"lou dobbs tonight" starts -- ♪ ♪ lou: good evening, everybody. our high energy president today continuing the trump whirlwind tour of the country. president trump today celebrating as well the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote in this country and at the same time he pardoned susan b. anthony for her 1873 crime of voting illegally. no president has ever done so, obviously, for the suffragette previous to him, and the president shaking his head at those presidential fall yours to pardon her -- failures to pardon her, wondering why it took so

long. well, he fixed that and then headed off to iowa and to arizona. in iowa president trump offering the nation's support for those who have been hit hard by the deadly storm that rolled through the state last week. president trump is right now in yuma, arizona, surveying there the construction of the border wall. he will also be accepting the endorsement from the national border patrol council which is the union of border patrol agents. he will also be giving a speech comparing his stance on all legal immigration and border security with the open border and amnesty policies of one joe biden. president trump's speech comes ahead of the beginning of the second night of the radical dems' virtual convention. former first lady michelle obama headlined day one, and she gave a rip-snorting, divisive, pre-recorded speech that included lies about president trump throwing kids in cages.

it was a lie that even the left-wing national media couldn't defend. the associated press pointed out the cages the former first lady referred to were, in fact, border facilities. quote: built during the obama/biden administration to house children at the border. end quote. and president trump, as you might suspect, didn't shy from his criticism of michelle obama either. here's what he had to say in the white house today during that centennial celebration of the women's right to vote. >> she should have have made the speech live, which she didn't do, she taped it. and it was not only taped, it was taped a long time ago because she didn't even mention the vice presidential candidate in the speech. and, you know, she gets these fawning reviews, if you gave a real review, it wouldn't be so phony. i thought it was a very divisive speech and, frankly, i wouldn't even be here if it wasn't for barack obama.

i wouldn't be in the white house except for barack obama. because they did a bad job, biden and obama. and if they did a good job, i wouldn't be here. lou: president trump's, well, rival, joe biden, facing increasing pressure tonight from the radical left. here is biden making pro-police comments during a pre-recorded discussion with the chief of houston's police department. >> this is a watershed moment, and we can't lose this moment. we have got to have action at the national level that we actually use the death of george floyd and others to actually make policing, take it to next level which is what everyone wants including all the good cops or that are out there that, thankfully, there are more of them than bad cops. >> most cops are good, but the fact is the bad ones have to be identified and prosecuted and out. period.

lou: the former vice president's comments enraging back lives matter marxist activists. one tweeted, quote: protesters haven't been in the streets all summer because, quote, most cops are good. do better, dems. the so-called protesters have been carrying out acts of violence, looting, arson and riots for the past three months. body cam video captured one recent explosive encounter between the leftist mob and the police in seattle. >> watch out! behind ya! guess what? i'm leaving. you guys won. lou: they won. meanwhile, police in portland say they are now looking for 25-year-old marquis love who is suspected of carrying out this brutal, sickening attack. [background sounds] lou: his attack knocking 40-year-old adam haynor unconscious who is now recovering at home from his injures. the activist district attorney mike. schmidt and just dem mayor ted wheeler faintly, ever so hesitantly condemned the attack. it is their enabling of antifa and back lives matter that has handcuffed the city's law enforcement officers. the police department even says, acknowledges they were slow to respond to is sunday's attack

because, quote, police are staying away from protesters in order to not be a flashpoint, end quote, or to be of any help to the mob's victims whatsoever. that passes for law enforcement in portland, oregon. what in the world has ever happened to the people, the good people of oregon? the democratic fools running the local government there and cities all across america are about to pay a high price for their support of black lives matter and antifa. recent polls show president trump's law and order message is far more popular. cnn even showing an 11-point jump in just the past two months while president trump's approval among people of color in battleground state rises, that of the left is sinking. and the senate intelligence committee today released the fifth and final volume of their more than three-year-hong russia investigation. the acting committee chair --

and i do mean acting -- marco rubio disclosed nothing new from the report. he says there was no russian collusion with the trump campaign, but we've known that for quite some time, haven't we? rino rubio did call, bless his heart, the fbi's role in spreading the left-wing radical dem fiction and disinformation campaign against donald trump as deeply troubling. the committee's top democrat who actually is running the committee, mark warner, said the report revealed a breathtaking level of contact between trump officials and russian government operatives. that is a rich statement coming from warner, a man who had extensive contacts in 2017 with a lobbyist for an actual russian oligarch who offered hims access to christopher steele. in one text warner said he'd like to meet privately with steele in london and, quote,

