better. i'm elizabeth macdonald, this is "the evening edit" and we're going to start it right now. ♪. elizabeth: let's start with republican claudia tenney. great to have you on congressman. what do you think of this new house intelligence report about covid-19 escaping from the wuhan lab? looks like they have got more evidence of that, that it exists in nature. what do you think? >> well that is not a big surprise. we've been on this, we heard about it. there is famous sequences between senator rand paul and dr. fauci. we know through the echo health alliance, a proxy for the wuhan lab we indirectly funded this lab with united states money. we know china is developing biological weapons. we know they have been involved working with covid-19 or covid viruses, you know, for years, now this is being revealed by intelligence. it us time for the chinese to come forward to admit what

happened, tell us the truth. we shouldn't have to have an investigation. they should come clean with the world health organization and all of us. elizabeth: the u.s. agency for international development said to funded this research as well. should dr. fauci, cdc, hhs, should everybody open all the books, give a full accounting, show all the records? >> absolutely of the american people have the right to know this virus killed half a million people in the united states alone. it has shut down our economy. shut down our businesses. it has been a tragedy and china need to be held accountable. i would like to see it. i would like to see the transparency. i think it is time to put those records out. elizabeth: devin nunes and house intelligence says there is chance, u.s. funding may have helped working with the wuhan labs working with the chinese military to do the supervirus research. the nih lifted a ban on that research in 2017. sit tight, claudia, congresswoman. we'll come back to you. here is the president talking

about the cease-fire between israel and hamas. >> i spoke with prime minister netanyahu. earlier today i spoke with president el-sisi of egypt. israel agreed to mutual unconditional cease-fire began in less than two hours. the egyptians now informed us, hamas, other groups in gaza also agreed. my conversation with president netanyahu, i commended for the decision to bring the current hostilities to a close in less than 11 days. i also emphasized what i said throughout this conflict. the united states fully supports israeli's right to defend itself from indiscriminate at rocket attacks from ham and other terrorist groups that have taken the lives of innocent people in israel. he shared with me the appreciation for the iron dome system which our nations

developed together and saved the lives of constant israeli citizens both arab and jew. i assured him of my full support to replenish israel iron dome defenses in the future. over the last 11 days i spoke with the prime minister six times. i spoke with president abbas of the palestinian authority. part of our intense diplomatic engagement. i want to thank secretary of state, secretary of defense, national security advisor for everyone on our team for the incredible efforts to bring this out come we're about to see. we held insensitive high-level discussions hour by hour literally. egypt, palestinian authority, other middle-eastern countries with the avoiding the long conflict we've seen in previous years when hostilities have broken out. i extend my sincere gratitude to president el-sisi and senior egyptian officials who played

such a critical role in this diplomacy. i appreciate the contributions of other parties in the region who have been engaged working towards the end of hostilities. these hostilities resulted in the tragic deaths of so many civilians including children. i send my sincere condolence to all families israeli-palestinian, who lost loved one as recovery for the wounded. we remain committed to work with the united nations and other international stakeholders to provide rapid humanitarian assistance and the marshall international support for the people of gaza and gaza reconstruction efforts. we will do this in full partnership with the palestinian authority, not hamas, authority. and in a manner that does not permit hamas to simply restock its military arsenal. i believe the palestinians and israelis equally deserve to live

advantage. in hamas there was election canceled, one of the reasons they sent over 4,000 missiles we found out into israel where israel had to defend itself. that this is concerning he will continue to work with iran a malevolent player in the field. we don't know how much iran participated or cooperated with hamas. i'm concerned that the palestinian authority is weak. we know that president abbas is weak. he doesn't, he doesn't have a large coalition behind him, that the elections that were canceled may have been devastating for him. i'm concerned that president biden, i'm grateful for the cease-fire, kudos to him and administration getting there. i continue to worry about the issue. i think this is an ongoing issue. we cannot project weakness. we must project strength. why the policies put in place by president trump were so successful bringing about the peace accords,

