8:00 pm
and he will do a fantastic job, i would like to ask before i continue, just to say a few words please. >> of course you know from harvard, anyway, on a serious note we are engaged in the most significant mobilization since world war ii. we have a president with an invisible enemy in full force of government, a private enterprise bearing down on this problem for the american people. what we had to do today with president trump's order with respect to general motors, i like to background on that.
8:01 pm
industrial mobilization to make adequate ventilators particularly a short one to help the people of new york, detroit, new orleans, chicago, denver, seattle, all around this country as this virus bears down. the ventilators of the most important things for the patient to become more seriously ill. they are the lifeline for people. i personally have been working with fema and with hhs and ventilator companies making sure we can get what we need as quickly as possible. virtually, every one of those companies who's been cooperative, patriotic, moving and trump time with us as soon as possible but we did have a problem with gm. on the one hand, we have ford and g moving forward on a similar project. patriotically moving as fast as possible over the last several days, we ran into roadblocks. we cannot afford to lose a single day, particularly in the next 30 to 60 days. president trump, the defense
8:02 pm
production act is enhancing and accelerating, i salute him for doing so. it's going to make my job easier for the most part, we had tremendous from the private sector. today was the right day to do it. >> my administration is marshaling full power of the american government we will do that and that's what we've done. we will continue to do it until our work is one. economics scientific, medical, military and homeland security, all of this for the virus. we are working to sign contracts immediately with the major ventilator companies in the country including ge ..., medtronic hamilton, ill rub and via air, your all companies who do this, great companies. the fda will be reducing and waving unnecessary regulations
8:03 pm
to get this done. we are going to be getting rid of certain barriers for speed, want to to get done quickly. we've been doing a long time. they've been making ventilators a long time. hopefully general motors will join. under the normal conditions that you would be regular times, 29 times ventilators distributed in the u.s. every year. in the next 100 days, first of all, we've already delivered thousands of them but within the next 100 days, we will either make or get in some form, over 100,000 additional units and to put it in other words the next 100 days, we see over three times the number of ventilators made during a regular here in the united states and that doesn't include all of the thousands and thousands we've given to the various states, a
8:04 pm
lot of them. we delivered thousands took new york and they didn't know they got them. we also had thousand put in a warehouse, that was also new york. they just found out they were there. we have to make sure when we deliver things, they get distributed. earlier today, i spoke to the ceo of boeing, david calhoun and boeing will be producing and donating face shields to help our medical nationals are the front lines and putting intricate terms of the plastic and quality of materials are important. they are going to be top-of-the-line and they are going to do thousands of these a week. they've already tested the production and they are ready to begin producing all of these shields, plastic shield back over the place. boeing is also offering the use of their, what they call the cargo plane, the largest plane
8:05 pm
in the world. this is a picture of it, they called just a little while ago and that can take anything from us that's the biggest in the world. they are letting us use that for the distribution of product all over the country, especially the heavy product or large quantities of product and boeing will dedicate up to three planes to the mission of flying medical supplies anywhere we needed. each plane can carry 63000 pounds of cargo. also signed an executive order giving the department of defense and department of homeland security the authority to activate the ready reserve components of the armed forces. this will allow us to mobilize medical disaster and emergency response personnel, to help await our battle against the
8:06 pm
virus by activating thousands of experienced service members including retirees. we have a lot of people, retirees, military people coming back in to support the nation in this extraordinary time of need. they don't say how much, they don't say what are weakening paid? they just want to come back in. it's an incredible thing to say. it's beautiful. this afternoon, i signed into law $2.2 trillion in urgently needed relief for our nations families, workers, businesses and americans of every race, religion and creed and the 2.2 trillion goes to 6.2 trillion, depending on needs. the largest bill ever signed. not just emergency relief but of any kind. we've never signed a bill of that magnitude. incredibly, it was 96 to nothing in the senate and essentially the same thing in congress. they did it very quickly in the house. they did it very quickly.
