"the evening edit" starts right now. ♪. elizabeth: welcome to the show. you're watching the fox business network. we begin with the protests in cuba. protests also breaking out in miami. cuban-americans in miami supporting demonstrations against the brutal dictatorship, the communist regime there. fox news's rich edson live at the statement department with more. rich, good to see you. reporter: good evening, liz. extraordinary protests in cuba with a significant show of support here in the united states especially in south florida, home to the largest cuban-american population. this afternoon in miami-dade county, demonstrators shut down a highway in both directions building on a weekend of protest s focusing on poverty in cuba. cuba blames the problems on a decades long embargo. state department says cuba's

humanitarian issues are a result of the government in havana. >> we're always considering options available to us that would allow us to support the cuban people, to support their humanitarian needs which are indeed profound and they are profound because of not anything the united states has done but, but from the actions, inactions, mismanagement, corruption of the cuban regime. reporter: the white house says officials are still reviewing u.s. cuba policy while the biden administration has left the previous administration sanctions against cuba in place. liz? elizabeth: thank you, rich edson. good to see you. okay, cuba detaining reportedly disappearing at least 140 fellow cubans. they're being grabbed off the streets, thrown in prison for protesting communist cuba's economic collapse. food shortages, high prices, no water, no electricity. look who is here.

back with us tennessee senator marsha blackburn. senator, great to have you on. there has been a blackout on cuba on facebook, whatsapp, instagram to stop protesters from communicating? what are your thoughts about that? what is being done about that? >> what we have learned there are over 146,000 cubans that are using syfon. this is a technology that the, open technology accountability act brought forward. senator menendez and i supported this. representative mccaul, over in the house, what this technology does if you have got a government trying to shut down the internet, it's a pathway that will allow people that are being oppressed to get to the internet. so we're pleased that they are using that. in addition to this the president has got to speak out and draw a line in the sand to say that we stand with the cuban

people in their fight for freedom. cuba is 90 miles off our coast. we have to stand with them. it would be a good day for freedom and democracy and a very good day for the cuban people if they were to overthrow this government. elizabeth: we haven't seen anything like this in more than five decades. this must come as a shock to journalists and those who cheered on the obama administration, normalizing u.s. relations with the communist regime while setting aside the brutality of what cuba actually does to its people. this is not about covid-19. people inside of venezuela, cuba, here in the united states in miami, say this is about a dictatorship brutalizing its people. they say if you talk about it as covid-19, you're fatally naive. what do you say to that. >> i say it is about freedom. it is about 62 years of brutal dictatorship. it is about no food, no future, no freedom. i will tell you this, liz,

you've got "the squad" out here lining up with the democratic socialists of america. they have not had one word to say against this cuban dictatorship, or one word for these people fighting for freedom. instead you have got aoc out here tweeting about voting rights and different things. so people in cuba don't have a vote. they do not have freedom. but i think if they are going to stay mum on this, maybe they should visit cuba and live for a month where they do not have food or water or electricity, a job or freedom. elizabeth: okay. the other thing too is that house democrats are pressuring the biden administration to lift trump's sanctions on cuba. reportedly biden administration is reviewing those sanctions. the critics are saying that "the squad" and bernie sanders spend more time tweeting against

republicans instead of condemning or tweeting against the oppressive cuban dictators down there. so their twitter feeds have been silent what is going on. that is a real moral failure. >> it is. elizabeth: assistant secretary of state senator, saying the cuban people have the right to peaceful assembly. they don't have any rights whatsoever. this sounds like tone deaf. like they have a tin ear to what is going on. senator, respond to that first. we'll go to a sound bite from marco rubio. go ahead. >> marco rubio has been outspoken on this. they are fighting to have rights. if "the squad," aoc, staying silent what is happening to cuba, backing the cuba people and resign from conference and go be activists for the democratic socialists of america. it is imperative we stand for the cuban people just like we stood with the hong kong freedom fighters and people of china and

their fight. elizabeth: and in taiwan. representative malliotakis is saying bernie sanders you should go to cuba first-hand to see suffering under the communist dictatorship there. let's listen to senator marco rubio here. >> i don't know why it is so hard for them to criticize marxists. i think it is pretty clear people are not saying anything. the president took a whole day. he said something. he still left out the word marxists communist, socialists. you described the murderous nature of castro regime. that is what the nature of every marxist regime is always. marxism, socialist are built on this give power, stable economy, all you need, the price is your freedom. so they win. what happens you don't get those things and you don't get your freedom back. if you complain about it, they crack your head open, put you in scale, exile you or they kill you. elizabeth: senator, your final word. >> well he is exactly right on that and that is why you have to keep the sanctions on these