"abraham accords," others small steps but they were magnificent and fantastic the something wee haven't seen in the middle east. i worry, i hold out hope there will be peace. hamas is embodiened in some ways. we'll see, i pray this isn't lasting but we'll see where this ends up. elizabeth: talk of president trump getting the nobel peace prize for the "abraham accords." there is talk of fears of a third enat intifada. 200 killed in the gaza strip. a dozen israelis killed. looks like a cease-fire for now. looks like a tenuous cease-fire. that is what is happening now. so how does this play into a future iran deal? >> i'm very concerned that president biden is going to put us back into iran deal, the former jcpoa which president

trump smartly got us out of. didn't protect the region and put maximum pressure by the trump white house that really brought us this "abraham accords" and a hope for the middle east for the first time in my lifetime any way. elizabeth: yes. >> i am very concerned. i hope he continues to be strong and use pressure and strength that is projected by president trump would be great for president biden. elizabeth: got it. >> i think it would bring lasting peace. elizabeth: congressman thanks so much for joining us. really appreciate it. bring in former hhs assistant secretary dr. bret giroir. we're talking a lot about geopolitics tonight. we want to shift out of the middle east to what is going on in china. this is a serious issue. we can't have another pandemic like we experienced. did the u.s. fund china's supervirus research? >> thanks for having me on. i do share the assessment of the republican security committee that the most likely origin of this virus was the wuhan

institute of virology. there is no specific smoking gun but the circumstantial evidence is overwhelming. lack of another explanation is equally overwhelming. very clearly back in the 2014, 2015 era, the nih was funding research that was published we know about it, about gain of function mutations on this type of virus there is a lot of investigation that needs to be done. if you look at series of grants that were funded they all talked about bats. they all talked about coronavirus but i would bet dimes to doughnuts as they say that the nih does not have record or controls to understand exactly what was done. so it is very possible we did fund this research. elizabeth: why help china fund this research when its labs have been known to be unsafe? sars leaked out after bay beijing lab in 2004.

hundreds of people got sick. the military of china is thought to be involved here. why help china do this work? >> i think the american people deserve specific answers to all those questions. you know it is not just about funding good science. there are implications to what gets funded. there is danger, a worldwide pandemic that could have arisen because of it. there is potential for funding biological weapons that could be used against our allies. it is not just about getting a good grant in, everybody saying this is great, let's fund it. talk about all the issues you point out so accurately. i think we need a congressional investigation. i think we need specific oversight. we have to get to the bottom of this, because that research is still ongoing there, and number of other labs in china and around the world many of whom we properly fund. elizabeth: dr. fauci denies this. minor collaboration, minor

amounts of money. doesn't acknowledge he coauthor ad 2011 "washington post" op-ed, yeah, create laboratory superviruses to get vaccines. the nih lists the ban on the pause of funding in 2017. open the books. are you for opening the books, a commission into this? >> well, 100%. we need to quote, open the books. the problem i can almost guarranty you that the nih doesn't have the records what actually they funded. the nih grants are not like a contract. you send money. at the end of the year you write a report what i did on summer vacation. it is sort of that lax. that works very well in the united states. i want to keep that to support our researchers. when you're talking about overseas, places like china, you need to be much more rigorous. we need to get to the bottom of this. elizabeth: okay. dr. giroir, thank you so much for joining us. come back soon. still ahead, jason chaffetz will help us break down this story, did president biden throw

♪. elizabeth: joining us now fox news contributor jason chaffetz. it is good to see you again. okay the president green lights and okays russia's polluting nord stream 2 but greenpeace, world wildlife fund, environmentalists say this gas pipeline out of russia, in fuel pipeline is ruining the ocean, ruining beaches. did the president just throw environmentalists under the bus? >> i think he threw everybody under the bus. i mean in america he shut down the keystone pipeline. he thought it was bad for the environment but then goes over and appeases russia. how long did they accuse donald trump of being a shill for russia. ends up joe biden is doing favors for russia. so nobody is happy here. nobody is happy about cuddling

doing what president putin wanted. all the environmentalists brought up the concerns so they're upset too. it begs question, why do this, why prioritize russia over the united states of america? it does not make sense. elizabeth: stay on your point, if trump had done this, if he had green-lighted the nord stream pipeline after one of his children got more than three million dollars from the form, from the wife of the former mayor of moscow, that being hunter biden there would be screams of impeachment again. so how is this okay? >> it's not okay. this is, this is the whole point. misdirection by the democrats scream russia, russia, everything to do with donald trump. we're barely 100 plus days into the biden administration. look what he has done to appease, make things easier for russia. at the same time, what is so offensive, are the people who would have, and did make their money on the keystone pipeline.