8:07 pm
if you look at congress, what they've been able to do, the house, i guess they would call it a voice, something like that rarely takes place. ninety-six to nothing in the senate for the largest bill in the history of our country, that's pretty good. i want to think republicans and democrats for coming together for the whole of the nation, this is a great thing, a great victory. this will save companies that are incredible companies that are going to need help because of what happened. a month ago, they were outstanding, they've had the best year they've ever had and then we got hit. this will help them out. thousands and millions of jobs, millions of jobs. i just want to thank everybody for working so hard. include the people standing with me right here. the legislation extends a vital lifeline to american families in
8:08 pm
american workers with job retention, loans for small businesses in a big focus of the bill, small businesses. they are the energy, whatever you want to call it in terms of our nation to push people have no idea how big a factor peter can tell you this small businesses are in this country from an economic standpoint. from a job standpoint. we expand the unemployment benefits for workers very substantially in direct cash payments will go to american citizens, substantial. this legislation also provides a massive increase in funding for hospitals for the disaster relief fund and critical supplies occluding mass, respirators and pharmaceuticals of all types. speaking of commerce articles, we are working on vaccines and getting good response and we are working on therapeutics and cures and we have interesting things happening.
8:09 pm
this afternoon, apple launched a new tool created in partnership with our task force, cdc and fema. any individual who is concerned that they might have the virus can now download the free co vad dish 19 on their iphone. and answer a set of simple questions about the symptoms and risk factors. it's getting to be a modernized system. they will soon receive hhs recommendations on what to do next on whether they should get tested or not. again, we want people only to get tested if they think they needed. in a few moments, secretary will discuss partnerships without private sector that are providing meals to millions of students while schools are closed. they've both been incredible in
8:10 pm
the job they've done. appreciate them very much. grateful for the assistance of the ceo of panera bread company, they've been incredible to us. the people of our country, the logistics. throughout this ordeal, i've been awed and inspired by the american people more than anything else, more than anyone else. americans of every walk of life have followed the guidelines and shown incredible compassion and sacrifice greatly on behalf of their fellow citizens. every american to know that they are selfless and their heroic actions are saving lives and i want them to know. i'm very proud to be the president. very proud of the american people. it's an all out war against this virus. we are not testing nearly 100,000 patients a day, more than anybody in the world.
8:11 pm
even a couple of weeks ago, we tested more than any other country in the world. that continues to grow. widespread testing will allow us to monitor the spread of the virus and we are doing that quite accurately. tony will speak about that and coordinates with the state and hotspots as they arise. all of is driven. this testing will enable us to publish updated guidelines for state and local leaders. to have the evidence they need to have mitigation measures, for each location is different. some are very, very different, some are day and night. so mine great shape and some aren't in great shape. that will give accurate information. america is bravely battling this pandemic through cutting edge
8:12 pm
science, rational, deliberate and determined vigilance, the effort will be spared and waiting this. hopefully we will win soon and allow this and we will see what's going on around the world. you see italy and spain, all of these countries going through so much going through such hell. it's in strong communication, our professionals are dealing with it every day. so many countries but many are dealing directly and closely. we are in very good shape in terms of manufacturing at the right time. they were asking for ventilators today.
8:13 pm
they tested positive, it's a terrible thing but he's going to be great. i'm sure he's going to be totally great. they want ventilators, germany has ventilators, we are going to make a lot of ventilators. we are also going to help other countries. i want to thank everybody, i would to think great american citizens and a lot of incredible things are happening. really happening. it's too bad, we have the press conference we resigned, we signed the largest bill in history. i said think of it, 22 days ago, we had the greatest economy in the world. everything was going beautifully. the stock market hit an all-time market, over 150th time. during my presidency.
