on. your reaction what is going on? >> glad to be here. things have dramatically changed from the border a year ago. this authority and announcement they made and current authority the cpb and exercising at border comes from title 42. it is all based on public health and safety measures. so it allows agents to quickly return people back to mexico after they cross the border illegally under this title 42 authority. then other people who have criminal record or children that have alone, they have to be processed in the traditional way. so this helps both the agents, helps keep them safe and helps the interactions come down right, so that is 90% less active at the border this week than it was a year ago. this title 42 has been really important for us to gain control of the border because when people get here, they can't be successfully related into the united states, more of them will refuse to try. they won't come as much in such

a volume. elizabeth: you know it is interesting too what you just said because here's what else is going on, south of the border you can't trust the numbers on the covid outbreak. mexico says it has 51,000 covid-19. but the government believes it is eight times more than the official account. we see that happening in central america. we're seeing numbers are coming in. are you worried, are border officials worried about a second wave many coulding into the united states from illegal border crossers? >> that is why it is important for them to keep that authority. you saw the announcement yesterday, that non-essential travel across the border is also been suspended. only trade and necessary items coming across. and so, understanding what is happening in the region, both at the local level, public health officials in mexico, their counterparts at hhs and dhs are

monitoring that situation but it is important for cpb to continue to% its authority. that will be fewer cases that make it into the united states or even attempt to try, if they can't be successful. so it bears watching. that's why we, all of the agreements that we have to bring people back home, the repatriations to central america, into mexico is all coordinated with the government. so that must continue to keep us all safe. elizabeth: has number of illegal border crossers, we saw the number, it plummeted to 16,000, 16,000 in april. that is fraction of what has been apprehended in the past. is that true. >> i can't hear anything. elizabeth: sorry. can you hear me now, ron? can you hear me now? okay what we're going to do now, we'll watch retired i.c.e. acting director tom homan. he was on our show last night. he addressed the democrats

criticizing the border patrol. he is saying no, they're wrong. the border patrol actually is doing humane, they are humanely treating illegal border crossers in detention facilities during the time of the covid-19 outbreak. watch tom homan. >> if there is a situation where someone crossing coming across that border and they need medical help they're not turning them back around to mexico. the humanity still there the border patrol, men and women of border patrol saved over 4,000 lives last year. that doesn't change. that doesn't go away. the humanitarian response is still there. elizabeth: ron, i think we got you back. i don't know if you heard tom homan. he is saying the border guys, the border patrol is being really humanitarian in dealing with the covid outbreak in the detention facilities. what are you seeing? >> here is what tom knows, i agree with what he said, no one does more to protect people on the border than the border patrol. vast amount of resources. they saved 4,000 lives last year helping people in that
