"lou dobbs tonight" starts -- ♪ lou: good evening, everybody. the republican national convention tonight concludes with president trump formally accepting his party's nomination. president trump to focus heavily on his vision for america during his second term and how that compares to the radical ideas and plans of china joe biden and the radical dems. in excerpts of the president's speech, he says this, quote: at no time before have voters faced a clearer choice between two parties, two visions, two philosophies or two agendas. we have spent the last four years, the president says,

reversing the damage joe biden inflicted over the last 47 years. president trump also says at the democratic convention you barely heard a word about their agenda but that's not because they don't is have one, it's because their agenda is the most extreme set of proposals ever put forward by a major party nominee. the republican national convention setting the perfect stage for president trump tonight to hit joe biden hard and the radical left's concerted efforts to fundamentally change the fabric of america. republicans have spent the last three days in a conversation with the american people reminding the country what makes america great, why it's worth preserving and protecting and fighting for. last night former director of national intelligence richard grenell laid out plainly how president trump always puts the interest of americans first. >> but donald trump, you always

know exactly who is in charge. because the answer is you. you're in charge. not lobbyists, not special interests, not warmongers or china sympathizers or globalization that a gnattics. with donald trump -- fanatics. with donald trump and mike pence in the white house, the boss is the american people. president trump's rightly called his foreign policy america first. america first is simply the belief that politicians should focus on the equality and dignity of every american. and that this duty is fulfilled by promoting the safety wellness of the american people above all else. that's america first. lou: a number of prominent republican women also on the stage last night supporting president trump. most of them sharing personal

stories about how he helped them at work, showed them great kindness. >> during one of my most difficult times, i expected to have the support of my family. but i had more support than i knew. finish as i came out of anesthesia, one of the first calls i received was from ivanka trump. as i recovered, my phone rang again. it was president trump calling to check on me. i was blown away. here was the leader of the free world caring about my circumstance. >> he picks the toughest fights and tackles them as complex problems. he has stood by me, and he will stand up for you. >> president trump will keep america safe. president trump keep america prosperous. president trump will keep america america. lou: a number of other speakers

also targeting the radical dems and their policies, of course, policies that have failed black and other minority communities for decades. >> all over the country who media's trying to convince to conform to the same old democratic talking points. you know what that'll get you? the same old results. >> we have a democratic candidate for president who says that i'm not black i don't vote for him. now more than ever we need leaders who stand by their principles and won't compromise their values for political opportunities. >> are you going to allow the media to lie to you and ignore the so-called black lives matter organization that openly, on their web site, called for the destruction of the nuclear family? my fellow americans, our families need each other. we need black fathers in the homes with their wives and children. the future of our communities depend on it.

lou: president trump's law and order message has been featured prominently throughout this week's convention. vice president pence amplified the message in his acceptance speech last night. >> last week joe biden didn't say one word about the violence and chaos engulfing cities across this country. so let me be clear, the violation must stop whether -- the violence must stop whether in minneapolis, portland or kenosha. [applause] too many heroes have died defending our freedom to see americans strike each other down. we will have law and order on the streets of this country for every american of every race and creed and color. [cheers and applause] lou: president trump to carry the message on law and order further tonight. his campaign also says he'll be talking about the left-wing violence that plagues

democrat-run cities across america. a curfew today issued in minneapolis where looters ran through a number of downtown businesses last night. their looting sparked by the suicide of a suspected gunman. police were about to arrest him. they had nothing to do with his suicide. onlookers contributing to the chaos. the onlookers screamed the lie that police had shot the man. and as you would guess, people reacted. eleven people were arrested last night in portland, a nightly occurrence. police there declaring an unlawful assembly outside an immigration and customs enforcement building during what was the city's 91st consecutive night of unrest. portland having to deal with left-wing activists and an anarchists despite being able to respond to those calls because the police force there are record retirements, a lack of

