"the evening edit" starts right now. ♪. elizabeth: we begin tonight with the biden administration. reports coming in they will deploy special forces and helicopters to rescue americans in afghanistan. this days after britain and france already did that. the administration again warned trapped americans, avoid kabul airport. new reports of taliban and isis attacks there. a deadly firefight earlier today. the white house today says it still does not know exactly how many americans are trapped, nor exactly how many have been rescued. this as the taliban says no, the

"the evening edit" starts right now. ♪. elizabeth: welcome to the show. you're watching the fox business network. let's get right to the very latest on afghanistan. edward lawrence is live at the white house with more. good to see you, edward. liz, who wants the u.s. military spread across the entire country of afghanistan now working only within the limits of airport in kabul. the administration, white house is in conversations with the taliban to guarranty access for u.s. citizens and allies of the u.s. able to get through checkpoints to the airport. listen. >> we're in talks with the taliban on a daily basis through both political and security channels. i'm not going to get into the details of those discussions here to protect those discussions. reporter: reports from newspapers in the region say that passports and documents needed to get out of the country have been ripped up in some cases at those checkpoints. also a sniper firing outside of

the airport leaving one afghanistan soldier dead. who did it still a mystery. republicans are blaming all of this on president biden. >> it is unfathomable to me the lack of leadership and accountability, and by the way, general milley and general austin should, unless they understand that this is going really well, which is hard for me to imagine they do, they should resign over this. we haven't seen a failure of this magnitude probably in 50 years. reporter: we'll be watching the august 31st deadline. the taliban saying there will be consequences if the u.s. is not totally out by then. so far 37,000 people have been evacuated. about 18,000 in the past 24 hours. for only the third time in history the pentagon has issued an order for us air carriers, six of them, to operate or give, give 18 aircraft in order to help with this evacuation process. liz? elizabeth: edward lawrence,

thank you so much. of those who have been evacuated the white house is saying 2500 to 3700 are americans who have been evacuated. listen to a brother whose sister is trapped in afghanistan. she is the mother two of children. watch this. >> the president should know these american citizens are hiding in different houses. nobody is willing to help these citizens, same as my sister. these american citizens, and american allies and residents are soon either going to be executed by the taliban regime because they're behind enemy lines or either they're going to be dying out of hunger and thirst because they cannot get out of their house to get food and get water. there are thousands of them. elizabeth: joining us now iowa senator joni ernst. senator, good to have you on. your reaction to that sound bite? >> yes, thank you, liz, and that is heartbreaking, as someone who

searched overseas during the global war on terror we know how important it is to get these americans home and safe because these terrorists will stop at nothing with those stranded americans. so again, it is heartbreaking to hear these stories. to have jen psaki, the white house press secretary argue these americans are not stranded, we know that to be false. elizabeth: you're with senate armed services. the president on friday also said that american passport holders are not having any trouble getting past the checkpoints. we're beyond the dissembling, the false talking points, the topspin because americans see what is going on the ground. biden's nsa sullivan said threat of isis targeting americans at the airport is real, acute, persistent. british troops say the scene at kabul airport is the worst they have seen. should we go back in to take over bagram airport to do more

evacuations? >> that is absolutely something we need to be discussing right now with our allies. it is very important that we have multiple avenues of egress out of afghanistan to make sure we can remove as many americans as possible. the fact that this administration still wants to negotiate and bow down to the taliban, we can't, we cannot leave an american behind. the august 31st deadline is looming. i don't know how we're going to get americans out of the country if we don't start making some radical changes. whether that is expanding the perimeter. whether sending our special operators, others out to get americans, to bring them to the airport. whether it is securing the bagram airfield again. all of these things need to be considered in order to get americans home safely. elizabeth: now we've got reportedly 20 checkpoints set up. as many as 20, possibly more,

checkpoints into the airport set up by the taliban, isis and reports coming in that it is al qaeda too. that there is a power vacuum there. terrorists flooded in after they unplugged. biden administration had conditions, the trump deal with the taliban had conditions on it. a growing number of polls showing the president's approval rating is dropping. fox news is showing that. cbs, majority of americans say biden botched it. sit right there, i know you were with senate armed services, you served our country. i want you to listen to obama's former ambassador and joint chiefs chair and media blasting the president for extraordinary weakness, bumbling incompetence, misdirection and more. watch this. >> what i meant by that major, the way not only the how his decision was made to withdraw but then its execution which has