the president didn't take up but a few hours to shut down our ability to be energy independent. and close off energy production on public lands, particularly out west, in utah, in nevada, in wyoming. but these are real jobs, good-paying jobs. the ability to fuel our future. but he seems to be spending a lot more time worried about getting fuel from russia into eastern europe. and it, that is what is so offensive, makes no sense. certainly not good in the best interests of the united states of america. why do this, mr. president? elizabeth: so the biden, the biden administration, he green lights, waives sanctions against the russia nord stream 2 pipeline when a week ago russian hackers shut down the u.s.'s biggest pipeline the colonial. just like russia shut down ukraine's power. we have white house press secretary jen psaki saying how can you stop a pipeline in another country that is 95%

built when the keystone pipeline was fully completed more than 10 years ago? we just don't understand the logic of blocking keystone, opposing dakota access, pipelines destroy the environment but don't pipelines destroy the environment overseas? i mean this nord stream 2 has been polluting germany's baltic coast with toxic grease on beaches and oceans, coming out of the nature reserve, goes through a nature reserve in russia, pollutes the baltic sea. how is that okay? environmentalists have to be upset about this. >> they have to be upset, i ask the administration what was imperative to get this done. the keystone pipeline was important to canada. to the point where we bring ourselves energy independent. shut off our ability to develop energy resources in the united states so we could export the energy products like clean natural gas into europe. elizabeth: stick for a second,

hang on. i want to ask you a question. the pipeline that michigan governor wanted to shut down seize profits from, they're saying forget it. we're ignoring you. we'll keep doing what we're doing with our pipeline. what if pipelines in the u.s., companies run them, we'll ignore you biden administration. we'll not shut down. what would happen? >> i don't know. i mean that would be an interesting way to go. all kinds of legal lawsuits flying every single direction. let's understand, donald trump made a very clear directive, be energy independent. that brought untold safety and security to the united states and it drove down energy costs. what i want the viewers to understand at home for american energy is democrats fundamentally do not want lower energy prices because they believe if you drive more, that is bad for the environment. so they're just fine raising the price of gas and having these energy products to bo sky-high. elizabeth: they're driving their

team and his lawyers in multiple meetings, strategy sessions on how to push back against seven women accusing the governor of sexual harassment allegations made earlier this year by woman who work for the governor. so this is not a good look for a tv anchor advising a politician in trouble helping him launder his scandals. what do you say? >> well, nothing he has done so far, chris cuomo with respect to his brother looks very good. the way that they covered the pandemic early on with respect to governor cuomo when he was a darling, a hero, having him on, putting the swab the size of a big barbecue mop in his nose, making jokes about it, that was inappropriate too. he is a major public figure making comments critical of the president. doesn't matter whether he is supporting or being critical of the president. i don't think he should have been appearing on the show at all. he was a major newsmaker with respect to covid, governor cuomo

was. so the fact that cnn when governor cuomo got in trouble will not be on chris' show anymore. it's a little too late. the barn door is open. elizabeth: to your point when all that was happening behind the scenes chris cuomo was helping his brother strategize against these women who were accusing the governor of sexual harassment and assault but cnn is not disciplining chris cuomo. they will keep him on. this sounds like it could be a big hit to the credibility. the question is, where is the commission for the investigating the cuomo family? >> what credibility? credibility with who? they don't have a lot of credibility with me. the further hit to their already weakened credibility? it could be. and you bring out something that is the second problem with chris cuomo's coverage. the first thing was to have his brother on at all. also to be acting as a political advisor while he is supposedly a impartial moderator is a

separate ethical problem from a journalistic perspective i would think. elizabeth: chris cuomo also colluded with michael cohen before his tv interviews with michael cohen. this is a pattern. but cnn not doing anything about that. let's move on to this sir. governor cuomo blamed quote, toxic political times when he was asked about giving his family private covid-19 treatment including sending a doctor and to test his family at his multimillion-dollar home in the hamptons when people couldn't get tested across new york and those were expedited at a state lab. the doj is investigating that in a criminal probe. what could be the potential criminally here? >> that is what, that is what is so amazing here. that is certainly a scandal, the special access, that his family