resources, and police officers are simply exhausted. here is the city's police chief describing the challenges his department faces every day. >> i've seen as many as 80 calls holdingment we've had calls holding upwards of, you know, 20-something hours depending on the staffing. you get a shooting or something that requires a lot of resources, there's just no one to go sometimes. august has been a busy month as far as retirements too. we'll have over 50 people who will have retired in the month of august as well, and those are, you know, veteran officers who are and able to take calls and do investigations. so is, i mean, we're a lean agency. lou: lean is one word for it. it is an exhausted agency, and it has been held back from many of its duties by portland's radical dem left-wing mayor ted wheeler who has become an

absurdity and caricature across the country. he once tried to show solidarity with the left-wing mob that has plagued his city for months. he is now, now after 91 days of rioting, looting, murder as well, he is calling on his community to rise up in support of peaceful assembly, to stand up against nightly violence and destruction. this is the mayor who has enabled and has actually supported the violence that has overwhelmed portland, oregon. and by the way, in my opinion, shame on the people of portland for putting up with this disaster. the price is only now beginning to be obvious to your elected officials. what a shame. well, there's no word on how mayor wheeler expects the community to rise up. the city's district attorney says he won't be prosecuting any

rioters or looters or vandals. and in can kenosha, wisconsin, left-wing violence there, well, it was slowed down last night by the presence of national guardsmen and more than 200 federal agents dispatched by president trump. president trump allowing residents and business owners for one night to take time to assess the damage, the awful damage done by the rioters and vandals. violence erupted in that city over the police shooting of jacob blake, but facts now are emerging. and among those facts, blake's admission, blake's admission that he had a knife in his possession as he walked to the car before he resisted arrest can and and tried to -- arrest and tried to reach for, presumably, that knife. we'll find out later. police found the knife in blake's car. the left-wing national media is,

of course, trying to do its very level worst to portray violence in these cities as nothing but peaceful protest, as absurd as that sounds. in the early hours of tuesday morning, cnn ran this banner across these pictures. fiery but mostly peaceful protests after police shooting. can you get much more ignorant than that? fires burning behind the reporter and on the same night that a teenager shot and killed at least two people. msnbc trying to rebuke south dakota governor kristy noem last night. rachel maddow used seattle mayor jenny during can of all people to refute the claim. she is the same radical dem leader who described a so-called autonomous zone that had been taken over by black lives matter and anarchists in her city as,

well, making seattle the city of a summer of love. hurricane rah slammed into louisiana -- laura slammed into louisiana, parts of eastern texas overnight wiping out power for half a million people. at least four people killed in the storm. it is the strongest hurricane landfall for louisiana in 164 years. the storm is set to make a turn to the north and east, and it will take with it rain and wind through parts of the south and this weekend the northeast. let's go to correspondent jonathan serrie in lafayette, louisiana. jonathan. >> reporter: hi, lou. those four confirmed fatalities include a 14-year-old girl. all of the fay a talltieses occurred after trees fell onto residential homes. heavy winds have been causing problems far beyond the coastal areas of this state. hazmat teams have been working to contain a fire at a chemical plant in the city of west lake.

not. quote: he was a direct rebuke of actions by people including black athletes who are currently sitting out games protesting police brutality. joe biden today on msnbc seemed, well, confused about how race relations played out while he was in the white house. >> the last four years we weren't having racial riots. when they occurred, we didn't have to call on the national -- we protected federal property without hurting people. we moved in the direction that made sense. we -- and we had, we worked with police in dealing with -- look, the vast majority of police are decent and honorable women and men. but we have to deal with the real problems that exist out there and take them on. lou: the former vice president forgot something called ferguson amongst other things. in 2014 riots destroyed parts of that city after the fatal police

shooting of michael brown. missouri's governor called in the national guard to restore peace. riots occurred after a grand jury decided not to charge the police officer involved in the shooting. you'll also remember 20 a 15 riots perhaps in baltimore. the vice president obviously does not. those over the death of freddie gray while in police custody. 20 police officers were injured during those riots, hundreds of businesses destroyed. the national guard also was called in to quell the riots. the american people agree that race relations crashed in the last four years of obama and biden. in january 2012, 62% of americans viewed race relations as generally good. in may of 2016, that number plummeted all the way to 44%. joining us tonight, republican national committee chair ronna mcdaniel. ronna, great to have you with us, and congratulations on what