and african partners out of afghanistan. the president has known for months that he was going to pull our troops out. it makes no sense the way he took our troops out and left americans in the country. we have seen the rapid rise of the taliban. we will see this with other extremist organizations. as you stated isis, al-qaeda, other extremist organizations. they will just reconstitute. elizabeth: let's show pelosi's stuff happens moment when she spoke to a local tv station in her district out there in california. we've got new data showing what the taliban is now confiscating in terms of military hardware. you are going to see tens of thousands of war vehicles, 600,000 weapons and more. you know "new york times," abc, cbs, "washington post" is calling out the president for inaccurate comments about al qaeda not a threat. al qaeda not a threat. then senator biden in 2004 said

yeah, terrorists will be a threat if there is a power vacuum. so the thing is, the white house got rid of trump's deal which basically said, we'll release 5000 taliban prisoners, people are criticizing that. it was in exchange for a thousand afghan soldiers. it was in exchange for conditions, that if you touch a hair on an american's head we will retaliate. your reaction to the power vacuum the president created even knowing for years this would be a problem? >> this is an incredibly weak administration. we saw this in iraq a number of years ago during the obama administration where troops were pulled out leaving a vacuum for isis to gain strength. we see this right now. only the fact of the matter is the country of afghanistan fell to the taliban in a matter after week 1/2. we absolutely need to pull together with our allies, with

the brits, with the french, you name it. we need to come together. we need to work together. and we need to stablize this country so we can get our citizens out. it is imperative that we do that. we should leave no one behind and the president is so tone deaf and he comes across as uncaring and uncompassionate with those americans that have loved ones still in afghanistan. elizabeth: well americans are outraged about this. this is an extraordinary weakness. even the media and the democrats are saying this is historic callous disregard for what is going on. senator joni ernst, good to see you. thanks for coming on. thanks for your service to our country too. good to see you, senator. sure, same to you. former cia station chief dan hoffman, former afghan interpreter, janice, this is defining moment for president biden. he and his team getting hammered from around the world for his

the non-profit, no one left behind and station cleave and fox news contributor, cia station chief dan hoffman. reaction to the condemnation around the world, tony blair included calling biden his cut and run withdrawal imbecileic. your reaction to that. >> what is happening in afghanistan is a disaster. i didn't expect this thing would happen within a week, even though we trained the afghan army for 20 years but we didn't expect this, everything will collapse in within a week and it's a disaster i would say, yeah. elizabeth: we hear you. dan hoffman, the president is going to meet with the g7. our allies are really upset he is basically claiming they're not upset over what happened. they are saying they are upset.

watch former president trump here. watch this. >> biden's botched exit in afghanistan is the most astonishing display of gross incompetence by nation's leader perhaps at anytime, that anybody has ever seen. name another situation like this? vietnam looks like a master class in strategy compared to joe biden's catastrophe. this will go down as one of the great military defeats of all time. it did not have to happen that way. this is not a withdrawal. this was a total surrender, they surrendered for no reason. elizabeth: let's show the u.n. security council and nato signing off on trump's conditional deal, saying 5,000 taliban prisoners will be released. that is being called into question but 1000 afghan soldiers, dan, were also released. trump put conditions on the deal. no power vacuum. we will strike back if you touch

a hair on american's head. what do you say to this? >> well there were two parts to that doha deal which was negotiated in february of 2020. the first was that the taliban would sever their ties with al qaeda which they never did and the taliban would begin intraafghan dialogue in ernest because the idea we would have some reconciliation between taliban and the central government in kabul. neither one of those things happened. it certainly, we can ask a lot of hypothetical questions had president trump had the opportunity either to rework that deal or decide he wasn't going to withdraw our troops because the taliban did not adhere to the key points, the key provisions of that deal but they didn't. and president biden scrapped a few other deals president trump negotiated. he pursued different policies on the jcpoa, on the paris climate accord. he could have nixed this deal and pursued a better one for us. elizabeth: we hear you, dan. so there is criticism of the

