"the evening edit" starts right now. ♪. elizabeth: we begin tonight with republican senator ron johnson is back with us. we're so excited to see you, senator. okay, you heard the open. what is with senator joe manchin saying up to seven democrats are going to oppose biden's 28% tax hike on companies? is this thing dead on arrival? >> i sure hope so because increasing the corporate tax rate is not going to do anything for pulling us out of the covid recovery and long-term economic prosperity and opportunity for americans. look what we did in 2017. back then the corporate tax collected was a little under $300 billion.

in 2019 before the covid recession hit it was about $230 billion. so we lost about the $70 billion worth of revenue. i think we probably would have made that all up with a strong economy but the biden administration is talking about spending thousands of billions of dollars on all these boondoggles. so again you have to keep the business, the american business tax rate compared competitive with the world. that is what we did in 2017. elizabeth: right. senator, joe biden claims he wants to protect medicare and obamacare but joe biden and the first lady reportedly avoided paying half a million dollars in payroll taxes by diverting $13 million from book deals and speeches into tax shelters. indiana republican jim banks, who is the chair of the gop study committee, saying do you, president biden intend to undo your hypocrisy to pay funds to the american people. when you saw that number, that is pretty high, half a million bucks they avoided. >> it is.

again part and parcel we see from some democrats will utilize the tax code, probably did it legally but then criticize others for doing the exact same thing t speaks to the insanity of our tax code. the people can utilize it that way but what i'm even more concerned about in terms of the biden's taxes they made $16 million of income since he left the vice-presidency but only reported about $3.2 million. did i say billion? 16 million in income and 3.2 million in assets. where did all the money go? that came from real good reporting on the part of john solomon. my question is, where did all that $16 million go? elizabeth: that's a good question. you know, the other thing too, tax pros said there is no reason for the bidens to use tax shelters like s-corporations other than to avoid payroll taxes. even biden's top aide neera tanden said these are quote loopholes. you're right, when he left office the bidens earned double

what they earned the on bind 19 years combined. where did the money go, do you think. >> i have no idea. our tax code is insane. treats different types of income differently which i don't think we should. in terms of medicare tax, the payroll tax in general is capped at a certain level because it is really designed, for example, social security is designed to pay for your retirement plan. medicare there is no cap. so, you know, i have never particularly agreed with that aspect of it. if you need to raise money for these programs, let's do it in a simple rational tax system. we don't have that right now. elizabeth: yeah. but you and senator grassley, you did a story, a report, rather, deep dive into the biden family history. they like s-corps. they like to use off-balance sheet shell companies to bury cash they get from overseas. delaware is known for all of this. they like to do all of this with real estate infrastructure deals that the biden family has done in romania, iraq, costa rica. working with russia, china, you've seen this kind of

activity in the past, right? >> absolutely. again i'm concerned about the complex web of foreign entanglements particularly within china but really all over the world. so you simply can't trace it. when you're trying to hide income the way you do it you set up corporation after corporation after corporation. you layer these things. for example, one of the corporations they used was called hudson west. there are eight or nine different hudson west corporations. you don't know who owns them. you don't know where the money is flowing back and forge. that is how you launder money, you have kinds of different transactions which makes it very difficult for anybody to catch, to uncover what is all going on. elizabeth: yeah. senator, you and your senator chuck grassley's report said hunter biden opened up the family to counterintelligence and extortion. hunter biden's new book is out tomorrow. he is claiming everything he did was ethical. indicating in email he used off-balance sheet corps to avoid

$615 billion, not 2 and a quarter trillion. democrat senator quo joe manchin said seven democrat senators are opposing this. what do you make of this? >> i think they recognize this is way beyond anything mainstream america is looking at. this will be difficult for themsell even with the friends in left-wing media. up 2.3% proposal, 6%, less than 6% goes to roads and bridges. about 115 billion. you can skinny up even more to roads, bridges, infrastructure. it is about funding a radical left socialist agenda that includes defunding the police, implementing the green new deal, open borders and closing our schools. do you know that the $2.3 trillion proposal, $2.3 trillion is four times what it cost to build the interstate highway system from coast to coast. i think they realize that people will start to scrutinize this

proposal. elizabeth: that's really interesting but you know president biden said he wants to ram it through without any republican votes and then he is trying to topspin it that this, you know, he can't -- he now saying it will be still be bipartisan even though he wants to ram it through without republican votes. all the campaign talk of unity, looks like the president had no intention of unity. mod i can't think moderate democrats are balking at this. >> saying about structure. regard letters of the proposal it is my way or the highway. this guy campaigned as moderate. he is radical, being advised by alexandria ocasio-cortez and other socialists that are in the house as well as bernie sanders. elizabeth: yep. >> the chair of his budget committee. they want to use this to pass a massive tax bill that is the largest since 1942. they want to tell people that this is only going to apply to