has been an extraordinary convention, i will say. the opening day of your convention was the best i have seen in, and i started watching pretty carefully back in 1976, so good work. your feelings about it's going and what we should expect tonight. >> well, i think what we achieved with our convention exactly what we wanted to which is we wanted to tell the stories of the policies of the trump administration through the eyes of the american people and how it has benefited them personally. and give a narrative of their stories. a business owner where the ppp loan helped her or the right to try -- or a lobsterman from maine or a dairy farmer from wisconsin. and these are people in their own words saying we are so much better off because of president trump. and we know that these are people who have been forgotten by the democrat party. so while they had hollywood

celebrities and elites, we are the party of the real american people, and president trump going to continue that message tonight as he delivers his address and accepts the nomination for president of the united states from the republican party. lou: sharing the limelight tonight will be mitch mcconnell, and he will be standing, as it were, with the president. one hopes more than just simply optically. this is now president trump's party whether mitch mcconnell or any of the other rinos understand it, like it. it really doesn't matter. i would is have to assume that it concerns you deeply that a splintered party between the rin os of the senate and the rinos of the house are going to create problems going into

november 3rd. more like will hi for them and not for the president. your thoughts about that as we await the president's acceptance speech tonight. >> i think the president has the most support among the voters of the republican party than any president in history. i see it when i'm with him, when i'm in wisconsin where i was with him last week or florida or texas. i've never seen anything like it, lou. even in new york. the party is 100% behind president trump. so the ones that aren't with him, these angry few, they're not republicans anymore. let's start there. and number two, the media gives them outsized attention. they're nobodies. nobody wants to hear from them anymore. but the people of this country love this president, and he has expanded our party. it's not just republicans anymore. it's independents. i heard a democrat call in to c-span this week, he said i'm leaving the democrat party, and i'm voting for president trump. he has expanded our party

because he cares about real people and their problems, and he is fighting for them every single day. lou: and the influence of the chamber of commerce which has abandoned any pretense whatsoever, tom donohue, its leader, has gone absolutely mad with power and has gotten so big for his britches that there is no containing him. but i understand reliably that he is not receiving as much money. the donors of the chamber of commerce are running from them and abandoning the chamber of commerce. and, ronna, i can't even imagine why a small business in this country, 3 million of them, would even come close to supporting what the chamber of commerce has become, the biggest business lobby in the country and all they're working for are globalist corporations, u.s. multi-nationals and wall street. it's a defining moment for the

republican party. you're now the party of the american worker, the american family and the hell with tom donohue. that a fair statement? [laughter] >> well, i'll also say we're the party of jobs. and because of the ppp loans that president trump put forward, it kept so many small businesses in place. i talked to somebody last week in michigan who said i would have have gone under. my business was going to go under. this business i had built from scratch, and because of the ppp loan, i was able to stay in business. and because of how much i'm so thankful to president trump, i'm about to open three more restaurants. this is what this president is, he's the jobs president. he's the people's president. he is the fighter, he is the trade president, the veterans' president. he's the health care president. he has come to washington, and he has said i am done with the swamp and the bureaucracy and the people who say no, and we are going to change the system, and that is why he needs four

michael goodwin. ed, let's start with you, and what does the president need toot -- to do to close the deal on what has been an extraordinary week of republican and convention? >> well, i think he absolutely will close the deal. i think he's going the give an extraordinary speech. he's prepared for it. he gave a great speech at mount rushmore, that kind of a speech. the vice president gave a great speech last night and laid it all out. it's a very different america. views of democrats and views of republicans, and i think this week clearly showed that difference. and i think the country in a very well-produced convention with ordinary people got the story told very effectively. the president just will cap that ponte, make the final sale. -- that tonight, make the final sale. lou: you mentioned the vice president. he and his wife karen pence absolutely eloquent last evening, terrific and such

powerful first lady, in melania trump and the second lady, karen pence. it's just, it was a great, a great evening. michael, your thoughts on have they done as much as one could possibly expect them to do in this, in this week? and the same question to you as well, what do you expect the president to do tonight. >> well, i agree with ed on just about everything there. i think it has been a terrific convention. i think that they've used so many people so effective hi to make points about the president, i say to smooth around the rough edges of his personality. i think that the stories, the personal stories are so important. it's hard to imagine ever going back to a regular convention where it's one long list of politicians speaking.

