david: we have an alert much the president announcing he will talk about the withdrawal from afghanistan tomorrow. for now i will report it was unanimous recommendation of the joint chiefs and all commanders on the ground to end our air mission as planned. their view ending the military mission was best way to protect lives of our troops and secure the prospect of civilian departures. their fate is in the hands of the taliban. elizabeth: we are in breaking news mode. the last plane carrying u.s. troops has left afghanistan after 20 years. heart break though. the pentagon is now saying they could not accommodate hundreds of americans who wanted to leave but could not get out. now the withdrawal is over. americans still remain there the administration says it did everything they could to get them out. there is real debate and controversy over that. this is a real, active, very high threat of terrorism around

the kabul airport. five rockets fired at the airport. the u.s. military intercepted one. three missed targets. one landed inside of kabul airport. none caused any damage or fatalities. this as the administration rapidly losing diplomatic leverage with the taliban by the hour. again hundreds of americans the pentagon saying still stranded. they couldn't get them out. thousands of afghan allies stranded too. thousands of isis, al qaeda terrorists free roaming the country. ashley webster live with the latest in germany outside after u.s. air force base where evacuation flights are arriving out of kabul. ashley, good to see you. reporter: good to see you, liz, thank you. now just after midnight local time. we're continuing to hear planes fly above us as they come in and out of ramstein air force base here in germany. interestingly, liz, no u.s.

citizens were on the last five military flights out of kabul. in the meantime thousands of refugees continue to be processed here in germany. 14,300 evacuees in total. thousands coming in. thousands leaving on separate commercial flights to the united states. as you mentioned, general frank mckenzie talking earlier tonight saying, talking about the disappointment of not being able to get all u.s. citizens out of afghanistan. take a listen. >> there is a lot of heartbreak associated with this departure. we did not get everybody out that we wanted to get out. i think if we stayed another 10 days we wouldn't have gotten everybody out we wanted to get out and there will still be people disappointed with that. reporter: liz with, the thousands of evacuees here, the other decision, how do you vet the refugees. as many as 20% have no documentation, nothing at all. very difficult to do security backgrounds on those

individuals. that effort is continuing at the airbase here in germany. we'll be on the base tomorrow to see how the process is done before the refugees are sent to america to various bases around the country. liz, back to you. elizabeth: good to see you, ashley, thanks for the terrific journalism. reporter: thank you. elizabeth: heartbreak, they could not get out as ashley reported, hundreds of americans who wanted to leave 69 growing calls from democrats and republicans demanding the president delay the withdrawal until all americans are safely evacuated. keep troops there. the pentagon saying that is not doable. leader mccarthy a long shot with a bill that needs 218 votes. this is serious tragedy. joining us florida congressman michael waltz and steve capper a naval expert.

congressman, they couldn't get hundreds of americans who wanted to get out, hundreds of americans who wanted to leave, thousands of afghan allies too. what do you say to this. >> i say president biden lied to the american people. he said he would get everybody out and he didn't. just this morning i was having a back and forth with two american citizens outside of the gate at kabul international with their children and couldn't get in. american citizens left behind. thankfully congressional offices, non-profits, veterans groups, have stepped up in this vacuum of leadership coming from this administration and we're trying to smuggle them out. you know what? this notion that we can trust the taliban, they have held an american hostage for the last year. his name is mark treic. he is a navy veteran. they haven't let him go. they are demanding concessions. they want things from us. we have handed them several hundred more hostages.

