"the washington post" calling it a, quote, moral disaster. we've got a lot of stories for you tonight. a growing number of generals, and military experts warn that the president actively misled the public yesterday on the botched pullout on former president trump's deal. lawmakers also warning more and more americans are calling them, desperately saying the taliban is blocking them from leaving.

also this story, look at this, the white house is not telling the truth. that is what lawmakers are saying that it is low-balling the real number of americans still trapped behind terror lines and also this, white house press secretary jen psaki today refused to answer questions about the president, pressuring the former leader of afghanistan in july to, quote, change the perception to the media around the world. make it look like the taliban was losing, quote, whether true or not. edward lawrence, lynch at white house with more. edward, good to see you. >> reporter: hey liz, the president trying to project confidence and power that the americans will help countries that the u.s. helps. he met with the ukrainian president as reuters released transcript you referred to, the last call on july 23rd between president biden and president of afghanistan. president biden said true or not the president of afghanistan should project a picture that he is winning. so today at the pentagon the

general joint chiefs of staff chairman general mark milley that he understands pain and inker from veterans as well as their families. listen. >> we're going to learn from this experience as a military. how we got to this moment in afghanistan will be analyzed and studied foreyears to come. we in the military will approach this with humility, transparency and candor. there are many tactical operationsal, strategic lessons to be learned. reporter: after describing what a ruthless group the taliban is, the general says it is possible the u.s. might work with the taliban again, against isis-k. now the process of moving 124,000 evacuees into the united states as started some worry the pace let terrorists slip through. >> i can absolutely assure you that no one is coming into the united states of america who is not been through a thorough screening and background check process.

reporter: fox news did confirm that a flight landed in d.c. within the last seven days that flight sat there for 10 hours because the people on board were not vetted until they were here on the tarmac in that plane, back to you. elizabeth: edward lawrence thank you for your reporting. good to see you. joining me now, senator dan sullivan of armed services and veterans affairs. also the senator is a marine corps reserve colonel. back with us too, former national security advisor to vice president michael pence. he is retired u.s. army lieutenant-general keith kellogg. good to have both of you on. first to you, senator, white house press secretary refusing to answer questions that the president was misleading the public. he knew the taliban was about to take over but basically wanted to make the withdrawal go down better with the public saying to the leader of afghanistan, change perception, change. narrative, make it look like to the media around the world the taliban is losing whether true

or not. senator, your reaction to that story? >> liz, this is just part of the ongoing holiday from reality that the president has and the white house has and his inability to accept any responsibility to what is clearly a huge foreign policy fiasco for our country. you know, this is the new report. we're going too look into that. but there are other things clearly dramatic indications just what a fiasco this is. we have hundreds of american citizens who are stuck behind taliban lines. we have nato allies who are furious with us feel betrayed. clearly right now, afghanistan has once again become an international safe haven for terrorism. that was the whole reason we went to afghanistan after 9/11 to prevent that. now there is no doubt that it is jihad central and so this is a fiasco that we need to look into when we get back in the u.s. senate. we're going to do that.

elizabeth: and it is also questioned whether or not this phone call was an impeachable offense and how it stacks up with trump's phone call to the leader of ukraine. general, reuters is also reporting, general, that another call was leaked, that the chair of the joint chiefs of staff, general mark milley told the afghan leader, quote, try to turn that narrative around of taliban momentum and victory. the nsa sullivan was on the call too. your reaction to this angle of the story as well? >> yeah. thanks, liz, for having me. i do appreciate it. look, when you heard those reports come out today about general milley and also the president of the united states this is the same president who stood in front of the american people and told them that the probability and possibility of an imminent collapse in afghanistan was not there. he talked about the size of the afghan army and capability that he had but in the back of his mind he had to know according to the reports that it was failing and he didn't tell the american

people to that. he lied to the american people that is the only way you can put it. it is disappointing that the same thing can be said about chairman millie. he knew about it as well. i don't know what kind of advice he was giving the president but i've been in the situation room with president trump in the oval office. he was very frank and heard frank discussions and leveled with the american people. i don't think that is happening right now. elizabeth: to the general's point, senator, white house officials now telling "politico" that they are quote, appalled that americans had been abandoned, literally horrified we left americans there. we have failed the mission. the mission isn't done. it is not over. and so the president was not truthful. he was defiant yesterday he said the pullout was smooth and an extraordinary success. 13 troops dead. didn't deliver a truthful account ofac d d and cou ou ou thods ofcamecansnst hind. hi..ur tak urakak o t o thehese house

with the american people. there needs to be accountability and that is what we'll be focused on in the congress. elizabeth: you know, too -- to the senator's point the general and his team may want to move on but to critics any future atrocity in afghanistan will be on the president's hands. the list of mistakes are long. let's show the list of the mistakes military officials are telling us happen. presidents bush, obama, and trump would never have knowingly left any american or green card holder behind in the hands of terrorists. the thinking is, general, this nation must emphatically reject president biden did so no future president will ever do this again. what do you say? >> this is something that should not have happened. during the trump administration we came up with a pretty good plan going forward. it is public record. you can check it out. anybody can look at it.

