"politico" is widely read in washington.

president trump and his team are confident of a acquit. they're confident of a trump comeback. what do you say to that? >> if you asked me a few weeks ago, i would say no chance of recovery by trump, yet he is incredibly resilient. remember what happened on january 6th? i mean that was a disaster for trump, for his white house and he was impeached again after that. yet he is here again recovering so strongly and what was clear from the hearing today on capitol hill is that democrats are now very fearful of him becoming someone who runs against them again and could even win. elizabeth: you know, trump's message is still getting out there even without a twitter account. people are talking to "politico" saying you know is going to do it. basically there is a grassroots movement that says it is about getting the economy reopened and people back to work. you know, even trump supporters

don't like what happened with the capitol riots. they say it is totally wrong. it is unacceptable. it should never happen again but it is interesting that "politico" is now reporting that trump intentionally kept a low profile. he expects to change that once the trial wraps up. he will gradually reemerge from public by the spring. even go after gopers he could primary. what do you say to that story? >> he better be careful. trump has recovered. i thought he would be a pariah politically at this point, given the events of january 6th, the break-in around riot in the capitol but he is not. he is recovered some but is a bush anites who he has lost. there are a lot of independent voters he has lost. he has a ways to go to pick up where he needs to be to really challenge democratic presidential candidates if he faces one, around that long. he needs to be a long distance

runner here politically over the next few years. he can't just say whatever he wants. he needs to clean up his act some. he needs to be a little less sharp and and maybe even a little nicer. elizabeth: you know, former republican senator jeff flake is saying that trump, that he is saying trump fever will break but he is saying it's not happening anytime soon. that is happening really slowly. what do you say to former senator jeff flake there? that trump is not, that is not going away. >> well, you know, trumpism is whatever trump does, trump has been, was very successful. and what did he do, liz? he adopted the conservative republican agenda. you know, you cut taxes, you get rid of foreign policy issues like treaty with iran and you

move the american embassy in israel to jerusalem, and a whole bunch of those things. and they helped trump a lot and will continue to. but remember, remember what went wrong particularly in the last, the months of his campaign. he didn't have an agenda that he talked about for a second term. he was just not a very good candidate. we know he can be one but he wasn't then. i think trump thought that the only person he needs to take advice from is himself and the truth is, there are some people that can help him. elizabeth: yeah. it is interesting that is going to change. listen to senator john kennedy's take what happened today rather is happening with senate impeachment. watch this. >> the president trump i think would be fair to say is unconventional and he has said things that i disagreed with

both in substance and the way he said them but he does have the right to say them. i didn't agree, it wasn't my preferred way of expressing one's self when senator schumer on the steps of the supreme court threatened supreme court justices. i didn't agree with congresswoman waters when she threatened appointees of the trump administration. i don't think they ought to be impeached. i think under the first amendment they have a right to say that. and i think the president's lawyers don't know for sure, but i think they will make that point. elizabeth: your reaction to that? should be pointed out that people were killed in the capitol riots and dozens injured. he is saying free speech part of the fight. your reaction? >> i understand that, what he is talking about. i like senator kennedy. i think he is a force for good for the republican party for sure. but there is one thing that president or now former president trump has to do and,

and that is stop alienating people like suburbanites and people in the suburbs and stop, this is the most important, liz, stop talking about how the election in 2020 was stolen from him. that verdict has been registered. look i know republicans who say, well look, we know the democrats cheated but we just can't find the evidence. well, i think it is probably because it's not there. but if trump talks about that over and over and over again as he has in recent months, it is going to hurt him. he won't advance. elizabeth: yeah. you know, this is all happening as the labor force is hurting. two million moms are out of the labor force have to stay home to watch their children. they're single moms because of you know, being in longdown. so there is a grass roots push that leading -- needs somebody to be an advocate for them. there is talk the president can

do that. we hear what you're saying, these are important issues what is happening with the senate trial and with the election but you know, you know, others are saying it's time to move on. sort of like washington is locked in the second stage of political grief, wanting to still stay angry and beat each other up. it is terrible what happened but the country wants to move on, fred. >> i've lived in washington my whole life. i can't move on. i'm staying here. but i agree, there are good reasons for people being unhappy with washington and the way some administrations and others were better but that's not going to change. i don't think even talking about that helps a whole lot. look, what's amazing to me over the last month is that trump, who i thought was dead in the water politically and really had no future and unfortunately i wrote that, the, but he does.

