"the evening edit" starts now. ♪. elizabeth: welcome to the show. you're watching the fox business network. let's go at it with matthew whitaker, former acting attorney general. let's break it down, top republicans james comer, jim fox, demanding that the university of pennsylvania turn over all documents and records to show how china is funding the university and the potentially the university's biden center named after president joe biden. 10 of millions of dollars from

china came pouring in after joe biden and u penn launched the biden center in 2016. your reaction to this story? >> my reaction this looks and smells a lot like the clinton foundation where foreign countries find a loophole through fund-raising, especially political fund-raising rules, have sent money directly to benefit or to curry favor with joe biden and his now secretary of state. so i think, liz, this is something that these answers are desperately needed and we can't just have a few members of congress issuing letters. we need actually subpoenas so that penn will respond and ultimately so we can see how much money came from china in an attempt to curry favor with joe biden. elizabeth: looks like the allegation that china is trying to buy influence with the three biden families. the three house republicans they

want documents dating back when biden was vice president from 2013 to the present. let's break down the numbers. university of pennsylvania got 72 million bucks from china in the more than three years since the biden center launched in 2017 when it only got $20 million in the three years prior to launching. that is a lot of money. >> that is a lot of money and obviously the answer is the answer, they gave that money to build a relationship with joe biden and now secretary of state blinken. ultimately this is, this story, we need to know not only that the money came from china but who sent it. did it come from the government of china? did it come from oligarchs and politically powerful people in china? sort of the who will be important as how much in this case. 70 some million dollars from china to support the biden center at the university of pennsylvania is very concerning.

elizabeth: three house republicans want all documents about biden's secretary of state anthony blinken. antony blinken ran the biden center. if we see the names of doing the funding what would alarm you being, if you saw the name funds a name out of china, with would cause you great concern there? >> there are several people that have very close ties and are also billionaires in china. they have very close ties to the chinese communist party and their government. and so that would be concerning. also if it is coming from the government of china, i would be surprised that is the way they would launder the money to curry this favor with joe biden. ultimately we'll have to watch the policies of the united states of america under joe biden and his administration to see if they are different and how different they are from the trump administration. obviously president trump took a very strong stance against china in several fronts and if those

stances are loosened by the biden administration, you know, americans will have to question why the more favorable approach to china when they clearly continued to try to take advantage of the united states. elizabeth: okay. hunter biden, let's turn to hunter biden, reports are coming in he continues to hold a 10% stake in the chinese private equity firm bhr partners, despite the bidens saying he would get rid of that. president biden when he was on the campaign trail told voter and reporters in iowa no one in my family will have any business relationship with anyone relates to a foreign corporation or foreign country period, end of story. your reaction to this? >> this is going to surprise you liz, and i'm sure your viewers already know it, you often can't trust presidential candidates on the left when they make promises in iowa. as an eye want, i understand this uniquely. they come to iowa and promise all sorts of things this is too

bad. hunter biden's business relationships with the chinese and ukrainians and others around the world and the way he sold influence in his name to make money, he should have diversed by now. once his father was elected he should have divested all of his connections and investments with china and china and chinese individuals. so i would expect that he does that and if he hasn't done that, that should be another place that congress has to get answers. this is a very concerning entanglement. elizabeth: we've got president biden en's attorney general nominee, merrick garland, he is expected to face even more questions about the justice department probes into hunter biden's overseas business dealings and conflicts of interest there and how merrick garland, whether or not he will shut down the probes. he will have to answer questions about that. i would like you to listen, if you could to senator ron johnson. he is saying there is still reason to worry about all of this. watch this. >> hunter biden obviously had all kinds of foreign

entanglements, let's call them that, a vast web of connections, russia, ukraine, kazakhstan but china. and china was the one obviously most concerning because the businesses he was associated with, we just had some evidence of massive amounts of money going back and forth, potential money laundering. one group of businesses all in the name of hudson west, over $100 million worth of financial transactions. hunter biden get as diamond. you know what time mondays are used for? they're used in money laundering. involved with a individual, represented somebody who was convicted of money laundering from a chinese firm. the entanglements are vast. elizabeth: yeah the head of the, chairman who since gone missing, cefc chair gave hunter biden a diamond as payment. ron johnson, senator just said, you see that in money laundering

cases. >> you do. elizabeth: fbi is still probing certain issues related to hunter biden. your reaction to what senator johnson said? >> obviously senator johnson's investigation in the senate was important to reveal some of these money transers that i know the fbi and the department of justice are looking into. i think merrick garland will have to promise to the senate judiciary committee he will not intersphere with these investigations. and i think it would be prudent at this point in time to appoint a special counsel to protect the integrity of those investigations. i know that, for example, john durham was appointed as a special counsel to that he could not be fired before his investigation into the russian collusion origins is done. and so i would expect that a special counsel in hunt hundred's -- hunter biden's case would be appropriate. elizabeth: matthew whitaker, thank you for joining us. >> thank you, liz. we'll do it again soon. elizabeth: yes we will. just ahead we got an all-star