people earning $400,000 or more. elizabeth this, is a huge middle, tax increase and by the way, just look what he has done to everyone on the lower economic ladder? with his energy policies, with his, since the end of january we have gas climbing. elizabeth: yeah. but i see that too. gas prices are going up. look at pete buttigieg, the transportation secretary. he was caught on camera driving his car, his suv up to work and then basically, getting a bicycle out of the back of the car in order to make it look like he is bicycling to his job in order to appear that he is green and you know, progressive and liberal. i mean this is insanity. this is, this is cuckoo. what do you think? >> it shows you, elizabeth, they have no limit. there is no limit to their hypocrisy. whether creating shell corporation after shell corporation, taking advantage of

governor desantis bringing in publix. "60 minutes" was implying it is a pay-to-play. even democrats in the state of florida are pushing back on this story. you have mayor dave kerner, democrat from palm beach county. he called the report, not just they got it wrong or made a mistake, intentionally false, unquote. so what we're seeing now more and more is people pushing back on this from the other party which is a very rare thing we see these days saying, "60 minutes" not only got it wrong, they purposely misled, 17, 8 million viewers on this one. elizabeth: you're right, what they're saying. seniors are at risk of getting covid than the rest of the population. publix is pushing back on this too. to your point the outgoing florida emergency management director, and mayor kerner, said publix was recommended because the other pharmacies were not ready to start vaccinations that local florida officials went to

publix, not the other way around because publix was ready to go before the state pharmacies on this? >> precisely. as you said, it is, more prevalent, i don't if you been there it florida. been many times in my life. can't go without a couple blocks without a publix. like starbucks in new york here, right? but what i want to know is, okay, you're going to do this piece, this hit piece on desantis. when will you get around, "60 minutes," doing any reporterring own andrew cuomo the way he handled covid particularly with nursing homes and putting covid-19 positive patients back into facilities when you had the uss comfort which president trump supplied or javits center? "60 minutes" didn't want to get around to this one. we saw this during the campaign. lesley stahl interview where president trump had to beg stahl to look into the hunter biden allegations. she said, quote, it can't be

verified. can't put it on the air. it is verified now. "60 minutes" has more track record being unfortunately biased. this is the number one broadcast news magazine in the country, on for 50 years. you thought you could trust those guys but apparently that is not the case anymore. elizabeth: we hear you, joe, publix is blasting "60 minutes" being deceptive and wrong. governor desantis is also blasting "60 minutes" for a deceptive segment. let's show you the part that was not shown to viewers. let's watch governor desantis explain what was going on in florida. watch this. >> first of all, when we did the, the first pharmacies that had it were cvs and walgreen's. they had a long-term care mission. so they were going to the honk term care facilities. they got vaccine in the middle of december. they have started going to the long-term care facilities the third week of december to do ltcs. that was their mission. that was very important and we trusted them to do that. as we got into january, we wanted to expand the distribution points.

so yes, you had the counties, you had some drive-through sites, you had hospitals doing a lot but we wanted to get it into the communities more. we reached out to other retail pharmacies, publix, walmart. obviously cvs and walgreens had to finish that mission. we'll use you as soon as you're done for that. pour the publix they were the first one to raise their hands saying they were ready to go. elizabeth: david, first ready to go. first reporting that publix is not in poor neighborhoods. there are 1600 pharmacies throughout the state giving out the vaccination for free. so the reporting needs to be done there about what really is going on with the vaccination effort in florida because it looks ex"60 minutes," their story is falling apart right now? >> right. you look at numbers, elizabeth, since early january, cases among those over 65 in the state of florida are down 80%. the vaccine distribution going through places like publix, using the private sector, is

playbook. certainly "the washington post" gave joe biden four pinocchios. even cnn admitted they're misleading people and telling lies. when you have that network around that paper exposing democrats you know this is a problem. this is the way the democrats want to do it. they want to misinform people, lie to people. this made voting easier in the state of georgia and cheating harder. this i applaud the state legislature for what they did. they improved voting regulations in the state of georgia, with 75% of georgians said we needed. more voter i.d. we needed better regulations. 60% of all democrats said it. 69% of african-americans agreed to that. elizabeth: you know major league baseball has hypocrisy too. you note a photo i.d. to pick up tickets at will call. we have 35 states, dozens of countries that have voter i.d., including mexico, canada,

france. the supreme court backed voter i.d. georgia is basically tightening the rules that were dramatically loosened during the 2020 election that led to widespread chaos. reporter phil wegmann, he asked white house press secretary jen psaki, okay, four major league boycotting atlanta, georgia, are you going to boycott the 2022 winter olympics in china? she didn't like that question. >> no, i can understand why. the hip pock express sy here with major league baseball to begin with. here is major league baseball trying to punish a state that makes it easier to vote, expands voting yet here in the same week that they removed the all-star game from the state of georgia they signed a contract with a communist-china backed company. the hypocrisy there is just ridiculous. look at communist china, what they're doing. they are slamming hong kong.

sense absorb the "new york post" story what was on the laptop. now you have cnn's brian stelter saying the hunter biden book is a story of our time? i mean, i'm not sure what he is talking about because we're talking about a serious fbi probe and doj probe into potential tax evasion and money laundering involving hunter biden's laptop. he signed a receipt for it, hunter biden did. beau biden foundation sticker was on it. it had emails on it. has embarrassing photos on it showing lots ever bad things allegedly and raw influence peddling by the biden family. joe biden's campaign was saying this is russian disinformation inside of that laptop. so they're effectively saying it is yeah, his laptop. >> a couple of things there. i have mean the media at this point basically become the boy who cried putin when it comes to anything russia. if it's a negative story about trump it is russia doing it. he is colluding with russia.