members and other key cronies got for long period of time up until the present from what i understand. but the fact that the department of justice would be looking at that is quite striking. i mean they're already looking at the phony records and the omissions from the state records. that is understandable. that is it 18 usc second 1001, you can't make false material statements or omissions with any matter within the jurisdiction of a u.s. department or agency. very broad statute, interpreted broadly. that is one thing. that didn't surprise me. elizabeth: you mean on nursing home deaths, i'm sorry you mean on the nursing home death. >> right. exactly. where they fudged the numbers. but now looking at this, it is really when you think about it a political scandal. you have to think for a minute what is the federal statute? well there is a federal statute they may be apparently looking at. 18 u.s. code 666 we referred to

it and joke as the mark of the beast in the u.s. attorney's office when i was there and it's a very broad statute misapplication of state funds where the state is using federal funds and federal help. using that is reserved for bribes or gratuities given or asked for by state officials. you have got to think why are they looking at that in connection with that. all i can think of, i have no inside knowledge or anything like that, all i can think of according to one of the stories they were asking for political support from people in the state senate, at the same time having discussions with them about the availability of vaccines. so that could be, who knows, if they're looking at that, that's amazing. >> yeah. it is abuse of power. it is abuse of state workers and state assets for your own political, personal gain. sol wisenberg thanks for your insights. we'll have you back on.

♪. elizabeth: joining us now ohio republican brad wenstrup. it is good to have you on, congressman. you sit on house intelligence, thank you so much for joining us. what were your thoughts when you saw senate republicans sending a letter to the cdc and the hhs demanding a full accounting of how the powerful teachers union, the aft, got the cdc to shut down the reopening of schools across the country? this is pretty bad stuff. what do you say? >> i thought i would wear my white coat as a physician here tonight to talk about this in particular, right? we have the teachers union, american federation of teachers. they have actually said biden asked the teachers for language that the cdc should use for guidelines. i mean, so now that teachers unions are writing the guidelines. so when it comes across as, that, teachers unions then give them the guidelines that they

want and then the cdc is going to craft it to what they desire rather than the science. certainly the cdc has seen classrooms. my kids have been in school this entire year without a problem. there is some family members of the kids that got covid-19. they addressed it, got quarantined, treated, everyone got to go to school. this can be done. the science proves it can be done but the teachers unions are in control when it comes to so many of our communities across america, where they're deciding what the science is. president biden made a pledge to insure that you know, we're going to the cdc and it is going to be evidence based but we have a teachers union that would seem to be bent on how to get to know, how to get to know on opening the schools. so the unions have been number one obstacle to education. it is hurting a generation of our children for sure. i know in my district, in many parts, the kids are not in school. they don't have a computer at

home. they're not doing it virtual. nothing is happening. missing social interaction. american pediatric society said how important this is. they're not caring about the kids. this is about them and the union and they seem to be in control. elizabeth: cdc is supposed to be independent in following the science. they're not supposed to care what any union says. they're following a powerful union says because they got president biden elected. we have kids up in harlem saying juniors and seniors saying we can't get scholarships to universities. we can't talk to universities to get into schools, colleges, universities. randi winegarten, president of the teachers union is blaming the biden administration saying they asked us for the language t doesn't matter. you're not supposed to be involved in a scientific decision on reopening schools because you want your own way. you know what i mean? it is not about you. it is about the kids. it is about the science. your words on that? >> well it is about the science,

is unprecedented. we just did, liz, a deposition last week in one of our lawsuits against the biden administration. the director here in the phoenix i.c.e. office literally said as the result of a lack of detainers, there are criminals that could be, that are being released into our community. we know those detainer numbers have gone from 10,000 a month last year to less than 2500 the last two months. so what is happening is the biden administration is not detaining people, they're not detaining people, that means they're not processing them for deportation. when they're not processing for deportation, that means people who have been convicted or charged with crimes are being released into our communities. as a result of this decriminalization, kids now are being caught up as pawns in this whole game the biden administration's playing. elizabeth: yeah. we're seeing the biden administration is releasing about a thursday of the individual -- a third of the individuals that are coming to this country and trying to cross, 178,000 trying to cross,
