switch flips. >> two minutes out the door opens. >> you get that one minute out call. pete: yo you know? >> yeah, it's go time. pete: what goes through your head, you think about the whole mission, i can'. >> i know when i go out the mission is all i'm thinking about, what i have to do to protect my brothers to the right and left of me, before the mission, you have to put iferg oueverything out of your head, y family all in the back of the mind, you cannot compromise your brother's life. >> like orientation on the ground, when building is my team hitting and how to we get there. everything changes, you get dropped off wrong spot go over it. >> what could go wrong, will go wrong.

>> including anything that get you killed, even nothing. pete: how do you plan for people that are rigged to blow themselves. >> you plan to get injured probably. that is part of the courageous part of what they do. you go out every night knowing you are facing a. imminent threat, you have to call audibles on target, and make game changing play. pete: you -- i want to go to sports analogy of a locker room but you leaving locker room you throw balls and strikes. >> the stakes are higher. pete: you accept them, you were talking about with suicide vest on target. >> we train how to deal with a guy with a suicide vest, in the end there are risks that are

taken. pete: the guys who pound their chest the most from the enemy, propaganda videos, with the barrel of a rifle of an american special operator are they cowardly or do they fight. >> leaders are really good at sending others to their death, because it does not affect them, they think if they can send them to martyr themselves, they get a piece of it but to their own lives, they are cowards, even mid level leaders. >> a lot of the work that our guys did in rural afghanistan, you know against hard-core taliban, they were good. they were good. they put up a hell of a fight, you know. and i have a lot -- >> there are elements that you come up, you have respect there are harden fighters. >> yes, in afghanistan mainly.

community saying you are not that disciplined any more, what do you say. >> that is wrong. there is no culture problem or ethics problem in the seal community, we're some of the most professional individuals fighting for this nation. i to think there are certain entities like "new york times" and cnn who report on any little negative thing they can find on the seal community, they put this out there and then people in the community, mistakes are made, it has been going on sinces beginning of the military, there is no cull rur e ethics problem. pete: it rolls down is that a cycel that happens? >> i believe so. then you know you have certain leader who come out that statement saying, we have a problem, then their only

solution is to do uniform and grooming standards. you are not really bringing any solutions. pete: hair cuts? >> the answer was like room inspections and hair cuts and uniforms, all that will do is lower moral and hurt recruiting. some were doing bad stuff, there is no excuse but instead of blasting it out to media, handle it internally, there is a way to did it, there are a couple bad eggs that make the community look bad, i don't know the culture of doing it. maybe people got complie compla. pete: they brought a seal team home early. >> then fired command master chief that i went through seal training with, almost 30-year mark, what does it do to him

decide to concoct the story that you know -- when you live with individuals for two years, there are certain personalities that do not get along, that happens in every deployment. there are always personality issues, these guys took it too far, made up a story it try to ruin my representation. and when ncis got involved it went off the rails. pete: not like the tv show. >> not at all. >> part of the problem. >.>> what does that do to moral, you spend 19 years fighting, for your country, at a moment's notice, they can turn on you, you are in the brig. >> scariest thing is the effect it has on pull operators -- actual operators right now

serving overseas, they watch what happened to me, whole knee-jerk react, guilty until proven innocence, i don't want them second guessing themselves when they need to pull that trigger. >> a marine that is worried about stepping is a landmine, and you think, will i be in trouble if i shoot back, that is risking lives, for rules of engagement, for someone typing them up there should be someone firing at them while they type it, they will realize it is scary. >> people that are making policies and decisions are not in gun fire go gunfights every night, i have seen young rangers get killed because of that, we send young men to go knock down a door get shot it is insanely unfortunate, politics and war is a scary thing. pete: on other side of the break