8:14 pm
the world was looking good. then we get hit by the invisible enemy and now you have countries all over the world reeling. we'll be bigger and better and stronger than we were before. we will also have a by artist in place that works, we will have broken systems, we will have incredible systems. this might happen again, hopefully it won't but if it does, we'll be able to handle it. very much more easily. i'll take a few questions. >> tell about the negotiations with general motors. what they are doing, was there a debate over cost? >> we don't want to think too much about cost when we talk about this. this is not cost. i wasn't happy where general motors built plants and other locations so much during my term but they built a lot of plants and other countries. i won't name the countries but
8:15 pm
you can imagine. i didn't go into it with a favorable fear. i was extremely unhappy with ohio, they left ohio in the middle of a boom because we had 17 companies coming in and they were leaving one plant in ohio. what happens, i became the story. not all these planes moving it but that you had one plant, they were leaving. frankly, i think that's a good place to build the ventilators but we'll see. we'll see how that works out. i wasn't too thrilled and fun without we had a deal for 40000 ventilators and all of a sudden it became six and the price became a big object. but peter is going to handle but people do a very good job. maybe they'll change but we didn't want to play games. >> two questions. one, the state quarantined and the treatments. first one, over the last 34 hours, governor in multiple states including florida, rhode island had orders for travelers,
8:16 pm
quarantine orders. they are intercepting people on highways, airports, they say the recommendation of your administration, is that true? if so -- >> i will let tony speak to that later but we are being very strong on quarantine, strong on people not leaving, especially certain states and going to other states where they have less of a problem. we are hearing constantly of people going from new york to florida and new york obviously is a hotspot. that's why we are noting the hospitals in new york and medical centers in new york. we'll let tony answer that but specifically, you have to understand that we are not playing games. >> in the dca, this morning he tweeted about it and i'm told it was coincidently not long after that tweet gm announced they reached an agreement to talk about an indiana plant which is a clean plant, it produces up to
8:17 pm
10000 a month to to be delivered in a couple of weeks. why the need after that? >> it wasn't after, it was before. we just were not getting fair with general motors. we weren't getting there. we are getting think with a lot of other companies and we have the people doing it for me. the room right here. we can talk to you later about it but we have to get these people on board. we're not looking to get into a big deal on price. we are not looking to be ripped off on price. we don't want prices to be double or triple what they should be. general motors will see what happened. now they are talking but they weren't talking the right way at the beginning. that was not right to the country. >> last night you talk, he didn't think there was a need for 40 thousand ventilators. today, if you are having them produced tens of thousands of ventilators. >> there's a chance we won't need that many. i think frankly, there's a great chance we are not going to need
8:18 pm
that many but there are a lot of other people who will need them. we have countries all over the world that are friends of ours in week will help those countries. we are in a position to do things other countries can't. so we have an interesting position, we can make them because we are going to make over 100,000 pretty quickly. we can make them. if we don't need them from a that's okay. we can help italy, the uk, boris johnson specifically. when i say how are you feeling? the first thing he said to me, we need ventilators. >> the surplus -- >> all over the world, they want them. we are in the position to make them and other countries aren't. >> first, can you follow-up on that? governor cuomo said 30 to 40000 ventilators, the expert were advising him. what are you basing your
8:19 pm
assessment that he doesn't need that? >> i think you can ask that question to deborah but their estimates are high. i hope they are high. they could be extremely high. we are doing even hospitals based on pretty high estimate, they are doing them anyway. as i told john, if we do not need them, that's wonderful. we can help a lot of great people all over the world. we can help them live but i think his estimates are going to be very high. don't forget, we sent thousands of ventilators to new york. they didn't know they got them. and we sent thousands of ventilators to new york, they have a warehouse in edison new jersey, that's an interesting thing. we sent them to edison new jersey, they were in the warehouse ready to go and new york never took them. so if they knew they were there. we have to get people lined up. we are -- i'm not blaming new york. this is something that's of the magnitude that nobody's ever seen before. the federal government said -- they've done a hell of a job. we sent thousands of ventilators and they didn't know about at the time they were complaining. thousand, 2000102104000 and they
8:20 pm
were going there in large numbers. before that, many founders. we want to have so many we want more than we need because we can send them. other countries have been our friend. >> the governors are not appreciative of the federal government has done and you suggested that some of the governors are not doing everything they need to, be specific, what -- >> the state of washington, i think the governor is a failed presidential candidate. he leveled out at zero. in the polls. he's constantly tripping and i guess complaining would be a nice way of saying it. we've done a great job for the state of washington. michigan, she has no idea what's going on. all she does is say is the federal government's fault. we've taken such great care of michigan. you know the great care we've
8:21 pm
taken. if you ask the governor of new jersey, how are we doing? i think he would say great. i think, he's a democrat. governor cuomo has said, we are doing a great job. i saw the news conference with they were thinking the people of pima an army of core engineers, build a hospital in three and a half days but it's a big hospital. medical facilities in different parts of new york. governor cuomo has been appreciative but a couple people aren't. we've done a hell of a job. the government has stepped up. >> what more specifically you want the governor of washingto washington -- >> all i want them to do, very simple. i want them to be appreciative. i want them to say things that aren't true, i want them to be appreciative. we've done a great job. not talking about me, i'm talking about mike pence, the task force, fema, there's no country in the world could have
8:22 pm
done with the army corps of engineers has done and is doing. now they are going in and building literally, they are going into hotels and renovating hotels. i should be for governor studio. that should be for states to do. we have the army corps of engineers so keyed up and stocked up and they are psyched and incredible. there's no games with these people. they are in the screaming get it done. they're not sitting around taking it easy. these are workers, incredible people. i think the army corps of engineers, when somebody for political reasons, wants to blame, i view that as we make the incredible people. nobody's ever seen it. i would love to go there but with all that we are doing, we have this incredible hospital, it was supposed to be ready in three and half weeks because it's under maintenance. a maintenance contract. we were able to get it done quickly. we were able to stock it up to the top. it's leaving tomorrow at 2:00. leaving virginia, it will be in new york monday. weeks ahead of schedule.