♪. elizabeth: okay. let's welcome to the show the money pros. we've got kaltbaum capital management president, gary kaltbaum, michael lee of michael lee strategy. gary, tell viewers what they need know getting caught in this firing range between at-home day traders giving an historic pounding to the big guns on wall street, taking out their bearish bets? >> my best advice, just understand when everything is all said and done, and everybody is yelling and screaming at each other and people are suing each other, eventually all these stocks will go back to where they came from and do not be the last one in. the swings have been wild,

gamestop, was 500 bucks in the premarket this morning. and hit a low of $110 today. and that is why i think you have like robin hood stopped trading because i think a lot of people were on margin and losing every dime they had. i think they made a big mistake. they should have taken away the margin. that is what god everybody angry. but just realize, gamestop that came from 20 and went to 500. it will be back to 20. and some of these other names that don't even have any sales, it will be a death drop when the music stops so be very, very careful. elizabeth: michael, your reaction to what gary just said. what is your take what is going on? it is pure mania, one of the financial manias in history. gamestop, amc, tootsie roll, koss, bed, bath & beyond, national beverage, american airlines who is next? what is your take on this increasingly bizarre episode? >> you know, liz, it is not that

bizarre. it has been going on tesla for a few years. it happens all the time. on much smaller scales on a daily basis. what you had is, some guys sitting at home in reddit chat boards figuring out how to gam a squeeze one much the largest hedge funds in the world. the reason the stock went from 20 to 500, because the hedge funds were way overleveraged or too speculative to run gamestop out of business. common man, plebes, unwashed masses figured out how to gamma squeeze these guys to the tune of 23 doll lals of losses in short selling. now as a result, the big guys are not allowed to lose money. that is why robinhood, td ameritrade, schwab, everyone else shut down trading in the stocks so the pros could settle the score. you had janet yellen calling all over the street yesterday trying to calm it down. take a step back. who backstopped melvin capital?

that was citadel securities. who runs citadel securities? ken griffin. very wealthy man. the same company that paid janet yellen in $10,000 in speaking fees before she became treasury secretary. people not allowed to win are winning. history the business model for hedge funds has been to take money from retail investors, not the other way around. so now as a result, these stocks floundered a little bit today because investors couldn't go in to put more cash on it this is, this is nothing new. it has happened in the commodity market. usually happens to the downside but i will touch on some of the things gary said. this is not investing. this is trading this, is trading hard and this is speculating. it is not for of the faint of heart but it is gone the way of the reddit users so. elizabeth: we hear what you're saying. gary, you know, nancy pelosi, sherrod brown, he is talking senate banking hearing,

elizabeth warren, washington is now saying that we're going to step in to review what is going on. what is washington going to do with this? can they do anything? >> people that have taken us to 27 trillion of debt all of sudden want to get involved in what the market is doing. elizabeth warren sent out a tweet earlier, how do we remedy this? we need a wealth tax. so, they're going to get their hands into this, in what way, shape or form i don't know. you know, elizabeth warren hates wall street. hates banking sector. and she is just looking for an enemy right now. i suspect there will be some people on capitol hill under oath answering some questions about this, when all it is it is a gigantic short squeeze that will end up bad when all is sad and done. it actually worked out fine. the people that were short big time lost a ton of money. others -- elizabeth: we get it. >> the hope is, people don't get caught near the highs. i'm amazed that people are upset they couldn't buy today at 480

bucks when it finished at $110. elizabeth: yeah. you know it is like a financial game of uncle, mike, right? it is not a new occupy wall street push. it is about the little guys battling the big guys who have been profiting off of them, who are crushing companies and going bearish. some of these companies had more than 100% of their shares going short. i don't want to get wonky here. explain to the viewer, you're seeing mania in a part of the market right now. what is your final word on this, mike? >> look, you know, people are blaming the retail investors for getting involved. sophisticated hedge fund like this should never, ever, ever, have something like this happen to it. they supposedly have the smartest minds in the world in their risk management departments so they can operate with far less risk in the overall market. what you're seeing in long-short equity hedge funds a bunch group think. when they unwind it gets really,