would rather not are have a paper trail. there you go. senate republicans are clearly working against president trump. there's no other way to explain the conduct of senate majority leader mitch mcconnell who would have allowed this report to be released in the middle of the democratic national convention. mcconnell, along with the likes of marco rubio, lindsey graham, richard burr, dud i mention -- did i mention mitt romney? all showing that they are part of the pop in -- of the problem in this nation and not the solution. the postmaster of the postal service says he's suspending -- ron johnson is allowing the radical dems on his committee to call dejoy to testify on friday. johnson says it's the postmaster general's chance to explain himself before he faces a,

games. how's it working out? i think this is the white house, isn't it? the how's it working out for them? not so good. lou: and the president carrying out all of his responsibilities, many, including that of commander in chief. one of the carrier strike groups that the president has ordered into the south china sea, the uss ronald reagan, is back now in the south china sea with its strike force amid heightened tensions between the united states and china. that strike group includes the reagan aircraft carrier and two destroyers, one cruiser. commander joshua fagen said the group is, quote, ready to respond to any contingencies throughout the region. last week china carried out live fire exercises nearby the region, including launching torpedoes. well, up next, president

♪ ♪ lou: don't do that. anymore. joining me now, republican house minority leader kevin mccarthy. good to have you with us, and let's turn to the postmaster general. this is quite a mess, and the left, the radical dems are trying to make as much of it as they can. it's really quite something. your thoughts about all that's unfolding including hearings in the house, the senate and mitch mcconnell apparently doesn't run the senate anymore, at least not in the interest of the

republican party or the president of the united states. >> well, there's nothing the democrats won't politicize. first the pandemic, i now they're trying the mail offices. i mean, think about it, if you listened to the convention last night, they have no message for america. is so they rely on misinformation and mailbox myths. you have now the postmaster who's actually run businesses successfully, made 'em efficient, and the democrats are complaining about things that happened during the obama administration. so the postmaster literally said decisions that he did not make, he's making sure they're stopped between now expect election. and the election. there is more than enough money in the post office to run it throughout the election. but you've got nancy pelosi who won't focus on the american economy, so you've got president trump having to take it into his own hands to care for the people or who are unemployed, to make sure our businesses stay open. but nancy will not even have a vote, she wants to politicize it

right before the republican convention. lou: well, let's politicize -- it's politicized, it is clear that she is interested in only one thing, and that is winning the election. and one can understand the motivation, but the other is absolute disregard for millions of people in this country who are dependent upon that stimulus and to simply defer it is a disaster for the radical dems. and they can't play it any differently. there is no way to spin this in any other way. >> you are right, lou. think of every time this president has worked to help the american public after china had lied to the world. remember in the first bill that he worked for the cares act. pelosi held that up for more than a week for funding for the kennedy center. or when that small business program, ppp, was working so successfully that it needed more money, she stood in front of her

refrigerator and said no to all the small business employees. now she's doing the exact same thing to everybody who's unemployed. what about liability protection for the schools or financial for the schools? she's holding it up but calling all congress back to work on something that doesn't need to happen. the post office has more than enough money to carry everything out, and the postmaster said there'll be no changes. lou: they're going to posture, the radical dems, that this is about liability for corporations and their employees coming back to work. that's, that's the way they're going to play it. what is going to be the response? because there are millions of people out there right now concerned about their health expect responsibility of corporate employers. >> the people who are most concerned are schools and small businesses. those are the ones the trial lawyers are suing. those are the ones that the

democrats and nancy pelosi are defending. in our very first bill where we tried to get liability protection for 3m to sell us more masks that were so desperately needed, nancy pelosi said no. and when you think about it, the democrats have a real china problem. they will not admit that china created this virus. they will not help us defeat it in that manner. our own fbi, i read in a newspaper, said china wants president trump to lose. why? because he's been strong against china. what we really need to do is help this president make america great again, renew the american dream, restore our way of life and rebuild the biggest economy ever before. that's why people need to go to take the house.com to make sure we retire nancy pelosi and her politicizing of every policy for the future. lou: even as, well, mitt romney, mitch mcconnell, lindsey graham are working to avoid

supporting this president and, in fact, in many cases working dead straight against him. your reaction to their, their posture. >> look, i've watched mitch mcconnell, i've worked with hum a lot of times, sitting in the room with mark meadows and and others. he's got a very strong front. the difficulty here are the rules in the senate where you've got to have 60 votes to do anything. what we really need is a house minority. go to take the house.com, retire nancy pelosi, and you know what the house would be doing? we wouldn't be voting but proxy. members of congress wouldn't get to stay home and get their paycheck. we wouldn't be coming back for politicizing manager, we'd be -- something, we'd be come back to rebuilding this economy. we'd make sure the schools were safe for the children and also for the teachers. lou: yeah. could we get a two-fer deal here, kevin? can we get rudd of pelosi -- rid of pelosi and mcconnell? would that work?