♪. elizabeth: let's welcome attorney and republican strategist ford o'connell. ford, it is so great to have you back on. ford, it feels like we're at a turning point. we talk about that but now we've got massachusetts, new york, iowa, among the states moving to reopen, relaxing restrictions. at least 15 states seeing big fights to reopen. what is your take what is happening right now? >> as someone who had a bad case of covid in the summer, i applaud the mayors and governors planting to reopen. we need to stop the cycle of fear. it is hurting our schools and hope and we have to reopen now. i think that is the best move for the entire country frankly.

elizabeth: what americans feel like, they don't like the idea, people in elected office can ad hoc on the fly, make rules that control their lives, shut down their businesses. they're sick of it, especially paying their salaries with their taxes. i like reaction governor of iowa, keeping economy open, rates down to 3%. listen to governor kim reynolds. >> iowans know how to stay responsible and take care of their customers. because we had our economy open and economy working we're coming out of covid in strong position. our unemployment rate dropped 11% to 3.1%. we finished last fiscal year, with budget balance, cash reserves full. we have a surplus. instead of talking about taxes or asking for a bailout from washington, d.c., we're

investing in education in broadband. we're talking about cutting taxes. that is what you do when you have a balance targeted approach. you trust the people that you serve. it has been a year. they know what they're doing. we will continue to open up in a safe and responsible manner. elizabeth: okay. contrast that with hair salons, barbershops, hardware stores, small business restaurants. small business bars and pubs, being shut down and california, new york, new jersey, pennsylvania, also we're seeing it happening in the south, in the upper midwest and the upper part of the west in oregon and seattle. people are done. they're sick of it, ford. >> no, they are absolutely sick of it. i tip my hat to governor kim reynolds. she did it right. she followed the true science. didn't follow fear. tried to minimize death and suffering, maximizing openness.

the residents of iowa are grateful for what she did. iowa one of only seven states that never had a stay at home lockdown order but other bigger states like my home state of florida, governor desantis had phased reopening in time. in my county, collier county, 93.7% of students are in school. we have to break the cycle of fear. let people know it is all right to go back to work and go back to school. elizabeth: so many states are still under lockdowns. you know, we've got so many people, good people, great americans, they're trying to do their job, put food on their tables for their families. look at the media. they see rioters taking to the u.s. streets. we've seen antifa, black lives matter, everybody understands what they're fighting for and what it is about but these are turning violent. they're turning destructive. ford, the british government is even appointing an independent advisor investigate far left extremists infiltrating and committing political violence

and destruction in protests run by black lives matter and other groups as well. let's listen to, reform uk party leader nigel farage on this. he has a warning here. let's listen. >> this black lives matter movement is a dangerous, marxist organization hell-bent on anarchy we need to wake up, get some facts into our heads, understand what it is we're fighting. the main agenda of the black lives movement and black lives matters is the defunding of the police force. that's right. they have want to effectively close down the established police force in the united states of america. elizabeth: ford, your reaction? >> good for nigel farage. i wish the u.s. would follow suit. there is difference between equality under the law and blm organization, antifa weren't on destruction. unfortunately the media turned a

tampa. this happened before the super bowl. who do you think tried to do that. >> we'll find out. the secret service around the fbi will find out but the real question, liz, is not will they find them, why did it happen? this is ridiculous. a lack of attention to security. people not taking this stuff seriously. instead of being a water facility, suppose it was gas facility or nuclear reactor? remember somebody hacked into the iranian nuclear program and accelerated a centrifuge to the point it blew up. that was hacking. we have to take this seriously. i know the fbi will be able to find out with the secret service who did it but the big issue how do we prevent it in the future. that is where focus should really be. elizabeth: senator marco rubio saying this is a matter of national security. let's break down what happened. a water plant operator in oldsmar, florida, literally

watched, a computer broke into the computers, took control of the computer mouse, directed the mouse to the software that controls water treatment and then boosted, increased the amount of sodium hydroxide from 100 parts per million to more than 11,000 parts per million. if that comes out of a shower head, that will burn you. that is lye. water plant operator was not there to catch it. they say the redundancies in the system would catch the change in ph level but this is dangerous stuff, danny. who do you think? >> i can't tell but without pointing fingers, a lot of jobs i've done were inside jobs. one case i did, the computer technician was a hacker and caused a lot of mischief. i'm not saying it happened here, probably didn't. that is one thing we have to be concerned about, who is running your computers? who is your computer technician? 99 times out of 100 they're great people and do a good job.