8:23 pm
i think the media and governors should appreciate it. i have to say, the media is been pretty good the governors have been really good except for a couple. with them, it's just political. as trump? or not. we have done a job the likes of which nobody has seen. >> when they are not appreciative to me, they are not appreciative to the army corps or to fema. it's not right. these people, they are working 24 hours a day. mike pence, i don't know if he sleeps anymore. these are people should be preceded. he calls all the governors. i'm a different part type of person, except mike, don't call the governor. you're wasting your time with him. don't call the woman in michigan. it doesn't make any difference what happens. >> the governor of washington? >> if they don't treat you right, i don't fall.
8:24 pm
he looked up her pipe of person. he'll call quietly anyway. he's done a great job. >> given that bulbar americans are advised to stay at home and avoid trouble, is it necessary for you to go to virginia tomorrow? >> no but i have spirit for the country. we have doctors on that ship, we have everything. i'm not going to be jumping around in a huddle but i think it's a great sign, the president of the united states, they completed all the work in a fraction of the time. supposed to be there three and a half additional weeks and they got it done. it's in great shape and they are sending it up. it's a fair question. i feel as though leader of our country, when they can do work like they've done, they've been working all day and night, medical supplies and everything,
8:25 pm
i don't think it's the worst thing in the world, it's right down the road partly. i think it's great if i go to virginia. it's like a tiny trip. i think it's a good thing, when i go over there and i say thank you, it doesn't mean i'm going to be hugging people or shaking people's hands. i think it sends a signal when the president is able to go there and say thank you. we'll be careful. >> the stockpile of supplies for a pandemic, when you arrived as president, he said we took over an empty shelf. you've been president more than three years now, why didn't you and your administration go back? >> we did, twice. we for that price and we've been disturbing that for literally a year. next question, thank you. we've been filling it out and filling the stockpile many times. it's been filled many times. now what we are doing is something different because i
8:26 pm
think it's better. we fill it, so it comes from wherever the manufacture or whatever it is, we fill it and then we go, now what we are doing is, we have an emergency. we are think of direct. we fill it only where necessary but now we are trying to go direct. there drop it off in new york or in michigan, they drop off in virginia or wherever it may be, florida is getting a lot of things. we are finding it's a much better system but we've filled and stockpiled many times. we ended up with an empty shelf. >> spoke to the chinese president yesterday, in terms of data, do you know how they got the number of cases to go down? >> had a great conversation with the president of china last night. it was fascinating to me. they have a whole, it's a different kind of world. a different form of government to put it mildly. we talked for a long time. we talked at least an hour, i
8:27 pm
guess. one of the things i was asking him, when did you notice this was happening? we talked about the whole concept. how did it happen and when? was the most effective, was it the fact that distance, was distanced the best thing? we talked about everything. they are ahead of us from a standpoint of time. happened there, long before it happened here. by the way, it would have happened here sooner had we not kept those people out, the chinese people coming over the country. had we not kept them out. we talked about it because he's had additional experience of having been much earlier. he's developed incredible theories and all of that information is coming over here, a lot of it has already come. we collect data. we are going to learn a lot from
8:28 pm
with the chinese went through. our relationship with china is very good. we talked about the trade agreement also but this whole invisible enemy has taken over the world. nobody cares about trade or anything. you want to talk about trade? they immediately get back to this. we really, we talked about trade, they are starting to buy heavily from the farmers under the agreement, this trade deal we just sent. honestly, he, me, all of us, everybody is talking. he turned on the television and read the papers, it's all about this. it should be mostly about this. we tried to talk about how are you doing with buying from the promise? they have started very large fine, as you probably have read but what we focused on was this. i also said, how have you done with yours and respect to vaccines? we discussed that. they are doing like we are, they are working on a very hard.