assange arrested so they could continue to carry out their plot to overthrow the president of the united states. the so-called russia collusion investigation. three years ago, in august 2017, according to the reporting of "the hill" as well, assange was interviewed by u.s. congressman dana rohrabacher. assange told the congressman that he could prove the leaked democratic party documents did not come from russia. months later, in march 2018, assange's grand jury indictment was sealed until april of 2019. soon after robert mueller released his special counsel report. mueller's report was dependent on russia's cyber crimes narrative as was obama's anti-russia narrative following the 2016 election, as was the intelligence community assessment of 2017. the only so-called evidence of

lou: -- assange, because his -- it is great to have you. it tests the bounds to go with some of the explanations we've heard for why assange has been locked up and the key thrown away and kept from prying eyes and microphones for all this time. your thoughts about that reporting and assange and husband role -- his role. >> listen, last year i put into the public scores of pages of documents showing that the justice department, a guy named david loffman, negotiated with one of assange's lawyers, and assange had agreed and was willing to take a deal where he would cooperate with authorities. and he would answer questions about the leak of the russian documents, and he would agree not to release certain information or redact certain information that he ultimately released unredacted. it was an enormous missed

opportunity, and the person who killed it? get ready, james comey, fbi director. the documents show he killed the deal. and so we missed an opportunity back in 2017 at the beginning of the trump administration to get the truth from assange and possibly to temper the release of some documents that caused grave national security harm to the united states. lou: and so where is -- and the president, you can see him wrestling with this because assange has been painted in the darkest of colors as an evil and bad guy. but as with most absolutes, this one has some frayed edges and considerable gray around it. your thoughts. >> well, listen, the fbi and the intelligence community deal with bad guys all the time. if we need information, if we want the truth, he's the sort of guy we could go to and cut a deal. maybe there's a plea deal to be

had. maybe there's an immunity deal to be had. so far there hasn't been the will of the intelligence community, the fbi, the justice department to complete that deal. they hate him. they publicly call him an end hu of the state. but in this case, the american people may benefit from finding an answer to what really happened to the documents that wikileaks posted in 2016. where did they get anymore he knows. we should get that answer. lou: yes. well, he's not accused of capital crimes, and the fact of the matter is that the british can find him for so long. he has been shut down, for all practical purposes, a disappeared person to the american public. that is not an accident. it is not the way we conduct business in this country, or at least it once was not the way we conducted business. how do we make it right, and is

president trump the only one who can? >> yeah, listen, the president, the fbi director, chris wray, the attorney general, bill barr, can go back and reinvigorate those conversations from march of 2017 where we came very close to getting a deal with julian assange. if james comey didn't get in the way of that, we probably would have gotten answers back then. the justice department attorney clearly showed interest in trying to get him interviewed and get information. it was a major loss for the u.s. when those conversations broke down thanks to james comey. lou: and assange in that three-year period, his health as has deteriorated, we understand significantly, and at various points has been even described as life threatening. this does not seem to be a concern for the fbi and some intelligence agencies which should make it, i think, based on what we now know about the way those agencies have been led a concern for all americans who

want the truth. would you recommend the president pardon him? >> well, i'm a reporter, i try to stick to facts and not opinion or recommendations, but there are a lot of people who believe he should be pardoned, a lot of people who believe he should be prosecuted. i don't always agree with everything that julian assange did, choosing which documents to release instead of releasing them all. but he brought a lot of disclosures, and he was an inconvenient truth during the beginning of the russia investigation. mack if he gave us -- imagine if he gave us the his story in march 2017 what might have happened to the russia collusion story. lou: and now edward snowden is seeking a fair trial, is his only condition preshe e dent to surrendering himself. i'm going to ask you again for your opinion but, of course, based on facts. [laughter] >> yeah, listen, edward snowden compromised national security by

a large degree, and there are democrats and republicans alike that agree on that. the question is if you're going to pardon him or give hum a fair trial, what does the united states get in return for that, and and i don't know if snowden's put anything on the table that would make the u.s. government want to deal with hum. he was hiding in vladimir putin's clutches. he's not right now considered a friend of the united states, so i think you have to look carefully at that, the the political repercussions of a pardon could be significant. the president probably knows things that i don't. there's a definite split of opinion, no doubt about it. lou: well, i wouldn't ask you just easy questions ever, john, because -- [laughter] with your, with your mind and talent, i want to put only tough questions before you. >> thank you. lou: john solomon, thanks for providing those terrific answers. always insightful to have you with us. appreciate it. john solomon, just the justthen. up next, will establishment

