democracy. that's shown us back. carolyn b. will get into this with you because obviously you have lived with this story in another country fighting for freedom. what do you see in these protests? is it all just because of covid? >> people want to be free and these protests are not about covid and they aren't about prescription drug plans and overdue library fines. they are about the cuban people saying we are here and don't forget about us preview and want to be free to and the western world is ignoring them. i feel very strongly about this. people want to be free. people don't want to live in a socialist paradise. i agree with you that freedom is the default setting for human beings.

businesses set ablaze in 66 people have been killed and tens of millions of dollars in property damage and now the military is fighting for control of the streets from writer so how far will south africa devolve into chaos? joining me lera logan on "fox nation." lara logan is here. what are you seeing here? >> you know this is quite dramatic because it's been so long since we have seen anything like this. i was in south africa for many years and with the end of apartheid and the rise of nelson mandela in the first equal government in south africa we thought that those days were behind us. i thought those days were behind us but there's something very significant here about how quickly this has devolved. it's a product of the culture and the history of south africa. the violence began in -- that's

the scene of the worst violence because that's where jacob zuma the former president is from and it's a tribal thing to a degree because this is the home but it has spread very quickly because they are all over the country and for many of them this is an irrational thing. even if he's guilty of corruption we have to fight for him and defend him and that's part of what you are seeing. kennedy: is there some worry that this is will spread to other countries throughout the continent because you are absolutely right it happened so quickly. is this a trigger and explain a little bit how the tribal mentality plays into that. >> well i don't see an immediate danger of the spreading in the sense that this is a very south

african issue and it's a south african problem. one factor that's playing into the speed of this is definitely the state of the country because of the pandemic response. i say that because south africans have very heavy lock downs. my own uncle died this weekend at south africa from covid and i've been talking to my family of the last few days but i was shocked to learn that my stepmother and my little sister and my little nephew who were in durban which is where the former president is from they are not able to leave the house. it is way too dangerous for people and we have seen bodies in the streets now and the army has been deployed. what this is really about how the tribal mentality plays into this, it's not just a tribal thing it's the history of south africa thing. jacob zuma was the leader of the struggle against apartheid and the zuma family traditionally

has strong roots in the tribe. south africa was defined for so many years by this incredibly noble struggle for equality and for justice and to end racism. and what happened in the wake of the end of apartheid so many people were left hind and corruption grew and covid, the response to that really came and eviscerated and obliterated the people and the economy and so many ways. so you have these factors coming together for the perfect storm could what has happened here is that jacob zuma's refusing to go to court to testify because most south africans both black and white in india and are united in the charges and there hasn't been a trial yet and he deserves a fair hearing but is refusing to go to court. he's an agreement with -- he

agreed to turn himself in and now he's being held in jail for contempt of court in south africans are venting their rage and frustration that this is a real test for the government because although there has been some hiccups along the way there has never been widespread anger like this. shopping malls are being burned down and people are really afraid. word spreads in a uniquely south african country but the conditions of poverty that are being created by the response to the pandemic have created the foundations for this virus to spread. kennedy: is something to keep an eye out on and how could that happen in this country because it does take one thing. a former president who dashed the murder of george floyd it's hard to know where society is going to go and how they will

it's about time we legalize marijuana and on the heels of the historic house to last year where the house passed it and be scheduled marijuana that significant tree putting the message out there that is long past time the federal government take this issue seriously. today was an exciting day and a lot of the principles we have been pushing especially since this bill continues to provide essential components in the bill. kennedy: go ahead girl. >> i think you mentioned earlier in your monologue about president biden and where he is on the issue. we have some work to do there but the good thing is the senate was out there and all of this is good things we can use in our efficacy in her conversation with the administration and congress.