that he is changing what was actual happening on the ground. we in fact had a plan a good plan to go forward, he is telling the people an untruth. he is trying to rewrite history. that will not go well for him going forward. here is what he has done. he came out yesterday, basically told the american people, if we get out 90% of the americans that is pretty good. i don't buy that. i think we need to get every single american to come out. when we talk about accountability out there, somebody has to be accountable for what we did when we went into afghanistan and the evacuation mission and push out a perimeter. we abandoned americans. we abandoned allies. we ended up losing three, 13 great americans in a bombing incident. we made the decision, we, the united states of america, not to allow our military to push that perimeter out. there should be some accountability. that needs to be done in the near term to find out who made those decisions and why were

those decisions made. elizabeth: general, to the general's point, senator, how will the accountability come forward? is it a high crime and misdemeanor, is it an impeach able offense, for a president tell the leader of country, actively mislead the world, say the taliban are losing? are there high crimes and misdemeanors the president's action took? what do you say, senator? >> there clearly needs to be accountability. that is what we need to do. we need to focus on what the general said, who made what decisions and when, who is telling mistooths to the american people. to me, liz, that is much bigger issue. that is the really important issue. right now i think the focus needs to be not just the accountability, getting these americans home safely but also our country needs to be ready. our adversaries are going to be taking the measure of this president, the credibility of this administration is sinking

dramatically and we need to be ready when our adversaries, russia, china, iran will be testing us. whether the iranians with regard to israel or china already done some sabre-rattling with regard to taiwan. russia is always looking at the baltics. we need to be ready, we need to be strong because right now the credibility of the biden administration is clearly going to be tested. i think that is something we have to focus on in the immediate future. elizabeth: general, final word from you, pentagon, chair of joint chiefs of staff, the administration will work with the taliban to shut down isis. the nearest staging area of a fly over. there is no troop presence by the way. the nearest stagerring area is seven hours away. what is the reaction to that general, final word? >> my frustration this did not have to happen, this, what you're watching was not, was in fact avoidable going forward. for them to say that i find it

elizabeth: back with us now, congressman brian mast of house foreign affairs. congressman, stories are coming out. deal with this text messages surfacing between soldiers and troops in afghanistan. soldiers texting each other saying they were shocked to be abandoning american citizens. texts reported by john solomon, that americans were waving passports at kabul airport saying they were americans. they were blocked from leaving. those flights left empty. what do you say to this story? >> we said it over and over and over again. as soldiers part of what is sown into us. we don't leave our men behind. we don't leave our men behind.

i have literally heard nothing weighing more greatly on the shoulders of our soldiers that speak to me personally, calling me, that i see in person than the belief and the understanding that both americans and those that we were directly in combat with shoulder to shoulder with left behind. elizabeth: the powe lit co-reporting white house -- "politico" is leaking that white house official appalled, upset that white house abandoned people behind enemy lines. lindsey graham, representative michael mccaul, congressman ronny jackson say the numbers of americans left behind is much higher. it is not hundreds. it could be thousands. when you look at the math, congressman, the math is kind of curious here. two weeks ago press secretary jen psaki and the pentagon spokesman were saying 10,000, 15,000 u.s. americans stranded.

if you extract 6,000 that were evacuated, we're talking potentially thousands still stranded. what are you saying? >> you look at the math exactly as many of us are asking. you gave us these numbers. you told us you have flown out these numbers. you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure out a pretty big gap is not being answered. this goes to the point many of us have been saying. every single time the administration steps up to the microphone they are feeding us a lie. that is what they are doing. when president biden says let me be clear, that is an indication that he is about to tell the american people some kind of lie. it happened over and over and over again. you know there is a lot of speculation by many this president must have dementia or something that might have to do with the math. if look press conference, after press conference he keeps changing story and i think this is guy is more likely

schizophrenic. elizabeth: jake sullivan said on cnn several thousand americans were left there. we also left behind u.s. funded government-backed journalists for voice of america, radio liberty and radio free europe have been stranded there, behind terror lines. dozens of sacramento students in afghanistan stranded. listen to this exchange. we know the president yesterday said 10% of americans were left behind. white house racing to dial back on that. we have a curious kind of talking point problem, congressman with the white house officials stepping on each other's lines. watch this exchange. >> you have americans that get stranded in countries all the time. >> i think it is irresponsible to say americans that are stranded. they are not. elizabeth: what do you say to that? >> one, this is no joke. these people will be hung. they will be tortured. they will be stabbed.