every time they want international recognition, foreign currency, economic aid, they can walk down the street to take another one. this is the biggest disaster of this generation and i am just grief-stricken, heartbroken and mad. it didn't have to be this way. elizabeth: paul, we've never seen anything like this, breaking news secretary of state antony blinken will be speaking at this hour. the president will address the nation tomorrow. the news coming in. what's your reaction to the pentagon saying this is heartbreak? they couldn't get americans out who wanted to get out. by the way news coming in, senator ron johnson, senate permanent subcommittee on investigations, paul he is saying hundreds of americans on a bus tried to get into kabul airport but they were diverted away. what do you say to that? >> terrible failure. the first obligation of government is to insure the safety and security of its citizens and we were unable to do that. we were also unable to guarranty the security of our afghan partners who worked with us over

the past 10 years often at risk to themselves. this is a moral failure. it will also have strategic ramifications. our partners and our friends and also our enemies need to understand we're competent and credible. our friends need to trust us and enemies need to fear us. unfortunately events like these really shake the trust, also strategically i think. elizabeth: you know, congressman, where is the hair on fire moment for nancy pelosi? why is she, why isn't she calling the house back in? every government agency is working on afghanistan is now in d.c. but not the house. we have a growing number of republicans one out of 10 house republicans, four republican senators calling for biden to resign or be impeached. we have protests at the white house saying don't trust the taliban. secretary of state, congressman says, we'll be looking to do diplomacy with the taliban to get americans out after the deadline? why did we give the power to the

taliban? >> where is nancy pelosi, right? the british parliament came in. the german parliament. the british parliament condemned biden for putting them in this position as an ally. but at the end of the day you're going to hear in the next few days this narrative that there is kind of good terrorists and bad terrorists. we can work with the taliban. they have made us assurances. they made us promises. i don't trust the taliban as far as i can throw them. this administration believes they have economic leverage. that will get flipped on its head. what the taliban are is hostages. they have a long history of doing this. remember, liz, this is the the same team around biden that was around barack obama, that did because -- benghazi, the bergdahl trade, led us out of iraq to led to isis attacks around the world, the iran deal. they believe they can appease their way, concede their way out

of this problem. the terrorists will take advantage after advantage, advantage. what happens in afghanistan doesn't stay in afghanistan. that terrorism will follow us home. the america is much less safe. future american soldiers will have to go back to deal with this problem. elizabeth: the polls show americans do not like that the biden administration is trying to normalize, normalize relations with the taliban. the taliban has killed hundreds of americans. they just overthrew a government. that is elected government. >> that's right. >> new abc itch soes poll, more than eight in 10 say keep american troops there until every american is back home. pentagon says that is not doable. what do you say? why is that not doable. >> the troops need to stay as long as to make as many

evacuations we can possibly to get out and citizens and afghans who worked with us. if you have any doubt about the taliban and the relationship with terrorism look who they have put in charge of security in kabul. they put the haqqani network in charge of security in kabul. the haqqani network is one of the most dangerous organizations in afghanistan and probably around the world. no question that relationship between taliban and terrorism remains that will have ramification. afghanistan will likely become springboard for international terrorist attacks. likely a conduit for radicalizing ideology. and destablizing -- elizabeth: you know, here's the thing, you know what paul is talking about, congressman, you know, jen psaki is the white house press secretary is trying to downplay and claim no one anticipated that afghanistan would fall as rapidly as it did when embassy workers inside of afghanistan warned yeah, it will

collapse. the cia was saying over last year it will collapse if the troops pull out. >> yeah. elizabeth: the list of mistakes are long. they surrendered bagram airbase. what other mistakes do you see they made? >> that is just a bunch of spin and a bunch of garbage. she should be ashamed of herself. republican democrat members of congress started back in april, as soon as biden made this decision, held press conferences, made calls and said this is not going to hold. you have to begin this evacuation right now. you are handing these people a death sentence if you leave them behind. they didn't even set up an inneragency task force within their own bureaucracy until june. and you're right, the intelligence was clear and any veteran who had worked there knew if you yank the air support, logistic support, intelligence support and maintenance support away from the afghan army all at once, that they were likely to fail. so this was absolutely