8:29 pm
we asked interesting things happen determined. we'll see what happens. we talked a lot about vaccines and possible cures, how could without be? we'll see. by the way, we have various things happening right now having to do with cures and vaccines. i think we are doing very well. this vaccine thing, i think we are very close. as tony will tell you, it's a long testing process. we'll see what happened. >> suspending tariffs. >> we are taking into billions of dollars, he never did ask me. >> on monday, the end of the 15 days, you expect you will simply renew the guidelines? you expect there could be some modification? >> i'll be sitting on with this brilliant woman and brilliant man, and lots of people who work with them and we'll be sitting
8:30 pm
down on monday or maybe tuesday depending on which is the best. we'll make that determination. obviously we are not doing it for new york. new york is just coming into this heated situation, we are putting a lot of things in new york right now that nobody thought whatever be felt. a lot of things are happening in new york. we are talking about possibly other parts of the country, or maybe we won't do that because maybe the advice of a lot of talented people who do this for a living from a they won't want to do that. they won't want to express anything. these are the kind of things will be talking about. >> for people at home wondering how long are we going to have to live like this, what advice do you have? >> it depends. want to flatten the curve, we want to see the curve heading down in the other direction at a minimum. we have to talk about areas of the country that have not been affected or had a small effect.
8:31 pm
we'll see. i want to get open as soon as possible. i want it to be long but we also want it to open safe. otherwise, what did we do? [inaudible question] i hope not, i hope it appears faster than that. i really think the people of our country have done a great job. last night, i was watching and i'm looking down madison avenue and fifth avenue, john, there were no people in the street. normally you would be able to see the sidewalk. it would be like rush hour. i'm looking at it and i'm saying, i can't believe it, there are no cars, no people. it was one person on fifth avenue walking down the street. i've never seen that before. i guess maybe 1:00 a.m., 4:00 a.m. maybe but i've never seen that before. the people have been incredible. you talk about distancing, social distancing, we don't have
8:32 pm
a law, we're not going to put them in jail and yet, i think two things. number one, they are afraid. number two, they really are wanting to win this. >> are to ask you about united airlines, they are worried there's not enough money. by the end of the period, end of september with restrictions and layoffs that they could see that, i was wondering what your reaction is and what they might do. >> we have brilliant people, a tremendous amount of money. we have brilliant people that i'm taking from "wall street" with secretary mnuchin, was done an incredible job. i'm taking from "wall street". people i've known that you always know, top people in the world. they want money, who knows.
8:33 pm
peanuts. compared to what they would normally get. taking the smartest and most brilliant people in the world and they are going to be dealing, are not going to hire somebody who's never done it. that's a political person or anything else. we are getting the most brilliant financial minds in the world. i know all of them. you know all of them. you read about all of them. there probably the smartest of them all but the fact is, we are taking these brilliant people and they'll deal with united and they want to help. the airline has been a tough business. it's always been a tough business. tough to make money with. it's got every barrier you can have. but for our country, it's very important. we have to take care of our country. we need the airlines to stay. it's also big for jobs. we will be able to handle united and delta and all of it. we have plenty of money.
8:34 pm
will be have large chunks depending on what these great geniuses decide along with executives of the different companies? it's possible. they'll make a better deal on the phone for the taxpayer will end up with a big chunk of companies. boeing, until a year ago, the greatest company in the world. to me, there wasn't anything close. 1% of gdp, 1% of gdp, it was flawless and than it had this whole thing with the virus. so boeing will probably need a hand. we will bring going back to help. we have the smartest people in the world. we have a smartest, i've been don't even know if you know that, people like larry fink we are talking to and this black rock and the smartest people. they all want to do it. this is to them, they love this country. we are speaking to people like
8:35 pm
that they'll be able to work it out. >> my question is, there's tension between bring them back, is affecting people's jobs. i'm wondering if you are going to intervene? >> i think it's the same thing. bringing back people to help. to me, and i'm okay with this, it's the same thing. i'm in a much different position than if i were an investor or something. i want to bring it back, i want to preserve their jobs but i also want to preserve airlines because of preserving what's left, the travel and leisure industry which is perhaps the largest industry in our current country. you added up the hotels and traveling into the planes and everything else, the largest industry in our country. saving the airlines is very important. they are all doing well. the airlines were doing record business a month before today.
