kennedy: is served in iraq he worked in afghanistan, what are you feeling when you see some of those pictures, especially through a new prism as a congressman? >> anger, humiliation, the nightmare scenario we had feared. the nightmare administration it would warrant her afghan allies out of there. they were confident that many more months, they had bad intelligence they had bad assessments and we aren't living that cascade of failure today. >> let me ask you about that specifically. that is something you know a great deal about. that is what struck me, the president today in his speech he basically said five what are the most knowledgeable people on afghanistan because he's been involved in foreign policy as vice president for eight years but also as a senate committee chair and he's been in washington for about 341 years. so, if he knew everything and could not see this coming, how

bad was the intelligence? >> again you have the difference between somebody who has gathered their knowledge through talking to people who have talked to people of read books, who have written books and wholly disconnected that entire site from the ground through the ground reality. this has been a characteristic for post- 911 conflicts on how disconnected we can be helpful easy it is to try to shape intelligent assessments to shape conclusions to fit what you want it to be. but guess what, reality rears its ugly head. it did that and tell event went from no provincial capitol to sitting in the presidential palace with the president and vice president afghanistan having fled. this is a pathetic indictment on our national security apparatus on intelligence apparatus about how we are prosecuting our foreign involvement in this modern era. >> this is something that was known for a long time. we did not really know what we were doing.

the narrative was shaped by the defense department as they lied to the american people repeatedly, essentially for two decades. we have the 2000 page document that is tantamount we did not have an objective we did not acknowledge we had no idea what victory look like were lying to ourselves were lying to ourselves we said we were in nationbuilding. how would it and any other way given all of that? >> there's a prox strong difference between what the president did in his speech. withdrawal is highly justifiable i highly supportive when he tried to justify his withdrawal of the criticism is on the execution of the withdrawal. that has been an apt and catastrophic. the broader question you bring up is a great one, how are we

so bad at this? how are we so disconnected? this is fought by very small percentage of the population these are conflicts where congress has not had to put his stamp of approval on we have these endless authorizations for military force. we have let these conflicts run on a sense of momentum. when you try to bring that end, when you try to stop at this is the consequence when it's done with that any appreciation the facts on the ground. again with assessments that are tailored to a political objective rather than actual statements of fact. kennedy: the president was right about one thing today. when he said he did out to pass this onto a fifth administration. and i appreciate that. it seems as though these four administrations have known how swift the bleed out would be if we did in fact retract ourselves in the wrong way. and that is what happened here. it was bound to be messy under the best of circumstances.

but how did this inform us going forward? >> it was entirely bound to be necessary for there were no good options. just because there are no good options does not mean you stop the worst case scenario from going to fruition. going forward congress needs to have its own intelligence analytical capabilities. we can no longer being on the president and political branch has an agenda from shaping those priorities but resolve it with the rise of isis under the obama admin certainly tried soft pedal it if it did not meet the narrative. we need to have accurate statements. we need to have congress be accountable and we need to make sure at every stage we are actually having alignment of our strategic priorities rather than letting this national security apparatus run amok. kennedy: thank you very much congressman meijer. back in the u.s. politicians are pointing fingers at president biden for the crisis in kabul as you heard president biden is claiming

americans have died over the course of this forever year war. we spent about a trillion dollars to prop up a department so we have invested greatly in afghanistan. i don't think it is fair to joe biden or any of the other three administrations that were in power during that time to say we did not try to execute something that was sustainable. we can have lots of criticism about the intelligence with regard to the speed by which the taliban was able to take power over the last few days. but to my mind you cannot look away and start blaming america. you cannot look away from the incompetence and corruption in the afghan government and the afghan military pay. >> the american public should know about that they lied about they lied about all of it. what 800,000 troops were sent over there more than 2400 americans died and countless

civilians. so spike i will ask you, who is to blame here? >> the people to blame are the people who benefit from this. that is the military-industrial complex in the central bank. must be very clear that is the only reason afghanistan was invaded. this had nothing to do with getting bin laden. omar the original leader of the described bin laden as a chicken bone stuck in his throat. he wanted to get rid of him like anybody else. he's still trying to negotiate with the u.s. military by invading the country. bin laden within two months present pakistan. get the u.s. military remained in afghanistan even ten years after that than ten years after that to today but it's clearly not about getting bin laden. it's not creating democracy the afghan papers from two years ago said they knew it was all a lie. we are seeing this afghan military they built crumbled

>> you are right. what you have to do is say don't come but then you've got to make sure you follow-up with actions. you have to deport people. if someone should stay here under the law go ahead and let them stay. but if the law says you deport them and send them back then you have to do that. if you put 100 people in front of an immigration judge usually 88 -- 90% are going to be rejected. that means only ten or 12% are going to khmer so why are we allowing everyone to come in one 100% we should be allowing only ten or 12% in the rest of them should be sent back. we have to, we have to, we have to publicize them being deported so people can see it's not only the words but it's real action real people being deported who are not supposed to stay here under the law. kennedy: it's incredibly dangerous. it isn't dangerous for people in the best of health who are hardy adults.