predictable. it was preventable. it was avoidable. this blood is going to be on this administration's hands, not just now but for future attacks on the homeland and then american soldiers that have to go back to deal with it. that is what makes me so mad. elizabeth: but congressman, the pentagon spokesman is saying quote it is not important to get into deliberations of why the evacuations were delayed, not important when now hundreds of americans are stranded. you know, and also the uk in nato said they made a mistake by telegraphing, broadcasting to the world an artificial set deadline set in stone when that is a recipe for chaos. we had president biden yesterday with the first lady paying respects to the 13 troops killed in last week's terror bombing in afghanistan. marines tweeted a photo of the flag draped transfer cases, caption, gone but never forgotten. youngest 21, oldest 31. they died for a war when they

were born 20 years ago. a deeply emotional day. the president, congressman, for appearing to look at his watch during the ceremony. what is reaction to that, final word? >> you have a whole team around a president that none of them have ever served. they're academics, they're political scientists, they don't have a speck of middle east dirt under their fingernails. that is what you're seeing unfold just like the list of other calamities that we saw unfold before from benghazi to bergdahl, to the rise of isis. it is the same team. they continue to make the same mistakes that if we're just nice enough to the adversaries they will be nice back. america is a biggest part of the problem in the world. let's pull that back. and you know, we're not even year into this administration and look at these disasters. if they're not going to lead congress will. we'll continue to fight this fight. we'll get our people home. elizabeth: congressman michael waltz, paul capper, thank you so much for joining us.

americans wanted to get out. it is heart-break, they couldn't be accommodated that is the story. take you to an update on this story, hurricane ida blasting onshore, the fifth most powerful ever to hit the u.s. on the anniversary of hurricane katrina. hitting in the same region of the country. grady trimble is live for us with more. grady. reporter: liz, ida left a wake of destruction in its path. it has been a day of assessing the damage, cleanup and most critically search-and-rescue missions. we just got word from the governor's office that about 190 people were rescued in three parishes surrounding the new orleans area that has been critical over the last several hours. about 3:00 this morning it when it was finally safe enough for those rescue crews to get out even though people had been calling for them throughout the night t was just too dangerous for them to go outside at that

time. as soon as they could, as soon as the sun came up this morning, they went out, started with the rescues and searches. there are around 5000 national guard members from the state of louisiana here. there are more coming from other states to help out as well. power outages are another huge story. more than a million people are without power right now. that is about half of the state of louisiana. about all of the southeastern portion of the state is without power and there are 25,000 power crews here trying to help restore that. they also have come from all over the country to assist in this. so, liz, if there is any silver lining in all of this the governor said it is that none of the levees breached. you mentioned hurricane katrina. that was a huge problem last time around that was not the case this time but still there are reports of two people who died in this hurricane and potentially more to come. elizabeth: grady trimble, we'll

come back to you. we'll stay on that story too. thank you so much for your reporting, grady trimble, outside of new orleans. bring in energy analyst phil flynn. phil, you heard the news about the incredibly destructive hurricane. tens of thousands without power. we're hearing new orleans could be without power for weeks that means looting. >> it does. it is a very scary situation. let's just hope we get people there to protect as many people as we can because this could be a major issue with these power outages and the city could go crazy. we look at it from an energy viewpoint you know. from the country and its impact on the economy but you know the human toll is also very important. i think there is a lot of fear right now. i heard reports that people can't get cell phone services. they can't call 911. all of these things are happening. elizabeth: you know talk to us about the importance of the u.s.

energy sector in light of these hurricanes, right? the numbers are pretty insignificant about hurricane ida pummeling the u.s. gulf coast oil and gas sector, knocking out daily output equivalent to what mexico puts out, right? >> yeah. >> gas prices, there is five to 10 cents a gallon. talk to us about that in light of what is going on in the middle east and all of this. talk to us. go ahead. >> when you look at what is going on here, listen the importance of the u.s. energy sector and right now this storm hit a blow right in the heart of it, right in new orleans where you know, port fourchon took a terrible hit and that is where we launch a lot of our offshore operations. we're talking about millions of barrels of crude production every day, refining capacity for millions of barrels of gasoline. you know, but we are getting some good news coming across the wires right now. i think this will be a long time before we get back to normal.