repressive regime leaders in cuba. they have to understand we are going to draw a line in that sand. if the president of cuba and his regime start firing on the people there in cuba who are protesting we need all options on the table. elizabeth: okay. senator marsha blackburn. thank you for joining us. staying on the chain reaction of events hitting venezuela, the communist government there charged the number two official in the opposition party led by juan guaido with terrorism and treason. let's bring in former deputy national security advisor kt mcfarland. kt, he was arrested, he was seized from his car on a caracas highway, thrown into prison for torture. being tortured. this prison is known for torture. what do you say to this story? >> it is the same story whether cuba or venezuela the socialism doesn't work, communism doesn't work, the only people supporting

the communist dictatorships, the united states senate, united states congress, the biden administration and couple of college campuses that is the moment of truth, do we believe in democracy or not believe in democracy? we have two movements in cuba, venezuela and again in venezuela people have taken to the streets. they demand change. they don't like the oppressive nature of their government. they don't like the government services. they don't like any of it. they want done with it. where is the united states? are we just going to not even say anything in support of this? this is a real moment of testing that the biden administration, frankly and the united states. who are we going to support? communist dictatorships or people who want democracy and freedom? elizabeth: yeah. we're seeing the american flag inside of the protests in cuba. your word on this. there is fears of iran's growing power and influence both in cuba and venezuela. iran sent two of its navy vessels within the past month or

so with weapons and missiles reportedly on those gunboats. so what are your thoughts about iran here? >> we worried for a number of years about the iranian venezuelan connection and cuban connection. we wordried about china's long-range ambitions to get their foothold in the western hemisphere. if we don't figure this out, we have people in these countries, the majority of people in these countries they want democracy. they don't want iran. they don't want russia. they don't want china. if we're just going to sit idly by, not even give them some moral support in addition there is plenty of stuff we can do to help these people. for example in cuba, the dictatorship shut down the internet 24 hours ago. we can help open that up. we can pull down the firewall they created. venezuela is doing the same thing. iran is doing the same thing. do what we're good at. let people communicate with each other. then they have their own

revolution. elizabeth: senator marsha blackburn was how republicans in the senate will be moving to help cuba protesters to get on the internet and communicate with each other. there is a blackout there. border patrol, left's get to this. border patrol says there are tens of thousands of get aways. they get away every month, tens of thousands. there is always concern people coming in from central america and venezuela pouring over the u.s. border. are they from iran, are they from the middle east? where are they from? >> in the trump administration, we found in fact some of these people were coming from iran. they went to venezuela. they were joining with other people to slip stream with the groups smuggling into the united states. as you point out once they're here. this is like catch-and-release. they catch, get released who knows what they're doing. if you can smuggle people over the southern border and smuggle

elizabeth: welcome back. joining us now member of house foreign affairs committee and house small business committee, representative claudia tenney back with us. congresswoman, great to see you again. there was backlash against "politico" reporting that the dnc and the biden administration plan to control the flow of information that we get on our phones about covid-19 vaccines. this is kind of an intrusive weird story. what do you say? >> i am stunned. i feel like we're in the ministry of truth in the old "984" book and democrats are in control and controlling this. can't get people door-to-door which was the first team and look at text messages, coordinate with a political organization to coordinate our text messages personal to telecom companies? people should be very, very concerned about. this this is scary. we're at a level i'm amazed how

much disinformation there is out there and how much there is to suppress free speech and our ability to communicate with each other. elizabeth: we brought the story to viewers last night about reporting that "politico" and biden allied groups in the dnc they will work with phone carriers to stop misinformation they say over vaccines on text messages. can the dnc censor any information they decide is misinformation and tell us what we can privately read over your text messages is? can they decide what we read in private? >> who decides what is misinformation or not? that is up to the individual to make that determination. we're bombarded in the information age with information from all sources. the biggest challenge for our generation right now is determine who is telling the truth. that is up to us to verify the sources. not up to house control or communications between the big tech companies and the democratic party. we know they're in with them.

