forever. president joe biden sort of liked it because he is arguing his stimulus plan is working for you but take a listen. >> today's report just underscores in my view how vital the actions are taking are. checks to people who are hurting, support for small businesses, for childcare in school reopening, support to help families put food on the table, our efforts are starting to work but decline is steep and we still have a long way to go. larry: wait a minute president joe, you just had the biggest jobs missing history nearly 800,000, although that lower-than-expected. that doesn't sound so great for your stimulus plan, then of course not for your tax plan because you're gonna hike $4 trillion in taxes which doesn't sound like much of a plan if the job market is underperforming. then again mr. biden argues we need more stimulus in order to

bailout the job market. he's at 4 trillion, why stop there, why not go to 6 trillion, by the way all of this will be on top of the current service budget spending, if i get this right is about were trillion. you would be $10 trillion layered on all of this other economic stuff because today's number was only 266,000, is seems like a pretzel twist to me, i really don't understand the logic, i never have were gonna pour cash into the economy to stimulate and they were gonna tax cash out of the economy which is recessionary, somebody in the west wing should make up their mind, you want a boom or bust, you could appreciate the conundrum, put in this high-level policy stuff aside, i happen to think today's jobs report was basically a fluke, that is right, fluke, it doesn't correlate with any other economic statistics.

housing, manufacturing services, ism, trucking, business capital investment, huge profits, there is a boom out there in the jobs report just missed it. by the way the boom is still being led by trump roles, i want to make this point. operation warp speed, that was a vaccine, low taxes, minimal regulation and energy independence. so far mr. biden's plan has not been enacted except for the 1.9 trillion stimulus which had a temporary bump up in consumer spending and jobs but you're not getting much bang for your buck look at today's number, mr. trump's policies already leading to higher productivity and real wages if only they be left in place if it ain't broke don't fix it, you knew i was going to sit, here's part of today's flute not seasonally adjusted jobs were actually up over a million, not seasonally

adjusted jobs were actually up over a million, that is very important, i don't want to go too deep into the weeds, i'm just knowing the catastrophic pandemic has screwed up all of the seasonal adjustments made by the government, this number actually is a whole lot higher than folks think and also if you look under the hood of the 266,000, you will find worker wages and over the past three months for example, the wages of 3.4% annual rate, that is a big increase, the so-called worker income proxy which is wages times hours worked, that is up 8.4% annually over the past three months, that's a huge number the biggest gain in the whole report was leisure and hospitality. that was up 331,000, bigger than

the total and for the first four months of the year, this is important, the first four months of the year, jobs have jumped 1.8 million. that is not nothing. that suggests that the bidens would quit meddling with the economy you could have four or 5 million new jobs in 2021 which would be fabulous. here's about point, stuck in the middle of all of this long-term unappointed duration defined as being out of work 27 weeks or longer, that has not really fallen this year, it may have crept up a little bit. overall unemployment has fallen though it did take up a bit in april, the long-term unemployment rate is four-point to million, it is basically not changed, maybe a tad worse, i think this problem can be

directly traced to overly generous and overly long on employment benefits. 44% of their firms are unable to fill open positions. a friend of mine tells a story they own a string of movie theaters in texas and they are reopening, but they can't find anybody who will work at the modest weight is necessary because uncle sam is paying that much more to stay at home. , i think in the beginning going back a year, it was a good idea to help people with unappointed assistance. it was necessary a year ago. but now it's a good idea taking way too far, if it's left you to deal in the economy and jobs will suffer, once again for that governor ron desantis leads the way, he has the right idea, his report today, and executive order that residents receiving unemployment benefits will be

required to once again show proof that they're looking for a job. that is exactly what the federal government should do, team biden insist on a massive expansion of various welfare cash benefit programs that have stripped any work requirements for workfare or anything of the like. it may be there most pernicious policy undermining the dignity of work, undermining the value of work. interestingly, a lot of states are done or planing to do the same as florida, including, trumpets please, believe it or not, michigan. michigan, please state michigan are putting workfare back into unemployment. pennsylvania, another blue state, believe it or not, pro-business states like north carolina, we expect that, montana, maine, kentucky, give