elizabeth: welcome top rnc official, attorney harmeet dhillon. break this down. good to see you again. president biden's nominee for energy secretary-general per granholm. jennifer granholm insists oil and gas jobs, quote, have to be sacrificed for clean energy jobs but watchdog groups point out when she was governor of michigan, she blew and wasted 10 of millions of dollars in taxpayer funds on energy companies, green companies, that eventually belly-flopped. what is going on here? >> well, let me start by saying that jennifer granholm is about

as qualitied for the as as cabinet secretaries. his history in michigan is awe abysmal one. she granted 10 of millions of dollars of handouts to different companies that promised to create jobs in her state that didn't create those jobs in her state. $10 million almost given to a person convicted of embezzlement. she failed on promises we'll take the failure to make it failure of for the whole united states. it is in line with joe biden's executive order, new version of loan the code, people are being told there will be solar powered jobs, you may note get them but jobs will be created. reality is what is happening american jobs are being eliminated and those jobs are being shipped abroad and those abroad jobs are not very good for the environment. all these components to make the

solar panels and so forth are made in third world countries whereforessed labor is common and the environmental, you know, situation is not good there either. so we're not contributing to the net improvement of the world ecology and economy through this. we are simply enriching our competitors and our enemies making america more energy dependent which is terrible for our national security. elizabeth: you know, only, you point out jennifer granholm. only like something, 2% of the 434 green energy projects met job targets when she was governor. >> that's right. elizabeth: she was criticized for not vetting, doing due diligence, throwing money away. markets making changes, general motors going full electric by 2035. we've been here before under the obama administration. tens of millions of dollars in taxpayer money wasted on green energy companies. cash for flunkers were not

properly vetted. they were not properly vetted. they went under. >> solyndra in my backyard of bay area of california. is great example. this is what happens with crony capitalism, in the system, people socially liberal, want to put solar on their homes, others do the math decides doesn't pencil out for them given age or lifestyle. in california, for example, we had top down mandate where all new building projects must be made with solar. we have a state with a huge housing shortage, that mandate is effectively deterring new building, driving up the cost, driving middle class people out of our state, not creating jobs for people, because the costs are prohibitive. not creating jobs for americans. creating jobs for people in foreign companies. this seems not very well-thought out. if i were a biden voter right now i would be very shocked and disappointed. he stood against the tide in terms of rhetoric

risa v. other candidates would not stop fracking, would not send jobs abroad, that is what he did in the first week. that will only get worse from here. a lot of big corporations manufacture components, wind and other types of energy, they kill birds and kill animals, don't do very well for the environment in other ways. they will benefit. investors will benefit. the american taxpayer and american worker will not benefit. american consumers will pay higher prices for more scarce energy in the united states. elizabeth: you know, you wonder how is the, how is it unity putting tens of thousands more unions and other workers on the unemployment line. you had john kerry lecturing oil and gas workers that they have to lose their jobs because of the pandemic. when his family has a private jet that can emites more carbon dioxide per passenger. than an average commercial airline. he saying the u.s. could zero out emissions tomorrow, but that will not make a difference

because 90% of global emissions come outside of the u.s. what is going on from here? >> that is exactly right, some components made for green energy projects. parts of the world heavily polluted, they don't come from the solar panel ferry. they come from factories abroad which emit dirty emissions around the world and make the lives of the people who live in their vicinity much more difficult, inyaw, china, these other countries don't have standards we have the in united states. woe are not the problem. even if destroyed all energy jobs in the country it would not make much of a difference to the global problems of carbon emissions which need to be handled globally. i think what the president should have done if he wants to value this, maybe have support a competitive market analysis or, sector that with very little support from the government actually provides some alternatives for people. that is not what he has done. so americans are going to suffer