movement. the people in the united states are under siege. they have an expectation of police as it relates to the social contract. so when we see what is happening in portland, it is just a reflection of that defund police movement and you have officers that are ready to retire as a result of the municipalityies inability to effectuate sound policies for public safety. elizabeth: yeah, we've got 20 cities moving to defund the police. 840 million cut out of budgets there. after the killing of george floyd in police custody in minn police. police officers in portland, oregon, giving blistering exit interviews. one cop said quote, portland city council they're raging idiots in addition to being stupid. the mayor and city council ignore actual fact the on crime and policing in favor of radical leftist and anarchist fantasy. the police command and city

council they're arrogantly incompetent and cowardly. your word on that. blistering words. >> when we got back to last year the federal government sent a series of assistance measures such as federal agents to assist in the anarchy plaguing portland however the mayor and city council were diametric opposed to assistance of federal law enforcement. that set forth a bad precedent. we clearly saw the localized police were incapable of managing the disturbances that were plaguing that community. so the officers understand that. now the quote, up quote, boots on the ground needed help and didn't receive it and it was a result of the failed policies of the city council. >> we got it. portland, as you point out has been the epicenter of destruction tiff riots. it now has the largest jump in homicides in 26 years. 55 killings in 2020. half of those killings are people of color and poor people.

we're talking about victims raging from eight months old to 71 years old. we just now have breaking news that a suspect finally has been caught. this suspect, lieutenant, was, is now accused of firebombing multiple bothers in portland, oregon, causing tens of thousands of dollars in damages. he is a 24-year-old. including the attempted murder of police officers. this is a in riots of last year. what is taking so long? >> well the problem is disenfranchised communities, more so specific to the african-american and latino communities are under siege. this is where we see the epic portions of violence. the legislators are not recognizing and identifieding that these communities need help. they are bowing to the sentiment of the radical left which is subsequent i denigrating their quality of life. elizabeth: lieutenant darrin

juveniles to just rush the southern border and have agents that are being moved from one position in order to take care of these individuals, it creates gaps in other areas. so that's what we have now, it's just a huge domino effect. the drugs are coming in because they understand that, you know, there's limited resources in some areas. now you have these, you know, the individuals that were on the terrorist watch list, and that's just what they caught, to be honest. elizabeth: right. >> i've been preaching up and down that my biggest concern is the amount of gotaways that are coming through our southern border. they continue to go up, the numbers are going up astronomically, i talked to some of the individuals looking at those numbers, and they're saying that the tucson sector is up to, you know, over 45,000 gotaways. so when you start looking at the individuals that have been apprehended and people on terrorist watch lists, it should raise huge red flags of what is coming across and was not being apprehended.

that should be a big concern -- elizabeth: we're seeing afghanistan, pakistan, iran, iraq, also homeowners, businesses and ranchers at the border suffer property damage. the texas attorney general, ken paxton, says it's something like billions of dollars in damages. they're breaking into homes, setting property on fire, robbing. let's watch the mayor of texas border town eagle pass. watch this. >> we have two stations, north and south station, and combine they're a catching about 300 illegal immigrants every day. they are being processed, vetted and, you know, what affects our community is that, you know, there's residential areas within a few hundred feet of the river. and so many of these individuals crossing illegally will tend to try the hide in residential neighborhoods and homes and backyards and patios. elizabeth: your reaction? >> you know, it's horrific. as someone that loss grown up

out here and, you know, was raised out here, i've seen it my entire life. and it is horrific that we have people in leadership positions, we have politicians that have been this political positions for many, many years, some of them for decades, and they haven't learned from the mistakes of the past, and they're not taking this serious. it is horrific to see that. elizabeth: yeah. we've also got a brutal drug war at the border. thousands of people have been murdered south of the border. we've got, you know, vice president kamala harris has yet to hold a press conference about the border since president biden named her the border czar and ordered her to oversee it. let's watch senator john kennedy here. watch this. >> in further evidence of what i just suggested, the president has put vice president harris in charge of trying to combat the illegal immigration. there's some confusion. she says she doesn't want it, the president says she's got to take it. but no disrespect to vice

president, i know her well, i respect her, but she believes in open borders. making her the illegal immigration czar, as i said the other day, is like making "el chapo" the drug czar. elizabeth: what do you think, sir? >> liz, we shouldn't be in the position that we're in now. but with, you know, we're here. and we need individuals that are able to come up with answers and are able to fix the problem. we've said times how do you fix it? you put more immigration judges down here on the southern border, you put asylum officers down here, and you start looking at the actual cases, you start determining what is actually an asylum case and what is not, and you have real sanctions against these individuals. you can't have a free-for-all. you can't allow the criminals to continue committing crimes and there not be any consequences. it's a domino effect. the drug dealers and the child traffickers and sex traffickers are aware of it. elizabeth: all right. art, thank you so much.