credit to desantis and all the states who have restored workfare and that is going to help their local job markets enormously, wait-and-see, all of the job stuff is going to be politics. some are going to argue it helps bidens package other are going to argue bidens package is not working it is failing. i'm just personally glad jobs are rising, even 266,000, that is not nothing in that real number really could be closer to a million, i just want the emerging workforce to recover and prosper. i am guessing next month you'll see a gigantic number because this month's number was fluky. i'll tell you this, rating war against investment spending, more and more money pumped out by free money from the federal reserve, more income transfer with no work requirement, jacking up taxes on anything

that moves, that is not a good policy mix, not a good policy mix. trump roles would keep this boom alive for another five years or more. guiding rules are going to throw a wet blanket over the whole story and that would be a shame, americans overly suffered way too much. joining us now for more discussion on these numbers, peter griese, maryland economist, nancy tinkler, peter, take a whack at this number, odds and ends and phony in fluky, which are take on it, there's gotta be something wrong as you said in the beginning of your introduction, is not consistent with all the other numbers that we have in the economy, how can we have the great retail sales we have been enjoying, the restaurant opening and demanding more from all manner of supplies and so forth

and have the transportation or warehouse sector shrink by 80000, how are they getting the goods, we know that manufacturers are going fill tilt i can understand circumstances where there is very little job gains because they can't find workers but you don't go laying off truck drivers and then run stories in the wall street journal where they interview the truck company and say we can't get enough workers. it does not add up. you are right seasonal adjustment factors are based on a stable environment without structural circumstances changing a great deal, those things have changed, i suspect ten years from now when you look at this. this is going to be larger because of the factors will have been adjusted. larry: that is not uncommon in this game, i was working on air earlier this morning when the report came out and i threw my hands up and said this is a fluke, this is a fluke.

nancy, there is one area that does troubled me, i mentioned it in the opening, that is long-term on employment duration, 27 weeks or more has gone nowhere, and does not drop the way the overall unemployment rate has dropped, in fact we have a table on and we showed it once before, it's gone up a little bit around four-point to million. i think this ties to the issue of overly generous unemployment benefits without work requirements, what do you think. >> i totally agree in your opening monologue, when you pay people $23 an hour to sit at home it's very difficult for employers to attract the most skilled workers and that's what some of the skills argument is not really setting well the survey data shows us there's a million people waiting for the benefits to run out and that's

what you have mcdonald's offering private or dollar signing bonuses into polling free tuition if you worked there for four months, the incentives are misaligned in government is distorting the labor market and fiscal and executive overreach are at real risk to the recovery. larry: you're a stock market maven, no stocks love this report stocks looked at as a lousy report. even 266,000 jobs, a few four or five or six month ago we would've been thrilled with anything like that. so it's not nothing we have created 1.8 million jobs in the first four months of the year. but nancy, i know stocks love it because it means said free money forever. >> i think that's right, i was on a call this morning and he was comparing us to japan. that modern monetary theory continues for decades because we

are becoming japan. that's what stocks are keyed off of, let's not forget the earnings were pretty spectacular and we got an immediate response from earnings, what investors are doing their rotating they've rotated into big tech today, that's been the key theme of this market, rotation and breath, that's not all bad, there's a lot of money on the sideline. while i don't agree that we should be focused only on fed policy, that is at the margin with what's driving stocks by strong earning. larry: peter, let's pursue this, profits, also known as earnings have been fabulous and i think at the end of the day profits are the mother's milk of stocks. here is my problem without story, peter. profits are so strong that the biden administration wants to tax them away. i don't get that, what is wrong with profits, everybody is profiting from this, profits

make the world go around, more hires, profits mean more wages, profits mean better equipment and technology in living standards, they want to tax them to death. >> they seem to think if you raise taxes, you won't lower investment, that is just silly but that's the biden book of economics. they want a carbon tax so people use less carbon, if you tax profits you won't use less capital, will get very good profit data by the way in the second quarter on a year-over-year basis will likely be up 50%, that will take the ratio down to the historic average, we can have a great summer rally if somehow or other mitch mcconnell can keep his thumb in the dam and keep it off from happening, keep these guys from getting anything that they want. i pray every night that joe

manchin will have an epiphany, a poll on the road to become a republican. larry: don't hold your breath. >> i pray. larry: one person i haven't called on, nancy pelosi, i think we have a soundbite from nancy pelosi, or do you just want me too read it? the disappointing april jobs report highlights the urgent need to pass president biden's american jobs, we need to take bold action to build back better from this crisis by investing in our nation, our workers and our families. nancy, i knew this is going to be the line and i don't know, loki has 4 trillion, why stop it for, why not go to six? if you believe in it than do more, why stop at 28% corporate rate, why not go back to 35 or 40 if you believe in it why not do more, your take.