8:36 pm
even 22 days to be exact. when we first started seeing real signs of problems. record levels. last year, a record year. biggest in the history of the airlines. everyone was doing well. i was residing on the successful economy in the history of the world. now we have to rebuild it. i think we will have an absolute incredible fourth quarter. maybe slightly after that, to be honest but it's going to be in that time. as soon as we get ready this. i think we will have an explosion upward. it's going to be incredible. >> issued some of the fewest restrictions on the country, the highest centage of elderly in the country. do you believe the government is handling this while? >> is a very talented guy. he's a very good government,
8:37 pm
everyone loves him. he doing a fantastic job for florida. he was not happy with the people coming down from new york. flying down from new york, he had steak with less problems. florida has been doing well incentive testing, testing has shown much better, talk to you about that later but he is very unhappy with the people coming down from new york. i understand that. ron is a tough guy, a great governor and i have tremendous confidence in him, he had the beach situation and resolved that. he will get off resolved. >> yesterday, your message for governor,. [inaudible] how do you influence that? >> you have to speak louder. >> how do you get people high
8:38 pm
risk areas to low risk areas? >> we have very, very strong restrictions. you're right, i don't like it. we are seeing how it works, the data is coming in monday and tuesday we will see how it loo looks. we go to a tougher level, we can. but that causes other problems. we are going to see and we will be reporting fact very shortly after my meetings with tony, deborah and others we are going to be meeting with. we are going to report back to the media. >> millions of schools across the country, including my own, bored and restless. my kids want to crawl on the walls and crime on the walls and my wife is about to lose it. many watching right now, what would you say to the kids right now?
8:39 pm
elementary school, high school, would you say? >> are say you are a citizen in the greatest country anywhere in the world. we were attacked like nothing has happened, possibly since 1917. many, many years ago. we were attacked. we are winning the battle and we are going to win the war and it's not going to take hopefully that much longer but we have to win the work. i would say they have a duty to sit back, watch, behave, wash their hands, stay in the apartment with mom and dad, they look like they are lucky to have you as a father. just learn from it but the young people have been tremendous. some of them very happy not to go to school. you understand that, perhaps. but we have literally had no problem. again, they should sit back and
8:40 pm
be proud of our country. we are doing it for them. ultimately, we are doing it for them. more than anything else, if you think about it. the other thing that's nice, the one thing that has come up, i learned this, it was reaffirmed by president xi jinping last night, thinking people are incredible. they are attacked successfully attacked to a much lesser extent by this pandemic, this disease. whatever they want to call it. you can call it a term, a flu, a virus. you can call it many different names. the children do very well, almost thing on earth they are, the better they do. i guess the immune system is sadly, for some of us, their immune system is stronger, i'm very happy about that but they have been attacked, the spanish flu, if you look at the h1n1, if you look at the swine flu, which
8:41 pm
was not so long ago, attacked very strongly young children, kids, middle-aged people. age is a factor here. your children should be in good shape. >> when is the risk acceptable to allow that back in their lives? >> we are going to be guided, you have real strong, the media generally, i'm impressed, a lot of the media has been fair. i'm not used to fair treatment in the media. i don't know how to handle it but the media has been overall, the media has been ready fair. some cannot, i could tell you who but what is the point? the media has been fair. we are all in a problem together and we are going to win.
8:42 pm
>> thank you. new york is the epicenter of the outbreak, yesterday, kellyanne conway pointed out -- i'm wondering if you agree. i'm wondering if you could talk about the city preventing the businesses, do you think it's fair? what are your thoughts? >> that's not happening. i think they vote as as. that's all right but that's not happening. i didn't know him well. he and i are opposite persuasions. we would go at it but i don't know if we ever spoke other than to say hello a couple of times. down at the memorial center time ago so i've spoken to him a lot but mayor de blasio and we've really had incredibly productive discussions.