you've been challenging this since the pandemic. you lost both of your in-laws. they died during the pandemic. tell us what your reaction was? >> i couldn't believe it, disbelief for all the months we've been fighting. i've been asking for accountability and answers from this governor. there hasn't been any from the mainstream media. you covered this. fox business covered this. fox news, the "new york post" but there really hasn't been any coverage from from the mainstrem media. actually they thought he was the best thing since sliced bread you know, talking about his leadership book and his poster and his emmy award, the love gov and his love life. it was puff pieces everywhere. when we had a relative that had died and there were body bags piling up outside of nursing homes in cooling vans. it was, it was a tragedy forethousands of families, liz, there is light at the end of a

very dark tunnel i think in this report, this 76-page report that says everything we've been saying from the very beginning. there was a coverup of the numbers and this governor's mandate of putting covid positive patients into nursing homes had a grave consequence. elizabeth: yeah. it was a rule he did in march. you know, his administration dismissed you in a sexist remark saying you should just stick to the weather. governor cuomo went on abc's "the view," said this talk about nursing home deaths is just political. it is just conspiracy theories. he went on cnn and msnbc saying that, quote, incompetent government does kill people. ironically he said that. ap report that 4,000 resident died in nursing homes after cuomo ordered them, nursing homes to take back recovering covid-19 patients. instead of 8600 deaths, it is more like 13,000 deaths, janice.

your reaction to that? >> i think it is more and i hope, liz, that we have an independent bipartisan investigation with subpoena power to get the governor and his health commissioner on the stand to tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth and let us have our moment as well, to tell him what he has done to our families. we want the answers but we also want accountability from this governor and administration from his health department. yes, he has bullied me. he bullied my family members. he called us a death cult. these last 10 months have been excruciating but that last report, liz? elizabeth: go ahead. finish your thought. >> no, the report today i'm hopeful is the start after bigger investigation into this governor and his administration. elizabeth: so new york taxpayers are paying the governor his

salary to call, to say that you are behaving like you're in a quote death cult? i mean that's, that's so disturbing. >> yes. elizabeth: about, the ag, excuse me, attorney general letitia james of new york state, she is a democrat. she is saying about 70% of new york state's covid-19 deaths are from people who are age 70 and older. new york republican congresswoman elise stefanik of the this is massive corruption scandal. calling for inexcusable treatment from the governor and his entire team. they have orchestrated a criminal coverup and they have blood on their hands. is husband career over? will the voters finally hear the story? >> i'm not sure, liz. it is a start. maybe people are listening because they have to. our attorney general of new york has spoken and she issued 76 pages, saying that our governor

is definitely responsible for some of those deaths. elizabeth: so where do we go from here? you mentioned earlier what you would like to see happen. can you talk a little bit more about that? >> well, i think there needs to be bipartisan support. i have had that from lawmakers on both sides. i have been to albany. i supported a bill to have an independent investigation into the nursing home issue and the total number of seniors that died but maybe it needs to be a federal investigation. you know, liz, cuomo wasn't the only governor that put into effect that mandate of putting covid positive patients in nursing homes. it happened in california and michigan, in pennsylvania and new jersey. maybe this needs to abroader investigation. why did those democratic governors decide that these nursing homes should be infected with covid patients. it makes no sense.

♪. elizabeth: okay. let's welcome back to the show "the daily caller" editorial director vince collagnese. vince, another government story you can't make up. america needed more money for pandemic, america needed more money for a pandemic, and things for coronavirus. an office of a assistant hhs secretary wasted and misspent tens of millions of dollars meant for covid-19 and vaccines on routine office againsts like moving around office furniture? what is going on here? >> incredibility. this inspector general report out of hhs, indicating this agency, barred today, is the acronym for it, was responsible for, is responsible for preparing us for pandemics. specifically influenza pandemics is one of their primary dogs. ding, ding, that is what we're in right now. this is the government agency responsible for getting us

ready. what we know over the course of many am administrations, two of at least, they waste ad ton of money on other expenses that have nothing to do with preparing us for a pandemic. elizabeth: talk about the dollars. 25 million misspent in the fiscal year 2019. 518 million wasted from 2007 to 2016 fiscal years on things like news media subscriptions, you know, office expenses, you know, jobs for people who weren't even in their own office. you know, vince, this has been going on for 10 years. this has been going on for 10 years that they blew millions of dollars. so they called it, their own piggybank, their own slush fund the bank of bar today. what do you think? >> gross government abuse and corruption. that money was subscribed specifically by congress to help prepare us for the event we're in now.

when you look at this event, wondering why it is as bad as it is, why were we so unprepared, one reasons unfortunately, shockingly, grotesquely, our money abused money we sent them to get ready for this. we get this report, they're using this agency specifically as a slush fund instead of getting us ready. it is a part of a long-running yet troubling series of stories that indicate our government has failed us in a bunch of meaningful ways. elizabeth: they want more money for climate change after this? i mean they steer contracts to cronies. they did special projects they wanted had nothing to do with coronavirus vaccines or pandemics. it is such a shocking story, vince. your final word on it. so, how are you going to get accountability here? >> well congress has to stop sending money to agencies that abuse it. that is first and foremost. i would like to see congress step up here, actually hold this agency accountable.