president biden also downplaying the presence of al qaeda in afghanistan. why downplay it when china and the u.n. security council last year said you know, this is an issue, do not do a disorderly chaotic withdrawal, you will leave a power vacuum where al qaeda will step in? china warned about that last year. your reaction that president biden was downplaying that with abc news, the presence of al qaeda, what do you say to that? >> i think, my producer interviewed -- [inaudible]. the taliban will come back to the power. they will take over afghanistan and that will be a threat to the whole world and it happened. and now the taliban have the control, the control of whole afghanistan. it was not the right time for the u.s. to leave afghanistan

because the al qaeda and the taliban were more powerful than they were before and now they have access to everything, to the air force, to the, like advanced weapons. they have all american weapons and that is, that is a big, a bigger threat to the world, especially to america. yeah, that is not good. elizabeth: janice and his non-profit, dan, have been rescuing people out of afghanistan, including afghanistan interpreters. they're doing heroic work. you square what janis is doing with the biden team dissembling, flip-flopping, they're obsfucation and lying in real time critics say. what does this say to the world when you see this kind of behavior from the administration? >> well i just think the facts are going to speak a lot louder than the words. we have immediate crisis where

are our own citizens are behind enemy lines and the afghans who we had honor of serving with to keep our nation safe in harm's way. that reaction is not quick enough. we have a long term crisis, which the taliban controls afghanistan. it will be a terrorist sponsored state. we face a three-pronged threat from there, isis al qaeda and taliban, the biden think they ended an endless war i don't think that is what it was. we're in the cross-hairs of our enemies. they will look for us. we'll not have the opportunity like if we had intelligence footprint and ability to detect those threats way out in the boon. that is the legacy of the administration. we left afghanistan irony of ironies on eve of 9/11 a more clear and present danger to our nation than ever before.

elizabeth: let's watch the the n team dissemble, prevaricate in real time and contradict each other including the president. watch this. >> continues to be the case that many afghans and many american citizens and lawful permanent residents as well have not been able to get through. are you denying, is the administration denying that the president did earlier that is the case? >> i don't think anyone is denying the reports that are out there. it was not just americans he talked about that have been harassed, in some cases beaten. we don't believe it's a very large number. so by and large most americans are having no problems that we're aware of. it is difficult for us to speak to reports that are anecdotal, that may be on social media. elizabeth: so janis, downplaying, anecdotal stuff what we're hearing out of the

white house. is this true what is going on at kabul airport? there are 20 checkpoints run by terrorists. what do you say? >> to be honest with you i'm receiving a lot of calls from afghan interpreters trying to get to the airport but there are more than even 20 checkpoints. it is very hard. 20 checkpoints of taliban plus hundreds of thousands of people who heard americans are taking relative to the united states and everybody rushed to the airport. they make it harder to all the eligible people to come there, for example, the passport holders, green cardholders, visa holders, they made it harder for them to make it to the gate. elizabeth: we hear you. thanks for your hard work. dan hoffman, thanks for your service to our country. great to have you both on. see you both again.

threat. you have to vote for the budget rule f you vote against it, you're voting against women, women of color. they simply don't have the votes. the reason why they don't have the votes right now because these moderate members, back home in their congressional districts they're hearing from the people they represent. people are upset with all these crises going on, whether the inflation crisis, whether the biden border energy crisis or whether it is the biden afghanistan crisis. and guess what, this budget resolution they have right now only makes all of those crises even worse? $68 worth of spending. amnesty to illegals. talk about putting gas on inflation fire, that is what this bill will do. it will cost every american to pay more for gas for their car, food on the table, clothes on their backs. that is why they're having problem getting votes. >> they don't have the votes in the senate.

representatives to what they have proposed in bernie's budget right now. you know what $85 trillion worth of spending is? that is more than all of the income taxes paid since our country was founded. this bill alone will create $17 trillion to the debt. that is more than gdp of every country in the world but the united states. americans are fed up and they don't want another crisis. elizabeth: got it. you know the moderates are saying move on infrastructure. trump even with the republicans controlling both chambers of congress did not get infrastructure. they're saying do just infrastructure, do that now. they could lose on everything and biden agenda hit as wall. how is it build back better to raise our taxes higher than we see in europe? that is what the biden team and democrats want to do. how is it build back better to raise taxes on 401(k)s and iras and savings accounts, how is that build back better? >> it is not.

