reporter: mcconnell and schumer met for 30 minutes this afternoon, all schumer would say as he headed out of mcconnell's office they talked about a whole lot of issues. one thing the democrats are trying to map out right now is a strategy to dark kel everything from biden's cabinet confirmations to how they will navigate the 50-50? the senate. what committees republicans will keep control of and what committees will switch to democrat coal. how to get a vote own biden's $1.9 trillion covid relief package with a looming impeachment trial on the horizon. there is concern that a trial could delay day one priorities for biden like getting his cabinet through but senator richard blumenthal said today they can do both. >> i hesitate as a former trial lawyer to predict the amount of time of any trial but i think in a matter of less than a week certainly. matter of days. the he have primarily is that of

4:11 pm
reporter: connell, they have to take effective control of senate they still need to swear in the new democratic senators. fox news learned former vice president elect kamala harris resigned on money, she will reher replacement, former california secretary of state alex padilla and georgia senators rafael warnock and jon ossoff. they have to get through the impeachment trial and they have to work through for the american people like covid relief. president-elect biden wants them to start tackling on day one. some senate republicans key negotiators need to be a part of covid relief discussions saying biden's team has been mia. senator susan collins told reporters that no one from biden's team reached out about his covid plan saying, i have not, which surprises me, i have had two discussions with high level staffers but neither have been substantive.
4:12 pm
biden does need 10 senate republican votes to get a covid bill through but some democratic senators are encouraging him to use other ways to try to muscle legislation through, one is through reconciliation. that is what senator bernie sanders told reporters just within the last hour. he wants biden to do. connell? connell: 51 votes rather than 60. thank you, hillary vaughn on capitol hill. congress took up the first of joe biden's nominations today, the day before he takes office as president. we're especially focused on the confirmation hearing for treasury seg tear designate janet yellen who was fed chair under president obama. edward lawrence has been monitoring proceedings throughout the day. reporter: janet yellen testified to a new plan on old adage attached to democrats. she says the biden administration will spend, tax, and spend some more. yellen adds the first priority is not raising taxes but that will be coming.

4:14 pm
there is a but to that. she says we can afford to spend more money now because money is cheap with interest rates being low. yellen argues without a acting big there will be permanent scarring to the economy and when she says big, she means the $1.9 trillion relief package and then passing the next multitrillion dollar package that is a recovery package after that. back to you. connell: when she says big, she means big. you say, so that is the story with janet yellen edward. who is up next in terms of confirmation hearings, do we know? reporter: a numb i about of them. actually five hearings were going on today as we speak. we know janet yellen will come to the full senate on thursday. there will be another hearing a preliminary hearing on thursday but again five of them went today, a number of the security folks did go today. but yellen will be the first it looks like actually possibly be confirmed with a thursday morning target. connell: edward, thank you.

debate violates our core values and most enduring traditions. in america we don't insist on absolute conformity or enforce rigid orthodoxies and punitive speech codes. we just don't do that. america is not a timid nation of tame souls who need to be sheltered and protected from those with whom we disagree. that is not who we are. it will never be who we are. in 250 years in the face of every challenge, americans always summoned our face confidence and independence. these are the miraculous traits that once led millions of everyday citizens to set out across a wild continent and carve out a new life in the great west. it was the same profound love of our god-given freedom that willed our soldiers into battle and our astronauts into space.
