11:31 am
corruption over there. it's not surprising that the guy who was convicted of killing danny pearl is being let out, now it's almost amazing he served 18 years. does highlight, david, maybe the questionability of withdraw ing so many troops from afghanistan. this was al qaeda 20 years ago. those people are still up and running, and we hate to see withdrawal of those troops incentivize al qaeda to get back in business. david: but this is probably the most infuriating part of the spending bill, but there are a lot of things in the spending bill that are infuriating and the president has been very vocal about it as i think he should be. the question is what will he do? he said the last time he was going to swallow some pork in order to get the last covid-19 bill through. he said he wasn't going to do it again. if he vetoes the spending bill at christmastime, right before an election in georgia, what happens? >> well, it probably does damage the republicans. i mean, up to this point, most
11:32 am
of the blame for the holdup on the covid bill has been on nancy pelosi. we all probably saw the other day on another cable network being pressed on why she held it up for so long and she basically became in coherent. her own caucus has been mad at her for holding it up. i think if trump goes through with this , the blame will sort of go over to the republicans exactly at the moment when, as you say in georgia, we do not want that to happen. the democrats get control of the senate, this spending bill will look like a day in the park they see no ceiling on the amount of federal spending. they're willing to go ahead with if they control the senate, david. david: and they see no end in their taxing of businesses and individuals which will probably kill the economy. all right another aspect of the swamp. part of it is this spending bill , but there's also these constant apologies by
11:33 am
politicians who violate their own dictates and are caught, of course they don't apologize until they are caught, but you wrote a whole column about it called "covid has killed the apology." what do you mean by that? >> well, you know, the apology serves a purpose in the lives of the nation and in our own lives. it sort of rights a wrong and resets a balance. that's why you issue apologies but these covid violations via politicians were coming so fast and furious, the governor of california, the french laundry followed the by the mayor of san francisco, the mayor of denver, the mayor of austin, who recorded his stay-at-home video from his vacation in mexico. they all then instantly issue these kind of paint-by-number apologies which debase the idea of an apology. they simply sort of go through the motions and it really is meaningless and i think people
11:34 am
become utterly cynical about this sort of thing and indeed the politicians themselves become cynical, david. now some of them don't even bother to apologize. nancy pelosi when she was caught getting her hair done said she was setup, muriel bowser went up to joe biden's victory party and just called it essential travel. it makes people hate the political class. david: of course the one apology we never heard is from governor cuomo about what happened with the nursing homes, the thousands of people who died as a result of his policies, directly as a result of his policies i don't think we'll ever hear an apology from that man on anything but that's another subject for another day. dan henninger have a wonderful holiday, a great christmas and happy new year. >> same to you, david. david: absolutely. well, now this. the tsa screening the most passengers in a single day since the start of the pandemic.