♪. elizabeth: let's -- fox news medical contributor dr. marty makary. good to see you, doctor. we'll have more vaccine mandates -- now that the fda given full approval to pfizer for its vaccine. the government doesn't have a true vaccine mandate for government workers. if you are not vaccinated you have to wear a mask and get regularly tested. will we see top down vaccine mandates for everybody? >> probably. a lot of company are talking about it. local governments are talking about it. branches in the u.s. government are drawing up plans. the problem with mandates you're ignoring natural immunity with majority of these. they take a hard-line approach with low risk individuals with

teenagers who may benefit from one dose and not two and not flexible interval. waiting three months may be ideal interval for the second dose. when you have the mandates you have to get them done by a certain time period. that is not ideal. elizabeth: france and europe are doing monoclonal free antibodies for people. unclear why we're not pushing on that. we got news moments ago that chuck schumer and the progressive left are really bullying the centrist moderates you have to do all of our spending or you will be painted as racists and anti-women. so this is top-down bullying but doctor, we have more rules for thee, not for me. nancy pelosi threatening people with fines if they don't wear their masks including members of congress. doctor, she was caught a at a fund-raising event in napa valley not wearing masks. dozens of people not wearing masks. no social distancing.

they bully everybody and enjoying themselves, what do you say about that. >> they enjoy themselves without masks that is what everybody should be doing, except if you're gathering indoor with people not vaccinated but the idea that we have to be so strict and harsh requiring every other person besides ourselves to wear a mask, these are no the arguments our country should be having right now. our problem is not a cloth mask on a 3-year-old or some group of fully vaccinated people enjoying themselves without a mask. our problem that 10 to 15% of non-immune adults have not been vaccinated. that is where we should encourage everybody right now to get vaccinated that. is where we should put all of our efforts. elizabeth: watch former president donald trump, let's listen to how he handled saying to people get vaccinated. watch him at his rally on saturday in alabama. watch this? >> and you know what? i believe totally in your freedoms, i do, you have to do what you have to do but i recommend take the vaccines.

♪. elizabeth: let's welcome back to the show former congressman and fox news contributor jason chaffetz. it is great to have you back on. okay, lawyer mark elias, a top player in the trump-russia probe, he is the guy who arranged the funding for the anti-trump steele dossier, the opposition research that went after trump with botched information. he left the perkins-coie law firm to create his firm. jonathan turley says this is telling. this is ahead of the durham report that this guy is leaving. what do you say about it? >> well mark elias has taken on

a lot of different rolls. he has tens of millions of dollars in billings. he represented the democratic party. he represented hillary clinton. he is really the fixer for the democratic side of the aisle. the way you get around a lot of the disclosure laws is to pay a law firm, the law firm then goes and does some of the dirty work. so the question here was that money, the 10 plus million dollars that went to perkins-coie, that mark elias was directing did that then go to fund this bogus document that created impetus of the fbi to do what it did to go after donald trump and it seems like it was a set-up? and that is the big question. so now that you have mark elias leaving perkins-coie, there are some speculating the reason he is leaving, they know there are some bad things happening and i think taking something like 17 attorneys out of perkins

perkins-coie out of his legal firm and that may be foreshadowing that the report is on our doorstep. elizabeth: the reports are coming that john durham is taking criminal charges to a grand jury in the botched trump-russia probe. reports are that mark elias is the middleman. he is the guy that arranged the middleman funding that went through his law firm to fusion gps to the anti-trump opposition research that the doj watchdog said was totally flawed, embellished, filled with speculation. you're saying this fact, him as middleman, was hidden not revealed in federal election filings. is that a problem? >> he was fairly public out there but the way you get around a lot of these individual expenditures is, you have to itemize how you're expending money in a political campaign but if you pour as they did in the hillary clinton campaign ten plus million dollars into a law firm, then the law firm goes out

and does all of this stuff, then there is no disclosure. i'm saying that people on both sides of the aisle do that. it is the way that at the get around this but the question i think for federal law enforcement is, did they use this money to plant these stories that therefore could be turned around and be the impetus for a probe into donald trump? if it is fiction, if they made it up, if they provided the fbi bogus information, stuff they knew was a lie that they fabricated and it was paid for to do such, then you're breaking some federal laws. that's the big question. elizabeth: yeah. it is knowingly committing perjury using false information planted inside of the justice deep and the fbi to get powerful fisa wiretaps meant for terrorists to go after citizens on the trump campaign. this could be about potential perjury right, before the fisa court?

