who are trying to exploit the tragedy of january 6 for political gain, trying to exploit that tragedy and trying to create a false impression there is a need for election reform. if we're really taking election reform seriously we would try to reform the electoral count act which is the act that enable the vice president of the united states to count those ballots. it needs to be reformed. it is unclear in terms of its text. there is a bipartisan effort already underway here in the united states senate to try and develop those reforms but that is not what senator schumer, majority leader or the president want. instead they want to create an impression we need to legalize ballot harvesting. we need to overturn state voter i.d. laws. we need to provide the taxpayer funding of federal elections. this is nonsense, completely not a priority of the american people. elizabeth: you know, to what the senator is saying, ford, like

in the 2022 midterms. they're shamelessly trying to change election laws to stay in power. they want to force california, new york city style elections on all 50 states. to your point, liz, everything he said about the georgia law is absolutely wrong. what georgia did they made it easier to vote, harder to cheat. in fact in 2021 there was a municipal election in georgia. even a newspaper in atlanta had to admit there was nobody restricted from voting. it didn't result in any voter suppression. this is a false narrative because the democrats want to push voter suppression, talk up january 6 just so they change rules, distorting legacy of martin luther king. it is totally shameful as the senator said. >> liz -- elizabeth: go ahead, senator. >> yeah, liz, i could add, i want to associate myself with what ford said but the way that president of the united states and democrats are trying to pass this is by eliminating the 60-vote threshold, the

legislative filibuster in the u.s. senate. that would entirely change how our government works. the u.s. understand is the only significant legislative body in the world that takes democratic minority rights seriously. i want to make sure when you have the slimmest of majorities, in this case you have a vice president that can break a tie, they're not making major legislative changes. it is a forcing mechanism so we can focus together on the things that the american people really care about. right now that is border security. that is ensuring there is enough stuff on the shelves when you shop. taking care of inflation concerns people have. instead the only way they ram through this unpopular scheme is by changing the rules of the united states senate. elizabeth: well you know, to the senator's point, ford, are they shooting their feet off? they're about to lose congress. now they will have no filibuster democrats, would have no filibuster if they get their way. right?

expert, hong kong, south africa, health experts in europe that omicron cases could start to go down by the end of the month, really recede in february going into march and uk's boris johnson is saying you know what, we're officially going to say effectively covid-19 pandemic is over in march. we will have no more shut downs, living with covid strategy. why don't we have that here? >> we should have had that all along. i said multiple times, liz, we can't stop living in fear of dying. we have to look what is happening in other countries and learn from them. you know the sad thing is it becomes hysteria people are hiding in their closs etc., running from friends and family. yes, we have to take this seriously. i've been pro-vaccine as have but at some point we say, yeah, this is here. it is not going away. we need to learn to live with things. need to get on with daily lives, get back to some sense of normalcy. we can't keep having this happen

responsibility that same 2012 stock act also reiterated that no member of congress is exempt from the insider trading laws just like every american. and there is a huge higher responsibility for individual members of congress in their personal investments. there is no doubt about that. just as there are for members of the federal reserve board and families are included in that. so speaker pelosi bears the responsibility of her husband's trades and her husband's involvement. you can't separate that. elizabeth: why can't you just buy index funds? if you don't like the rules just quit? you don't have to be in congress. another poll shows more than 3/4 of americans say it is unfair that members of congress can do this because they have insider edge over the little guy here. it just doesn't feel right. you could be sitting in your kitchen in you're a congressman. you know that a law could be up for debate and you can give a dog whistle over to your stock guy, say, buy the stock or sell

are you hearing the same thing? >> i'm hearing exactly the same thing, liz. by the way, happy new year to you. it is good to be back on here. we're hearing exactly same thing as white house pressuring the democrats to oppose the nord stream 2 sanctions bill. the senate should overwhelmingly pass this bill, regain the leverage we've had. biden administration is about appeasement, giving up leverage, whether the extension of start. president showing up 16 industries the russians should not touch with cyberattacks. there should be no industry with respects to cyberattacks. we need to regain your strength. that is why the nord stream 2 bill should pass. elizabeth: senator, reports are coming in the white house wants to hold on to nord stream 2 in its own hip pocket as leverage itself in talks with russia. what do you think of that angle? >> well i think they gave away

the leverage we had in place before this administration came into office. if you think about it under the trump administration we had nord stream 2 sanctions in place. russia was not piling up on the ukrainian border. before the administration came in we held the s.t.a.r.t. talks up. biden extended for five years and got nothing in return. what the russians are doing, what vladmir putin is doing, he is looking and observing what his administration is doing, whether afghanistan, southern border what is happening on the taiwan strait, middle east, russians taking notice of this. we need to regain our strength. that is why the bill should be put forward and passed. >> we're hearing russia is increasing troops at the border as we speak. watch the pentagon spokesman on this and white house press secretary on this issue. watch this. >> sure. >> see no major changes to the force posture by the russians in

border areas around ukraine. there continues to be a sizable element there. >> 100,000 troops at border. returning troops to the barracks, returning troops to the barracks, conveying us intention of doing that would be easy ways to show de-escalation but absolutely the aggressive action, bellicose rhetoric came from the russians. they have the ability and the power to de-escalate. elizabeth: let's watch leon panetta on this. watch this. >> i think the united states and our allies can actually take some pretty strong steps against russia. i mean one is sanctions which is to cut them off from the international banking system. any using cyber to go after their infrastructure, go after their electric grid, go after their pipelines, and weaken their economy. lastly for providing defensive weapons to the ukraine which is important. they are not just going to be able to walk in to the ukraine

administration itself that requested the letter from the biden administration, requested the attorney general to issue that edict and sic the full weight of the department of justice and against parents concerned about school curriculum this, is outrageous revelation. one of a long string of outrageous revelations about this administration and i think people are right to express their outrage. elizabeth: so put put the doj, put the firepower meant for al qaeda on school board parent not at the border where parents have been crossing? >> that's it. they weaponized the department of justice and ultimately the great threat here liz, we talked about some times here that the american people are losing their faith in our institutions and one of the things that you have to have to maintain a constitutional republic that is operable is people's faith and belief that justice truly is equal and blind. we don't have that with the administration and department of

they continue to double down on these policies. of course what the policies are doing, is make the problems worse. when they take the actions, we will not prosecute with brazen theft, what will that encourage? more theft and more crime. 12 cities in 2021 set all-time murder records. this is the kind of thing that you get when you put people in charge who don't believe in the rule of law. who don't believe in accountability. who don't believe in government efficiency. elections have consequences. i think all the american people can see that for themselves. elizabeth: so if republicans take back control of congress we're hearing that they may basically put you know, block on federal grant money going to cities that are soft on crime. we have got 38 states too have weakened shoplifting crimes, busting them down to misdemeanors along with california saying that if you, you know shoppist under $1000 you will be hit with a misdemeanor, not a felony.

this is gateway to violent street crimes like muggings and robberies. that is what police have been saying. what do you do in that scenario? >> first you have to acknowledge the problem as you said. they're enabling criminals, they're harming law enforcement. you have a record number about of retirements in many of these cities. you have on top of that add insult to injury you have vaccine mandates in states like illinois, california, new york. are forcing law enforcement officers out of their employment. this is the worst possible scenario. all of their anti-police rhetoric, defund the police movement, all of that, it has real world consequences. i think people are recognizing that. you see pushback in cities that like in manhattan, the d.a. announces he will not prosecute crimes anymore well the business community, concerned citizens are rising up talking about recall effort on the new so-called progressive d.a. these progressive prosecution policies are endangering our country. there has to be a stop to it. congress may need to take some