8:43 pm
i got him a lot of people, we found him medical center, he's asked for elmhurst hospital, i know elmhurst hospital 30s well. i grew up there, you talk about epicenter, especially the epicenter of the epicenter. that's really something. we talked about, it's very close to where i grew up. being so familiar with it, it was so incredible. refrigerated trucks coming in, i've never seen anything like it. i've spoken with mayor de blasio a lot in the last week, with helped him, i think a lot. i've gotten to like him. i get along with him very well. he wants us to do certain things and we've produced. today i spoke with him with the secretary of defense and we had a great conversation and we are
8:44 pm
helping him get some of the things he needs. he's very happy but we were able to do for him today. he's like us, he's working very hard. i can't say anything bad about mayor de blasio. my relationship with him over the last couple weeks has been excellent. we've done a great job for him, too. >> there's been a lot of talk about ventilators in ppe and that kind of thing but what about hospital capacity? are you prepared. >> great question. we are increasing capacities -- right. we are adding on to the army corps of engineers, this is a big job and we are doing in many states, not just new york and california. gavin newsom has been terrific. the governor of california, we are getting along really well and working hard. the hospital ship, the other hospital ship into they are incredible. it just arrived in los angeles,
8:45 pm
fully stocked but gavin newsom has been really good and so many of the governors have been good. governors that i've been fighting with about different things for a long time, fires in this case and the border and all sorts of things. here we are, getting along very well. i appreciate his nice words, i really do. and the people listening, appreciate it. >> hospital capacity and beds -- [inaudible] >> we just started this. we were just notified. some of the governors asked us to build hospitals through extension through hospitals and things and normally, it's normally through local government, going to cities and extending a hospital thoughts existing but we are doing it now because we are equipped to do it. we have incredible people.
8:46 pm
we are expanding hospitals, building portable hospitals, not only java center where you have four plus four medical centers but we are doing it in new jersey, governor murphy and other states, we are doing it in california. we are doing some in the state of washington despite the fact that i'm not appreciative of the way the governor speaks. we are doing it in a lot of different locations and we are doing a lot of expansions, we are also taking over buildings and the city will grow in or the state usually will go in and take over a building and we go in and equip it and make it show it's now hospital functioning. we are doing a lot of that. again, this is normally done by governors and give it to the city to do it. you bring into the points. we are doing a lot of that and they are doing a great job. mostly done by the army corps of engineers and fema. >> you and your team have had
8:47 pm
classified briefings for a while now, with a governors included in the briefings? you would have the information first. >> a long time ago, but we've had briefings. as i know it, the governors have also had many briefings. >> this was coming -- >> i think we knew for a while but if you look, i was the first one to say to china and i have great respect for china, i will tell you that. i was the first one when they have the problem to say you can't come in. i was a long time ago. >> the question of ventilators, i understand you have a questi question, governor cuomo came 21 days -- >> we are going to have more, we are manufacturing a lot of them now. we are accumulating a lot, we are taking a lot through the a act. we are taking them.
8:48 pm
we are going to have a short period of time, peter is doing along with counter people, really talented people. it's very impressive actually. if for some reason you're going to need even more, we are going to be prepared. as an example, we've given out thousands and thousands, which i think you'll know, we accumulated thousands. but we -- i think of a stockpile, over 10000. the reason we don't want to distribute that is for exactly what you're saying. if there's a mad rush in new york or louisiana or someplace else, we don't want to have given out all of those unit ventilators and fan in those sections, we give them to iowa but they didn't have a problem in iowa. or idaho, lots of different places. now we have to try to get them back which is never easy today. i'm saying this, we are prepared for things that nobody has any idea that we'd be prepared.
8:49 pm
when i took this over, it was an empty box. we didn't have testing or anything. we had a broken system there, a broken system in the stockpile, a lot of broken systems. i'm not just blaming president obama. he will long before that but all affairs to the former president, none of them but i think like this could happen. we have right now, 10000 ventilators in stockpile. we are ready to go with the ventilators. what we don't want, where week distribute the ventilators like in new york and they didn't need them or they didn't know or didn't use them. if we need them in new york, we will have plenty. we are getting a lot of ventilators in the next short period of time. we went to all of the companies, i read their names. we went to all of those companies, they are going to go, i would say round-the-clock. is that right? they are going around the clock. >> is not fast enough?