>> exactly. a whole bunch of things. would you think that the court would stand up for itself. thus far they haven't. you have director comey and others who signed these fisa warrants. at the very top of it is john ratcliffe, the former director of national intelligence, somebody who was on the intel committee has said, at the very top of this application it says verified. people like james comey and others said no, i didn't verify it. you would think there are legal consequences, losing your law license something along the way if not prosecution. so far the department of justice is fairly impotent in terms of actually prosecuting one of their own. they just won't go there. elizabeth: misleading congress. jason chaffetz, it is good to see you. thanks for joining us. up next former top border official ron vitiello. we have this story, house conservatives demand homeland security secretary mayorkas secure the border saying thousands of terrorists were

♪ elizabeth: joining us now, former acting i.c.e. director ron vitiello. should we shut the border now? that's the debate. to house conservatives demand secretary mayorkas secure the border. should we shut it now? one side says that's an overreaction, the other side says do it now. what do you say? >> well, we should certainly do better as it relates to the policy of encouraging people to bring their children or families to the border. we know that terrorists, cartels are going to exploit all our weakness. so we can put policies back in place, congress could write laws and legislate the migrant protection program, or we could do something to stop this crush of humanity that we're seeing on

television each and every day at the border, well over a billion apprehensions that we passed in june, and no end in sight. more people coming from more places all over the globe on top of the pandemic, on top of, you know, the disaster that's ongoing in afghanistan. elizabeth: yeah. security officials, some of them say, yes, shut it down now. this feels like 1998 again when the clinton administration was apprised of the fact that al-qaeda was going to move against us, and they were warning, there was the earlier, the first world trade center attack, then 9/11. "the new york times" already reporting migrants are more than a 150 countries have already crossed. do you think we should shut it down now, yes or no? >> yes. we should sure the border in every way possible. what we're seeing on the southwest border will and is being exploited by criminal

cartels, and there's no reason to think others won't do the same thing. elizabeth: all right. what was your reaction when you heard the supreme court put a temporary hold on that lower court decision that ordered the biden administration to reinstate trump's remain in mexico policy? it look like the supreme court is going to take this on. what's your reaction to this story? >> well, i'm eager for them to take it on. i'm glad states like texas are fighting on all of our behalves to reinstate policies that would, that were preventing this surge, this crush of humanity that we're seeing at the border every day now. the migrant protection protocols were instituted with mexico in january of 2019. it took several months and, in fact, a threat of terrorists -- tear -- a threat of tariffs with mexico. but we went into the spring of '20 with unprecedented lows in crossings and activity because of that program. and so reinstating it via the

supreme court would be a way for us to get out of the disaster that we're in on our southwest border right now. elizabeth: you know, americans feel for refugees. they're an open arms country about immigration. they want to take in people. the problem is when people do it illegally, they get killed along the way, they get assaulted along the way, thousands of people. so is, you know, the other thing too is, ron, up until about seven, eight years ago, it was only migrants from mexico illegally crossing, then it became central america, then it became south america. now it's more than 150 countries including the middle east, asia and eastern europe. that's the trend. what do you say to that? >> yes. this problem is very different than it was a couple of decades ago when most of the traffic along the southwest border was people from mexico. now the northern triangle heavily predominates the numbers, and 150 other countries as well.

that just proves what we know about these policies. we've sent a signal across the globe for people to come to the border now, because we were supposed to be -- it's not fair to the people who are waiting in line, it's not fair to the people who get trafficked on the way with, it's not fair to border communities who are inundated with this traffic and people coming across the border with inadequate facilities ask and inadequate medical care. it's not fair to them. so getting a handle on that border sooner than later is in all of our interest. elizabeth: are you worried about them crossing, coming in through panama and up? i mean, they're coming in via, you know, that a terrorist could a pay a human smuggler to say get me in? are you worried about that? >> that's a challenge. that's a challenge. it's what we're seeing now, if you make it into this hemisphere, you're quite likely to make it across the u.s./mexico border. and so when you have the chaos that's ongoing right now and you have the border patrol