haggerty, republican senate candidate from tennessee. he won his primary last week, he's also former u.s. ambassador to japan, and it is great to have you with us, bill. i want to ask you, first of all, about the sharp turn to the left. now, i'm a little confused by the democrats. they do confuse me often, but is it a sharp left or is it just a veer? i couldn't quite make up my mind after listening to the illustrious characters sanders and kasich. finish. >> well, great to be back with you, lou. i think if you hear kasich, there'll be no left turn at all, joe biden is a moderate. all you have to do is tune into exactly what you heard, and that was bernie sanders talking about what was once radical becoming maining stream in the democrat party. that is their point of view. they want to take away our health insurance, our guns, they want open borders, they want free health care to illegal immigrants. these are not mainstream ideas, certainly not the case in tennessee, i can tell you that. lou: well, in tennessee i just

want to put your bona fides, if if i may, because it's an impressive primary win that you posted. if we could just show what bill haggerty did. he won more -- if we could have that? -- won more than 50% of the vote in what was a 15-candidate field. he won 83, 83 of 95 counties. he won every single media market in tennessee, won every single grand division, period. and so congratulations on that. you're running with the president. you are putting yourself up as a proud supporter of president trump, and you're tearing it up. how do you react when you see a few wags on capitol hill saying, you know, get away from the president, you know? he won't help you at all. your thoughts. >> lou, they're missing the point.

i had the opportunity to serve front and center as ambassador to japan, to actually see leadership in place. to see real policies put in place. we divorced ourselves from the policies of the obama era. no more are we leading from behind overseas. no more are we deploying strategic nations while north korea ramps up its nuclear program. now we have programs where we're trying to put america's interests first. i worked very closely on the u.s./japan trade deal, critical for our farmers here in america. i've seen america step forward again. the world's seen that. we need worldwide leadership, and america is the leader of the world that the rest of the world is hungry e for right now, lou. i think the world needs us, america needs us as well to have a strong leader, and president trump is absolutely just that. lou: and his, talk about a proven leader, he's a historic president with less than one full term under his belt. he has already achieved a position in american history. he is one of the greatest

presidents. he's achieved more, you know, whether it's economics, foreign policy, rebuilding the military, the lowest unemployment rates for all minorities in this country. i mean, these are staggering achievements, and the very idea that the democrats go on the air last night and try to run him down with their politics of haut and division, they're not even -- of hate and division, there's not even a pretension on their part about what they are. >> could you imagine if democrat policies had been in place, if hillary clinton had won? our economy would be in a full-on recession right now. a depression, i should say. president trump has put us back on track to have the most significant economy in our history, and as you say, lou, he's been able to touch every demographic group and lift us up. also from the stand point of china, we've talked about in this before, finally we have a leader in president trump that's willing to stand up to china,

who wants to leave this party. more people would like to withdraw or quit this party. well, to help us better understand her thoughts and what is happening there, dr. michael pillsbury, director of the center for chinese strategy at the hudson institute. mike, this is remarkable, her speaking out just as everyone from real estate magnates to other professors are being arrested, and to this point vanished within china. she has remarkable courage to speak out like this, does she not? >> she does, lou. and she's a very important person. we hope to host her at the hudson institute in washington d.c. she gave a long interview to the guardian where she made a number of very important points. one that 70% of the communist party of china -- that's about 60 million people -- want reforms, do not like the shu jinping dictatorship, do not like this president for life deal and having the chinese

constitution ignored. so she also talked about xi jinping's role in the coronavirus and how it got away from him. so this is devastating, to have this kind of comment come from a real senior insider at the central committee party school. she sounds, frankly, a little bit like president trump or secretary pompeo in their criticism of the chinese communist party. lou: but let's turn to the issue of, as we've just been showing the uss ronald reagan in the south china sea with its strike group. this is, this is getting a little more serious. it's also a very impressive display of power and force in the region. what is your expectation? >> well, i think we've seen since june the duel of the carrier exercises.

the chinese are not backing down. in many ways i think this firing of torpedoes in recent days is an escalation. the reagan is based in japan, as you know, so it's coming down to the south china sea, but it's doing so according to international law that we don't seek permission to china to operate in the south china sea. at the same time as the carrier -- lou: this is basically e telling china to go to hell. this is not, not seeking permission, it's telling them to go to hell, is it not? >> i think what's more provocative than the carrier operations are the destroyers that god inside chinese-claimed territories in these features of the sea that we don't recognize that the u.n. has denied china's claim. that's the aspect of our navy operations. lou: dr. michael pillsbury, as always, we're short on time here, but we appreciate it. thanks so much.
