new indigenous cases of the virus.

can we believe them on this issue? >> it's probably true. they broadcast to the whole world they are through the crisis. they are advertising they have the technique. and they are implying they are the new world leader. but you know despite what the ambassador said, anybody who wants to can go online and look at january 14, the w.h.o. website. you will see the w.h.o. says china says there is no human-to-human transmission. that was not true. the next day 20 chinese came in the white house with president trump, henry kissinger and myself. we saw the chinese up close and some of them could have been carrying it. they should at mitt what they did wrong.

it's online. january 14. david: i have kind of lost the astonishment how easily and readily they lied. and many other things. now they are claiming that this doctor who they were persecuting, specifically persecuting is now a national hero. if you need any more evidence of lies from there, i don't know what you need. >> a total of 8 doctors were forced to sign confessions they were spreading rumors. the international attention to dr. li has paused reformers and scientists in china to issue this apology. but the hardliners are stillth charge. that's where this rumor comes from that the u.s. military

started the virus. there is no chance they some how spread a virus that's clearly chinese in origin. this is destroying trust for china, at least in the white house and possibly around the world. they should take it back. david: those inside china who are buying it are making it up or being forced to buy it. let me switch to something you and lou dobbs have been extraordinary about exposing. the degree to which the chinese have taken over the process of manufacture of american pharmaceuticals. which is to an extra soshedy degree, 80-90 percent. they say they are on to cures for the coronavirus working with other pharmaceutical industries, the french, et cetera.

should we entitle them with some role to play in coming up with a cure or an anti-virus considering their past? >> working for a cure or a vaccine that works is one thing. there are many companies in china in trials. but the larger issues our dependency on china that was never approved by the public or congress. it slowly happened over a 25-year period. it's not just pharmaceuticals. it's parts for military equipment linked to china. david: should the president use the powers that he now has after having declared an emergency to bring that back home, bring that manufacturing industry of

services committee. let's talk about the border. do you think the president is on the right track? it does appear the president is in agreement with crossing that border. how about canada? >> it seems like a no-brainer to me to stop the flow of people coming over both of our borders. if we want to flatten the curve we want to keep those from other countries from coming into the united states, unless they are u.s. citizens coming into the united states to be near their loved ones. david: we talked about the the chinese coming to see the president when the virus was much stronger than they were letting on. you say china should pay reparations for their negligence in all this. how would that work? >> michael pillsbury wrote the

textbook. it was good to hear from him. i have been all over my district and i heard from so many constituents who have been negatively affected by this disaster. they are asking the question, when are we going to hold china accountable for their role in negligence that led to this coronavirus disaster in the united states. i call on president trump to do what he can to force the chinese to pay reparations either by forgiving the $1 trillion china holds in our national debt. or set up a coronavirus relief fund for those put out of work and those infected. we talked about the sheer amount of items that the american government purchases from china. i'm talking about the va. the largest healthcare network in the world purchases an

incredible amount of equipment from china. we should stop that immediately. the d.o.d. does as well. those are actions we can take to hold china's economy accountable. david: at the very least, the thing we should do is prevent the va representing the brave servicemen and women of our country who have done so much and sacrificed so much for our country, at least prevent them from being forced to use pharmaceuticals and others from china. >> on top of that, we should force the chinese to forgive the american debt they hold over a trillion dollars. the bill we are about to talk about in the senate, it will cost $1 trillion in taxpayer money. there is no reason the americans should shoulder the burden for that. that my daughter's generation

should pay the cost for what the chinese inflicted on this country because of their negligence and how they refused to prevent the spread of the coronavirus coming to the united states. david: the cost of this extraordinary effort to prevent our economy from collapsing. that cost could be miniscule when you think of the cost to the american economy of the complete and utter shutdown that some states like california, and now new york and illinois are doing with the economy. again it's hard to second guess people that are worried about the lives of their own citizens. but one would think there could be a better way than just completely shutting down 100%, the non-essential part of our economy. >> i talked to dozens of businesses in my district. in northeast indiana.

