elizabeth: u.s. marine corps and army veteran john byrnes. it's an honor to have you on the show. tell us about the moment you learned about the 9/11 attack you rushed in to help out at ground zero. can you tell us about that. >> thank you for having me on it's an honor to be on. the moment i found i was sitting ndin a classroom and hunter college on the upper eastside 4 miles north ofor ground zero d a young girl inhe the back of te classroom was staring at her cell phone and she said a plane hit the world trade center and it took a couple of moments to process and she shared news about a second plane and i realized as a national guard soldier i was going to have to get to work, do not get to russian that morning i rushed around campus got work turned io and rushed down to lexington avenue and it was a frustrating day the only useful thing i could do for the first couple of hours was go to the bookstore at

union station and grabbed maps of the city for planers but i remember there's not a lot of days you can tell you remember what you are doing a 9:10 a.m. elizabeth: you continue to work on the rescue effort. we were just talking to terry strada but 9/11 was also about september 12 when we were americans who were democrats or republicans and was showing the power of america's character people like you it's always been there when america stood approving there was more good than bad in the world. >> we were able to put a lot of things aside, it was the evening of september 11 that it coalesced. the first responders in the new york city police and the fire department of new york give so much credit and they deserve it all. the national guard turned out for the next two weeks and months to work at ground zero

and thousands of americans did everything that they couldld frm restaurants tome steakhouses and coming down with sandwiches. individuals making sandwiches for soldiers and police officers. it was one of america's best responses to something a that happened. it was incredible and i work with veterans i am the director of education, i work with veterans of all ages and they work with their 30s and 40s and were young when that happened and inspire them to join the military i work with veterans in their 20s an early 30s who were children and inspire them to serve as well. elizabeth: that is so terrific getting to your point 9/11 showed us we don't want to look to hollywood for heroes, heroes are among us galvanized by danger and the purity of their hearts to act.

the 33040 firefighters, the 71 cops, dozens killed at the pentagon, the 40 heroes ofnt flight 93 he said let's roll we see this today in the 13 troops helping people to escape who died in the tears through his bombing at kabul airport we see it nowab with the veterans workg on the pineapple express another veterans standing up to rescue american allies behind terror lines to give us hope. >> absolutely i think about my friend vince who is working in the manhattan das office we saw what happened a half a mile away out his window and he looked around he realized his army pt uniform was all that he had he put it on and ran over to the site and started directing national guard efforts he called the headquarters and reported what was going on and got the ball moving. i lost five friends that day and i did not know that until weeks later. in the intervening 20 years of lost seven more to combat operation and another four or five who took their own lives. the tragedy of september 11 is still with us in many ways and

most recently the 13 marines and soldiers. elizabeth: i wasn't going to do this my family is going to kill me my sister married a fireman two days before 9/11 she lost her brother-in-law as he was a fireman who died in 9/11. my great-grandfather knew when the fire department. my mother never knew her father because he died from mustard gas complications and my great-grandfather lost m another son who is an fdny firefighter from an ammonia. there is a personal touch to that resident needs with her family. dozens of people my hometown died in the 9/11 attacks. we feel you on that and we feel with the viewer out there who can connect to the story and is people like you who give us hope. your final word. >> america is made up of people who want to make anc differencet can make a difference and were working every day to make a difference if we could break