this, i think, has changed conventions. lou: let me ask you -- i agree with you, by the way, michael. but let me ask you this. biden, meanwhile, is in the basement, comes out for a short period to do an interview. he looked dazed for much of it. this is not going to be helpful, the counterpoint between what anyone saw of the vice president today and what they will see of president trump on that stage tonight. >> i agree with you, lou. and i think that the democrats are beginning to panic. even cnn now saying you've got, don lemon, you've got to stop the riots. it's hurting -- it's showing up in polls. not that riots are bad, they're only bad when they hurt your candidate. lou: yeah. >> that is the great contrast right now between the parties, and i think the democrats are finally waking up to that. but it may be too late because they have clearly embraced this black lives matter movement, and

how do you separate yourself from it and keep that coalition intact? lou: yeah. the radical dems, ed, is are chosen to campaign against mesh, they've chosen to campaign against americans and all that we are. have they made a fatal mistake? >> i think so. they made -- he had two interviews, the easiest, andrea mitchell and anderson cooper who both love hum, he couldn't carry the ball. kamala harris will basically be the point person, i think, the rest of the campaign and try to indict the president on these issues and fail and fail miserably. she's the most liberal member of congress. that's going to be the campaign, it's going to be her against him, and the bottom line is the country's going make the right decision and give him four more years, i think. lou: astonishing that biden would even think he could prevail from a basement. ed rollins, good to have you with us. michael goodwin, thank you,

♪ ♪ lou: joining us now, dr. mike pillsbury, director of the center for chinese strategy at the hudson institute. mike, top chinese officials in europe warning the e.u. not to get caught up in a cold war with the united states, between the united states and china. two missiles fired by the pla in the south china sea. who do they think they are and what are they playing at? >> well, they're still desperate to stop president trump's program to prevent china from dominating the world. the president has been succeeding. in europe he got the british and others to not buy huawei. in the south china sea, pompeo issued the charge that china's activities are unlawful. so china is now desperate to

strike back somehow. i call it bluster. these are not effective measures, these are signs the president's strategy is working quite well. lou: the strategy does not include retribution, it does not include in any way punishment for what they, xi jinping decided to do to this cup. the list -- to this country. the list goes on. and the idea that firm rhetoric is somehow i counterpoint to a lethal, deadly virus unking -- unleashed by the chinese communist party on the world, it just doesn't ring very strong, and it's inadequate. and this is not a time for any appearance of inadequate city on the part of a response to china or anyone else. >> i don't agree with you, lou. i think the president's going step by ten to ratchet up the pressure -- step by step. now, if you just want

belligerence for its own sake, joe biden's your guy -- lou: let me tell you something, mike, if i needed help on who i'm going to vote for, i'd ask for it, number one. number two, i know who my guy is, and it is president trump. i also know what cub -- what country i live in, and i have to tell you i don't think it's adequate for this administration to respond with these rather weak remarks that we're hearing from pompeo. they've got 360 of their 17,000 fishing vessels near the galapagos islands. we have have a strong letter to follow. this is nonsense, and it's got to stop. it has got to stop. otherwise what is going to be the result? you're the scholar here, you tell me what happens when nations don't respond in kind. >> the president's trying to be tougher, lou, but the problem is

the timing and the opposition inside an administration with a lot of obama holdovers. i agree with you 10% that the president -- 100% that the president should take stronger steps. the problem is when exactly is he going to do that? the really good news is mark esper has come around, saying really harsh things about cutting off our talks with the chinese military. this hasn't been done in 40 years. i celebrate his change of heart. slowly, we've got to get other members of the administration to join the president to stop china. i just wish biden would lose so we could get more action out of the white house. lou: how do we respond to the missiles that were fired as a clear warning to keep our carriers out of the south china sea? >> very simple, lou. we have a missile defense system that's in play. it has not been deployed yet in the area. the pentagon only recently called for guam to have missile defense, to have more missile defense on our ships in the