they certainly donate over 90% of their money to them. certainly support their policies and they, the democrats support these organizations. so i don't know, it certainly looks like there is communication there. i haven't seen the it verified, but it would be nice if we didn't have one party rule in washington and you can find out what is really going on with the enforcement, rules, with fbi and -- elizabeth: biden administration, we hear you. the administration is concerned. the administration is concerned half the population is not fully vaccinated that. you're seeing a little over a third of people vaccinated in states like alabama and arkansas. so but do we really need the dnc to be stepping in and just sending, shooting messages to people on their phones via texting? what are the guardrails? what else can they censor about information about this? i mean people have access to information. it is just a question, do you

really need to go this far? >> i think it is inappropriate for them to even have access through a telecom company. we've got to now as consumers look at what the privacy statements are. if i am going to sign up for verizon or at&t or one of these companies, i want to know if one of, a political party can get access to my text-messaging to send me things, to send me misinformation and whether i can block that coming into my phone is serious issue. vaccines, we have a lot of senior citizens and vulnerable are vaccinated. majority of people vaccinated are tend to be younger children and children less vulnerable there is issue of people not want to be vaccinated. when you see mask mandates in parts of the country or fly on a plane or move about in certain areas, you know where if you haven't been vaccinated asked to put your mask on i think people

♪. elizabeth: economists have been warning about the massive spending going on in washington. look what is happening now? americans are already dealing with higher prices on everything from food to gas. economists are warning this will get worse. edward lawrence has more from the white house. edward? reporter: elizabeth, the consumer price index we have not seen numbers like this year-over-year since 2008. in that year-over-year the price of all goods is up 5.4%. month over month that increase is .9%. when you remove energy and food

costs, that year-over-year you're looking at core pce, the last time it was more than 4.5% was november of 1991. now a white house official telling me they believe it is because of the shortage of items they can see as well as more people getting vaccines and those people turning around spending more than expected. still business owners on the ground are telling me they may have to raise prices because the input costs are forcing them to do it. listen. >> obviously we all face that problem in the industry and we're continuing to work with ways to try to mitigate as much as possible, depending how persistent and how strong it is. sure, some of that will ultimately gets passed along to the consumer. it is too early to tell how much impact that will have. reporter: year-over-year, gasoline, for all types of gasoline that was up 45.1%. as you know the price is passed

on to the consumer eventually. if is something delivered to the house or the grocery store or any store you buy a product in. that cost eventually will be passed on. liz? elizabeth: edward lawrence, thanks for your reporting. it is good to see you. let's welcome back to the show economic strategist mitch roschelle. mitch, good to see you. this is a read people didn't expect to see coming on inflation. what were your thoughts? >> well economists pegged it lower and economists are often wrong. this time they're wrong in the wrong direction. the fed says it is transitory. a fancy word for temporary. month over month, cpi was up .9%. last month, .7. that is high school calculus, the rate of change is increasing not decreasing. edward is right. it is the input costs. it is labor, gasoline, petroleum, those costs go into everything we do in a service economy. i don't see it going away

anytime soon. elizabeth: china has been raising costs on shipping. half of small businesses are raising their prices, half, nearly half, rather. we haven't seen that in 40 years. we have this, mitch, bernie sanders wants 3 1/2 trillion dollars to spend on infrastructure. senate moderate democrats they're not ready to go for that. president biden is bringing back his build back better campaign because he is seeing democrats pushing on the idea that human beings are infrastructure, not a good look, not a good sale point. you can't retail that to the voter. midterms coming, democrats fear major losses. what do you say? >> human infrastructure, i still can't get a good definition of it, human infrastructure is another name for social welfare programs. the problem with that they're known as entitlements. the problem with that, once you put them in you can't get rid of them. they're the political third rail. if we pass 3.5 trillion. i get chills even saying that,

piece of legislation, not just a one-time thing to get the economy turned around. we may be stuck with some of the entitlement programs for generations. elizabeth: itch in, the other thing too, afl-cio, teachers unions, left-wing groups are demanding $4 trillion in tax hikes. senator portman says we'll potentially see potential tax hikes we've never seen before in this country. former treasury secretary robert rubin, larry summers who worked in the obama administration. they're warning inflation is going up and up and it is here to stay. senator mitch mcconnell saying it is small potatoes compared to what could be coming. what do you see coming? >> well, let's stick one second with inflation. inflation is a tax on the middle class. so all of these tax hikes that labor unions are screaming about are quote, unquote the rich. the fact of the matter is, if what we're doing spending wise, stimuluswise is inflationary we're taxing the very people