♪ ♪ elizabeth: okay. with me now is tom homan, retired i.c.e. acting director and fox news contributor. okay, tom, it's good to see you. reports coming in that president joe biden is considering an

executive order to phase out government contracts with private immigration detention facilities. they hold more than 14,000, i think. no news yet on when that executive order's going to come in. what's your reaction to this story? >> it'd be a terrible thing. that'd be one of the worst things he could do if you compare it to everything else he's done. look, over 80% of i.c.e. detainees are in private detention, and there's a reason for that. these companies do it better, and they do it cheaper than the federal government can do. if anybody goes to the i.c.e..gov web site, these companies have the highest detention standards in the industry. i'll compare these companies and their detention standards to any state or federal or local jail in the country or in the world. it's the highest detention standards. a lot of taxpayersing would be upset how high these standards are. as a matter of fact, when i was i.c.e. directer, i had a lot of sheriffs would not contract with

me, would end contracts with me because they'd say your detention standards are that high. if i'm not going to do that for american citizens, why would i do it for aliens? that's what they want, liz. they don't want anybody detained. they want no detention. that's your end game. they know this will cripple i.c.e. and end detention. elizabeth: let me back up, the decision making appears to be pushed by susan rice. she's the new director of the domestic policy council. she's saying that the new executive order about, you know, the private prisons are silent on what may or may not transpire with i.c.e. facilities. she's saying that now, but it may come in. so what is the difference -- what happens if the federal government takes over these facilities in the what happens then? >> the price goes sky high. look, it's like the postal service, right? you know, i love 'em, but, you know, ups and fedex, they put 'em to shame. the private sector's very good

at this stuff. and, look, aoc and the rest of the squad and the left, they want to shut down for-profit prisons because they make a profit. well, thousands of contractors do business with the u.s. government. should we stop lockheed martin from doing business or general dynamics or boeing? no. companies do business with the government to make money. but, again, these private companies do it better, they do it cheaper, their health care is the world's finest, it's the gold standard. they provide better health care to some of these detainees than a lot of american families can afford or get -- elizabeth: democrats -- >> -- over a billion dollars on health care alone. elizabeth: okay. democrats have been pushing back saying things like there's abuse this these detention facilities, there's problems with it, these detention facilities. your reaction to that. >> most of it the is just a false narrative. look, they made a report when i was i.c.e. director, sexual abuse going on at a facility in texas. so our inspector general went in, the i.g. went in, couldn't

find anything. then a certain congressman got the fbi involved. they're independent. fbi found nothing. but did any media, did any congressperson come out and say we didn't find any? no. they drop a bomb and they run away. when the investigation's done, they find very little, if any, misconduct. and if there is misconduct, they're dealt with. they're fired or they're prosecuted. but, again, it's a false narrative. i had, when i was i.c.e. director, i had media, i had fox news go in there take a look for yourself, get it on camera. go in there and film. and what they found is great detention care, great medical care. these people are treated very well. griff jenkins from fox actually went to a facility and did a filming, did an entire show. the facilities are well run. elizabeth: okay. so if the federal government takes it over, will the standards drop?

>> it's going to take a long time to match the standards of the private companies. and plus, liz, you've got to build the facilities, you've got to hire the personnel. and by the time you do that, you're talking years, right? so what happens if they end private detention facilities now? right now they've got 14,000 people in custody, they defunded 31,000 beds. president biden put a moratorium on deportations. they're not going anywhere. a surge is coming to our border which means we're about to catch and release. that is what they want. the bottom line is these are future democratic voters in their eyes. elizabeth: all right. tom homan, we hear you. thanks so much for joining us, we appreciate it. >> thanks for having me. elizabeth: okay. i'm elizabeth macdonald, you've been watching "the evening edit" on fox business. thanks so much for watching. we hope you have a good evening and join us again tomorrow night. ♪