right now. democrats in the house need to step forward who privately are telling us how god awful this evacuation is and how damaging it is. they need to step forward and challenge the speaker. join with us, let's go back to congress as leader mccarthy has said. let us force this white house to stay there and get our americans and allies out. right now it think that is our best avenue. elizabeth: congressman, senator ron johnson on the permanent subcommittee on investigation is saying demanding that the administration turn over internal documents, emails, text messages about why a bus with an estimated 400 americans were turned away from kabul airport. on the house side, will you be sending off requests like that to the administration? >> short answer is yes. it is going to join an earlier request from a few days ago from republican leaders both in the

house and our committees. you know, directing this administration to keep those documents, preserve those documents, about this whole evacuation and the decision-making. we are going to get to the bottom of it. i don't know if democrats will join us now. certainly when we take back the house we will. so it is important, look, can this story get any worse? every day and again this president, boy he betrayed this country i think in a way many of us never thought we would see. elizabeth: yeah it is unexpected and -- recap the breaking news, secretary of state antony blinken supposed to speak this hour. now apparently delayed. questions rise whether he will take questions from the press as the pentagon is reporting none of hundreds of americans who wanted to leave made it to kabul airport. they were from the able to evacuate americans who wanted to leave. we have that, now the

tax-and-spend bill is in jeopardy. we have democrats, congressman on the fence bit. the swing district democrats saying this is a disaster what is going on. they don't want to be associated with what the tax-and-spend bill is about. the far left is going to fight over infrastructure. so this may not happen either. what is your forecast on that? >> so two things. i think they're going on right now, one democrats in the house are feeling their oats. speaker pelosi just trounced those few moderate democrats who stood up to challenge her. i think there is a lot of infighting going on right now. other thing house democrats see this surrender in afghanistan. the last thing we need right now is an economic surrender to china, to the rest of the world. these tax hikes are going to land on small businesses, the middle class and no question, will drive u.s. jobs overseas. democrats are starting to understand it. elizabeth: congressman kevin brady, it was an honor to have

incapable. what is really sickening is when our own secretary of defense said we did not have the capabilities to escort american citizens through the taliban cordon around the airport. and yet we didn't have those capabilities why does the united kingdom and why did france have those capabilities? from the very get-go why did they allow an arbitrary date of august 31st to be issued by the, by the taliban, an enemy, a terrorist group and now is in charge of most of the country, harkening back to 20 years ago, which gave us 9/11? and why in the world did this inept biden administration allow bagram airbase to be given away, an easily defendable, two runway, 10,000 feet long runways, be given up? why did they leave $85 billion of equipment, weaponry, there

for our enemies to get? and why on earth would they have given lists of american citizens who were still there, green cardholders and then our afghan allies? and quite frankly it is inexcusable to leave americans there in afghanistan? elizabeth: we got to move on to this, because that is a credibility crisis there is another separate credibility crisis erupting over the new "washington post" story. it doesn't look good for dr. fauci. his stonewalling and attacking senator rand paul. that is what is at stake. "the washington post" did a deep dive, found dr. fauci and nih approved $50 million for 18 dangerous gain of function supervirus research since 2012. dr. fauci denying that. this is supervirus research. it is about genetically engineering viruses to create you novak scenes and treatments but it is at the center of what

could have caused the pandemic. the post is also saying that the nih director and dr. fauci weakened oversight of a committee a board that was going to do controls of this research. they avoided accountability by making up their own definition what is is and what is not gain of function research. they basically undercut the overnight committee to fast track the research by giving themselves veto power over it. senator rand paul said that was going on but dr. fauci denied it. now "the washington post" is saying effectively that yes, senator paul was saying was correct. what do you think? >> i new senator paul was correct to begin with. dr. fauci is consistently inconsistent. he lied to the congress and lied to the american people. he taken up every leftist
