8:01 pm
after a big jump in first quarter gdp, we headed out on friday, six and half percent, president biden is optimistic that that will continue to climb. >> international monetary fund has now estimated our economy will grow at a rate of more than 6%. that will be the fastest pace of economic growth in this country and for decades. america is moving.

moving forward. but we can't stop now. were in competition with china and other countries to win the 21st century. >> joining me now the chairman and ceo of the people's corporation, don peebles, thank you very much for joining us. our biden spending and tax proposals on individuals and business hamper growth, make us less competitive, what is your take on the spend and tax proposals we are hearing about? >> if we look at tax for example the elimination of the preferred rate for long-term capital gains will have a devastating impact on long-term investment in real estate especially rental housing for example an investment in businesses to grow and i think in the long term with stock market. it'll have the opposite effect on moving the country forward, we have to keep in mind the growth that we receive is that
8:03 pm
the state should've been on lockdown and beginning to open up. receding entrancing greater growth in that regard. i think the tax policies will have a devastating impact on the real estate industry overall. i don't think it's likely to get through congress because i think it ends up making states like california and new york very uncompetitive, the early struggling to compete with places like texas, ford, tennessee and it will be more difficult under these circumstances with increasing the federal taxes. maria: i think we have to look at the u.s. tax rate compared to the rest of the world also. a corporate rate is essential in terms of being competitive, the corporate rate that is competitive with the rest of the world is essential but what gets me is the capital gains tax increase. you talk about cap gains from 20% all the way to 43.4% for the highest earners because of the
8:04 pm
double and you have to add in the 3.8% obamacare tax. that obviously is going to dictate behavior, are you going to sell your home this year while you get a 20% cap gains or next year and have to pay 43.4% to the government. tell me what happens if that goes through? >> i think if that happens, first of all there will be a massive selloff in the real estate market this year which will ultimately have a chilling effect on value in moving value other ways. there will be a greater flight to places like florida, nevada, texas, tennessee where there's no state income tax to get these rates down. were talking about 150% increase in the basic premise that they invest in longer-term real estate is that they factor in the after-tax return on investment and to compete with
8:05 pm
development of a condo versus rental housing, investors look to protect our dollar. it will take money out of the production of rental houses which are cities like new york and others around the country need more production of rental housing. it'll have a devastating impact on that. it'll have a negative impact further digging a hole for new york city with regard to residential condo, but more importantly office buildings as well. not a good thing, i hope, i don't think it gets through as is proposed, 115% tax increase on investment income would be devastating to all sectors of business. maria: tell me about office buildings because office buildings have already seen a huge upset because of the pandemic. employees do not want to go back to walking into a big building and having to go and work rather
8:06 pm
than splitting their time working from home. will this exacerbate that, what is your take on the office in the in terms of commercial real estate right now. >> you can see tax policy and political regulatory policy having an impact to do is contrast in new york city to florida to south florida, new york city is a record amount of vacancy in the office space on being put on the market for office space, south florida for example is having a shortage of available office space, a shortage of public space, lowest members of availability in a very long time, all because of the migration, the housing market in south florida is booming and also the market, from the middle income property all the way to the election,
8:07 pm
that shift is happening because employers and entrepreneurs are migrating south and with them they bring their pulleys as well and to assume a quality of life. i think you will see in places like new york people don't want to go back to the office for a number of reasons, one reason for investing about three hours round-trip to and from the. maria: for sure in places like florida as you see firsthand, it's great to see you, thank you very much for your insights, we'll see you soon. >> thank you, good seeing you. now grading president biden first 100 days from the economy to the border to the handling of covid-19. i'll get a reaction from former president donald trump next.

maria: welcome back the biden administration criticized for mixed messages on getting america back to normal after getting maxing. i asked president trump about the on the controversial cause of johnson & johnson vaccine. >> tremendous numbers of people have been vaccinated because of what we did, january 20, they took over what we did, all to you what it's a military and it was a system of transportation
8:50 pm
in a system of getting the shots out to people like nobody has ever seen, it was a military operation, the generals did a phenomenal job, then they took it over it kept going, very simply and kept going. and that they blew it would johnson & johnson, they should've never done a pause would johnson & johnson, that was done for political reasons or they like pfizer so much, what they did with johnson & johnson was horrible, they want everybody to get a vaccine and then they do a pause which has so much publicity and has not recovered what they did was just terrible, the vaccine saved millions and millions of people throughout the world, we have the best vaccines, nobody even says they have better than what we have, we have the best in the world, everybody is trying to get them, that was all done by trump. maria: what should've been done in terms of johnson & johnson vaccine rather than taking a

pause, obviously is back on the market the fda making that decision last friday, what would you prefer to see given the blood clotting issues? >> at the time it came up there were 8 million shots and six cases which as they say far less then women's birth control pills then tylenol and almost anything, it was very minuscule, that would've put a warning on or something on that particular vaccine but i certainly would not of positive and gotten front page news all over the world and then people don't want and probably even affect the others. there's a big situation with a lot of people don't want to take the vaccine. this played right into the hands and they want me too do public service messages and everything about everybody taking the vaccine, i guess in a certain way and the father of the vaccine and less than nine

months, it was a miracle, dr. fauci said it would take 3 s something that would not be that effective because it would take so long to get. i pushed the fda like they have never been pushed before, i would it exactly say they're in love with me, this is a very bureaucratic organization, i pushed them like they've never been pushed before and that's why we have it. when they did the pause on johnson & johnson, that was a very stupid thing to do. maria: we heard from the cdc saying if you're fully vaccinated you can be indoors without a mask, you can take the mask off and the shot of president biden behind him, kamala harris, vice president nancy pelosi speaker of the house both wearing masks. what is going on, are we not getting the truth and clarity in terms of what we should be doing, the place was not even half full and they're all

wearing masks. >> it looks like he was choking last night when he was speaking. he ought to get some air, literally nancy's mask was the biggest mask i've ever seen. maria: is their strategy? >> i'm not sure if they know there's a strategy but they love the masks and everybody in the room had the vaccine and everybody was in good shape, they could've done it much differently and for joe biden to walk outside announcing of the have to wear masks outside, people knew that for a long time buddy walked outside to say you don't need masks outside, he is outside doing it and he walks out in a mask. look, this country has gotta get their schools back, it's gotta get the cities open, in all cases democrat, when you look at

florida, texas and various other places, they had a much relaxed policy and yet they had far fewer deaths relatively speaking, farmer economic success, new york has been so badly hurt, it's gonna take a long time to recover. california was so badly hurt, these places some of the places has never been any place that was tougher than michigan and michigan had an outbreak, the likes of which you haven't seen since the very beginning. , it is very sad when you look on television last night, they could've had fewer people in the room and then a packed room that i had, i understand that but to have a room that was so sparse and everybody wearing masks and they all got the shots, but they all have masks, it doesn't show very much confidence they want
8:55 pm
to build confidence in the vaccine because not everybody wants to take it because they have their freedoms and they don't want to take it, they want to show confidence in the vaccine and then you see something like you saw last night, a room loaded up with masks, the people look like they were choking on their masks, i've never seen anything like it. maria: are you thinking about running again in 2024? >> 100%, the pull show it and everybody wants me too do it, 100% i'm thinking about running and we will be very successful. maria: mr. president this is been a terrific interview, it's great to catch up with you again, i am here at the border, fox news is only major network that have people on the border and we have a lot of them, we will continue doing that. >> you do have great courage and i appreciate it and you really do, you're very outstanding and we appreciate it, everybody does. maria: my thanks to former president trump, don't go