sometimes they're nefarious. or former employees. someone has a grudge against the company. thatthat is a good place to stat looking also. elizabeth: yeah. there is the other thing, danny, there is a push for clean energy. everybody gets that. we're talking about clean energy, climate change activists trying to change systems in 17 states plus the district of columbia. they're moving to try to change the systems and the infrastructure. that accounts for nearly half of u.s. gdp and more than 40% of the population. are we ready for this given something like that happening in this town? i mean in oldsmar? are we ready for this overhaul? >> oh, we're not, definitely we're not. there needs to be more heightened sense of awareness in the fact these things happen. people are in denial. generally they're in denial any way. especially this particular area. one thing, people remember, people are not careful with passwords and not careful with access. they don't cancel access for

somebody leaves. bottom line, you're going to be, you're going to be tested. if you're in the infrastructure business or the energy business, they're coming after you have. almost like a red cell thing. i believe these companies, these institutions should trite to penetrate their own computers to see which are their vulnerabilities are. until we get serious about this, something bad will happen. elizabeth: you know, we've been say staying on this. senator joe manchin, 14 states attorneys general saying to president biden, don't cancel the keystone pipeline. >> yes. elizabeth: that will affect jobs. buried in that executive order is another directive president biden put in there to knock out the prior order by president trump to protect the nation's bulk power supply. they will look at that for 90 days, look at what president trump did. but president trump was saying, listen, we've got countries like china trying to put its own power technology equipment into our power grid. so why even, why even review

doing enough to stop potential pay-to-play conflicts of interest involving the president's brother frank. what do you think about that? >> i think he is exactly right about that. what needs to happen is a public promise, and pledge, for example, his brother, he will not be representing any clients or any individuals in their, who have interests before the federal government. because if he did, you know, what federal agency is going to potentially say no to the brother of the president of the united states? basically he needs to swear off any kind of business that involves the executive branch of the federal government. elizabeth: frank biden consults with a law firm down in florida. let's listen to walter shah here. >> joe biden coming in as a reformer. having pledged there would be a real distance between him and his family. already we've seen frank biden's law firm touting his connection

to the firm and noting that he is a relative of the president's. you know i think it is not enough for the white house to tell us they have a mysterious process of some sort. i would like them to tell us what that process is and all throw it is not required by the rules, we're in a period when we're rebuilding from ethical failures. so i would like to hear the president say, that he has asked his brother to stop touting the connections to the white house. elizabeth: it is not just frank biden. it is hunter biden. it's president biden's other brother. it is other family connections too, that is being called biden incorporated. your reaction to that? >> well, unfortunately all of that is right. we saw exactly the same kind of what i consider to be misbehavior when joe biden was the vice president. we had his son being paid lots of money and getting involved with corporations in both china

and the ukraine and what was, seemed pretty clearly was going on there was those companies were seeking political allies and friends in the united states by making sure that members of joe biden's families were profiting and trying to use that relationship. and what we need are promises from the members of joe biden's family, not just the white house. that in fact they're not going to repeat that kind of behavior while joe biden is the president. so far we've not gotten that. elizabeth: one source tell me, it feels like they need an ethics czar on the biden pham hi alone. ethics experts are raising concerns about president biden's surgeon brother-in-law working with the federal government on vaccine distribution. back up. biden administration will keep john durham the special counsel

on the trump trump-russia probe. they will keep david weiss, looking into hunter biden's potential money laundering and tax evasion. we have hunter biden's attorney chris clark who is friends with nicholas mcquaid, worked with him at the same law firm. nicholas mcquaid is overseeing the doj criminal division that is overseeing the hunter biden probe? are there hundred of thousands of attorneys biden administration could have picked for that job? why nicholas mcquaid? >> at minimum he needs to recuse himself as far as any decisions over that criminal investigation. the biden administration said they will not interfere with either of those two investigations, what we actually need a promise and pledge from the incoming nominee to be the new attorney general, merrick garland, that he promised that he will not interfere with

either of those investigations. i don't think we've heard that from him yet. elizabeth: hunter biden still owning a 10% stake in a chinese equity fund. >> right. elizabeth: hunter biden flew on air force two with then vice president biden to china, got 1 1/2 billion dollars from the chinese government that invested in big time energy projects that compete with the u.s. talking about chinese petroleum and also military technology applications. companies that do that. also you know, facial recognition companies. chinese nuclear, chinese general nuclear power corps. they had officials who were sanctioned there, trying to steal u.s. secrets. u.s. energy secrets. this keeps getting deeper around deeper, hans? >> well it does, what that history unfortunately shows is that members of the president's family were willing to profit at

prominent think tank, carnegie endowment took as much as two million dollars in recent years from a chinese businessman with close ties to the chinese communist party? what is going on? >> through a chinese company as well as this businessman involved with a chinese investment firm. he has taken in, his organization, the carnegie endowment has taken upwards of two million dollars over the last few years in donations and the chinese communist party and the, operations that it has around the world, they're very specific and deliberative with the way they distribute money. the goal is always to advance the goals of the communist party around to try to influence operations in the united states and around the world. when a lot of chinese money coming in, it is always done with the blessing of the chinese communist party. it is always for a goal. we don't know precisely what that goal, we do know this guy, william burns, is about to run the most powerful intelligence