>> i totally agree there was a great book written by jim payne in 1992 where he identified the bureaucratic role of two, by they collected dollar and spend the dollar covid-19 92 it cost him a dollar and 5 cents. so the notion that somehow raising taxes is going to be beneficial to anyone, i'm sure now it's a dollar 50. i take issue with that, then the guilty tax proposal is going to penalize the very companies that we need the most, technology companies, pharmaceutical, semi, semi cap equipment, the policies don't line up, they don't make sense as you said earlier and i think we should get government, lifetime government employees out of the free market and let the free market takeover. larry: art laffer did a study a while back to spend a dollar and actually cost you a dollar 35. no one ever talks about that. can you make us some money this

warmest progress and we recognize what is right versus what is wrong, doesn't sound right to judge people based on a characteristic that they cannot change that they had nothing to do with or would it be better to based on things that they have dominion over. that is only then that makes any sense the american people need to realize that they are getting sick and tired quite frankly of this woken us. larry: that is my thought, between your work and senator scott's work, i think this is a pivotal moment since the election for the first time more traditional conservative forces have the progressive left back on their heels, back on their heels because biden was taken by

majority of americans are better than that it was a bait and switch during the election, joe biden is supposed to be moderate, he's probably to the left of bernie sanders, i thinke people are saying there waking up from being caught in the headlines in their gonna start thinking but this is not about, i've said before democrats and republicans, this is about people who appreciate america foror the ideal of liberty and freedom and justice versus people who want to really different utopian society where government takes care of you from cradle-to-grave and you give them all power, that doesn't work. larry: i dare say, biden kamala harris and the others do not know how to handle you and scott and others in the arguments that you all are making, i don't think they know how to handle

packages insane those benefits are too generous because it will give them incentive not to come back to work, we should not be surprised when you expend the benefits and that's exactly what happened. the committee is responsible for the federal budget, they say there's $2.1 trillion in unspent money from the various covid relief packages that are not outstanding. larry: that is a really key point. i was in favor of the first relief package back in april 2020. but the next several, no. the more unappointed benefits, the more unemployment you're going to have and the longer the benefits, the longer you're it.g to have let me ask a related question. suppose a federal government, supposed biden quit work requirements on unemployment bee unemployment rate go up or down, just asking.

>> we tried that several times and they stepped in to prevent it, i know when mike pence was governor in indiana they put work requirements on medicaid benefits as well but i think certainly it would be the right policy and it's only once intended by the support that is given so people could get a job or they would be looking for job. larry: the whole business of creating welfare benefits, whatever the program is, child tax credits, dependent care, k-12, expanding medicare, expanding medicaid, vertically medicaid, there are no work requirements, we stop work requirements, i had newt gingrich a couple of nights ago, he was there negotiating bipartisan with bill clinton, onteam biden, i don't know whetr it's president sanders or president aoc or president biden or whatever, they are stripping all of that away, i think it's a

capitale gains tax and we will have the most incredible inheritance tax, death tax because of these policies. since i've been asking you all of these puzzling questions, do we really want to have higher taxes in china, is part of our policy? >> i think i made that point last time on your show we'd be higher than communist china for go back to 28%, if you out on state and local taxes the corporations pay and they don'tt pay and other countries we would be number one, the highest tax country on the corporate rate side, not even adding in the capital gains and estate taxes that you talked about. there is so much bad policy that is pushed forward, one piece that you do a great job highlighting, the biden team has suggested that they pay $80 billion to higher taxes and somehow magically generate 700 billion in revenue, there is no justification for that.

was only a year ago in the wake of the tragedy of george floyd that tim scott proposed a policing bill that was filibustered and yet today what you hear democrats say the filibuster is a jim crow robert just a year later, they filibustered him to provide policing reform he's in a unique position to show hypocrisy. larry: can we pursue the tim scott agenda, can we pursue the ben carson agenda instead of having i'm serious about this a secular republican virus squad, and we do that, i think if we do that were gonna sweep in the midterms. but if we don't do that i worry about them in terms. >> your 100% right, look at 2016 when donald trump ran, he brought in a whole new board, it's that traditional republicans were the voters of donald trump with a populist
