trafficking and drug cartels have brought to americans. just last week or so 14 smuggling attempts in el paso alone. more than 4050 smuggling's schemes, 80 east -- houses since october can you talk to us about that? >> short. since september, let me go back one. last year we filed 39 felony cases in the smuggling. so far this year we have 330 that is from september. the human trafficking it's outdone the drug trafficking because the money is so easy. a lot of people doing the smuggling do not really feel like they're doing anything wrong. elizabeth: while sheriff, those numbers are astounding figure telling us news about how much it skyrocketing in your neck of the woods. you know sheriff there's also this, mexican drug cartels, violent ones are taking over the pot and marijuana industry in northern california. this has been an ongoing story but it is getting worse.

reports of gunfights, the robbing and shooting at anyone crossing their turf. can you talk to us about this? >> you can imagine when i talk to people about the border communities we live in around here, we are pretty safe. all these people are moving into where there is money from the cities and stuff like that. if you come to our community within 15 -- 20 minutes we spot you. we are going to tell if you are bad guy or what. now they can get those big cities and blend in, we patrol the border around our area the people who live in those border towns of smaller border towns the cartels take care of them. they are not snitching them out to the cartels or bring them food, buying stuff for the kids at the school, fixing their teeth their building loyalty on the border. elizabeth: that is interesting news we did not know that the cartel is sign of how pablo escobar in columbia it was considered the robin hood parties also do the same thing

for port neighborhoods in columbia. so it's also going on in northern california to your point is the drug cartels are blending in seamlessly alongside legitimate. this northern california region is a forest, its mountains is bigger than los angeles, atlanta, houston, new orleans, chicago, denver combined trade that is the problem sheriff, how do you stop them? >> you know, it's going to take some legislation from each of the states. no our state made smuggling illegal without monetary gain. before you have to used to prove monetary gain the legislator made it illegal for that so we are catching so many more people and have been able to file on them for the california -- make sense that california has a probably need to get their legislators involved. as you norton of the federal government is not helping very much. not that men and women on the border patrol but the actual government itself with the men and women on the border patrol for like their hands are tied to not able to do the job you stop

nothing is helping real well because they are still getting in. the drugs are still getting in. but when you have legalized something in the state and these other people what they can make some money they're going to make a profit from it too. elizabeth: sheriff, to your point. what you said about the drug cartel taking care of local border towns, this side of the border in the u.s. we already knew that people were scared to talk to authorities about drug cartels for fear they would be killed. his this worsening that story? >> yes and no. you've got to remember like on these border towns a lot of these people are kin to those individuals. when you tell a young man or you show up on your tv programs and you say the dea or somebody busted 1 million or $2 million with of marijuana and then you look at these kids and they see that kind of numbers they like that. like me when i advertise we sate