agency on the planet. china is our chief adversary and is incredibly adept and aggressive when it comes to espionage against the united states. this is a deeply important story. elizabeth: sew william burns is going to appear before a senate intelligence for a confirmation hearing. are they going to dig into this? because i think you guys over there at "the daily caller" have also been looking into how this chinese influence letters got appointed to the board of trustees for the carnegie endowment when william burns was running it, and william burns took congressional staffers on a junket to china? can you talk more about that? >> that's right. they did. so you're right, that businessman, as part of the investment firm he did join the carnegie endowment. he is on the board. this is not just influence reason donating money. the reason they added him to the board because he is a big donor. that is how things work in washington. there was a congressional junket

william burns led, he led a bunch of congressional staffers toe china, wined and dined and taken on tour of facilities that you don't get access toes in you have the blessing of chinese communist party. some people on the trip relayed to the "daily caller." it is an amazing story, it how much trust the communist party has in terms of william burns in terms of their investment and the close link he has with china. it's a gigantic deal. think about the number of politicians who have been compromised by china. eric swalwell, recently a spy going after him because he is on the house intelligence committee. dianne feinstein was spied on for years by a chinese spy. she is on the senate intelligence committee. china clearly interested in getting access to people with power in the united states. boy, william burns will have a lot of it if he gets confirmed. elizabeth: looks like china is pretty smart targeting who is going to be powerful in government, in future governments. you know, you contrast that with what is happening right now in

great britain. great britain is cracking down on dozens of act academics who helped advise china on how to develop weapons of mass destruction. these academics face jail time. contrast what is going on in great britain with what is happening in america, vince? >> as you're saying that, think of all the academics who have been arrested and charged in the united states by the trump administration, working with china, not doing it unwittingly. in fact the harvard chemistry department was not only taking american taxpayer money to do his research. he was taking chinese money to send his research to the communist party in china. that was busted, allegation by justice department. he was busted for that. there are a lot of stories on that, be on guard of people working against american interests here in the united states because they think they can make a quick buck from the

your reaction to this story? >> i'm happy to see the judge rule in favor of common sense. what has been signaled with the memos that came out of the 20th, basically an open border unless you're an active terrorist, convicted criminal or just somebody coming over the border. we saw reports of you know, people coming, already in the pipeline. signal has been received and it appears we're going back to the future in the sense we'll go back to the wild surges on the border of families and children coming alone. that is what has been forecast in where these policies are right now. the only thing that cpb, only tool they still have the title 42 authority, directly repatriate people during the pandemic. elizabeth: so why pause deportations when relations with mexico over, you know, illegal border crossing, the policies there are deteriorating? we now have more than four dozen house republicans sending a letter to president biden saying stop with the ideology.

stop with the political games. this is serious stuff happening at the border. if you're pausing deportations for criminal illegals and illegals charged with say things like drunk driving assault, drug crimes, money laundering, property crimes, fraud and tax crimes, are you saying none of that is a public safety threat by pausing deportations? what's the messaging here? tell that to the angel moms and angel dads who lost loved ones to duis. what is the messaging here, sir? >> that is exactly right. the messaging that i'm hearing, signals that i see we're going soft on immigration enforcement in the interior of the united states and we're going soft on the border. partly because of resources, you mentioned the ideology. makes them feel good who will not arrest people that are already convicts. that is not the the way immigration law is written. that is not immigration law exercised by immigration officers. i feel bad for the workforce. they know what is about to

happen. if the surges continue, we'll be back with where we were in 2018, with all the misery, death and destruction at the border. dhs workforce and families have to put up with all of this. this will be laid at their feet. you remember in 2008 2018, visited border around blamed cpb and i.c.e. and came back to washington and did what? nothing. the framework allows people to game the system, fail to remove them in the country, you will get more of this misery. elizabeth: i talked to so many border authorities and they keep saying the same stubborn lack of curiosity and lack of interest, lack of care about what the border patrol is being confronted with daily is shocking what is going on with the democrat party. listen, this isn't about immigration. this is about crime. that is the messaging. that is what the democrat party has to take up to.

they used to be about crime 10 years ago. they used to be for stronger border security. but now it is just doesn't seem, seems like it just doesn't matter. so when you see time and again you know, drug deals involving fentanyl or heroin, and you know, illegal aliens charged with those crimes. now they will be released. so everybody is supposed to be okay with that, ron. we're all supposed to okay with that. >> it's crazy. 90% of everybody that i.c.e. removed last year had a criminal conviction or were criminally charged in the united states. for serious crimes. you think about all the ms-13. you think about all the people that are selling drugs. and then where are these crimes occurring? they're occurring in the very immigrant neighborhoods these people will find themselves in. this isn't a good, this is not a good policy. coming into the country is illegal. if you get arrested by a local authority and turned over to i.c.e., you should be removed. there should not be exceptions. that is the way the law is written. that is the way it has been most