kennedy: and i think the majority people of people in the united states who live in the state where there's at least medical if not recreational marijuana. i've pointed to the quinnipiac poll and the polling has shifted. in 10 years it's been a phenomenal shift. she came out and admitted that she smoked and inhaled marijuana so i don't know why the president is having such a hard time getting on board but is trying to straddle two worlds here and a lot of the fallout of his major pieces of legislation in the 80s and 90s that's what we are still battling. what is the next step in terms of decriminalizing all trucks and moving to a system that's more like portugal? >> that's a great question. i do think we need to start with marijuana legalization because you pointed out the majority of states have legalized marijuana to some extent.

the major american support. more than half a million people are arrested every year for marijuana possession but this could have life-altering consequences for people. it makes it difficult for them to find jobs and find housing. there are life-altering consequences of people up to deal with and i can neglect the fact that this will impact low-income people and people of color because of being over policed in black and white people use marijuana similarly but black people are more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession. this carries very deep criminal justice and legal consequences. we didn't only need to start rescheduling marijuana decriminalizing it and moving it from the list of -- but then i do think we need to move toward drug to criminalization.

last month the drug alliance worked with members of congress to introduce the first federal till that would decriminalize drug possession that includes duck convictions and also providing for public health approach. kennedy: that is what has made portugal's model so successful is the outreach and taking people out of the criminal justice system and moving them into rehabilitation and making more of a public health question in the present could help like commuting and pardoning all of the people who have been convicted for nonviolent drug crimes. he could do that right now and he doesn't have to wait for the last week that he is in office so i hope the drug policy alliance's pressuring the white house to do that if someone has to do it at some point.

kennedy: britney spears -- britney spears appeared in court and she told the judge he wants to -- charges against her father for conservatorship abuse quote this this conservatorship is live nidetch were in my life. former federal prosecutor matthew rosenberg her new attorney said he will be working promptly and aggressively to remove jamie spears from britney's conservatorship so could the legal team be the key to free britney? he wrote the book on how to become a federal -- mike chase is back. what is the big take away from today? >> this is a pretty momentous day in her conservatorship hearing because britney got a right which is fundamental which is the right to have a lawyer

for choosing but that is thing in the big hurdle from the beginning of this case but it was important this lawyer could have used this opportunity to accept the appointment and go back to the war room and start working on the case but he didn't. he started coming out swinging and he pointed outlook if jamie spears wanted to do what's in the best interest of his daughter it's curious he doesn't just take this opportunity to voluntarily step aside so judge what other things might he be doing that are due to his daughter's best interest but i thought it was a good first appearance of a strong one and hopefully it sets the tone. kennedy: he's not screwing around and you hear that from jamie spears and his attorney but rigney's dad and her conservative vendor person jody montgomery whose has $50,000 a month and private security which the judge agreed to which is ridiculous she and jamie spears have been pointing fingers back and forth so the two

conservatives here -- conservatories can't get along something has to change change. how do you amend that? been at the judge has to take control here. a conservatorship is not about who gets to be the conservator and snobby privilege and an award. they haven't done anything to get a windfall this case for the conservatorship is not working the judge needs to address that. there's now competent lawyer. it's time to clean house and put in place a system that is going to work. most importantly this judge needs to put in place a system that's going to ensure britney spears a state is not being wasted by the people they are supposed to be protecting her. these people should not be causing her to lose the fruits of her labor. kennedy: while they are reaching themselves by making deals on her behalf because under this

arrangement they can do that. where do we go from here and when will we see motions filed by her new attorney? >> look this is a liberty interest. for her new lawyer to accomplished civil and criminal litigation as a former prosecutor he knows when you have an interest at stake he moves quickly. for lawyers like myself who had the privilege to obtain relief for people who have been wrongfully detained in wrongfully imprisoned the big question at the end is always where do i go to get my years back in word or a goat to get the decades back that i lost in this unjust process? her lawyer knows he can't get those years back but what he can do is prevent additional days weeks months from falling off the calendar. i think you will file for emergency relief rate he welcome back to the court with a defined plan on who should be put in place for the conservatorship