david: house intelligence committee chairman adam schiff fighting to keep his impeachment subpoenas secret. it led to the release of several private phone records including trump attorney rudy giuliani and journalist john solomon. schiff claiming in court papers that he has sovereign immunity. joining me is john solomon. the editor-in-chief of his new

media outlet, just the "america's news headquarters." apparently you shouldn't be concerned that schiff has your phone records. he subpoenaed somebody else's phone records. we believe it was rudy giuliani. they extracted my records from that and released it to the public without knowing the nature of the calls. while we are dealing with the coronavirus, there were other issues that ailed our nation. david: as dysfunctional as the fisa process was, in some cases by the fbi, lying and changing the records that were approved by the fisa judge. as bad as all that was, to give

a member of congress the full power of the fisa court to spy on americans is even worse. >> it does not appear there was any judicial intervention. the subpoenas went directly to the telephone companies. there was no judicial review. there is a court case going back to the 1970s where previously the appellate court in d.c. ruled that congress doesn't have an absolute right to take americans' phone records. david: i wonder if it will turn into more of a debate. he claims immunity. are you planning on challenging that immunity? >> i'm not a direct victim. i'm an ancillary victim. but up aware of conversations of people who were directly

affected by this. i want to know what happened. we need to expose it so it doesn't happen again. david: someone else caught in the cross wires of these investigation is general flynn. we are getting word that doj officials told robert muter that they had problems with the interviewing process that ended up in his conviction. can general flynn use this in any way to reverse the decisions against him? >> earlier this week i got ahold of correspondence between special counsel mueller and prior defense attorneys. they show behind closed doors when justice officials were talking to the prosecutors. the fbi didn't think nuke flynn was lying. the fbi concluded in january '17

that mike flynn wasn't an agent of russia. and they believe the conduct of the fbi, showing up in the white house without any notification and not giving him his rights, that that disturbed the justice department officials. behind closed doors, that's what they say. now go back to the leaks from inside the justice department that portray this as a different story. we were being sold a bill of goods in january of 2017. david: we have records that the interviewing agents' assessment was that flynn showed no signs of lying. >> remember the logan act thing, numerous leaks that he could be prosecuted under the logan act. the justice department officials told mueller in january that that was a stretch and they weren't going to do it. david: the media outlet is

own united states. there are reflections on what happens after life and reflections that lead us to god. >> the president says he believes we'll come out of this nation stronger. and i think that's right. i think it will keep us stronger in every day, including spiritually. problems with a way of of driving toward god or away from god. i'm praying everyone who watches this program, we think we are in control our lives, we are not. god is in control and he loves us, and he has a great plan for us. david: you hear the expression, in good times you are not in control. but you think i can decide where i want to eat or if i'm going to switch jobs. then something like this happens and you realize this virus is more in control than we are. we may kick it. we have had tremendous insights and progress made on the buy on

cal front against it with regard to what they are doing with medicines. i'm wondering where the power of prayer cops in here. do you believe with prayer we can haste be these attempts to beat the virus on a buy lodge cal front? d on a biological front? >> absolutely. we are not praying to an emergency nar -- notpraying to . god has not given us the spirit of fear. but of love, prayer and a sound mind. god doesn't want us to be panicked and overwhelmed by a spirit of fear. but at the same time god wants us to exercise a sound mind. take common sense precautions. he day when i get on the dallas

freeway, i pray for protect but i also fasten my safety belt. the best advice is to pray as if your safety completely depends upon god and take precautions as fit depends on you. david: i'm not a pastor, but i am familiar with verses in the bible. the new testament talks about how jesus counseled people not to be afraid. he got peter to walk on water, and jesus said keep look at me and suddenly peter lost his faith, looked down and went into the water. maybe not walk on water, but you can do a lot. >> there is a great quote. a scared world needs a fearless church. not stupid, don't get together.