area. this is a budgets item that was not in the pentagon's budget the two or three yearsing ago, it belongs there now. these missiles can be hot down. china knows very clearly we don't have the missile defense in place yet. lou: why not? why not? why would we not? it's a u.s. territory. why would we not? >> if you walk down the halls of the pentagon with me, hugh, into the china office, you're going to see the same faces you saw under biden and obama. we've got to have personnel changes on china before new steps can be taken, it's that simple. lou: what do we do, dr. michael pistolling bury? what do we do? >> there's a checklist the president's got. i believe him when he tell the me and others there's more to come. he's not finished yet. he's had huge successes so far, lou, but there's plenty mored to do, and the president says he's going to do it. lou: do you think that'll be

♪ ♪ >> as acting director of national intelligence, i saw the democrats' entire case for russian collusion, and what i saw made me sick to my stomach. the obama/biden administration secretly launched a surveillance operation on the trump campaign

and silenced the many brave intelligence officials who spoke up against it. they prepresented bogus information as facts. they lied to judges. then they classified anything that undermined their case. lou: former dni ric grenell. former ambassador, acting dni ric grenell on obamagate during last night's convention speech. one of the major players in the effort to overthrow the president, james comey, is downplaying the conviction of former fbi attorney kevin clinesmith. comey says he can't imagine why clinesmith would falsify documents and that he was merely a junior lawyer. to take all of this up, a man who knows, just the news editor-in-chief, john solomon, author of "fallout."

let's start with mr. comey, john, and why has senator graham waited so long to bring him forward? he put out a cute invitation by twitter, as you know, to comey. with we know what he has done. we know his role in it. it's public knowledge. and no one is acting against him. what is going on? >> when you hear james comey's most recent words, just remember this, james comey hasn't been right about anything. he was wrong when he declared that hillary clinton shouldn't face criminal charges instead of letting the justice department do that. he was wrong hen when he stole the memos from the fbi and leaked them to the media. he was wrong when he signed his name to a nice a warrant claiming that it was accurate and verified when it was anything but verified and it was inaccurate. and he's wrong about clinesmith. this lawyer wasn't junior, he

was one of the key players in the entire process of vetting, preparing the fisas. james comey can't get his story straight, maybe that's why it's not even worth bringing him to congress. he hasn't told the truth in the past, he probably won't tell the truth in the present. there are more important witnesses that i wish senator graham would be calling, people like bill priestap, find out if they were instructed to lie, to obfuscate, to falsify evidence. somebody was directing this, and it's about time senator graham asked those people who did it. lou: and priestap, i don't know how you feel about this, but perhaps the four others who briefed the intelligence committee. we're at a strange point here, john. this is, if the doj is not going to go after these cases, not going to go after these people,

it seems to me that just because apparently they think they can't win in a left-wing d.c. court that presumably would be one of the excuses, what are we going to do? how do you punish people who perpetrated the greatest crime against this government in the history of the republic? t not just simply the worst political scandal, this is a crime against the nation. >> it was. lou: what do we do? we can't just -- >> yeah. i still think that you're going to see more accountability from john durham, and i think you will see some more criminal charges. i know they're building towards that. whether they can deliver, we'll see. it doesn't matter until a grand jury hands out the indictments, but they're move anything that direction. i was struck by something that ric grenell said last night that you just played in that great clip. he said they silenced the people who were objecting to what they were doing. i think there are a group of witnesses we have not heard

about. intelligence analysts and others whose story has been stifled by the deep state for the last three or four years that this fall we will hear from, we will find out that people were objecting to what john brennan was doing, what peter strzok was doing, what james comey was doing. that is going to be a watershed moment. and then there are law licenses of people who can be pulled. many of these fbi guys are lawyers as well. take their livelihood away from them. those are all options that are on the table, and i wouldn't be surprised if they're pursued soon. lou: yeah. there are two things that occur to me. one of them that the president has the final authority to declassify all of the documents to which ric grenell referred last night. i was struck by that when he mentioned it. and secondly, the idea that there is an entire agency that presumably has all of these documents at its command, and that's the national security, the nsa.