8:50 pm
>> let's put it this way. we've distributed thousands and thousands already. normally, these should be brought by states. none of them brought by governors. i don't want to say they were unprepared but nobody was prepared for this. what we have done, nobody can even imagine. by the way, and had governors tell me, including democrat governors, they said we can't believe you've been able to do this. he go to other countries and were not competing for estate we've had a couple of cases where states and i said specifically, i heard about and pulled back, immediately the price goes way down and they buy it but we are competing against many countries because many countries need the ventilators. that's why i want to build more. >> the question i had, are you able to guarantee to assure these states and hospitals that everybody who needs a ventilator
8:51 pm
get a ventilator? >> i think we are in good shape. this is a pandemic, the likes of which nobody has seen before. i think we are in great shape. i think number one, we've distributed ventilators -- it's a big deal. we've distributed vast numbers of ventilators and we are prepared to do this. i think we are in great shape. i hope that is the case. i hope we will have leftovers to help other people in other countries. >> will they be able to get ventilators? >> don't be a cutie pie. nobody's ever done what we have done. nobody has done what we have done. everything i took over was a mess. it broken country in so many ways. we had a bad testing system. a bad stockpile system. we had nothing in the stockpile system. i wouldn't tell me, being a wise guy, go ahead. >> you signed a bill today, it
8:52 pm
could choke an entire herd of horses. before you had a chance to put pen to paper, people were talking about the need for phase four. >> it may be something where we will have to help states. the states have been hurt very badly. the beautiful thing about our country, 6.2 truly because it is 2.2 plus four. $6.2 trillion and we can handle that easily. because of who we are, what we are, it's our money, our, we are the ones, it's our currency. we can handle it. i watched the other day, he said we will do whatever we have to do. the priority is life and safety and fan the economy.
8:53 pm
>> it seems like -- >> i tell them it's your life, but it's your safety and if we need more time, they're not going to have a problem waiting at all. it's life, safety and it's our country. but we have to take care of people. at the same time, we want them to get out. our country was built on that. but we have to make sure it's safe. everyone knows that. one more question. >> the world health organization in your own officials have used any treatment, should be scientifically demonstrated to be effective but at the same time, he said as an example, it could used as a cure very soon. >> hydroxychloroquine which is supposed to be the better of the
8:54 pm
two, it seems to have some good parts. abner cuomo, we've given him 10000 units, it's a lot. they are testing it. it's a malaria drug and also a drug for arthritis. it's phenomenal for those, especially for malaria but we are going to find out soon. i hope it works. there are signs that it could do well. they are testing 10000 units, it's a lot. i want to think the fda because they approved it immediately. it was already up for a different purpose. so hydroxychloroquine is a powerful drug for certain things. it's a very successful drug. there is reason to believe it could be successful here. the reason i disagree with you,
8:55 pm
and i think tony would disagree with me, the reason i disagree is that we have a pandemic. we have people dying now. if we are going to go into labs and test all of this for a long time, we can test it on people right now who are in serious trouble who are dying. if it works, we've done a great thing. if it doesn't work, we tried. but this is not something that's going to kill people. so we can go in and test or we could take our time. when i was with the fda, they indicated that we will start working on it right away and it could take a year. what you mean a year? we need tonight. we don't have a tonight, i want to test it immediately because it's on the market in a different form. so we know that. from a safety standpoint, we know about. we are talking about giving it to people who are in many cases, they are dying. so we want to do it that way. we got right to try approach. for 44 years or more, they
8:56 pm
couldn't get it approved. the best labs, the best doctors. now if somebody is terminally ill we think we have something that's going to work, we can use it. they can use it and i'll tell you what, when this is over, you've got to do a story. we've had tremendous results. >> can i ask you something about "wall street journal"? the trump administration plans to suspend for three, true or not? >> it's not even talked to me about that. fake news. they have not even talked to me. they are talking about -- the only one i've heard that from, china pays 25% interest on $250 billion worth of product that they send. that's a lot. everybody keeps saying you need to suspend the tariff. the answer, president xi jinping brought it up last night. it's fake news. tell the "wall street journal". the "wall street journal" does a lot of fake news.
8:57 pm
i want to thank the american public and all of the people that have helped so much and we are going to give the podium to vice president fence, who's been incredible. he's tired and if he's not answering questions like he should, we have great reason because he hasn't slept in about four weeks. i want to thank him because he has dedicated, he's a dedicated person. long before this. but the job he has done is fantastic. i want to thank mike and all the people in the task force. fema and army corporation, everybody. you've been fantastic. thank you all very much. >> good evening, everyone. thank you, mr. president. white house coronavirus task force and today we continue at