they will be choked by electrical wires. they will be stoned. this is as serious as it gets and when you look at their inability to one, assess the situation and to number two, convey it truthfully, the absence of leadership right there is exactly what got us into this situation. we have all heard the saying, peace through strength. that's what led us to a situation where we were down to 2500 u.s. troops in afghanistan without anybody being killed in a year, year-and-a-half. to a situation where there is no peace because there was absolutely no strength. they have been intimidated from beginning to end, from the time that they're leaving to leaving the embassy, leaving the airbase, to everything else about it. instead of simply being americans, we'll say it when, how, and why we choose and you will suck it up and take it pause we swing the bigger bat. that is the problem that got us

they could take kabul and we would take the airport. buses, many people on foot were welded shut gates, waving american passports trying to get in, being told by the state department turn around and go back. it is unconscionable and criminal. elizabeth: we're hearing sources that americans showed up at the gate and they were blocked. that flights left without them. they were waving passports that we are americans, get us on the flights. officials stopped them. that is unclear why that happened, sir. paula knauss warned us the situation at the kabul airport was a mess, getting out of control. president is now saying defeet is now victory. basically the blaming the failure what happened on everybody else. the biden team is making dubious statements like nsa sullivan biden made the judgment, quote, we are more likely to get americans and allies out now by

leaving versus staying. what do you say to that? >> it is idiotic. they know that they're lying. all they're trying to do now is damage control, not just for pr here in the united states but worldwide. we have lost incredible amounts of respect and position in the world, on the world's stage. i don't know how anyone can respect the united states anymore because we're not only abandoning our own people or we're not only abandoning our allies, we're abandoning our own people and our own citizens and those people that helped us for 20 years, leaving them at the mercyies of a ruthless group, the taliban. we know who they are we know what they are doing, pulling people from house to house, shooting them to death, slitting their throats. not something that happened 20 years ago, it is happening now. chairman of the joint chiefs of staff general milley saying those people are our allies and partners. elizabeth: it is quite a turn of events. your reaction to the story from

reuters that the president pressured afghan president back in july to change the perception, to make it look like the taliban was losing, quote, whether true or not. the pentagon spokesperson loves said we strand americans in countries all the time. there is this whirlwind of statements flying around. take on the first one. sounds like the president was selling to the public his withdrawal to, get the leader of afghanistan to say effectively that the taliban was losing what do you say? >> of course. i think, he was focused on withdrawal. i don't think anybody disputes the fact we needed to draw down and withdrawal, maybe leaving a few troops or united nations to maintain control over the country so the taliban couldn't have it back but the fact that he is, he is basically changing the whole script to try to show that we needed to pull the troops out first while leaving people and leaving equipment, it is, quite ludicrous.

elizabeth: joining us now iowa congresswoman ashley hinson is back with us. the congresswoman sits on the house homeland security chubb h subcommittee. congresswoman, nancy pelosi blocking coming back to d.c. they are planning a full-scale attack on president biden an his team over the botched withdrawal. what can you tell us. you were on a phone call with the white house. what is going on now? >> we had a bipartisan briefing ended an hour ago, i can tell you members on both sides of the aisle are frustrated with the empty platitudes from the administration. americans want answers, iowans want answers to those question. that is what we're trying to do, spotlight failures of

administration to answer the important questions. how many americans, true americans are stuck overseas? how will we get them out of afghanistan? what about all the weapons? we need accurate account of what they are there and how they got in the hands of taliban? most importantly, we have the deadline for 9/11, the 20th anniversary, what are we doing to prevent another terrorist attack. these are questions iowans want answers to, americans deserve answers to. i'm still waiting for answers to my questions from secretary mayorkas that i asked him at a hearing in may, that i submitted for follow-up just a few weeks ago. these are questions that really pertain to the national security of our country, with what is happening at our southern border, all the issues tie together right now. elizabeth: house oversight republicans led by james comer is saying the taliban and terrorists stole half of the oil and gas and fuel inside afghanistan that was meant for the afghan people, congresswoman. that now they're using devices

including biometric devices to track down you know, u.s. allies, potentially americans going door-to-door. so if they're doing that, i mean that is really dangerous stuff. also pallets and pallets of cash that the u.s. left behind is now taken by the terrorists and also the taliban. talk to us about the u.s. military assets left behind. that situation is getting much worse. what do you say? >> absolutely. president biden called this extraordinary success. what you're talking about this, liz, we can call this a extraordinary failure. not only questions that need answered obviously by the military devices left there, not only cash that is left there, but vulnerability of the people we have left behind. it is an absolute tragedy how they have handled this situation from start to finish. there will be plenty of time obviously in the coming weeks and we're planning to put pressure on the biden administration. we tried to do that on the floor this week.

they would not recognize our member trying to introduce a bill to ask for accountability of the biden administration. we know they will play hardball. we're ready to go. the american people want answers to these questions. we'll continue to spotlight what is happening in afghanistan. no american should be left behind. which should never have been on the taliban deadline. we should have been on the america first deadline which means getting our people and partners out first no matter what. elizabeth: congressman, looks like the strategy from house republicans, to send letters to federal agencies involved, saying preserve all records, all text messages, all phone records, emails. amendments in the defense bill to basically launch potential probes and also amendments in the 3 1/2 trillion dollar budget reconciliation bill to say focus on afghanistan now. focus on americans left behind. is that what is happening? >> well this shouldn't be about politics, liz. this should be about getting