♪. elizabeth: join being us now fox news contributor dr. marty makary is back with us. thanks for coming on. what do you think of the eight students filed a lawsuit against indiana university over the covid mandate for everybody, students and staff. this could head to the supreme court. they say this is a constitutional fight. what do you say? >> i do not know the legal grounds and i do know the medical grounds but there is no justification requiring the vaccine in healthy kids. the second dose may be associated with complications that are avoidable. people have a good reason not to get the vaccine. some people have natural immunity from prior infection and other people may have

legitimate concerns. the idea of mandating both doses in kids regardless if they're already immune is going to hurt some kids. elizabeth: you know when vaccines were first rolled out the government said nothing about vaccine mandates. now everybody is talking about them. the fda has a new warning for the j&j vaccine that the shot is linked to a serious but rare side-effect called guillain-barre syndrome. it attacks the nervous system. here is the thing, dr. fauci is dismissing concerns about vaccine side-effects saying the benefits outweigh the risks. should he be dismissing the concerns? >> we've gone from being pro-vaccine as intellectual community in the scientific community, to vaccine fanaticism, that we say whatever we say that every american has to be vaccinated. that is not true. not every american has to be vaccinated. with the kids, what is the risk benefit analysis? i would love to see the data? we don't have that.

we have underreporting of deaths by the cdc, sorry overrepresentation of deaths and underreporting of vaccine complications. in healthy kids we don't know if any of those deaths have been in healthy kids out of the 326 that the cdc reported. they have not looked into it despite 21,000 staff at the cdc. elizabeth: okay. we're showing this history of bad drugs story that came out in 2017. let's talk about. this there was a study done between 2001 and 2010 of fda approved drugs. it found over that 10-year time frame a third of the drugs had to be pulled for dangerous side-effects including things like arthritis infections, blood clots and even death. so shouldn't dr. fauci do well to respect the folks here who are fearful? he is blaming idealogical rigidity for people not taking vaccines. are people, he is a saying i don't get why they're not getting vaccinated.

there is a history here though, right? >> well, actually if you look at the way we capture complications from vaccines it is pathetic. it's a voluntary self-reporting sloppy database which most people don't know how to report into. we can't rely on the yelp of vaccine complications to tell us what the true complications are. and what you just said historically when we look closer and use good methodology we discover more complications than are evident initially and that is what we just saw with the j&j vaccine. look i'm still for vaccines for those who are non-immune, those adults but we've got to recognize that there is nothing with zero risks. right now the risk with the j&j vaccine is about one in 100,000. elizabeth: we also have this separate story. you know the biden administration moving on having local community leaders showing up at peoples doorsteps, knocking on doors to ask them about their vaccinations.

google's youtube took down videos featuring cpac, the conservative political action. they locked out the organization account for a week. stopped cpac from posting videos of the conference. it is all about diversity of opinion and thought. what do you say? >> one of two things happened. they used it as a excuse to such out conservatives during the cpac conference or legitimately blocked studies from the smith center from the infection disease of health and medical center. i don't know which one is worse, but i know this we need to deal with this. if it doesn't fit the narrative of the fda and cdc, they're not allowing independent medical professionals to give opinions anymore. that is a dangerous place to be outside of the conservative bias conversation. elizabeth: yeah. youtube is is saying the action it took because there was discussion of covid treatments not accepted by the cdc and fda,

meaning hydroxychloroquine and the like. you know the video, videos also featured coverage of donald trump's class-action lawsuit against big tech companies. that was censored. what do you say? >> well i think, again, whether they were using this as an excuse, are talking about actually, i mean, censoring conversation about a medical train of thought from reputed places either one of them is table and neither one of them should have happened t shows how much more market power they have. they are literally going to this place. we saw this with the wuhan virus and where it came out and where all of that has happened and that is all changed now. we, the best cure for speech is always more speech and more importantly it is just, it is turning so many people against them and against what we need to do to get our country out of this pandemic. elizabeth: it is not public squares, people know that. they're not public squares. they like to sell themselves as

the town square but they are not. there are two or three big tech players dominating the national conversation. the biden administration wants to break them up. republicans say break them up too along different product lines. there are multiple different pieces of legislation moving in congress. which piece of legislation has legs that you think will be successful in dealing with this issue? >> i think a couple of the bills that are bipartisan out of the anti-trust committee is venue bill and other -- bill. there is good to like, there is bad to like. i think mike lee's bill has a little bit of traction on the senate side. there are other things we need to deal with, geofence warrants, facial recognition. in security in judiciary. there is a lot of different things. one of the things we have to do, if you take the big four tech companies, they are probably four of the most powerful companies in the history of the world but each one of them has different places in the market where they engage in anticompetitive behavior. we have to really drill down how
